american high school. >> this happened -- this time it happened in kentucky. we're learning more about the victims and the 15-year-old suspect accused of opening fire on his own classmates. nbc's gape gutierrez is there for us. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we are hearing about incredible stories from another school shooting. 2 teenagers were killed, 18 others wounded. three remain at the hospital and two are in critical condition. >> students in the building, please. in the tech center. >> reporter: this morning, new video taken just moments after it becomes clear there's an active shooter at kentucky marshal county high school. then, panic as school officials rush terrified students to safety. re we're learning the names of some of the victims. bailey holt died at the scene. ryan koch passed away at the hospital. both just 15 years old.

>> you heard a second one and a third one. >> reporter: brian butler, his hands still shaking hours after the shooting, was in the cafeteria, sitting down for breakfast when the first shots rang out. he barricaded himself in a classroom with other students. >> we knew what it was. kids were scrambling over other kids. it was horrible. >> reporter: authorities have not publicly identified the shooter. but witnesses say it was a classmate who was a member of the school's band. this person was seen being led away in handcuffs by police. are you looking at bullying as a possible motive here? >> i won't go into that. >> reporter: the terrifying scene taking a toll on first responders, one of them, a father whose daughter had just been dropped off at the school. he saw the girl who had been killed and had a horrifying first thought. >> same description. he had to go to convince himself that was not his daughter. >> reporter: family members rushing to the scene, grateful their loved ones made it out

alive. >> i was crying on the phone. i was like,bo bro, are you okay? he told me he was okay. i was so relieved. >> reporter: in a ritual ha has become too familiar at school shootings, vigils were held last night. prayers for the entire community. kentucky state police say the suspected shooter will be charged with murder and attem attemptattemp attempted murder. the aunt of one of the victims told us overnight, she was a precious, precious soul and no parent should have to endure burying a child. >> gabe, thank you very much. ahead this morning, there's new twists in the russian meddling election investigation. after attorney general jeff sessions and james comey, special counsel robert mueller is apparently ready to talk to president trump. but will he agree to an interview? we have two reports, starting with peter alexander at the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to

you. this morning, a series of new revatielations in that russia probe, with new indications that robert mueller is zeroing in on the possibility of obstruction of justice, specifically in the firing of former fbi director james comey. will the president sit down for an interview? sources familiar to far tell us nothing face-to-face. but both sides hope to reach an agreement within a matter of weeks. new questions surrounding the white house and the russia investigation. question number one, will president trump voluntarily agree to an interview with robert mueller? people familiar with the discussions tell nbc news, the president's team has not told the special counsel that trump's team is willing to meet. the white house pressed about that possibility on tuesday. >> is that something that the president would be open to? >> we said, probably just about

every day this year, we're going to be fully cooperative with the special counsel. >> reporter: question number two, what did jeff sessions and comey tell mueller's team. sessions met for hours with investigators last week. the president, unphased. >> can you tell us what the attorney general told the special counsel? >> i'm not concerned. >> reporter: the attorney general, let d to the appointme of the special counsel. the investigation was on his mind when he decided to can comey. >> when i decided to just do it, i said to myself, this russia thing with trump and russia is a madeup story. >> reporter: as for comey, mueller's team interviewed late last year, about memos he wrote detailing his interactions with the president before being fired. quoting president trump as saying about michael flynn, i hope you can let this go.

