welker. hey, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda and savannah. officials here at the white house are trying to keep the focus on the first state of the union address. mr. trump will aim to strike a note of unify even as the russia probe is sparking all-out partisan warfare. this morning, the president plans to address a union sharply divided as republicans escalate a multipronged attack against the department of justice and fbi. overnight, the house intelligence committee voting along party lines to release a controversial and classified memo which purportedly accuses senior fbi officials of misconduct. republicans say it shows the russia probe was tainted from the start. now it's up to the president to decide whether to release the memo to the public. a senior administration official says the memo will be reviewed first. >> well, they want the see what's in it and there are national security concerns, it's a classified document and the

president will make that call. >> reporter: democrats blasted the memo saying it cherry picks facts in an attempt to discredit the investigation and they slammed republicans for voting against the release of an opposing memo written by democrats. >> this committee voted to put the president's personal interests perhaps their own political interests above the national interests. >> reporter: it capped a day of drama after andrew mccabe announced he is stepping down. friends and co-workers tell nbc news mccabe left on his own. but they say two big factors played a role in his decision to live. the justice department will issue a report expected to strongly criticize how the fbi handled the clinton e-mail investigation including mccabe's role and the sustained criticism of mccabe by president trump on twitter and in person. including the night the president fired james comey. nbc news has learned the

president fumed when he watched comey who is in l.a. board a government plane back to washington. according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the president called mccabe to complain. and then suggested to mccabe that he ask his wife how it feels to be a loser. mccabe's ran for state senate in virginia and lost. and james comey said in part, special agent andrew mccabe stood tall when small people were trying to tear down an institution we all depend on. the white house insisted the president had nothing to do with mccabe's departure. as for the state of the i don't know on -- state of the union address, he will touch on the jobs and economy, infrastructure reform, immigration reform and national security. the first lady will be in attendance with 15 guests as is tradition. all of the president's children will be there with the exception

of his youngest son barron. savannah? >> thank you. we are now joined by sarah huckabee sanders. good to see you. >> good morning, great to be here. thanks for having me on. >> let's talk about the state of the union address. the president is coming into his first state of the union with a rip roaring economy, low unemployment. the wind at his back in terms of the economy. and yet, his own personal approval ratings are at record lows. does he look at this as an opportunity to kind of build that back up, to try to unite the country. what will he say? >> absolutely. look, the president will talk about a number of things tonight. certainly the economy will be front and center. we have had a historic year. record breaking moments throughout the year. in large part due to the president's leadership on deregulation. and a huge capstone at the end of the year with the tax cuts and the jobs act which we have seen have immediate impact with several hundred companies

stepping forward and giving pay raises, bonuses because of that tax cut and that tax reform package. you're going to see a big focus on national security. this has been something that the president has talked about for a long time. for the first time in years, we are seeing massive impacts on isis and they're on the run and major progress has been made on that front. the president made that a big part of his administration. you will see a focus on that. immigration, the president laid out the framework that is a bipartisan deal that brings both republicans and democrats to the table and gives everybody something of what they wanted most. >> so sarah -- >> the first attempt we have to seen to deliver on this topic and on this issue in a real chance to make some big reform and we're excited to see that take place. >> so lots to talk about at the state of the union and behind the scenes as well. andrew mccabe abruptly resigned

yesterday earlier than expected. the president has made no secret of the fact that he does not care for andrew mccabe. you said that he wasn't part of the decision process. was he happy to see andrew mccabe go? >> look, i haven't asked him specifically about that, but he certainly has voiced some frustrations with some of the actions by the deputy director, but the bigger issue is the president has full and complete confidence in fbi director wray and he has left these decisions to him and i would refer you to them for specifics. right now, and certainly top of mind for this president isn't about deputy director mccabe but about the state of the union, it's about bringing the country together, setting an optimistic vision tonight and you will see the president's heart in this speech. i think you will see the patriotsism of this country. and i think it will be an

incredible and powerful night. >> back to the russia investigation for a moment because let's go big picture. here's what i don't quite understand. the president has said there's no collusion, there's nothing wrong there, nothing to see here. yet one by one, he's gone after every single one of the justice department officials connected to this, whether it's his own attorney general or james comey or andrew mccabe even saying he would fire director mueller. if there's nothing to see here, why does he go after all of the justice department officials connected to the russia investigation? doesn't it at a minimum look bad? >> look, he hasn't gone after the special counsel, we have volunteered thousands upon thousands of documents. over 20 different individuals have done interviews. we have been transparent as possible -- >> but he's gone after every single person at the top of this investigation including the attorney general he appointed so i guess the question is, if there's nothing to see here and he wants to cooperate, why does he continually go after people who are connected to the investigation and just trying to

