noon. right now, it's in the hands of senate democrats. here's the simple question -- do they trust the top republican, mitch mcconnell, do deliver on an immigration bill before next month? and the president has been m.i.a. no deal to end the government shutdown, now stretching into its third day. >> let's step back from the brink, let's stop victimizing the american people and get back to work on their behalf. >> reporter: overnight, the senate's top republican, mitch mcconnell, urging democrats to support a three-week budget extension, while signaling an openness to a vote next month. that vote would address the key fla flashpoint, the fate of undocumented immigrants, called d.r.e.a.m.ers. chuck schumer not ready to cut that deal but not walking away. >> we have yet to agree on a

path forward that would be acceptable to both sides. >> reporter: jeff flake saying he supports the new gop offer. >> there's been a lot of rhetoric over the last couple of days about whose shutdown this is, who should have the blame. there's enough blame going around. >> reporter: mike pence, delivering a partisan message for troops near the syrian border, troops that won't get paid during the shutdown. >> you deserve better. >> reporter: the white house insisting it won't negotiate on immigration until the democrats reopen the government, changing the message on its public comment line to take a political swipe. >> unfortunately, we cannot answer your call today because congressional democrats are holding government funding, including funding for our troops and other national security priorities, hostage to an unrelated immigration debate. >> reporter: the president, the

self-proclaimed dealmaker, largely absent. speaking exclusively with congressional republicans and members of his cabinet. chuck schumer, who met with him friday, described him as unreliable. >> negotiating with this white house is like negotiating with jell-o. >> reporter: the president's re-election campaign, releasing this video. >> democrats who stand in our way, will be complicit in every murder committed by illegal immigrants. >> reporter: senator tammy duckworth, an iraq war veteran, who lost both legs in combat, not having it. >> i will not be lectured what our military needs by a draft dodger. >> reporter: the president with no public events scheduled. who is affected by the shutdown? essential government services are up and running. you'll get your mail, social security checks, v.a. hospitals are open with national parks. they will be operating with

reduced services. but what they call the nonessential services. they're suspended. no military death benefits. passport renewals are going to be delayed. and 800,000 federal workers told to stay home without pay until the funding is restored. that can put a stress on families. for more on where things stand right now, let's bring in kasie hunt who is on capitol hill and has not slept all weekend. good morning. this is a real stunner. we're in some suspense here about what could happen at noon. >> it is going to be a dramatic morning here on capitol hill, savannah. we don't know whether or not the government will open at noon. what are democrats going to do? they're going to huddle behind closed doors this morning. and the main question is going to be, do enough of them start to feel as though americans are blaming them for this dramatic shutdown? republicans are hoping that there are as many as ten of them who feel that way, and who will

be willing to vote with them to reopen government this afternoon. but the trust levels are just so incredibly low that it's going to be a really dramatic debate behind the closed doors. >> let's say they do reopen the government today. what will happen to the d.r.e.a.m.ers? >> reporter: that is the foundation of all of this, hoda. there are no guarantees. democrats have to decide, do they trust mitch mcconnell to move forward and put an immigration bill on the floor? even if they do, there's a question of what the president is going to do. and any immigration bill to help the d.r.e.a.m.ers has to pass the house of representatives. there's so many conservatives, that the sense is, they need to know that the president would need to be onboard. there's so many twists and turns. that march 5 th deadline is whe some of them face deportation.

>> thank you very much. now, to powerful scenes in cities across the country this weekend. millions taking to the streets for the second annual women's march, demanding equal treatment and social and political change. kristen welker has that story. >> reporter: good morning to you. the streets here in d.c. were packed over the weekend. the marches, marking the anniversary of president trump's inauguration and the first women's marches, that brought out millions of protesters into the streets, many wearing those now-famous pink hats. this year the #metoo movement to the looming midterm elections, there was new momentum. >> this is what democracy looks like. >> reporter: a chorus of women raising their voices for what they say is a revolution. >> this is what america looks like. >> reporter: protesters flooding the streets nationwide, marking a year since the first women's march. this year, again, many

