abrasions, scratches and dirt on his hands. he's also accused of cleaning up the car that he used the night he picked up blaze. >> 20-year-old sam woodward stabbed blaze bernstein more than 20 times, then buried him in a shallow grave at a california park. prosecutors say he then visited the crime scene days after the murder. the orange county register reported there may have been sexual overtones to the crime but the d.a. says they're still looking for the exact motive. >> what were the circumstances that led to this? and so that requires a lot of work. we need to develop all of the digital and forensic evidence to see what we can find. >> bernstein was a 19-year-old college student at the university of pennsylvania. his parents reported him missing january 2nd from their california home while he was on winter break. that's the same night

investigators say woodward picked him up and eventually drove him to a park. but the exact time and place of his murder is still unclear. woodward's mother had this to say. >> i would like it very much if everyone could respect our privacy and the privacy of the bernstein family. this is a time of great suffering, and we would ask that you would respect that suffering. thank you very much. >> reporter: in a newly released statement, bernstein's grieving parents said there is still much to be done. and if it is determined this was a hate crime, we'll cry out not only for our son but for lgbtq people everywhere that live in fear who have been victims of hate crime. woodward is set to appear in a california courtroom later today to face a judge for the first time. the charges against him could carry 26 years to life in prison. the beginning of medical marijuana in pennsylvania began today. new at 5:00, steven fish takes

about two hours, sometimes more. so to help with the influx of calls, they're taking customer service requests on twitter and facebook pages. a lot of those breaks happening of the cold weather this morning. people across pennsylvania woke up to a snow-covered front yard. here's a look at what they found in ardmore. a light dusting there. >> storm force 10 saw snow fall and melting as soon as it hit the pavement on rockland road. live look from our nbc 10 camera in allentown where a little more than three inches of snow fell overnight there. chief meteorologist tam mmy sousa joining us now. >> it's going to be icy out there. everything will refreeze because we're below freezing. that's something to be concerned about if you're out and about driving about. some places had ponding from several days ago. watch out for that. temperatures are going to be quite chilly in the teens for your overnight low. beautiful sunset out there. the sun came out.

peeks of the sunshine came out late today. 40 the high in philadelphia. that was the wee hours of the morning the temperature continued to fall after that. only 0.2 inch of snow at philadelphia international. chestnut hill, about a half inch. and the numbers went up as you went northward and westward into the suburbs and into the lehigh valley. pocono summit, one of the big winners. 8 inches of snow. hamburg at 6 inches. allentown, 3.3. springtown, 4 inches. then we head into delaware. 1.2 for newark. mt. holly, 1.3. over in new jersey, phoenixville, collegeville 2 and the airport only 0.2. so pretty much as we expected. the heavier totals were going to be further west and a little further to the north. doppler radar shows that snow is pretty much out of here unless you're down here in the tippy corner, the southeast corner of delaware. that's where there's snow left. and when i come back in a few minutes, i'll talk about the big thaw. look at that 50 in denver.

that's nothing compared to what we're going to see this weekend. i'll be back in just a little bit. >> we'll see you then, tammie. former white house chief strategist steve bannon will meet with robert mueller's investigators. that's according to a person familiar with the decision. bannon is expected to be interviewed by prosecutors instead of testifying before a grand jury. it is unclear when that interview will happen. yesterday bannon avoided a series of questions during an appearance before a house intelligence committee. bannon's attorney relayed questions in realtime to the white house during the day-long interview. he was told by the white house counsel's office not to discuss his work on the transition or in the white house. ♪ police arrested demonstrators during a protest on capitol hill today. the peaceful prowas over daca. the program which protects

immigrants brought to the u.s. illegally as is at the center of a potential government shutdown on friday. some democrats say they will not vote on a spending bill unless there's a fix for daca. >> block funding for our military with a friday deadline over unrelated issues just makes no sense to me. it's wrong. >> congress is now moving toward a short-term spending deal with hopes of aing a shutdown. the northampton county district attorney is getting involved in the daca gede bait. morganelli wrote a letter to president trump with the hopes of getting a daca act approved. morganelli says it's the right thing to do with daca recipients with no criminal history. >> it's just plain wrong to penalize hundreds of thousands of folks who did nothing wrong. >> lawmakers have to make a decision on the daca program by march when it's set to expire. city of philadelphia is trying to address the opioid epidemic by going straight to the source. today the city filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies

that make and market addictive prescription drugs. leaders accuse the companies of deceptive marketing that doesn't explain how dangerous the drugs could be. >> doctors were systematically given the false information about this. >> the is seeking millions to repay the costs soerktsed with addressing the epidemic. it's believed 1200 people died of overdoses in philadelphia alone last year. pennsylvania governor tom wolf wants to expand overtime to salaried workers. the threshold is around $23,000 but wolf wants to raise that to 48,000. it's part of his jobs but pay initiative. he made the announcement to update the overtime rules. nearly 500,000 people will finally get paid for the amount of time they're putting in at work. >> we're doing this because this