>> i took it as a direction. this is the president of the united states with me alone saying, i hope this. i took it that this is what he wants me to do. >> reporter: the president asked for his loyalty and asked he should drop the flynn investigation. >> out of respect to the special counsel, i'm not going to weigh into matters beyond that. >> reporter: this morning, nbc news has uncovered new details about the meeting with the fbi today. flynn had no lawyer present during that conversation in his west wing office. the same sources say, when the meeting concluded, flynn told no one in the white house about it, concealing it from the white house counsel, the then chief of staff and even the president himself. flynn pleaded guilty last month to lying to investigators during that meeting and contacts with

the russian ambassador. he is now cooperating with robert mueller. cia director mike pompeo has been questioned in possible obstruction of justice and the firing of comey. sally yates on the right. she has met with the special counsel as well. the entire intelligence and law enforcement leadership around president trump in the early days of his administration are all cooperating with robert mueller in some form. hoda and savannah? >> peter alexander at the white house. thanks. as the russia investigation gets closer to the president, he is escalating his fight with the fbi, specifically over missing text messages between two former members of robert mueller's team. hallie jackson with that part of the story. >> reporter: good morning. the department of justice is now investigating what happened to the missing text messages, as the president puts a spotlight on them, tweeting again overnight, where are the 50,000

important text messages between those fbi staffers blaming samsung. that number, 50,000, is the number of texts total between those staffers. it's not clear how many are missing. but the messages are the latest partisan flashpoint here on capitol hill and beyond. the president stepping up his feud with some in the fbi, after a new twist in a text message drama. five months worth of text messages between two fbi staffers, missing. the president tweeting, it's one of the biggest stories in a long time. wow, he writes. >> i think he thinks there's a great cause for concern that five months worth of text messages have gone missing. >> reporter: for months, two fbi staffers, engaged in an affair, exchanged tens of thousands of texts, including some critical of the president, referring to him as an idiot.

one of them, peter strzok, is one of two fbi agents who interviewed michael flynn at the white house a year ago, according to two sources familiar with the interview. strzok was later removed from his position working on robert mueller's russia investigation. though, it's not clear his personal views ever revealed his work. he may have balked at joining that team in the first place. i hesitate in part because of my gut sense and concern there's no big there there. the context is not clear. but senator ron johnson say the text messages may indicate corruption at the highest levels in the fbi. >> we have an informant that's talking about a group that were holding meetings offside. >> secret meetings at the justice department. you have an informant saying that? >> yes. >> reporter: are the missing text messages really a bombshell? some conservatives call it a

conspiracy. from the capitol -- >> they illustrate a conspiracy on the part of some people. >> reporter: to cable news. >> this is going to make watergate seem like a kid stealing from a store. >> reporter: not all agree. >> i don't read anything into it other than that there may be a technical glitch at the bureau. >> reporter: the justice department says software upgrades on samsung phones may be to blame for the missing texts. vowing, we will leave no stone unturned to figure out what happened. democrats call the gop attacks desperation. all of it has the president facing questions about his confidence in the fbi. with new pushback on a report the agency's director, christopher wray, threatened to resign, rather than bow to president from the president's number two. kristen welker.

>> no. you didn't at all. he did not, not even a little bit. nope. he's going to do a good job. >> reporter: it's wray's deputy, andrew mccabe, who is the subject of a new "washington post" report this morning. the president asked mccabe, not long after he was in the oval office, who he voted for in 2016. mccabe's response, according to the paper, he did not vote for anyone. "the washington post" says that conversation is of particular interest to special counsel robert mueller. as for the text messages, samsung is now out with a statement saying it believes their devices are not the cause of the issue, adding that the company will cooperate in any investigation. savannah? >> all right, hallie. lots to follow there. thank you very much. ahead on this busy wednesday morning, there's been a disturbing terror attack in afghanistan. gunmen storming the offices of a

children's charity there. kelly cobiella has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. this is the second major attack by militants on foreign targets in afghanistan this week. this time, the target, an aid agency, save the children, in jalalabad on the border with pack stakista pakistan. it's not clear how many staff or children may have been in the offices when the attack started or how many may be trapped. thick, black smoke and sounds of a gun battle. children seen running from the compound this morning after gunmen blasted their way in, minutes after the offices for aid agencies save the children had opened. first a car bomb, then rocket-propelled grenades and bullets. after that, the children and people started running away, this eyewitness said. the charity tweeting that several people had been injure. the taliban, not claiming responsibility. in fact, tweeting they had nothing to do with the raid.

