tv NBC10 News Playoff Special NBC January 21, 2018 10:00pm-11:01pm EST
10:00 pm
good. touchdown smith! >> it's about to get turned up in here. >> yeah, that 41-yard pass was enough to turn things up. people going crazy inside the link and all across the philadelphia area. let's check in once again with nbc 10's aaron baskville. he is live with those fans inside a packed stadium. >> guess who i got with me, jim and denise, the one and only sir charles barkley. how are you feeling right now? >> i'm happy for the city of philadelphia. you know, i've been here since 1984 and they have been great a couple times, they wanted to win a championship, but this is an eagles city. i'm just happy for the people of philadelphia. >> i saw you here earlier, then you went over to the game '. what was it like inside the link tonight es special whether i they started to get rolling? >> it was pretty cool because
10:01 pm
they were going to win the whole game. and i want to thank jeff and lori for having me there tonight. but, like i say, the eagles have a major team and the second carson went down. i'm happy for the entire city and we're going to have some fun tonight. >> how good b nick foles tonight? >> well, you got give a lot of love to nick foles because once carson got hurt, there's not a single person on television, which is why job, i get paid to talk, there's not a single person who would think the eagles would go to the super bowl. so much love to nick foles. >> reporter: so obviously who do you have in the super bowl now? a rematch? >> well, listen, i live in philadelphia, i root for the eagles. listen, i know tom brady and bill belichick they're different animals. but i just got to root for the eagles. >> reporter: just describe the atmosphere tonight in the city. you've been in the stadium,
10:02 pm
you're here at xfinity live. you obviously had to walk through the parking lot to get over here. >> well, philadelphia is a very passionate city. when you're doing great they love you and the eagles are doing great. it's very difficult to play here when you're not doing good. it's very difficult to play here. i had some of those moments. but i live here for a reason, it's an amazing city and i'm happy for the eagles. >> reporter: thank you for your time. i know i stopped you. i thank you. >> yeah. i'm tired of you now, i want to finish getting drunk. reporter: go finish it. thank you, my man. appreciate it. there you go, folks. charles barclay. take a look out there. there's charles barclay, everybody. now take a look back on the floor, absolutely hype out here once again. you heard charles barclay, you got take philadelphia to the super bowl. he's taking pictures with
10:03 pm
everybody now, but it's a dance party in here right now. let's be honest, every time the music plays, people get more hyped and more hyped and more hyped. how are you feeling? how you feeling? >> man, we ecstatic, baby. >> we're number one. >> look at the back of my shirt. >> there you go. >> we're number one. we are here. we been -- >> reporter: you're excited obviously. >> excited. >> what's that? >> we've been here all year. we knew we could do it. reporter: who do you have in the super bowl, man. >> eagles all the way, baby. >> we got this. we don't care about [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: there you go. thank you, fellows. there's some passionate fans. take a look over here.
10:04 pm
it's just excitement, pure excitement here in xfinity. charles barclay stopping by to talk to us. what a treat that was. he was describing how electric it it was inside the stadium. he's back over here hanging out with fans right now. you can look at outside the link right now, the streets are filled with happy, happy fans. and right now it's a dance party. celebrate, celebrate, philadelphia, but do it responsibly. jim and denise, let's send it back to you guys in the studio. >> aaron, thank you so much. we did see charles barclay inside the stadium sitting with eagles owner jeffrey lurery and now he's made his way across the street outside to xfinity live where he's celebrating with the fans out there in xfinity live. it's just an amazing crowd, an amazing party. the whole city is celebrating tonight. >> it's electric inside xfinity
10:05 pm
live. they've got lots of music going. they don't need music on the southeast. they're just pouring out into the streets. let's go down to brandon hudson who's live in the northeast. i understand you've been talk together police commissioner? >> reporter: yeah, that's right jim and denise. we don't have to be in the crowd but we can feel the passion and excitement all the way where we are. i got commissioner ross with me. commissioner ross, what do you make of this crowd out here? >> well, it's an elated group of folks and we can understand why, it's a long time coming. can't be more excited for the eagles, the coach, and especially nick foles and all these people are as well. so you got thousands of people out here. you've seen that in a matter of minutes this crowd swell by thousands of folks. we anticipate they're probably going to be out here for a long while. >> reporter: i remember you telling me between 10,012,000 you guys were telling me that you have out here. with your training and your
10:06 pm
guys's training, how do you go into these situations? >> well, i mean, it's a lot of planning that goes into this, but we've got a lot of assets out here. some seen and some unseen. but right now you're just hopeful that folks will be friendly and jubilant but at the same time they won't cause any problems. but we're here, we're ready and we understand the excitement because we're excited too. >> you guys are excited and fans of the hometown team. how do you not get so swept away in the excitement and what's been going on and seeing the eagles going to the super bowl? >> well, i mean, we're all excited on the inside but we've got a job to do right now. that's whataway want to do because we're professionals. you got to believe that just about everybody out here in uniform is excited as all those people. >> reporter: lets head back to the stewed joeio. >> real quick, i think he tossed out a crowd estimate, was it 10,000 to 12,000, did we hear
