>> reporter: good morning to you. the immigration deal being negotiated on capitol hill may have been derailed this morning after those comments by the president that have sparked widespread condemnation, with the president using an expletive to describe africa and haiti. it's been eight years to the day since that massive earthquake devastated haiti. that painful anniversary overshadows as officials from the nation and around the world lash out at president trump. this morning, a bitter backlash, as president trump referred to haiti and african nations as s-hole countries. >> this remark smacks of play taunt racism. >> reporter: now, haiti's ambassador vehemently condemning the remarks. ambassador slamming mr. trump saying, either the president has been misinformed or he's miseducated.

according to a democratic aide, the president was meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers thursday at the white house, when he asked about people from haiti and africa, saying, why do we want these people from all these s-hole countries here? suggesting that the u.s. should have more people from norway. why do we need more haitians? take them out, he said, according to two sources briefed on the conversation. someone else in the room responded, because if you do, it will be obvious why. those words infuriating democrats and republicans alike. republican congresswoman maria love, the daughter of haitian immigrants, called the remarks unkind, divisive, elitist. jeb bush tweeting, i hope today's comments were a crass and flippant mistake. others were speaking out overnight. >> i condemn the comment if it's reported as true.

>> reporter: on the cover of "new york daily news" this colorful illustration. a spokesman not denying that the president made the remarks. but trying to clarify. certain washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries but president trump will fight for the american people. the comments could make democrats less likely to compromise on immigration. on thursday, a deal seemed close for a period of time. but the white house and many conservatives weren't onboard. >> we think we can get there and we're very focused on trying to make sure that happens. >> reporter: another controversial brewing this morning, president trump has canceled a trip to london planned for next month. in a tweet, the president blaming his move on former president obama, whom he accused of moving the u.s. embassy to a new location. that embassy move was a bush administration decision. many of president trump's policy decisions have been unpopular in britain and officials there had expressed concerns over the

hoda. >> kristen, thank you. we have more to get to today, including the frantic search for dozens of people still missing in the wake of the mudslides in southern california. we're getting a new look at the damage. miguel almaguer is in montecito with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. this is still a search and rescue mission. but in many neighborhoods, it looks like a recovery. massive boulders have come from the mountain with the mud. and it's covering homes up to the rooftops. 43 people are still missing. finding them in conditions like this will be a difficult task. in this massive area of devastation, search and rescue teams are still hoping for a miracle. with so many roads still blocked, the size and scope of the disaster can only be fully understood from the air. some of the worst

devastation we have seen. the homes here look like they have been gutted. boulders have gone through living rooms and bedrooms. >> reporter: the normally press teen shoreline marred with debris. highway 101 shut down until next week. there's been more than 100 air rescues, choppers plucking families and pets to safety, from places too difficult and dangerous for ground teams to reach. >> you'll see these three or four houses that are completely inaccessible from anywhere. >> turn around. the flash flood is right there. >> reporter: this is the moment when steep hillsides came crashing down. the mudslide ripping up gas lines and setting off a huge fire in the mild official a rainstorm. >> 400 feet of fire in the air. big mushroom fire cloud over our whole neighborhood. >> reporter: maria's home is in

ruins. but she and her family survived. >> you can't take it in. it doesn't make sense. there's big, huge boulders and trees going sideways. it's the most scary, unsettling feeling you'll ever have. >> reporter: those who made it out now grateful for what they have, including celebrities like oprah, pledging her support to fellow resident ellen desegener. >> i'm going to do what i can r t community. >> reporter: late thursday, the authorities identified the montecito residents that lost their lives, including four children. a community facing a difficult and enormous restoration and mourning those who will always be remembered. overnight, they expanded the mandatory evacuation zone. 10,000 people have been asked to bring their homes. they need to brick in mass equipment here to remove the

boulders and all of this mud. anyone who rode out the storm in this one was lucky to get out alive. >> miguel, thank you so much. we're also following the weather coming out east. >> the radar really tells the story. it's rare to see a delineation. you can see ahead of the system, it's 57 in cleveland. beckley, west virginia, 50 in new orleans. but look at memphis, 28 degrees. st. louis 14. chicago 13. this is the cold air making its way in here. we have 72 million people at risk for winter weather advisories or winter storm warnings. we have heavy rain to the middle east, ice jams on rivers. 30 million people ready for flooding. rain and sleet michigan down to louisiana. temperatures will be dropping by as much as 40 degrees. this evening, look for snow and ice from buffalo down to nashville. major travel delays with heavy

winds, along the eastern seaboard and the i-95 corridor. flash freezes and heavy snow for western new york. ice from memphis all the way to bangor, maine. we're looking at a tenth to a quarter-inch of rain. and snowfall, we're talking 9 to 12 inches of snow from northwestern pennsylvania all the way up into northern maine. the heaviest amounts even as much as a foot and a half as we get into parts of the northeast. guys, this is going to be about a 48-hour event, . on the roads and in the air, it will be a mess. allow yourself extra time. ahead on this busy friday morning, important information tied to your money. the irs is out with revised income tax withholding tables to reflect the changes made by the republican tax law. what does that mean for you and your paycheck?

university of pennsylvania and was home on winter break. now, a search warrant is providing information about the friend with him the night he vanished. his parents are searching for answer once his body was found inside a park near lake forest, california. >> we want to see resolution. >> reporter: he met up with a friend and drove to the park late at night, obtained by the search warrant. investigators spoke to that friend who said, bernstein walked into the park by himself. the unidentified friend told authorities he waited about abhoan hour and tried to contact bernstein. and at 1:00 a.m., drove to his girlfriend's house, and drove back to the park at 3:40 after he didn't respond. two days after the disappearance, detectives noticed the friends had several small scratches and abrasions

which he said were from a fight club. investigators noticed what appeared to be dirt under the fingernails. he said he fell into a dirt puddle while fighting. according to the neighbor's report on the aft, every door the friend had to touch, he pulled his jacket over the hand to prevent his hand and fingers from touching any part of the doors. >> we've interviewed that friend several times. he is not in custody. >> reporter: investigators said bernstein was probably killed the night he disappear bud wouldn't say how he died. during a vigil his grandfather told friends and neighbors that heavy rains helped expose the teen's body. >> god uncovered the grave he left in limb poe for years. we thank everybody here. >> reporter: according to the orange county register, the

>> reporter: look at that weird space in there. >> didn't catch that. >> reporter: another common trick from these thieves. person after person -- >> don't know. >> reporter: unable to spot it. on to red flag number three. links or attachments asking you to update your personal information. >> i'm from a very small town. let me just say that, 5,000 people, we don't get this kind of stuff. >> reporter: you don't get e-mail? >> i do. >> reporter: after a while, she gives up. can i tell you what it is? >> what? >> reporter: never click on an attachment. unless you pick up the phone and call the company yourself. >> reporter: on to red flag number four, beware of deals. generally, it should have the last four digits of your account number in the e-mail. this one doesn't. >> wow. it's looking for my credit card and all my financial information. >> reporter: everything you got, one click away. for red flag number five, you really have to pay attention.
