we are just three days away from super bowl lii in minneapolis. just a few moments ago head coach doug pederson stepped to the podium at the mall of america to speak to reporters, let's listen in. >> how did you address that with the players and what do you hope to see these next few days to let you know they're ready? >> couple things from that is number one it's been a couple days since we've been on the practice field so it's typical that you're going to have, you know, not quite as a crisp a practice. but for me it was just about talking to -- just going around and talking to the leadership of the guys. it wasn't no, you know, hey, you know, get team together, get the coaches together and then start, you know, browbeating everybody. we're so late in the season now that we understand how to practice. but just making sure that we understand the importance of, one, that's why did i the break,

you know, was to put us into that situation. now we understand it. so it's a very teachable moment for our guys, our coaches, and how to prepare for, you know, the second half of a football game. >> doug. >> sir. >> doug, what is jason peters meant to the rest of the offensive lineman since he went down with the injury and whenever he does decide to not play anymore, in your opinion, does he have a future in coaching if that's the route he wants go? >> you know, jason, the moment he could get back into the building he was around the offensive line every single day. you know, really like all of our injured guys are. and he's been a mentor obviously to big v. he's coached him up on and out of football field. he's around him now more these past few weeks in practice and obviously out here in the meetings and things like that. but he's just been a great asset to that offensive line as a
11:18 am
group, big leader. obviously that unit. but, you know, i still think he has a few years left to play before he steps away. as far as coaching goes, you know, i don't know. that's something that, you know, i haven't talked to him been it but maybe he -- maybe he wants go down that path. i think he could -- i think he could -- having played the position could be -- could be a good coach, you know, if he chose do that. >> doug, hey, doug, at team meetings what's the story behind finishing them talking about ice cream? >> say that one more -- i didn't hear the first part, i was -- >> at the team meetings what's the story about finishing them talking about ice cream? >> talking about ice cream? >> ice cream. >> i love ice cream. i mean, country tell? can't you tell? no, it's just something i've just kinda came up with just a saying, just a phrase, we do have to serve ice cream at our snack the night before the game
11:19 am
and i love ice cream and i don't want to stay in that team meeting too long because it's over there melting. so i throw it out there ever week. nothing really behind it. >> hey, doug, ice cream aside. >> thank you. >> when you -- when you took over, you kept several coaches from are the chip kelly staff. what was that situation like? did you know these guys at all? did you have to get to know them before you made that decision? how did that all work? >> yeah. well, the only one that i knew was deuce because i had worked with him before and played with him before. the other ones, as i was preparing and putting a staff together and thinking of potential candidates, these guys came highly recommended by other -- by other coaches around the league and so it was -- i was excited to get to philadelphia to talk to these guys, to talk to jeff stoutland
11:20 am
and cory inland just been there about a year and the other guys. wanted to talk to them and see if they could fit into what i was bringing to philadelphia. and, you know, in fipp's case and really in stouten's case, these were two men that came highly recommended to me. >> doug, you said the other day that your role as a player was to be a career backup. i wonder at what point during your career did you accept that role and as a coach how important is it to have players who understand and embrace their roles? >> well, i think after the first couple of seasons you kinda see how your role is going to go in the league. you know, do you want to play? yeah, you want to play and you want to be -- you want to be out there on the field, bus especially at the quarterback position you know there's only going to be one guy. and, you know, in my case i understood i was on, you know, two teams really that and really
11:21 am
the third, but a couple of teams where the starter was already in place and that was dan marino and brett farve and you're not going to beat those two guys out. so and then the third one was philadelphia where i started and donovan was the guy we drafted and took over. so once you -- after a couple years you kind of embrace that role and then you become -- you become the best role player you can. >> we've been listening to head coach doug pederson getting our daily dose of doug pederson addressing reporters out in minnesota ahead of the super bowl on sunday. a moment ago you just heard him talk about his time when he played in the nfl and i suppose his transition into becoming the coach, some of the other coaches he's worked with. we're going to continue to monitor this news conference with reporters out there in mp and bring you new developments throughout the rest of the hour. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, yesterday we only got up to 32 degrees. it's already 41 despite the
11:22 am
clouds coming into philadelphia, and it's above freezing everywhere else across the region despite the clouds that continue to increase ahead of the next weather system. we've got quite a bit of up and down in the temperature department. yesterday 32, today 49, then back down tomorrow and saturday and then back up on sunday. and then going back down again. so we're above freezing even in places that are often cold, like chester, bucks, montgomery counties, 38 in west cal len, west bradford township, saint dafds. collegeville is 37, so is bedminster and new hope. ber thath an, port washington at 39 degrees. a lot of those place dollars are going to get into the 40s today. there are the clouds ahead of the rain, the rain is not all that heavy. it's not a large system.