10:07 pm
that right joo yes, that's right. last time you went to us there were about 3,000 people out here, now there are about 10,000 to 12,000 people and it's continuing to grow. a lot of of it is concentrated at that intersection of frankford and cottman. but police and the streets department trucks are surrounding the perimeter so you have people walking up. you don't have a lot of traffic but have you people walking up, and that's what it's looking like now. so police -- it's going to be a long night for them and we're going to be right there with them. >> we heard the police commissioner talking about how this crowd swells to three, four times the original amount and people pouring out into the streets and the celebration is a long time coming. >> let's go down to john clark live outside the eagles locker room. hey, guys, you've been covering this team all season. >> unbelievable. when you think about it, mike quick, you're an eagles hall of famer, you were watching it from
10:08 pm
the radio booth. how stunned were you with the way they were able to dominate supposedly the best defense in the nfl? >> it's the number one defense in the nfl, they're number in the top 5 in a lot of categories but they didn't appear that way because the eagles had a game plan and they execute today nearly to perfection. this is a beat down and no one expected this. you know, i think all of us thought that this would be a defensive game where there's not going to be a lot of scoring. the game would end up real tight with very little scoring, everything but that. >> mike, 38 unanswered points on the vikings defense. >> yeah. reporter: and you're talking about four different passing plays of 36 or more yards. >> yeah. >> reporter: last week it was a short passing game, get it out quick. did you have an idea they were going to try to open it up this week? >> i knew they would take some shots on the corners on the outside. and i thought when roads went down for a little while they took advantage of that. you have to know who's on the
10:09 pm
field. they recognize the personnel deficiencies they had on the field and they took advantage of it and they threw the ball down field on both sides with that defense and they had success doing it. >> mike quick when you think about what this eagles team has done, whose leading them to the super bowl? it's nick foles at the quarterback, and big v. came in who do great. jay ajie yeah, have you so many new players and also backups who have come in. is this one of the more incredible teams you've ever seen having the backups come in and perform this well? >> you're exactly right. but ask you who's leading them to the super bowl, it's very simple in my mind, it's doug pederson. because what he's been able to do, he has the talent so the personnel department you have to give a lot of credit because they understand the personnel that's needed for the task. so they've been able to acquire those guys. but doug pederson, the job he's done coaching these guys and making sure they're prepared. and then on game day being able to stay level head and calling the plays that he's called to
10:10 pm
exploit defenses, i give a lot of credit to him. >> this is kind of the way philadelphia does it, right? this is the way we do it here in philly because underdogs again in two games here in the playoffs and they're going to be underdogs again against the evil empire tom braidly, bill belichick and the patriots? >> i don't think they want to have itny other way. i think they like that mentality being the underdogs. all that talk was about the minnesota defense. well i think this eagles defense took kbeption to that and they played this way. i got to tell you pregame, i don't think i've seen anything like this, how loose and relaxed and how much fun the eagles were having. moment didn't get too big for them. they were all dancing on the field pregame and i don't know if i've seen that before. >> they've got this song that they play, and when they play that song, they all seem to get hyped and they all just -- i mean, they let it go. and they let it go the same way out on the field tonight. >> reporter: i tell you, this is one of the most fun groups to
10:11 pm
cover because nick foles said it. he said when you're in the locker room they all talk, they're all friends, they have a great chemistry. how much do you think the bond that this team has, they have so much fun playing together, you see how they're out there dance, throwing it down. >> yeah. >> reporter: jeffrey lor rit owner there last week throwing it down. how much fun is this? >> everybody's got to learn to do the jeffrey now. but the key is they're such a good team, it's not like there's a superstar and everyone's depending on the superstar to win games. this is a solid football team. it's the ultimate team sport and then have you really an ultimate team where everybody's contributing and everybody's doing their part, which is so important. >> mike, you can say the words, the eagles are going to the super bowl. >> listen, it sounds so sweet and i have to say it. the eagles are going to the super bowl in minneapolis, minnesota, to play in super bowl 50 ii. >> so philly has never won a
10:12 pm
sooul super bowl. if nick foles is the guy to lead them to a super bowl win in this town. >> that would be. >> that would be an unbelievable story. >> how smart is it to resign nick foles in philadelphia, you know, anticipating because quarterbacks go down in this league. >> chase daniel was the backup before. >> it's just what happens. quarterbacks go down. so when nick foles was available, they got fik foanick and it's paid off dividends for this franchise. >> carson wentz on his cane, he's off crutches, but on his cane he was right there with nick foles going up to the podium accepting the trophy, the nfc title, and it's amazing how attached carson wentz is to nick foles. they're at 6:00 in the morning for meetings, early morning going over the game plan, trying to put in plays where he can, some are rejected but he's putting in plays and right there with them all.
