tv   Meet the Press  NBC  February 5, 2018 2:45am-3:31am EST

2:45 am
>> the busiest places the street sweepers and trash collectors. did you get the sense from them they're feeling the win? >> yeah. nobody is upset out here. everybody is happy. they're trying to figure out logistically how they can get around and do their jobs. everybody is in such a good mood. they want to make sure they can clean it up and get to work in the morning if anybody manages to get some sleep. >> and we have heard that there was a lot of glass out there. police have been urging people not to bring glass out there. are you seeing a lot of glass? or all kinds of stuff out on the streets? >> a lot of crumpled cans.
2:46 am
it breaks into little bits. they clean it up as quickly as possible. we've seen quite a shift over the city. a little after 10:00, the game ended, everybody flooded out. thousands and thousands. at one point people were shoulder to shoulder like sardines. it was difficult to move. now it is 2:45 on a monday morning. there was a time that was a
2:47 am
cut-off time. they started clearing them out. from north philly and center city which was the meeting point is being like it was going to center city around city hall was the big ground zero for the celebratory activities. this is historic. for a lot of people, this is still sinking in. it is our time, it is our turn. it finally happened for the city to bring home a super bowl championship. >> nbc 10 is the official station for the winning super bowl eagles. we've got crews here and in minneapolis. >> we have such a great coaching staff.
2:48 am
we've dreamed about this moment. there are plenty of kids dreaming about this. to be here with my daughter, my wife, my family, my teammates, the city. i've never seen this in all my
2:49 am
life. with all the adversity and injuries and losing our franchise quarterback and the world champs. an incredible group of men. this is an amazing feeling. >> we've got the best players in the world. it is a resilient group. i love the coaching staff. looking around.
2:50 am
it's just unreal. the city is always about the eagles. we did it, man. we did it. we brought it home. are. >> it is going to come down to one stop. we're trying our best. we knew with the game on the lien. it was written for us. to get the one that we needed for defense. >> i can't wait to go back. this will be a celebration like no other. >> the declaration of independence. >> oh, yeah. we're world champions. >> it's special. this is special for our family, for our team. you have to give all the glory to god, man.
2:51 am
>> they're like yeah, we knew you could do it. stop crying about it. now you have to live with it. get ready for broad street, baby. the best home record in the nfl for a reason. that's the main reason we're here. i can't thank you enough. >> i finally just found my parents amidst the chaos. >> is this the first of many? i want to be here. i want to work every year toward the same goal. you have to sacrifice.
2:52 am
everything you got. thank you. >> thank you. >> let's talk about mvp nick foles as well who faced so much adversity who left the eagles and then would quit the game all together. carson wentz and then bringing home the super bowl trophy. a lot of folks weren't sure. they backed carson wentz. to back him, believe in him. to have your starting quarterback go down like that. a lot of people thought oh, my goodness. this is not it. >> that's why he's referred to as st. nick. >> the fans are still going crazy. we have seen from the beginning. the crush of fans coming out. now we have seen the fans coming out. we want to go back to him.
2:53 am
we're going to stand by and he's not quite ready for us. i can tell that you fans are having a tough time going to sleep because this has been a long time coming. 57 years he's been saying since philly won any championship. it was not called the super bowl back then. >> and fans would say this is the longest two weeks, the longest day, waiting for the super bowl. great for the city, great for the fans. let's go back out live to drew smith live in center city. there was some damage we saw earlier today. >> reporter: yeah. if you're a hotel guest at the ritz carlton, you're going to be up tonight because they have to clean up this awning out front. some people are on top. i believe he got some video of
2:54 am
what was going on. a lot of people were trying to climb on to things. they got some big awning. when there are many people on the structure. you can't get into this part of the ritz carlton hotel. trying to get that down. it got pretty crumpled. they got the street sweepers out here. it is going pretty quickly. you can see the road, it is starting to get a little clearer. >> we talked about the awning there. we have sustain video. they came crashing down and pretty scary to see that.
2:55 am
>> it looks like at least a dozen people on that awning. it collapsed below their seats. >> when you look at the damage, it's metal. you can see they're trying to saw it apart. it is not a structure that's meant to hold people. there's some damage. they're looking at it. >> wow! what a night. >> they've waited so long. it really has come true. the philadelphia eagles are now the super bowl champions. they were perceived as the underdogs. they had what it takes to be number one and to bring the lombardi trophy home to philadelphia. >> they're here. >> and speaking of the trophy, we want to show you the whole
2:56 am
trophy presentation. this is one you're going to want to savor. take a look. >> what a football game! congratulations on your first championship and bringing them to vince lombardi trophy to the city of philadelphia! >> what an amaze go turn-around for your organization and your fans. congratulations and enjoy your first lombardi trophy in philadelphia. >> what does this moment mean to the city of philadelphia? >> if there's a word called everything, that's what it means fans every where.
