are just five days away from super bowl v. we can tell you the eagles will hold their first practice here in minnesota tomorrow. we will hear more from eagles players come up a little bit later on this mash up with the patriots. that coming up in just a moment. for now let's send is back to the nbc studios in philadelphia. meantime our top story tonight here at home, president trump talking directly to the nation in his first state of the union address. he tried to push for unity calling this a new american moment. >> we all share the same home, the same heart, the same destiny and the same great american flag. >> we sent nbc 10's lorren make to washington, d.c. he really hit a lot of the issues you told

us to expect earlier today. >> reporter: he did, jim. there were some unexpected points here. the keeping open the guantanamo bay detention center, keeping down drug costs, but issues like immigration continue to dominate as the president makes his pitch for unity. >> the president of the united states. >> reporter: at his first state of the union address, president donald trump calling this a new american moment. >> so to every citizen watching at home tonight no matter where you've been or where you've come from, this is your time. >> reporter: the president ticking off achievements from his first year from taxes -- >> in april this will be the last time you will ever file under the old and very broken system, and millions of americans will have more take-home pay starting next month. a lot more. >> reporter: -- to health care.

>> we repealed the core of the disastrous obamacare. the individual mandate is now gone. >> reporter: that getting a mixed reaction in a divided chamber on a night when the president made multiple appeals for bipartisanship on things like infrastructure. but immigration, the disagreement still clear. >> under the current broken system a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives. under our plan we focus on the immediate family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children. >> reporter: division despite the president's appeal for common ground. and the democrats chose congressman joe kennedy to give their response tonight. he had some very critical words for the president saying, quote,

this administration isn't just tarting the laws that protect us, they are targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of protection. and just a few moments ago i spoke with local lawmakers on both sides of the aisle about their reaction to the president's speech. take a listen. >> it's one thing to talk the talk. but you also need to follow it up with actions. and on infrastructure, on middle class job development, on initiatives that raise real wages we have seen precious little from this white house. >> said all the right things tonight, but the question is is there going to be a follow-up and will there be the right tone? that's really important. it's not just the position and but the tone is very important, too. so that's what we're hoping he can standby. >> reporter: and another big question as things like the issue of immigration goes forward is whether the president going to work just within his own framework or whether he will

legarret legarrette blount had a presuper bowl showdown. john, these two were teammates for the past super bowl last year, and now they're super bowl rivals. how'd it go? >> reporter: it is unbelievable. and yes, it is a prelude to the super eagles versus patriots tonight, legarrette versus ron kousky. let's take a look at legarrette and gronk. as you said they were teammates last year and now legarrette blount is trying to win two super bowls in a row. and gronk broke some news he expects to play on sunday. i spoke to them. >> it was an amazing opportunity. i enjoyed it.

the super bowl the patriots beat them, but it was so close. it was by just a field goal. tonight we caught up with a former eagles on that super bowl team that lost to the pats, still painful to think about. let's bring in nbc 10's brandon hudson who's live in center city. it's been 13 long years of this super bowl drought, unlucky 13 i go say. >> well, let's hope this year is lucky year. there's a young generation of eagles fans who have not seen banners like this this late in the season. we spoke to a player from 2014 who says he's nervous but confident this years squad will bring home a championship. at the tick's sporting goodies in mount laurel will had an ax to sign. jeremiah trotter also known as the ax man. >> anybody that can get a

football or a injuresary or helmets sign. i was like i got to get an ax. >> reporter: he wasn't even born. his grandfather took him to meet trotter tonight. andrews watched the birds lose in the super bowl in '04 and 1980. but andrews says he feels good about this year, and so does jeremiah trotter. >> they're doing it for us, the past veterans, for the fans, the city, and even for the fans that are not here with us anymore. >> reporter: and jacqueline, just think there are those eagles fans who were kids during the last eagles super bowl run who are now either in college or adults with kids of their own. jeremiah trotter told us he met an adult fan who told us he remembers watching trotter when he was 10 years old. >> reporter: wow, all right,