11:23 am
on the back edge of it we're seeing a little bit of snow and as the colder air comes in, r very late tonight, some of that will change over. so as we go through the afternoon, we've got some places getting into the upper 40s today. then some rain by the afternoon rush in the lehigh valley, berks county, but it's going to take till this evening to cover most of the area. once again, temperatures above freezing all the way up through about 11:00. but later on tonight it's starting to cool down enough in the lehigh valley that we can see a brief changeover to snow. this model just wipes us out as far as the precipitation. it just zooms out of here. other models still keep some by about at least 5:00 a.m. as the fingerprints go down. -- temperatures go down. so that's going to be a close call tomorrow morning to see if the precipitation hangs around
11:24 am
for the temperatures to drop enough to cause any kind of travel issue. but then we've got cold and we've got wind during the day tomorrow. it's just going to be kind of brutal. and tomorrow night very cold. look at the temperatures in the teens by 11:00. by saturday morning we're in the teens as well. saturday afternoon very cold and so it's going to be a very chilly start to the weekend. then sunday, since we're starting off chilly where are we could start off with a little bit of snow. again, north and west and then warmer air starts coming up. so this is mostly rain that we're going to be getting. here we are during the super bowl and almost the entire area is covered with rain. little bit of a mix up to the north and even up there they could go over to rain toward the end of the ball game. and then by monday morning when it gets cold again, it is over. but look at these feels like temperatures. friday night and into saturday

11:49 am
tell us what parents can expect with this event. >> tomorrow will be the six teeth year that give kids a smile will be happening throughout the country. we are going to be at in burlington, but there will be events throughout the city in philadelphia as well as new jersey. and what we will be doing is giving exams and cleanings, x-rays, and i'll be there to do some restorative work and dental work along with some colleagues that will be there also. >> why do you think sometimes children's dental care is overlooked? is it because it's preventative and so sometimes it's hard for parents to stay on top of? >> well, it's a costly thing. dentistry is expensive as with most things. but it's getting the children to the facility, having time to see them and examinations and restorative work. so it's just sometimes it's on the back burner.
11:50 am
>> that's right. as you said, not cheap, which say good reason why the event tomorrow is free. our favorite word here at nbc 10. dr. howard, thank you so much for coming in. really appreciate it that information prepreventative dental care will be offered to kids 10 and under in black wood from 9:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon. for more information tap the nbc 10 app and look for find it on 10. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> now the clouds have moved in and eventually rain will be moving in. obviously rain because the temperatures are really climbing now into the 40s. our high yesterday was only 32. and it's above freezing even in the lehigh valley and so it would start at least as rain. you could see some of the raindrops in the pittsburgh area and southwestern pennsylvania going back into ohio. it's not a very large or heavy,
11:51 am
but it looks more like a front. and it will act more like a front coming down from the northwest with colder air behind it. so this afternoon little bit of that rain moves into lehigh valley, berks county. little bit more by late in the rush hour. and then during the evening it will be spreading across the rest of the area. at the same time, colder air's coming down from the north and west and we could end up with a quick change from rain to snow in the middle of the night or toward the beginning of the morning rush with falling temperatures. and if the snow burst is heavy enough, that could create slippery conditions on roads. so stay tuned for the latest computer models on this because it's kind of a tricky situation here. it's not going to last very long, you can see how fast that snow moves out tomorrow morning.
11:52 am
so the areas that are getting it first, the lehigh valley, berks county, it will end first there. so they may be better off than other parts of the area, philly and south jersey. so saturday is dry and then here comes sunday wherewe're warming up again. saturday is very cold but we're warming up enough for rain from philly southward. we could start as snow in lehigh valley and accumulate a couple inch, but even there it may change over to rain during the late afternoon and by the time we're playing the game, it's rain. it's wet everywhere across the area. so it's a soggy, super sunday. and then by monday morning, it's already moving out. so the forecast for the weekend, it's cold. friday and saturday especially saturday morning it will feel like it's close to 0 in some spots. sunday, not as cold, but we've got the rain in philadelphia,
11:53 am
we've got snow and accumulating snow in the lehigh valley. and a mixture of the pa suburbs, rain in the jersey shore and delaware. that's why we do neighborhood weather. and we'll update throughout the day. we'll be right back.
