says they'll call on congress to pass a trillion dollar immigration package. >> america is open for business. >> reporter: the white house not weighing in on whether the president will address one of the biggest cultural flash points, the me too movement. during a new interview with british journalist piers morgan, the president was asked if he sees himself as a feminist. >> no, i wouldn't say i'm a femini feminist. i think that would be maybe going too far. i'm for women and men. >> reporter: morgan even asking the president about his mental and physical health. >> as you said, stable, genius, your words. >> i am a stable genius. >> reporter: the president will deliver the speech with a number of controversies looming. over the weekend, steve wynn stepping down as the republican finance chair after allegations of sexual misconduct. and the russia probe, democrats and even republicans expressing support for legislation to

protect special counsel robert mueller after revelations that mr. trump wanted to fire him last summer. >> it certainly wouldn't hurt to put that extra safeguard in place given the latest stories. >> reporter: although some republicans say not so fast. >> i don't think there's a need for legislation to protect mueller. >> reporter: a back and forth over black unemployment. it started when music icon jay-z was asked about the decrease in black unemployment. >> it's not about money at the end of the day. money doesn't equate to happiness. you can't treat someone like -- it goes back to the whole thing, treat me really bad and pay me well. >> the president firing back. somebody please inform jay-z that because of my policies black unemployment has been reported to be at the lowest rate ever recorded. the black unemployment rate is at its lowest rate in history, 6.8%, but that rate actually started to decline in 2010 under former president obama. as for the state of the union

address, it's become a tradition for presidents to hit the road to sell their message, president trump is not planning a multi-state trip this week. mr. trump is starting the key week with a high stakes meeting at the white house with diplomats from the u.n. security council. >> kristen, thank you. a programming note, nbc news will have live coverage of the president's state of the union. it all starts tomorrow night, 9:00 eastern. now to the worsening flu epidemic and its impact on communities all across the country. this morning the death toll is rising. more schools are closing, and the cdc is out with new warnings. gabe gutierrez has that story for us. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is shaping up to be the worst flu zp rch and, swine flu epidemic and it is not letting up and now we're hearing a gut wrenching message from the family of one of the victims. the worst flu season in almost a decade is getting deadlier. here in annapolis, the family of 37-year-old carly slaven is

heart brain. >> things just went downhill so fast. sorry. we were all there holding her when she died. >> reporter: her father says carly died just three days after being diagnosed with the flu. the symptoms quickly escalated into pneumonia. >> she got the kids shots. my son being in the military got his shots and she didn't get hers. >> reporter: the flu widespread in every state but hawaii. dozens of schools like this one in florida shutting down. the cdc says so far this year 37 children have died compared to just 8 at this time last year. but the scdc says it's the elderly most at risk followed by adults ages 56 to 64. doctors emphasize the best defense again virus even now is a flu shot. connecticut has been hit hard with 32 flu-related deaths so far this season.

carl can't help but wonder if getting the flu shot might have saved his daughter. he has this message for other families. >> this is not just a news report where somebody else died of the flu. there's a whole family, little kids, that there is no normal for them now. we want carly's death -- i guess i should say our sacrifice to make a difference for somebody. >> reporter: so heartbreaking. he says despite concerns about the vaccine's effectiveness, it is worth it. the cdc several weeks ago thought the flu season was peaking but it appears to be getting worse. doctors are seeing three times as many flu cases this month than all of last flu season. >> gabe, thank you. also this morning, a fascinating and concerning story, concerns being raised about fitness trackers used by members of the u.s. military stationed overseas. and that is because an interactive map available on the

internet shows the potential locations of u.s. bases and the patterns of life inside those bases. here's nbc's pentagon correspondent hans nicholls. >> reporter: this is a global heat map. it used gps technology to show where athletes using fitness devices are working out. the problem is it's also active in war zones. lighting up popular routes inside the known locations of u.s. bases in afghanistan and syria. it essentially provides an electronic bird's eye view inside heavily guarded bases. first reported by t"the washington post", it was discovered by a curious australian student who wondered if it showed the locations of u.s. soldiers. he got his location when he zoomed on syria and said it lit up like a christmas tree. this morning the pentagon is investigating and saying, the dod takes matters like these seriously and is reviewing the situation to determine if any additional training or guidance

is required. in afghanistan the roads of the kandahar air hit lit up by soldiers walking and running routes. a u.s. operating base outlined by intense activity inside the wire. the data isn't in real time and the heat map was first made last november by a fitness app. they have an option to turn off the data transmission service. in a statement, the company says, we take the safety of our community seriously and are committed to working with military and government officials to address sensitive areas that might appear. we have a lot more to get to including a new warning tied to your money. hackers targeting atms with a scheme that causes them to spit out cash. tom costello is in washington where the secret service is heading up that investigation. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this technique has already been used in other countries around