expressing opposition to mr. trump's policies, while demanding equal treatment and pay for women. the president taking to twitter on saturday, seeming to troll the protesters, writing that it was a perfect day to celebrate the historic milestones and unprecedented economic success and wealth creation that has taken place over the last 12 months. lowest female unemployment in 18 years. the tweet coming as women in hundreds of cities from new york to los angeles -- >> hey, hey, ho, ho, donald trump has got to go. >> reporter: -- to the nation's capital. >> we need a leader. >> not a betweener. >> reporter: all across the world, london, paris and rome were energized by the #metoo movement. >> people haare starting to realize and know that it is all the time and it affects everybody. >> reporter: celebrities lending their voices and star power. >> we're out here because women

have decided they want to take back the conversation. >> you told the world that time's up on violence. you told the world that time's up on silence. >> reporter: and putting the focus on getting women to the polls and into office. since the first women's march, hundreds of women have become first-time candidates, like katie hill, running for congress in l.a. county's 25th district. >> i think donald trump getting elected was a huge part of what inspired me to run for office. it was a culmination that made me realize this is time for us to step up. >> reporter: march organizers say they're planning to hold rallies in key battleground states throughout the year with the goal of energizing female voters. hoda and savannah? >> thank you. a lot more to get to, including a rare and exclusive look inside north korea. there's much anxiety over the regi regime's nuclear program. but tension in the region has softened in recent days with the

news that north and south korea plan to compete together in the winter olympics. lester holt is just a few hours outside of the capital of pyongyang. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is the bunny slope at a modern ski resort here in north korea. we're here because some of the athletes from the south and north, based on the new alliance, will be doing some of their training here. it's been announced the north koreans will field 22 athletes in the upcoming winter games in south korea. that's fueling some sense of hope and optimism in cooperation in other ways between the two countries. we arrived on saturday. we flew the north korean state airline. it's an hour and a half flight from beijing. they make an announcement when you've crossed the border into north korea. we passed through immigrations, went through a lengthy and detailed customs inspection of not only our equipment but our personal idtems, down to the

novels we were reading and a toothbrush of our crew members. we have been treated with respect here. we've been invited and we're guests of the ministry of morn affairs. we stayed at a guest house last night and made our way to this ski se reporesort to see a part north korea that americans don't see. we will be speaking to a member of the north korean olympics delegation about the recent talks. he was a member of those talks and we'll have that on n"nbc nightly news". until then, we send it back to new york. >> we're going to have more reporting from lester throughout the day and watch him from the region tomorrow on "nbc nightly news." now, to the deadly attack in afghanistan. 23 people were killed, several others hurt, after a gunman stormed a hotel in kabul. the attack set off a 13-hour gun battle. guests tried to escape and climb

down the side of the buildings. the attackers seemed to be targeting foreigners and people working with the government. the u.s. state department is working with authorities to determine if any of the victims are american. also this morning, there are new developments in the scandal surrounding missouri's governor. he's at the center of controversy involving an admitted affair and alleged blackmail. now, she's speakhe's speaking o first interview since the news broke. blake mccoy is there for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the governor is defiant, admitting to that affair but insisting he did not try to blackmail the woman. now, the tawdry details of the affair are threatening to take him down. this morning, missouri's governor is under fire and fighting back. denying allegations he tried to blackmail a woman he had an affair with using a naked photograph of her.

>> there was no violence. this was consensual. >> reporter: since news of the affair broke, he gave an interview. just hours of his state of the state speech -- >> thank you, guys. >> reporter: tv station kmov aired the bombshell report with the ex-husband of the other woman, greitens' hairdresser. he had recordings of their counseling sessions, detailing the affair, before greitens was governor. nbc news has obtained the tape. and we altered her voice. >> he stepped back and i saw a flash through the blindfold. and he said, you're never going to mention my name. >> there was no blackmail. there was no threat of blackmail. there was no threat of a photograph and blackmail. those things are false. >> reporter: lawyers for the

governor's mistress says she is distraught that the information has been made public. it is very disappointing that her ex-husband betrayed her confidence. fallout has been swift. in st. louis, where the city prosecutor is investigating and at the capital in jefferson city. >> it's a sad day in the state of missouri. >> some say those are allegations. but i don't know any woman would go to her husband and lie about having an affair with another man and how it happened. >> reporter: this morning, eric greitens, a former navy s.e.a.l., who campaigned as a family man, now fighting for his political career. political pressure here in missouri is mounting. even some republicans calling for the governor's resignation. but this morning, he says he will not resign. savannah and hoda? >> blake, thank you. also on this busy monday morning, a lot of bleary-eyed people because of the match-up