michigan courtroom for former usa gymnastics dr. nassar. thomas brennan said he sent more than 100 girls to nassar for. >> he didn't only deceive these girls which is, honest to god, that's the worst of the worst, what he did to these girls. so they have the voice. but what you did to everybody else who trusted you and sent girls your way is disgusting. >> brennan was in court to support one of his former athletes as she read her tearful testimony. brennan stared at nassar with disgust. brennan said he never knew what nassar was doing to the women. maroney will not have a pay a $100,000 fine for describing her abuse by nassar. usa gymnastics had threatened to fine her for a post on twitter last year in which maroney talked about the mollestation. that tweet violated a

nondisclosure agreement she signed after receiving a $1 million settlement in 2016. she is not attending nassar's sentencing. protesters turned out for a hearing for cop killer mumia abu-jamal. nbc 10 near the criminal justice center this morning. demonstrators calling on the new district attorney to release documents about ronald castile's involvement in abu-jamal's case. he was a senior prosecutor when abu-jamal was convicted and also a supreme court justice during his appeals process. >> recent supreme court decision a year ago said you cannot have a judge sitting in judgment over a case where he had been the prosecutor in the case. that's a violation of due process and a right to a fair and unbiased tribunal. >> the d.a.'s office is asking for more time for the new administration to review the case. there will be a hearing coming

this is nbc 10 news. >> a horrifying way to die neighbors and friends of a burl ton county woman are speaking out about her final moments and a man left her in a sinking car to die. it happened where wood street meets the delaware river. >> cydney long reports witnesses and first responders did what they could to try to save her. >> reporter: sinking, freezing and trapped under water. >> i couldn't even imagine. >> reporter: that's how 3-year-old stephanie white who went by the nickname birdie spent her final moments alive. it was sunday afternoon.

>> whennor initial responders arrived, they only could see the tires. >> witnessed grabbed their cell and took this video of first responders and the sunken car. 24-year-old jacob garrett hit a parked car with people inside and then crashed through therail plunging into the icy river. >> he left his girlfriend in the water to die. >> reporter: garrett got out safely and then without hesitation -- >> he got out, said take care of my girlfriend and ran away. >> reporter: a cold water rescue dive team jumped in risking their own safety. >> they tried to do everything with cpr. had paramedics. got her to the hospital. tried to warm her body up. they did everything they could try to do to save her life. >> reporter: white died at the hospital. >> i think they have a foster child in the house. >> reporter: neighbors say she lived with her mom. they are still stunned. >> she was quiet. he was a troublemaker. >> reporter: garrett was arrested trying to board a train and has left this community hea. >> heartbroken.

everybody was in shock around here. >> reporter: police tell me stephanie white's autopsy and garrett's toxicology results are not yet complete but jacob garrett will come face-to-face with a judge in a burlington county courtroom this friday. from burlington city, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. police say a woman tried to send drugs through the mail to her son in a delaware prison. officers arrested angel osborne and her son patrick. police intercepted the drugs before they reached the prison. both are facing a long list of charges. democratic voters in pennsylvania are challenging whether the state's congressional districts were drawn up to benefit republicans. state supreme court justices heard from both sides of the issue today. the league of women voters argues the current maps intentionally disinate against democratic voters. republican lawmakers drew lines that split up or grouped democratic voters together to ensure republican candidates would win elections.

final approval from the department of education. the plan replaces no child left behind and focuses less on how students do on standardized tests. it also sets goals for eliminating achievement gaps and a transparent presentation of school success. the essa plan will be implemented next school year. now to a possible breakthrough in the treatment of the deadliest form of kin cancer. researchers may have identified a new treatment for melanoma. the research group found a treatment and tested it with mice with cancer. it was successful. still needs to be more testing done on the treatment before it's given to people. in delaware, health officials are seeing massive spike in flu cases. in the last week alone, 142 confirmed cases. that's up 48% from the week before. state division of public health urging everyone to get the flu shot as soon as possible. and whether it's the flu or having to treat ailments, doctors are just burned out.

haywire. >> what happens? >> all of a sudden, on the screen, about three-inch black thing comes right down the side of the tv. >> reporter: about a half an hour later, horizontal lines appeared on the tv. >> you do what next? >> i get up. i'm looking for my box to see if i can find a warranty. >> he paid for a two-year extended warranty. so he thought the ten-month-old tv was covered. but the store where he purchased it refused to repair it. >> this paperwork tells me it's physical damage. >> reporter: the warranty does not cover physical damage. >> i didn't touch the tv. >> reporter: he contacted the manufacturer at samsung. that was in august 2017. samsung sent out a repairman who also said it was physical damage. but scully insisted he did not cause problem and refused to give up. so for more than a month he

called samsung over and over pleading his case. >> i talked to samsung like four times. >> reporter: he says each time a customer rep told him there was nothing samsung could do. it was his responsibility. >> this is the receipt. >> reporter: then he called nbc 10 responds. so we checked with samsung. on its website, samsung does acknowledge some customers may experience lines on their sets. its website also offers tips to try to correct the problem but it doesn't give a reason for the lines. in a statement specific to scully's tv, samsung told us, we are looking into the external factors that may have caused this issue to occur. samsung also says it stands behind its product and has high rates of customer satisfaction. samsung promised to work with scully to fix the problem. scully says weeks after we got involved, samsung repaired his tv, free of charge. >> i'm very happy. and i appreciate it, sir.