francis. thank you for that. philadelphia police are gearing up to keep everyone safe on sunday, when people will be celebrating what we hope is an eagles super bowl win. but this time around the plan won't involve chrisco. the police commissioner says they are using something different this time around. >> i can't tell you that there won't still be attempts. but i just will suspect some of them will be far more difficult than they were with the cristco attempt. >> he hopes everyone will celebrate responsibly. nbc 10, your official eagles station is the only place you can watch super bowl lii. and here you will find coverage

back home in montgomery county tonight one family is turning their yard into a mini link if you will. nbc 10 eren baskerville shows us their motivation all new at 11:00. if you build it, they will honk. a field of dreams sits in the front yard in collegeville. drivers are constantly honking their horns in appreciation. vicky tells nbc 10 it took several days to finish this salute to tear favorite team. it all started after the nfc championship game with carving out the letters to the world eagles. ever since the family has heard the honking from outside. >> people dry by and stop and take pictures, how does that make you feel? >> like celebrities. >> reporter: his sickness would not stop his love for the team. it agree into a mini field and

studios with jim and tammy. >> looks like you're holding it together well and staying as warm as you possibly can. but back at home we had a flash freeze, jacky. caused some trouble out there with some drivers. in fact, three people are recovering from minor injuries after a 14-car pileup crash. this happened on the deliluroad overpass. officials are saying it was a fresh freeze. >> they fell so quickly. in fact, we went out to our cars in the parking lot and we found a thin coat of ice. we had that snow falling and melting and refreezing very quickly tonight. and we do have that problem on a number of roadways. and if you go out on your steps, your stoops, your porches, please be careful. temperatures are dropping very quickly. outside, clear skies. it's too bad we don't have that

big super red moon out tonight. tonight is 24 degrees. it's going to be cold tonight and cold tomorrow. let's go to the twin cities where we just saw jacqueline as we gaze across what looks like a spaceship there. that's the stadium. comparable temperatures there. tonight we're going to drop to 19 in philadelphia, 18 in trenton. 15 in coatesville, 21 in stone harbor. atlantic city, you'll see 18, and dover you'll see 20 under those very chilly skies. we're going to skip ahead to friday because that's our next chance of snow. we'll see rain changing to snow early friday morning. still some ground hog snow. and then super bowl sunday, we're looking at what could be accumulating snow in the afternoon and evening. this could be a problem because this could be build up on the

roadways. so please follow the forecast for the remainder of the week if you plan to drive anywhere on super bowl sunday. another one on the way. they'll get a bit of dusting of snow tonight and tomorrow as well. let's walk you through the hour by hour. we are watching authorize temperatures drop in those north and northwest winds. you will wake up in the upper teens tomorrow and clouds will move in for our thursday. rain on the heels of that in the afternoon. overnight it'll be rain changing over to a mix, and then snow friday morning. and it'll be out of here late morning. and then temperatures plummet once again for saturday. and looks what comes in on super bowl sunday. yep, we have no moving in the afternoon and evening, and it looks like this will be accumulating snow out there. well, 12 in minneapolis. that's saturday in the morning, a wind chill of 2. that drops down to, oh, gosh,

like 11 below 0 by sunday morning and a 24 below 0 wind chill. and by kick off we're looking at 3 with a wind chill of 39 degrees. that was in michigan in 1982. the warmest l.a. and san diego in 1973. in 2003 they've seen rain, snow, ice and now a passing asteroid this sunday. and this sunday will wind up being the coldest host city weather on record. jim. >> all right, up next at 11:00, how the minneapolis mayor is poking some fun at eagles fans tonight.

the mall of america in minnesota. what a special super bowl trip for nick foles. he thought about retiring a few years ago, and now he is in the super bowl. and this off-season he had his first child, a young daughter. he got emotional and choked up talking about how special she is to him. >> that's the most important thing. when i get to -- you know, when i think about this journey and everything, i get home and i -- i get to see her. i get to see my wife, and i see her and my wife -- and her, like just in her face, her mannerisms, that's what it's about. and there's going to be someday she's going to look and want to see what her daddy does and did. whenever you're tired and doing things the right way, i think about that. because i know she's going to