for super bowl lii. it's all set, as we said at the top of the show. the new england patriots are back to defend their title. and they'll do it against the philadelphia eagles. cue savannah screaming. craig melvin is here. you got it all covered. you're in the middle between these two. >> it was a good day of football yesterday. tom terrific did it once again. putting the patriots back in the big game and once again doing it in dramatic fashion. the opponent, the philadelphia eagles, getting there on the arm of their backup quarterback. >> looking around. >> reporter: tom brady is heading to his eighth super bowl and looking for his sixth ring. >> tom brady does it again. >> reporter: like he has done so many times in his superstar career, the quarterback leading the patriots to a stunning victory over the jacksonville jaguars, 25-20. brady's biggest fan, his wife,

with an injured throwing hand. and the pats trailed jacksonville the whole game. the eagles' win, not close, but no less sweet. the eagles' backup quarterback, nick foles, almost speechless. >> this is humbling and unbelievable. >> reporter: for vikings fans, a double-blow. if minnesota had pulled off a win, they would be the first super bowl team ever to play on their home turf. so many storylines to look at here. the patriots now, with this particular super bowl, this will be their tenth. no team has been to more super bowls than the pats. the eagles have never won a super bowl. they were there in 2005. who were they playing? the pats. they lost 24-21. you might recall five months ago, during the season preview spot from gillette stadium, i predicted that your pats would be in the super bowl. >> that's not a hard prediction. >> it was. tom brady, 40 years old. >> i did see one thing online that the whole hand injury that

i guess. we move, now, to a story we've been following closely. it's a disturbing one, that house of horrors in southern california. this morning, we're learning more about the children who police say were brutally tortured by their own parents over a number of years. miguel almaguer has been following it for us. >> reporter: the suspects in this case face life in prison for criminal charges that are unimaginable. the victims, their 13 children are being cared for at local hospitals. and we're starting to get a clearer picture of their lives. investigators say the torture and confinement came to an end here, but it started years ago for david and louise turpin's 13 children. these photos show the expectant mother, a crib and a tiny nursery. more family photos show smiling children, though we've obscured their faces.

>> they wouldn't tell us their names. we had to guess their names. >> reporter: but neighbors had their suspicions. when she was a kid, she lived next door to the family, a family she says was anything but normal. >> i just remember, more than anything, that they were real strange people. and it hurt my feelings that they didn't want to play with me. and i didn't understand much else than that at the time. >> reporter: the turpins who filed for bankruptcy, lived in texas before moving to california. those who bought their properties say they found filth-splattered walls, mold and mildew everywhere. so much squalor, the homes had to be gutted. >> it's amazing they had children in conditions like this. >> reporter: billy baldwin found this photo of a rope tied to a bed after he bought the turpins' home. prosecutors say the turpins chained and shackled their children.

there were beatings, strangulation and starvation. a classmate of one of the older children, who briefly attended a community college, remembers a school pot luck they both attended. >> it was apparent that he was hungry. and he stood by the table, didn't sit down with his plate. just literally ate plate after plate after plate. >> reporter: this morning, david and louise turpin are in jail. but the children are living in a hell of their own, created by the parents who were supposed to protect them. david and louise turpin have entered not guilty pleas. investigators are combing over their past in texas and california, saying they're only at the beginning of a shocking crime that goes back years. savannah? >> miguel, thank you. we want to mention, megyn kelly will have more on this story, including live interviews with the defendant, louise turpin's sister, as well as the prosecutor, the district attorney in the case. let's switch gears and get a check of the weather from dylan.

>> reporter: since the hurricane roared ashore, more than 200,000 people have fled, often forced to leave these members of the family. some of the storm's smallest victims behind. >> they need our help. >> reporter: so many shelters on the island, like this one, were leveled in the storm. >> after maria we lost everything. >> reporter: watching from 1,500 miles away, one washington, d.c. area animal rescue group wanted to help. but they still had to get there. so, mirra, the founder of lucky dog rescue, reached out to southwest airlines. >> i sent an e-mail about three days before maria. >> reporter: within hours, she had her answer. >> we were able to donate this flight. our employees are flight attendants and employees flying it donated their time. >> reporter: others donated supplies for the people of puerto rico and their pets, making room on the plane for the 16 cats and 46 dogs.