10:13 pm
>> nick foles comes off the field during the game and carson gets the tablet and he sits down with nick ander in going over the tablet. carson wentz say part of this thing helping nick foles in the entire process. but it's not just that. you watch jason peters and he's out there with his guys. right before the fourth quarter started he walked on to the field walking down the field with his guys. and all of these guys that have gone down, they're making sure they're a part of this making sure that the little bit that they can do, they can't play right now, but any enkrarth meant, any coaching tips, anything they do to help it along they're in. >> reporter: we're going to get some eagles players, we're going to bring them here and bring you all the coverage. they will all come right here and talk toubs. the birds are going to the bowl, you can believe it? back to you. ú: @@ú@@@@0úx$,@xxópzpñ

10:15 pm
10:16 pm
10:17 pm
welcome back. there you see it, the eagles are going to the super bowl and tens of thousands of eagles fans have poured out into the streets in northeast philadelphia. this is once again in frankford and cottman. a very controlled crowd, but growing by the minute. and they've been growing, that crowd has been growing since that game ended what? over 30 minutes ago now. >> started at a small 3,000, now swelled to about 10,000 to 12,000 people. let's take a live look where people are headed to try to get their hands on championship
10:18 pm
gear. here's the mow dells in the northeast. we've got lots of fans going into this store trying to get their hands on the nfc championship gear as the eagles are headed to the super bowl to face the patriots. hopefully to get redemption from that 2005 game. but here is some of the swag, some of the gear that we've got on hand right now. >> maybe they'll get something like this. nfc champion, it's loanioking g and we've got it here. >> let's check in in andreya thomas in south philadelphia. how's it looking now? >> reporter: still noisy, still crowded but even more crowded than when we came to you the first time. i want you to see just a few minutes ago people ran into the street, so broad street here near chunk street completely shut down right now. everybody just kind of went in the middle of this street. there are police out here too, so we're going to stay here and
10:19 pm
just talk to the crowds and we'll be back shortly. nbc 10 news. >> all bright. sky force 10 still live for us above this scene at frankford and cottman. we heard the police commissioner saying those in uniform are every bit as excited as all of those fans out there but they're deployed, they're out there in force just making sure that everyone celebrates responsibly. we also heard from brandon that the streets department is out there with vehicles making sure that this crowd stays under control, as it has, for the past 30 to 45 minutes or so. they are still jumping up and down. they are still cheering. a sea of green out there in northeast philadelphia. let's go to nbc 10's steven fisher who's live once again outside lincoln financial field. steven. >> back to the fans, steven. >> reporter: yeah, you know, guys, there's a lot of fans that have stuck with this team day in and day out, year after year. one of them is dan here. dan, you've been a season ticket holder for 20 years.
10:20 pm
this is your pay off. how's it feel. >> philly philly here we go, super bowl. >> reporter: there you go. there you go. said by dan. there we go. said by dan, if you don't know the words to the eagles fight song by now, you never will. this is how it feels going to the super bowl, guys, this is what the team wanted. this is what the team has been hungry for, starving for for as long as you can remember. we're going to stay here and hang out with some of these guys and get more stories but for now we'll send it back inside to you. we're going to keep partying on patterson. >> all right. steven fisher, you cannot blame them for being excited tonight. there's sky force 10 live over northeast philadelphia. just look at that crowd as we've been saying it's now up to maybe 12,000 people up there tonight. >> people with plenty of signs, we saw people with their dog mask out there embracing that whole underdog status that we've
10:21 pm
had for the past couple of games. this game was open cyst what everyone has thought. >> absolutely. >> it was a high-scoring game, a wide margin and just people are out there celebrating, have such a great time right now. we're going to go now to nbc's drew smith. he's on broad street in center city with the fans out there. drew. >> reporter: when i saw you last i talked to the crowd couldn't get any bigger but i'm going to show you from city hall we've the good a huge crowd and it runs all the way down. people are standing on cars over here, they've got their hands in the air. everybody's just yelling because they're loving this moment. we haven't really seen much bad behavior out here. a couple people climbed up on the poles. but everybody's been okay, just having fun here and loving the fact that the eagles are heading to the super bowl. happy people out here.
10:22 pm
back to you. >> broad street, perhaps all the way to the sports complex and the link. one continuous sea of fans out there in philadelphia tonight, it would seem. sky force 10 taking a look at the scene in northeast philadelphia. the frankford and cottman, an area where they were prepared for just this kind of celebration because this is an area where this kind of thing happens when our sports teams do well. >> yeah. this is a really popular spot for people to be in. the largest crowd we have seen has been centered here at this five points. this intersection at frankford and cottman we've seen them stretching from south philadelphia going all the way to city hall and here we have probably about 12,000 people now that have been here in northeast philadelphia. we're now going to go to nbc sports fizzle john clark who's live outside the locker room. >> reporter: wait, chris long wants to keep watching that. the city is going wild right now put won a super bowl last year
10:23 pm
with the new england patriots and you come here to the eagles and you're going back to the super bowl, a chance to win two in a row. how unbelievable is that? >> i mean, extremely lucky. play with a bunch of great guys. knew when i came here and other free agents we talk about it as well when we came here we'd have a chance to compete for something like this. you have to play it out and win and we earned it. >> when you look at that city tonight, people are out in the streets, people are celebrating everywhere, you get a sense of what this means to this town? never won a super bowl here. >> it's amazing. i mean, we got more work to do at the end of the day, two more weeks of hard work to put in. we got to play one of the best franchises of all time, one of the best quarterbacks of all time if not the best, one of the best coaches of all time if not the best. we got our work cut out for us but with this city behind us it's a beautiful thing. this san awesome place. >> reporter: there's so much talk about the minnesota vikings and their defense. did you guys take exception to that? i watched the way that defense was flying around tonight. >> i mean, we want to pitch a shutout. that first drive that really
10:24 pm