do the investigation? doesn't that make it look like he has something to hide? >> frankly, if some of these individuals were just trying to do the investigation, what they would have done it and it would have been wrapped up. time and time again, the only thing that has come out of these and every single time after interviews, after reviewing records, the on thing they that come back to is no, we haven't found anything yet. frankly, i think the people that are frustrated most isn't the president, it's the american people. they're sick and tired of being inundated with russian fever. they're focused on us moving forward and that's what the president is trying to do. >> but on that issue -- >> what we'll see him do tonight. >> had the president hot fired director comey there wouldn't be a special counsel and an obstruction of justice investigation that centers around him? didn't his own actions bring this upon himself? >> look, i think the actions of director comey and certainly

every day since his firing we have seen more and more reason he shouldn't have been the head of the fbi. it's turned out that he was leaking information. i think the president made the right decision. and for us to go back and try to recreate history is just simply not possible. again, i think that it has been very clear time and time again there's absolutely no collusion whatsoever with the president or this administration. we're ready to move on. i know the country is ready to move on and we look forward to the special counsel wrapping this up. so we can continue to focus on all of the great things we were doing. imagine how many more good things for the country we would have been able to do this past year if everybody hadn't been so focused on this russia -- >> three's true. but i have to go. but you have to say that the press focuses on it, but that's because the president is focused on it and tweeting about it. see you tonight for the state of the union.

sarah huckabee sanders, thank you for your time. and nbc news will have live coverage at 9:00/6:00 pacific. the nation's worsening flu endickic, hospitals are fighting the outbreak. some facilities are now reporting a vaccine shortage. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in atlanta with the very latest on all that. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. gradys, atlanta's biggest hospital, this mobile emergency room is opening for the first time in part to deal with the flood of flu patients. grady's regular er usually saw more than 300 patients. well, one day last week it say more than 5 -- it saw more than 500. this morning across the country the outbreak is not loosening its grip and the race is on to get the flu shot. >> i thought now is a time to be a little bit more proactive. >> as mom i needed to get it done. >> reporter: the cdc said there's overall enough supply,

but the skyrocketing need has prompted health care facilities to scramble. >> for us to be on our third order, just speaks to the demand that we have had. >> reporter: hospitals are taking drastic measures. this one in atlanta opening an er on wheels. 14 extra beds to help deal with the onslaught of sick patients. in new york the governor has declared a flu disaster allowing pharmacies to give the flu vaccine to children and teenagers. even though we're four months into the flu season, people have a lot of questions. so here's what you need to know. what should you do within the first 24 hours of getting sick? first, stay home. and if you're a high-risk group such as the elderly take antiviral medication as soon as possible. >> so tamiflu is a very good antiviral medication. taken within the first 24 to 48 hours, tamiflu can reduce your symptoms by about one to two days. >> reporter: what should you do if someone in your household is

diagnosed? sleep in separate beds, avoid touching your face and keep disinfecting household surfaces. should pregnant women get the flu shot? >> if you're pregnant and you have not gotten the flu shot yet, we recommend you still get it. even throughout this flu season. >> reporter: if you have symptoms should you still get a flu shot? if you have acute illness with a fever you should not get a flu shot. how different is this from what you have seen in previous seasons? >> this is much different, much higher than it has been. >> reporter: so far this flu season there have been at least 37 pediatric deaths. now, too early to tell how many of the children who died did not get the flu vaccine but the cdc says in previous years about 80% of children who passed away did not get the flu shot. grady expects to have this mobile hospital for a month and possibly through the end of the

causes alzheimer's or have any effective treatments. you said you spent really a year trying to understand how complex this disease is. how it has alluded everybody and yet you're still optimistic and feel that you can find a solution. >> yes, while i'm optimistic bringing in new ideas. that's what we're going to have to do to have great drugs for this in the next 10 to 15 year. >> reporter: as cochair of the largest private foundation, gates is already fighting hiv, polio and malaria around the world, but this battle is different. he said too many alzheimer's dollars are going to mainstream treatments that won't work. that's why 50 of the $100 million foundation will go to the dementia fund that sponsors new unconventional research into the alzheimer's cure. so you think by widening the net, by looking in places that we haven't conventionally been looking therein lies the answer? >> absolutely.