the world. it's called jackpoting. and now federal law enforcement is putting the nation's banks on notice that the threat has come to the united states. this morning an urgent warning from the secret service and the companies that make most of the atms in the country. criminal hackers are targeting cash machines in a scheme known as jackpoting. the criminals override an atm and turn it into a sort of slot machine rapidly spitting out cash, up to 40 bills every 23 seconds. >> the types of atmts being hit are typically one-off machines you find in a convenient store. >> reporter: the secret service says criminals range from individual suspects to large organized groups, from local criminals to international organized crime syndicates. the stolen cash isn't coming out of your personal bank accounts, just the machines themselves, so the banks are the victims,

though experts warn this kind of attack can still have a serious effect on the rest of us. >> we all have to pay for the bank to losses, so in a way we're all sharing in the loss. >> reporter: so how do they do it? the thieves must have physical access to the atm and either by mitting it with malware or by using specialized electronics, they take over its functions. >> they can inject code to allow them to access it remotely. once they do that, they can set the commands, dispensing thousands of dollars until their co-conspirators can scoop up the cash and cart it away. >> two of the largest atm manufacturers say they're working with their bank customers to implement counter measures and solutions. one secret service agent told us last night that jackpoting is like a 21st century bank robbery. the attacks often happen in broad daylight, thieves dressed

this. i'm done. >> reporter: this morning scott baio in charge of a counter attack. the 57-year-old actor firmly denying allegations that appeared on twitter sunday saying he molested his former charles in charge co-star nicole eggert when she was a minor. baio calling the accusations 100% lies before stating his case in a facebook live video shot by his wife. >> she's my best friend in the world and then all of a sudden i'm the boogie man. >> eggert, now 46 took to twitter first saying, ask scott baio what happened in his garage at his house when i was a minor. creep. then in a subsequent series of tweets that have since been deleted, eggert claimed baio repeatedly molested her starting at age 14. >> jamie, anybody can make a mistake. >> honestly, charles, i don't think i am making a mistake. >> reporter: baio and eggert started together in the popular sitcom charles in charge which ran from 1984 to 1990. while baio denies any sexual misconduct with eggert during

properly vaccinated and additional proof that they do provide psychiatric and emotional support. >> they'll say like, oh, i need this dog, but it's just their pet. an emotional support animal or a service dog is not a pet. >> reporter: delta seeing an 84% increase in reported animal incidents since 1916 including biting, urine eighting, even defecating on planes. the national federation of the blind calls the 48-hour measure unnecessary and unlawful, saying it violates the u.s. department of transportation's air carrier access act which prohibits commercial airlines from discriminating against disabled passengers. >> i feel penalized by this policy. >> reporter: pat is blind and travels with her service dog, iris, and works as a consultant for open doors organization, a nonprofit that supports disabled travelers. >> the real problem is the behavior of animals and the lack of responsibility people are

welcome back. a growing number of social media celebrities are generating big bucks because they have millions of followers. >> but it turns out that some of that success may be kind of misleading. inexpensive bot armies have made it easier to create things called fake followers that artificially enhance someone's profile. >> reporter: fake followers on social media now the center of an identity theft investigation launched by the new york state attorney general. under the microscope to influence politicians, celebrities and other influencers trying to get your attention. bots are fake social media accounts that can potato, st, r and like. according to "the new york times" they stole the names and home towns of real social media users to make at least 50,000 bot accounts look authentic. the stolen identities came from

every u.s. state and dozens of countries. devumi did not respond to nbc's request for comment. the company denied wrongdoing to "the new york times." not all bots steal real identities but purchasing fake followers is easy and cheap. we bought them from the same company with help from the institute of the future. >> you can go to a website that's publicly available and buy 1,000 bots for maybe even just a couple of dollars. >> $25. >> i'm buying 10,000 retweets. >> reporter: twitter under pressure to ban fake followers says it catches more than half a million bots a day for 6.4 million a week, adding in a tweet, the tactics used by devumi and others violate our policies and are unacceptable to us. we are working to stop them and companies like them. >> is this legal to be able to buy all of these bots and influence people? >> the u.s. government in terms of the laws that are surrounding being able to buy followers or buy fake content, it's the wild

fatone? >> you're an in sync fan. now we're going to sear the meat and it's going to go quick, like a minute or two per side. >> i'll do that. >> you do that and i'm going to get going on the onions and peppers, a little bit of olive oil. i like the cast iron skillets because it gets a caramelization. let those sits for 20 minutes until they get nice and caramelized. good job with the meat and we're going to add all of that together. here's an important part. are you guys cheese whiz? >> whiz. >> i went with the whiz. you can also use american cheese or provolone. >> you didn't have anything to drink yet? >> just trying to keep my job. >> if you do the whiz, warm it up in the microwave a little bit before you assemble the sandwiches. >> what kind of beer do you have with this one? >> that is the philly -- >> the philadelphia? >> yes, exactly.