piss dolla pissed aus and at the end of the day we felt we misrepresented ourselves but from there we ratcheted it up a little bit and that's what we know we're capable of. we've been playing like that for a while we just have to keep doing it. >> before the game i was watching you pregame and everybody on the field for the most part was dancing. >> yeah. >> it just seemed like you guys were so relaxed and loose and having so much fun. did you know you were going to win this thing? >> you know what? every game we come out expecting to win, and that's kind of the mindset that doug's done a great job of keeping us even keel positive, energetic, the noise outside team and locker room, we can use that for motivation. but at the end of the day we have to play it out and they had to come in and beat us. a lot of people were like the eagles have to play the vikings were relook the vikings had to play the eagles at the link. >> carson wentz goes down and after that everything just shifts and everyone's expecting
10:25 pm
this team to fall after that. how much different is it now the position that you're in given all that you've gone through this season? >> a lot of people doubt us. a lot of people tell us how we're supposed to feel, how we're supposed to play whether a season's supposed to end. we got a head coach and we got a group of guys that we don't panic and that's -- if you play ball in the league before, you know, panic can be everywhere. >> right. >> and at the end of the day, you know, when that happened we just rallied around each other. it's cliché but we played it out and we proved that we never doubt today. >> pretty cool that your zad here for the broadcast with fox and before the game i asked him a couple questions and he said he was so nervous. he said it's almost like a fight he wants to get that first punch in the mouth to get going. your nervous as your dad or no? >> i don't really get nervous. at this point maybe it's my old age i need about three cups of coffee on game day to get going. i've learned over my years only expend your energy once the whistle blows.
10:26 pm
>> so the dog masks were out the last game and we saw lane johnson with the dog masks this game. super bowl are you putting them away or is that still the rallying crying for this team that you and lane kind of created? >> at the end of the day i feel like a lot of people have said a lot of things about us outside the locker room and at the end of the day we're plenty motivated without that. but we have fun with it. i think it embodies this city. got a lot of people that have been waiting to be on a stage like this and we have a lot of work to did at the end of the day. we're so appreciative of the opportunity to play it out. >> reporter: enjoy this win and have fun, i know you're having down time but you're getting ready for a team you know very well. >> a hell of a team and we have our work cut out for us. >> are you seriously pinching yourself that you're going to be playing the team you were on last year to win the super bowl again? >> all you can ask for is an opportunity and both teams are going to have a great opportunity playing on the world's biggest stage there the. there's 100 people still playing
10:27 pm
football in the world and we get do it so let's take advantage of this opportunity. >> reporter: chris long had some unbelievable plays for this team put remember in l.a., unbelievable play out there, big plays tonight and everybody's contributing. thanks a lot for your time. >> thank you. >> reporter: going to the super bowl. >> we got more work to do gentleman with? >> reporter: stay safe everybody out there. they greased the poles. >> more work do. >> reporter: back to you. >> you will right, john clark mike quick with chris long. chris long saying the city is behind us, it's a beautiful thing. you're watching nbc 10 news playoff special.
10:30 pm
10:31 pm
guys. >> [ inaudible question ] set will down get that [ inaudible ]. >> we didn't get a pick six like that get yourself back into the game. yeah, guys began to kind of feed off of that, feed off the crowd. what a tremendous crowd today. fans were excited, electric. i don't think they sat down the whole game. so plays like that, the fans really got us back into the game. >> do you have one defense the top defense, how were you able to do what you did offensively. >>? >> it's just execution. you know, trusting the players, putting them in great situations. we sort of -- we talked all week about staying ahead on first and second down, we gave ourselves a chance or third down. we stayed in those manageable situations. nick did a great job of eyes down the field. protection was good. guys made plays. i mean, bottom line, guys made plays. that's the only way you can get the job done is to be able to throw and catch and do the things in a run game that we did. and hats off to the offensive
10:32 pm
staff. obviously frank and the game planning and the guys for executing. >> to my recollection, i can't recall any other gadget plays throughout the course of the season. your kind of saving that for a big playoff moment? >> no. i wasn't saving it. you know, listen, it's -- those plays, you know, you just don't, like, grasping at straws out of thin air, you don't pull them out and say i'm going to run it this way. there's got to be a reason for running a gadget play. as i studied some of the formations that we did, i felt like we'd get an opportunity to at least attempt the play. great execution, protection was there, nick did a great job of stepping up and sliding right and then what a finish, what a catch by tori in the front corner of the end zone and it's
10:33 pm
great what they work. >> when you consider the journey you took, but you lose player after player, new quarterback to get to this point. as a conference champion how special is this because of the journey you took? >> i think that's what makes it more special with thooes theese. when we started back in otas, you knew you might have a good team, good compete for the nfc east. as the season goes you start losing your top players to energy and you just kind of see the fight in the guys and the resiliency in the guys and you lose another play a couple weeks later and then you lose your quarterback here at the end. and the guys just keep -- keep battling, you know. and for us to believe in one another and to be now in this spot, just so happy for those guys and hats off to them. >> you said all the right things, i wanted to ask you
10:34 pm
after carson's injury, what made you think the team would get to this point? >> just believing in the guys, have faith in the guys. i mean, our season wasn't over, you know. we still are in the driver's seat, you know. we had to i think win one or two games at the end of the year to at least have home field or at least have a home buy, you know, that first round. and i just felt confident in the players and the coaches that we were still a good football team, you know. and i talked to the team all the time. it's not about one guy. one guy can make a difference for you, but it takes a whole team to make it happen. that's what our guys have done. >> you had a real big contributions from two backup defensive ends and nick. it seemed to change the game. do you think your defense's ability has been underappreciated outside of your building this year? >> i think so.