the attack just days after a violent siege at a hotel in kabul. americans are among those killed. >> there are multiple u.s. fatalities in afghanistan. some of the family members are being notified. >> reporter: inside, charred rooms, broken glass and bullet holes. this greek airline pilot said he hid in a box spring mattress for 14 hours. >> 15 people inside the room, 5 of us got killed. we moved from one balcony to the next balcony. they shot a lady. she was praying five times a day and she got killed. >> reporter: special forces rescued more than 100 people after what one survivor called 14 hours of hell. back on the attack on the save the children offices so far, 20

right? we have more news. the former team doctor for usa gymnastics is set to be sentenced today after days of emotional and brave testimony from a long parade of his victims. kate snow with all this. >> reporter: good morning. it's been another powerful week of victim statements culminating tuesday, with one gymnast describing how she hurt herself in order to escape dr. nassar's abuse. this morning, in an nbc news exclusive, i spoke with shannon miller who has won more olympic medal s than any other gymnast. she is on a mission to change the sport so it can never happen again. shannon miller led the magnificent seven, the gold medal winning team in 1996. she says dr. larry nassar never abused her. but she was horrified to hear one gymnast after the next speak

out. >> i am so in awe of their courage. >> reporter: courage she hopes will be a catalyst for real change across the sport. 3 of the 20 board members have resigned amid the scandal. miller was part of a search team that found a new ceo for the organization in december. but she says these are just baby steps. >> it's a good start. it's something. but it is not enough. significantly more has to happen. >> reporter: she says to make gymnastics safe for girls general, procedures need to be overhauled. >> i mean, it's common sense not to have a male trainer in the room alone with a female of any age. making sure the trainers don't have cell phone numbers of the minors that they're treating. that's inappropriate. >> reporter: in court tuesday, jaw-dropping testimony from former u.s. national champion gymnast mattie larsen.

faced a major unexpected expense last year, averaging more than $2,500. and only 39% of americans said they could cover a $1,000 emergency with savings right now. jean chatzky is here. she's going to help us save more and save smart in 2018. hello, miss jean. we want to encourage people to prioritize saving. it's hard to do. >> if i asked you, how do you get more fiscally responsible, save more, spend less. we know there's two ways to succeed. you want to be mindful about it or totally mindless about it. in the middle doesn't work. we've got five solutions that fall into both of those categories. >> okay. give us tip number one. isolate spending and saving. >> this is a mindful tip. there's a phenomenon called mental accounting. richard daler in chicago won the nobel prize for this last year. you give every dollar a job. by assigning it a job, it's more

likely to do that job. you separate your spending money from your saving money. and it's a good thing to save first and have your spending money in cash. >> okay. that's interesting. you can use apps to help you save. that's your next tip. >> we've been talking about a lot of new apps we put on the phone. these are mindless. you set them up and they save for you. stash is a great one. it allows you to save, starting with as little as $5. it puts it into 40 differentf o portfolios. digit looks at your accounts and figures out how much you can afford to save. if you're a gamer, something called long game sets it up like you're on a mission to save. and it allows you to play some lotto-like games, as well. >> next, know yourself. how does that help when it comes to saving? >> you have to figure out, are you a big picture person or a more detail-oriented person?

if you're not sure, did you schedule out every moment of the day? >> no. >> you're a big picture person. >> i'm a lay around person. >> you're going to be better off going in the opposite direction of the basic tendencies. if you're big picture, you want to set specific savings goals. $5 a day. $25 a week. if you're detail-oriented, aim for the stars as much as possible. >> it's about your mindset. build a buffer. >> everybody has those expenses that get them into trouble every year. sometimes the gifts. sometimes the holidays. sometimes the quarterly expenses. take a look back at what these were last year and build a buffer. this is not your emergency fund. this is a separate account that you can reach into when you need it. >> okay. this requires so much organization. the last has to do with mindfulness. >> right. when you wake up in the morning,
