"early today" starts right now. good wednesday morning. i'm frances rivera. it was the third longest state of the union address in history. president trump delivering remarks before a joint session of congress. he spoke to the american people as the shadow of the russia investigation looms over his administration. looking to strike strike a conciliatory tone. this despite 13 democratic lawmakers boycotting the president's speech altogether. the congressional black caucus taking to the house floor witha their shoulders in protest of mr. trump's alleged shole comments against haitians and african nations some weeks ago. mr. trump using the occasion to tout the accomplishments of his first year in office. >> the state of our union is strong because our people are strong. >> we have created 2.4 million

new jobs. >> after years and years of wage stagnation, we are finally seeing rising wages. unemployment claims have hit a 45-year low. >> african-american unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded. >> we have eliminated more regulations in our first year than any administration in the history of our country. >> we repealed the core of the disastrous obamacare. the individual mandate is now gone. >> we enacted the biggest tax cuts and reforms in american history. >> the president rattled off his administration's successes before moving on to the story of the 12-year-old boy who sought to put american flags on each and every veteran's grave across the country. adding a veiled swipe at those who choose not to stand for the national anthem.

president trump's state of the union address reacted very positively to the speech according to a snap cnn poll. 29% reacted negatively and 22% said they had a somewhat positive reaction. according to twitter the speech was the most tweeted in history, with 4.5 million tweets during the address. well, the one clear part of the president's address, immigration. mr. trump zeroing in on some of the heinous and violence acts at the hands of undocumented immigrants. infuriated democrats said he was casting immigrants as violent criminals. he laid out are condition forz what he said would be a fair deal. the president highlighted some of the guests seat add longside first lady melania trump as well, grieving family members whose daughters were killed by members of the ms-13 gang as he sought to take a stronger stance on the issues and we're days before the government could face yet shutdown. the immigration fight is sure to be front and center. let's go to nbc's fred lawrence. >> reporter: good morning,

frances. he told them to use the plan he laid out giving a path to citizenship tofor undocumented immigrants brought to this country as children in exchange for boshder wall funding, limiting chain migration and ending the visa lottery program. >> in recent weeks two terrorist attacks in new york were made possible by the visa lottery and chain migration. in the age of terrorism these programs present risks. we can just no longer afford. it is time to reform. >> these outdated immigration rules and finally bring our immigration system into the 21st century. >> democrats could not hold their contempt and growned when the president said chain migration must be limited to children and spouses. they want a deal on immigration

but are in a tough spot. >> democrats, they're in a trap here. i think they don't want to have president trump be the guy who saved the dreamers. and at the same time he's the president and that's who they've got to deal with right now. >> reporter: now, this week republicans have a retreat where they'll talk about how setting their midterm goals, immigration will be part of that but so will how they sell the tax plan to the american people for the midterm elections. frances? >> edward lawrence, thank you. and when it comes to the subject of russia the president made just a passing reference to the country, referring to it as a rival that challenges our interests. but he did make one russia-related headline as he was leaving the house chamber. caught commenting on that politically charged house intel memo about the russia investigation. take a listen to that. >> let's release the memo. >> 100%. >> don't worry, 100% is what the president said to a republican lawmaker when pressed on

releasing that gop memo. the revelation coming as the white house reviews that gop report. set to decide on whether to make it public over the justice department's objections. with the fbi director even paying a personal visit to the white house to lob yit administration to keep the memo secret. nbc's peter alexander has more from washington. >> reporter: the release of that deeply divisive document would be unprecedented, relying on a never before used h aides say the president still hasn't seen the memo but he's expected to green light making it public within days. speaker paul ryan now endorsing the republican effort. >> there may have been malfeasance at the fbi by certain individuals. sunshine is the best disinfectant. >> reporter: democrats argue the memo's misleading, accusing intelligence committee chairman devin nunes of trying to undermine the russia inquiry. >> fundamental problem remains and that is he's a proxy for the white house, you can't run a credible investigation that way. >> reporter: nunes dismissing