10:35 pm
you know, it's a great -- to me, it's a great defense, one of the befs defenses if not the best one of the top ones in the league and they proved it again to tonight. sometimes they don't get enough credit. but you know what? those guys in the dressing room then know. they understand. we know as coaches and, you know, hats off to jim schwartz for the schemes and the plays and the defenses and everything that he puts together. and, yeah, it's a great group. probably not getting enough credit. >> regarding nick, given your career as a quarterback, do you have a special appreciation for what it takes to do what he's done coming off the bench, kind of block out the noise and whatever labels get stuck to a quarterback and kind of get to that moment? >> my hat's off to nick. trusting in his ability, trusting in me as the head coach
10:36 pm
and putting him in, you know, ideal situations and the play, you know, situations to be successful on the field and then for the guys, the guys to believe in him. listen, he's not rookie. he's a veteran player who's played a lot of games in this league. he started a lot of games. he had a pro bowl year a couple years ago. this is not rookie we're talking about. and, you know, just so happy for him, you know, and what he's been through and everything now to finally put not only himself, but help this football team get to where we want to go and hopefully finish the year right. >> doug, when you got the ball at the end of the first half, i'm sure there's a lot of people that said they're just going to [ inaudible ] not your style, right? >> we had time and time-outs. and, you know, i just -- i told myself before the game i was going to maintain the aggressiveness in this ball
10:37 pm
game. listen, it was -- you know, you win, you keep playing. if you lose you're going home. i didn't want to -- i didn't want to go home and, you know, regret any decisions. so we put a drive together, frank did a great job of orchestrating the drive at that point and he and i collaborating on that drive and great way to finish with three points and then come out with the ball in the second half. >> do you feel your team feed off of that? do you feel them take your persona in that manner? >> i think they do. i hope they do because i got a lot of trust in them and i think they got trust in me that i'm going to make the right decision, you know. and ultimately it comes down to the players on the field. but i do believe that they feel that and as long as i'm doing it, you know, and i'm doing it -- the decision is right by them and i'm not putting them in a bad situation then i think they feed on it and start believing that. >> in the locker room after the
10:38 pm
celebration what was the message? >> we're going to the super bowl. we are going to the stinking super bowl and that's all we need to know. and i was just so proud of them for the season so far. we still have some unfinished business, obviously, but we're going to pack our bags and head to minneapolis. >> all right. thanks, guys. >> that was eagles head coach doug pederson talking about his nfc champions. he says they do have their work cut out for them but the team really fed off the crowd in much of the situation here. >> he said we are going to the stinking super bowl, that's what he told his players. he talked about the faith had he to have in nick foles and he trusted him coming in as the backup quarterback after carson wentz's injury and having his faith in the whole team, in the guys, and really coming through for him as a team and making that are way to the super bowl if the is an incredible story. do wasn't to check in with mitch
10:39 pm
blocker who is live in sky force teb this time over brooud broad street. mitch. >> yeah, we're in north broad street and you think the players are fired up, here are the fans marching all the way south of city hall by way of north broad street. this is pretty much empromp you too by the philadelphia police department as they're closing the streets as this crowd makes its way toward city hall. you can see those police cars kind of swooping in and clearing the roads. but there are people on top of the cars waving those eagles flags as the philadelphia police department keeping the peace. >> all right. let's go to nbc sports philadelphia john clark who's with brent celek trying to get reaction from the players. >> there's no better guy than brent celek, 11 years here with the eagles. and this is, you know, okay, one of your last shots do this. how special is this team that, you know, have you nick kohl's
10:40 pm
foals come in, a new left tackle and you guys are going to the super bowl? >> the way this team has faced adversity the whole season i'm not surprised. the way foals has stepped up, the way everyone's really stepped up has been phenomenal and honestly, we're not done yet. we got one more game, man. we got to finish this. >> reporter: so when carson wentz went down mvp of the league, we asked thank you question so many times there are swore many people around the country, everywhere, underdogs for these two games in the playoffs. how do you think nick did with all of that and then tonight he has an mvp performance in the nfc championship game? >> i mean, nick has always been just even his whole career and, you know, he's not phased whether this is nfc championship, last game of the season, it doesn't phase him. he's done a heck of a job. and i honestly i expect what'd did tonight. he did a great job. >> reporter: everybody said the minnesota vikings had the best
10:41 pm
defense and by the way you had four passesch 36 or more yards. the vikings haven't ever given up that in a playoff team. did you have a sense that you could open up a passing game a little more than did you last week? >> well, i had that sense early in the week when they came out with the game plans. i think doug did a great job of scheming these guys up and i think all the guys were excited about the game plan once it was -- once it was fully, you know, all the way in and guys just executed it flawlessly, man. >> reporter: we all watch you guys have so much fun out there. you see everybody dancing. i believe jeffrey was in there again, did he dance again? >> he was dapsing a little bit. >> reporter: so we heard. tell me about the chemistry of this team because you've been on many, many teams with the eagles, been on the super bowl before. tell me about the chemistry of this group. >> i think you have a bunch of guys that love each other and a bun' of unselfish guys and that excuse exudes, mans man. we've done a lot but we're not