>> reporter: to help fast track new treatments his other $50 million will fund a national patient registry to speed up recruitment for clinical trials and a global database for alzheimer's research, so scientists can easily share data with each other, something not done today. do you think you can get people to collaborate, to share, and therein might lead us to an answer that's maybe out there, but just because we haven't shared or collaborated we don't know it? >> yes, it's very complex. by look agent the data we start to understand are there multiple syndromes here than slightly different. and, you know, is it different in different races, is it different from men than women? one of the things we're trying to figure out is when does the alzheimer's really get started? >> right. >> when would you need to treat somebody to completely avoid them getting alzheimer's. >> you and i are about the same age and i worry about getting alzheimer's. do you? >> sure. i want my brain to stay intact

the president will have the nation's attention tonight when he delivers his very first state of the union address, but an escalating fight over the russia probe and the fbi shakeup is cop pete -- competing for his own attentions. here is kristin welker. >> reporter: president trump is putting the finishing touches on the state of the union address. he will aim to strike a note of unity even as tensions mount over the russia probe. overnight, republicans on the house intelligence committee voted along party lines to release a controversial and classified memo which purportedly accuses senior fbi officials of misconduct. democrats say that memo draws from cherry picked facts and is aimed at delegitimizing the russia probe. the president has five days to decide whether to release that memo. that dispute comes as deputy fbi director andrew mccabe announced he was stepping down earlier than expected. the reason -- an upcoming inspector general report is

expected to sharply criticize the handling of the clinton e-mail probe and the other factor, fatigue, after the president has publicly and privately criticized him. this morning on "today," savannah asked press secretary sarah huckabee sanders about the president's apparent penchant for attacking law enforcement officials. >> if there's nothing to see here and he wants to cooperate why does he continually go after people who are connected to the investigation and just trying to do the investigation? i mean, doesn't it look like he has something to hide? >> frankly in the individuals were trying to do the investigation they would have done it and it would have been wrapped up. time and time again, the only thing that's coming out of these in every single time after interviews and after reviewing records the only thing they come back to is that, no, we haven't found anything. >> reporter: as for the state of the union address, the first lady will be in attendance tonight along with 15 guests. all of the president's children will be there with the exception of the youngest son barron.

>> thank you. we should mention our live network coverage of the president's state of the union begins tonight 9:00 eastern, 6:00 pacific. the pentagon is accelerating a clamp down on public information about the war in afghanistan. the federal agency that provides that data has been placed under a gag order. it will no longer reveal details about the size of the afghanistan's military, or how much of that country is controlled by the taliban. this comes months after president trump announced a new strategy to break the deadlock in the war. an outrageous crime caught on camera has police in los angeles looking for a a flash mob on wheels. it shows dozens of bicycle riders swarming into the convenience store on sunday afternoon. they go through the aisles, grabbing drinks and snacks and this went on for several minutes. there was only one clerk behind the counter. he was overwhelmed. the mob got away with about $3,000 worth of merchandise.

welcome back, everybody. we all know richard engel as a fearless nbc correspondent. >> and a really good friend. but today he is here with his wife mary and little boy henry and they'll tell us about the courage it takes to face a different kind of challenge. we'll talk to the whole family in a moment. but first, their story in their own words. >> wow, look at that. >> when henry was born, just over two years ago, he made our life complete. the sweetest, happiest boy. but almost right away, something didn't -- >> the problem was henry wasn't really progressing. he wasn't sitting up when he should. he wasn't clapping his hands when he should. we went to every doctor we could find. >> cardiologists. >> sight, blood tests. >> gastroenterologist. >> everybody. it was a mystery. and we thought, well, there are late bloomers. we decided to do a full genetic scan. the results came in last

september while i was was troops in south korea when the convoy pulled over. so i called the doctor and he said, we found something and it's very, very severe. it's life long, not treatable. i was in the state of shock. i got back in the convoy, like shaking. it was the worst day of my life. >> henry, with a serious genetic disorders. for boys, it's very rare and for now, untreatable. i called you and i said we have the result, and i said, it's not good. it's not just delay, it means life long, permanent, untreatable physical and intellectual impairment. and you -- >> yeah, i just said no, no, no, no, no. >> unfortunately, the more we learned about it, the worse the news got.