10:42 pm
done yet. >> reporter: the city's out there celebrate rg this is your shot. how good do you feel about this group going into the super bowl? >> i feel great. look what the we've done all year. people keep doubt be us, that's fine. we're going to continue to play great. we're going to finish this thing, philly. i hope to see all of you in minnesota, let's go j oh, they're coming. brent, congratulations. thank you very much. brent celek, longest tenured athlete in this town. doug pederson. >> not me, brent. >> no, no, not you. >> not me. >> but he's going to the super bowl now. when you think of this moment, do you think of guys like that who have been grinding all these years? >> i do. i do. and it's the reason this team has performed the way it has this season, because of guys like brent. and the older veteran on this football team. you know, hats off to him for the resiliency. he's battled through a lot over his career, through injury,
10:43 pm
through a lot of ups and downs and now for him finally to, you know, have a chance to be in this game, this final game of the year, i'm so happy for him. >> doug there are was arguably the best defense in the nfl, the vikings defense. did you expect to be able to move the ball and come up with the big plays like you did in this game, putting 38 on them? 38 unanswered points? >> you know, we knew it was going to be a challenge. minnesota is tremendous defense. you put the tape on and they're all over the field. it's a smothering type defense. my hats off to them. and but yet you get into the game and, you know, people talk about rpos and talk about all the little dink and dunk throws. but those are positive yards. those are things that keep your offense on the field. and when you have quarterbacks that are smart, they can think and they can process information, receivers are running detailed routes, those things help you and it happened -- it happened tonight again. and then we were able to kind of open up the playbook a little
10:44 pm
bit and get into a rhythm and hats off to the offensive staff, obviously, for what they did with their players and then ultimately the offense. >> and nick foles, more passing yards in a game this year than carson wentz and everybody talked about carson going down and losing your mvp. had you sensed over the last couple weeks with more practice time, back in pads, more intense sitly that he was growing confidencewise and also just being comfortable with his receivers? >> yeah, it just every week got a little bit better with him and then they had the bye-week early with the playoffs we had a bye and we practiced in pads that week and got him back behind center and feeling the rush and, you know, a little more timing and rhythm and speed on the field. and it just -- you just saw it. you saw it last weekend in the game against atlanta, then he comes out this week and has a tremendous practice again, good week, and he puts up the numbers had he today. now, granted offensive line played extremely well tonight, we were sable to run the ball efficiently and receivers made some great, great catches down the field for him.
10:45 pm
so my hats off to the entire offense, did a great job. >> reporter: watching this team pregame when they were out there before the game and they're just going crazy on the field, dancing, having fun, and they all said you let their personalities out. how important was that? then did you sense how loose they were going into this game that you know what? wow there are moment isn't too big for them? >> you know, i do believe that you just got to let the guys be the guys and let them -- when i say let their personalities show, i want them to have fun. i want them to be in the moment, you know, to be where their feet are and to, you know, enjoy the experience. but at the same time we got business to do and when the whistle blows, they're into the moment. and you can feel it in pregame tonight the way the guys were excited and some of the injured guys and some of the guys that i was standing around were like look out, look out, our guys are ready to go. so hats off to that whole entire team in there. >> reporter: i saw you after the
10:46 pm
game go around to several parts of the link in the crowd and you clapped for the eagles fans. how much of a home field advantage is this really? i know everybody says oh, we have the best home record in the nfl on the last two years. how loud was that out here tonight? >> it's unbelievable to have home field, for us to have home field, to feel our fans on the field, to feel the noise, to feel the energy in the stadium is so -- it's unbelievable. it's hard to describe unless you're on the field and you're feeling that and our players feed off of that. and to see our stadium full even during pregame was exciting for the guys. and this is why we play and this is why we try to win as many games as you can during the regular season, so you can -- you can have that first round bye, you can have home field throughout. and play at home and sleep in our own beds and it's a tribute to our fans. >> reporter: is it pretty crazy you're going to see bill belichick versus doug pederson, tom brady versus nick foles,
10:47 pm
patriots versus eagles? >> it's crazy. i mean, it's crazy. and, you know, there's a lot of experience there on the other side. i mean, they've been there done that and my hats off to them for that organization and what they've accomplished in the national football league. and, you know, it's what every other team aspires do and to be. and, you know, we got an opportunity, obviously, in a couple of weeks so we're going to get back to work this week and prepare and go up to minneapolis and see what happens. >> reporter: and the owner jeffrey lurie has to dance again. he's 2-0, right? >> he's 2-0 and has to put on his dancing shoes one more time. >> reporter: congratulations, doug. >> thanks. >> you want to tell them to be safe tonight because they're out there having a good time. >> reporter: yes, please be safe. get home safely but, hey, congratulations. thanks again for the great season at home here at the link and we got a lot of unfinished business to do. >> reporter: doug's got to drive
10:48 pm
home too. alan, come on in. >> love to see that. love to see that. and we're live right now? >> see, i love it. he's just going to take control. >> are we live. >> reporter: yeah, we're life. you take control, man. >> i just want to make sure. >> reporter: you are speaking city of philadelphia and we were seeing them out there in the streets. you can believe this moment and what you're a part of and what you've done for this city of philadelphia going to the super bowl? >> i mean, it's been an amazing journey so far. oh, yeah, that's amazing. no, i mean, it's been amazing journey so far but we're not done yet. we still have another game to play. >> reporter: i was talking to some defensive guys and they came out here and said when they went down the field on you that first drive you were angry about that. >> yeah. >> reporter: chris long said you wanted to shut them out. >> we knew we had to buckle up after that. you mentioned chris long he hit a great pass rush on that, got
10:49 pm
the quarterback's arm, the ball was picked off, i think from there the game really was in our hands. >> reporter: how much fun did you have in this football game? because it -- >> it was the most fun i ever had. are you having fun? i'm having fun. >> reporter: this say maizing. >> yeah. >> it's going to continue all through the night, right? >> i hope so. >> reporter: we'll make sure that happens. but after a while it seemed like a party. i don't want to say it looked easy, this team, the vikings, it's amazing what you were able to do, 38-7 over this team. >> absolutely. they didn't score after that first drive and i think that's something we should be proud of defensively. by want to talk about how ow awesome our offense was. they were clicking on all frontss. nick was the offensive line. you can't say i want to shout everybody out but you can't say enough if the it was just an amazing game, fun experience. and obviously the fans at the link, it was amazing. i was getting goose bumps all game and it was just a heck of a moment. >> reporter: what was that like when you're look up and the confetti is over you and you're hearing the fans do eagle chants
10:50 pm
singing the fight song? >> it's surreal. you were there too so you got to experience it as well. but, no, it was just an awesome game, awesome atmosphere, and, you know, the link, the fans, the crowd, our team is amazing. >> reporter: so these two games in the playoffs you guys were underdogs. >> right. i hadn't heard that much from the media or anything, that's weird. >> reporter: first time the media's ever going off. but you're going to be underdogs again. are you happy about that? do you like to now? all good? >> whatever. i think we're a good football team, so -- >> reporter: i think you showed that. >> i guess we'll see. >> reporter: was there anything in the team meeting last night when you all get together, any special message? any clips being shown of anybody doubting you? what went on? >>away don't need to use motivation like that. we're all internally motivate and we just care so much about each other, the players, the staff, everybody, i think we're a really tight knit unit and that's kind of what's showing up on the field too.
10:51 pm
we don't need any external motivation, is what i'm saying. we're very motivate and we want to do it for each other. >> reporter: you want to tell everybody where you're from? >> i'm from minnesota. >> reporter: and you grew a fan of who? >> ways a packers fan. >> reporter: i can't figure that out. >> i got some wisconsin family ties and i went to, you know, university of wisconsin, but, yeah, no, my folks still live about 30 minutes west of minneapolis. >> reporter: okay. so, i mean -- >> i've been hearing a lot about the vikings this year, pretty crazy. >> reporter: so you're going home. >> yeah. >> reporter: that's unbelievable. >> i'm really excited. it's been a wild journey. you obviously hear about the super bowl being in minneapolis and you always have your sites set on the super bowl as a player. and for me i had a long off-season. >> reporter: we saw you working out all the time in training camp. >> that's right. >> reporter: shirtless, that's right. >> i was working out very hard. but when you're in off-season
10:52 pm
and you have your sites set on the super bowl and then for that to come to fruition over such a long amazing journey with these guys and everything we've been through, it's really good feeling. >> reporter: all right. so super bowl tickets are thousands of dollars. your family are a half an hour away, are they able to drive to the super bowl? >> my phone season blowing up. that's going to be something i'm going to have to figure out. >> reporter: this is unbelievable. when did you start to believe had you could play a super bowl in your hometown? when did it start to wow this team is good enough to get there? >> you never have any doubts about that kind of thing put don't set your -- you set your goals and set your sites high back in the off-season. >> reporter: amazing. what was that locker room like. >> it was lit. it was amazing. the energy, it was awesome. it was really awesome. >> reporter: congratulations to you going home. bow allen is going home a super bowl in his backyard. >> i'm excited. thank you very much. >> reporter: thanks for joining
10:53 pm
us. and do you want us to keep going here? it's national hugging day, by the way. malcolm jenkins, this is unbelievable. i mean. >> it's very believable. >> reporter: listen, i mean, but when you think about the guys you've lost on this team, nick foles has stepped in, big d, you're down third middle linebacker. well you're actually playing linebacker so you got that handled. how did this team stay together and never let doubt creep in and everybody just stepped in, backups came in and filled those roles? >> think it's one of those special years. we've done a great job of adding guys to this core group that have been there before, that know what it takes, that have poise, have grit, and i think as we've gone on, the leadership in this team is really just rised to the top and it's taken over to where anything can happen to us and we will not be denied. we've got so many guys that have
10:54 pm