doctors have told us henry will likely never walk, talk, dress himself or have the mental capacity beyond a toddler. and that health problems are likely coming as well. >> kids with this mutation tend to have epilepsy or seizures of some kind. >> but he's generally quite happy. but it could be a darker road ahead. the docs have said that he could get rigid. it's a door i -- corridor i don't want to go down. no matter what happens, we want henry to know he's loved. he gets back what we put in and more. play has a purpose. we try to keep him moving, hoping every tiny crawl makes his muscles stronger. good job, good job. every moment can help develop a skill. even lunch. to get him a little bit of that dexterity.

he has physiotherapy daily, and hospital visits twice a week to stimulate his senses. >> basically, i'm his manager for that. and cheerleader. it gives me purpose. it's important. and i see it helping him. >> but this story may have a happy ending. for henry and many other children. because there is hope that henry holds the key to a treatment. a lot depends on the work being done by dr. zogby at the duncan institute at the texas children's hospital. >> henry's mutation is unique in the world, but because it's unique is what makes it so valuable. sometimes when the rarest thing you can learn the most. >> doctor zogby's lab has collected henry's cells and the goal is to find a way to boost the protein that is essential for brain function. >> so we're using henry's cells

to monitor the level of the protein. >> reporter: dr. zogby said if she can boost the protein safety it would be a breakthrough for henry and for many children. >> we know today there are hundreds of genes that can cause autism or intellectual disability or complex psychiatric disorders. using henry's cells to study rhett's syndrome, once successful it can be applied to the diseases. >> while we wait for scientific progress, we try to make henry's life as normal as possible. >> it's hard. sometimes i really have to get myself up. i don't want to see a 9-month-old -- it's easy to get lost in it. >> but there are also moments of joy and togetherness. it's made our relationship stronger, actually. and we're all we've got. we're all he's got right now. so we need to be a team. >> and richard, mary, henry,

welcome. first, we love you. >> thank you. >> we love you so much. and we know you're a courageous guy, richard, we have seen you out in the fields. but this is a different kind of courage. >> well, it's not a story that anybody wants to tell and it was very difficult for us. but we wanted to raise awaren s awareness, to pecial needs children, children who are challenging know that they're alone. it can feel very lonely when you go down the street and you see other children behaving quote/unquote normally and knowing that his life and our life is never going to be like and we wanted to point out the research. and that there is hope. and maybe he can contribute to that progress. >> well, henry, he's so special. we love up on henry a little bit before we came on here and mary, you're doing -- both of you are just pouring your whole hearts and everything into this boy. but it must have been hard to think about like coming out publicly and talking about it

because it's so raw. >> it's painful and very personal. but we appreciate being able to do it. and hopefully like you said it's lonely. other people maybe will see this and feel less alone and we will too. you know, and what they're doing at the texas children's hospital is really amazing and it gives us hope. it gets us through every day. >> can we talk about that for a minute because i love in the piece you said, wait a minute, this story may have a happy ending. so what are you looking for, what are you hoping for? >> so his mutation is potentially one of a kind. the doctors said it's first one in existence. and while that's obviously very challenging and difficult for us and certainly for him, in that rarity there may be the key to his own treatment and a treatment to many others. so what dr. zogby is trying to do is figure out a way to boost this protein that he doesn't have enough of. if she can figure out how to do that safely, it could be applied

to a whole host of other genetic disorders so it could be at the end of the day he has a key to helping himself and potentially many others. but look, we have to get there first. they're working on the research. they're hard at work right now. that's what we're driving for. >> when you talk about henry, he is happy. a little smile. >> such a good boy. what you guys have been doing and the therapy, it's helping. >> it is helping. our milestones are not necessarily milestones. we call them inch stones. so he doesn't -- you know, it's slow, but there is progress. and he works really hard and we have fun. we make it fun. >> where do you guys -- lastly, where do you find your strength? i'm looking at two people and i know -- i can see how strong you are. where does it come from? >> from henry. yeah. i mean, you can't not get up in the morning. you just have to get up and go and do it and take care of him. he's raring to go. you know?