fought through adversity to even get to this place and be on this team to get into the league that the determination that we have is one that i haven't been around. and it's special. and being a city like philadelphia where, you know, people enjoy the fight, the grit, the enthusiasm, it just fits our personality. >> and you just saw that picture, you saw city hall there and the fans. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: and the fans in the streets. have you been able to see some of the videos of what's going on out there? everybody is in the streets tonight partying. >> i'll be through the in just a little bit. >> reporter: you're going out there. >> of course i will. >> reporter: you want to let everybody know where wur going. >> no. >> reporter: so they go down the field on you, first drive 75 yards. what are you saying as a defense to one another? >> well, the biggest thing we came back and said let's set will down. we did some things that are uncharacteristic. we missed a few tackles, myself included. the touchdown play we were misaligned and scrambling and it was like let's calm down, get
10:55 pm
back to what we're doing, got to stop. robinson gets a big interception for to tight score and we're like let's go. and the crowd's into it. nobody blinked, nobody panics, it's happened to us before and it's just fun. >> reporter: i've been talking to some of the guys about what we were able to see pregame. everybody was out there on the field dancing pregame. mick millwright in the meeting rim. >> yeah, that was earlier today. it was one of those things that, you know, coach fip in the meeting said they're going to play this on the field. and the first one they did was in the pregame and every time they did it gave us that juice. we feld off our crowd. i never heard the tlank loud since i've been here and it was a special time. we talk about it all the time that every year your team changes. so this team will never be the same and this is actually our last opportunity ton compete together as a unit in the link
10:56 pm
and we wanted to make sure that this one was special and it was definitely one for the history books. >> you spoke to the team because have you won a super bowl and doug had you speak tufl your teammates and tell them what to expect and don't let the game get too big. these young guys, some of the first, second year in the league, i was amazed they didn't seem in awe of the situation. >> i don't think they understand the situation, to be honest. >> reporter: like you, right? >> yeah. my rookie year i didn't know going moo it. for me, i'm just hanging on for deer life. you know, i'm so sunken and just trying to perform that i really didn't know. for me, i was nervous coming to the game. but i'm look at some of the young guys and you can tell they don't understand the magnitude of where we are. but at the end of the day we're a confident group. we care about each other, we work hard and we're looking to compete for a championship. >> reporter: nick foles is at the podium right now so let's listen to him. >> being in this moment to share with our family, our fans, all
10:57 pm
the people that love the philadelphia eagles, this franchise, my teammates, it is honestly unbelievable and words just can't describe. >> reporter: nick, you said last week that they were going to [ inaudible ]. >> we wanted to be aggressive. minnesota is one of the best teams in football. obviously their defense is one of the top defenses in the league so we had to go right at them and be aggressive. we were able to execute well. that's a great team. but i was really proud of our guys for execution today and we're able to get a great victory and now we're heading to the super bowl. it's pretty unreal. >> reporter: when did you know you were in rhythm and had you it going on today? >> i mean, probably before the game and being the nfc championship game, my first time to ever play in it, just the journey that's happened the last several years, it's an emotional thing so you want to set until. but very soon just looking at the guys on the sidelines
10:58 pm
pregame, being in the locker room, everyone was just locked in because i'm going to say it again. we lean on each other, we play for each other and that's what's special about this team is we -- there's never going to be a time where we turn on each other or anything. we're always going to support each other and that's the beautiful thing about the philadelphia eagles and going into the game getting first downs. we missed a couple big plays early but we just kept firing. coach pearson called an amazing game and we were able to execute [ inaudible question ] >> i think the big thing tonight is we were able to do a bunch of different stuff. if you watch the game there's, you know, it was try to keep them out of rhythm because that defense does a good job if they can catch your rhythm, you know, they're almost unstoppable. but we were able to keep them off balance. any time up go against any sort of defense you want to keep them off balance. we did a great job of that. the coaches did an amazing job of giving us the scheme this week and the guys did a great job executing tonight.
10:59 pm
>> what was kind of going on there? seemed like the scramble play? >> yeah, it was sort of a broken play where they thought they probably had a sack and i was able to get out and alshone made an amazing play. he he saw the coverage and he sort of approached it like a scramble drill and i was able to get away and get the ball out there to him. he made it -- a great catch and the o line did a great job blacking all night. >> how much did that first play stick [ inaudible ]? >> i don't think it pumped up the off finance, i think it pumped up will whole stiff philadelphia. i think everybody down broad street heard that. i can only imagine what's going on on broad street right now, i think everyone's having a good time as they should. any time you get a pick six that's a mow tent meant tomb change. he made a play and unbelievable. biggest play of the game right there, momentum shift. >> missed opportunities on that
11:00 pm
first drive, guys [ inaudible ] is that -- >> starts now. ? >> welcome back you're listening to quarterback nick foles live talking about this championship. >> our guys can't go out there and play with fear. we wanted to play aggressive. we believe in each other. we knew we could make big plays but it didn't change coach pierce sop's game plan calling and our mentality never change pd the with we were going to go out there and play and we executeda at i high level. >> did you think that was -- [ inaudible ] questioned as what [ inaudible ] how do you explain the difference of how you played [ inaudible ]. >> in sports, everything's a process. everything do you in life when you work at it it's a process and you just -- you can't give up. everyone wants to win when it's a bad outing wants to be critical, i get it, that's part of the media, totally