2:57 am
for eagles fans everywhere, this is for them. >> how would you describe the character of this football team? >> it is the most unique group of get men. i've never seen anything like it in all my years of life that come get with all the injuries. you're world champs. the coaches, beyond great. do you go, unbelievable job and his entire staff. let's bring in coach pederson. >> i would like the dedicate this to all eagles fans around the world and this one especially for my sxhom my dad. it means the world to me. >> thank you. coach, come on in. what was going through your mind
2:58 am
with that last pass? >> i was hoping it was complete. i wanted to see it go 00. >> how do you explain that nine years ago you were coaching in high school and now you're here with this trophy. >> i can only give the praise to my lord and savior jesus christ. i have the best players in the world. i love this coaching staff. the owner. not only do we have the best fans in the world west now have the best team. >> describe your play calling with nick foles. >> well, we just wanted to stay aggressive. the patriots did a great job trying to nullify some of that. my mentality coming into the game, i'll stay aggressive with nick and let him use his play makers to make plays.
2:59 am
>> let's bring in the game winning touchdown. what was that feeling? leak you're in that huddle and you know the play is being called. what are you thinking? >> i'd better score. first and for most, we wouldn't be here without this team. we love to practice. and i think that's the foundation of the team. >> when they were replaying the touchdown. any doubt in your mind? no. i don't know what would have happened in the city of philadelphia. i'm so glad they didn't overturn it. world champions! >> congratulations. let's bring in your mvp. nick foles. just another game, right? >> just another game. unbelievable. all glory to god.
3:00 am
she likes this night. no idea. >> it didn't seem like the nerves, the pressure, bothered you? >> i felt calm.
3:01 am
nick foles and the birds take down the greatest of all time. celebrating the very first super bowl victory. >> eagles fans everywhere, this is for you! happy super bowl monday. we are the winner. >> it is amazing, amazing morning. what an incredible night, incredible game. impossible to turn away from. >> you were up all night, as was everybody in philadelphia. we are getting the first look at
3:02 am
the paper. at last eagles finally win the super bowl. >> looking great. one for the ages with this picture as you can see right there, nick foles holding up the lombardi trophy. all that confetti, the excitement inside the stadium. >> we have been waiting and waiting for that trophy to be here in philadelphia. you and i are both from here. >> it was their second world series win but this is the first for the eagles. there's the daily news. won for the ages. >> i have to tell you, this is a cinderella type story. who would have thought the backup quarterback back in philadelphia that he is now the
3:03 am
mvp of the super bowl? we're getting a tweet from the president. congratulations to the philadelphia eagles on a great super bowl victory! >> what awe victory it is. let's go live to nbc 10's drew smith in center city with the latest. drew, you have been there for hours. >> reporter: philly fans celebrating responsibly. we are on market street near city hall. this sign was toppled, picked up and moved. you can see the amount of litter and trash in the street right now. i want to show you some damage to the macy's building here. you can see the entire glass panel there has been smashed out. they had some workers here already who have brought in some boards to board it up.
3:04 am
you can see the displays out of their places and also another window that was smashed. this was market street and penn square. a large police presence right now. only a few people out there walking. obviously some fans took it too far and there has been some damage to this part of the city. right in the heart of the city, unfortunately. we have been out. there's been thousands and thousands of fans in the street. most people were behaving themselves. unfortunately, some damage to clean up. >> a few fans getting a little too wild during the celebrations. any injuries you're hearing about, drew, either to people having a good time celebrating or to police who have been monitoring this?
3:05 am
>> yeah. i don't think there's been widespread injuries. ems has been busy on a couple different calls. somebody needed medical attention not too long ago. a couple fights we witnessed. nothing major or widespread. we were showing you 15 minutes ago the people taken to the hospital from a fall. the newspaper boxes, the windows obviously we don't know what did that. >> drew, thank you so much for your reporting tonight. >> we want to show you some video of some of the celebrations earlier, some of the more under control celebrations. >> calm. well, i don't know about calm, but good behavior.
3:06 am
>> not destructive behavior. this is in center city as well. and you can see broad street just flooded with a flock of people. no pun intended. or pun intended. trying to capture this moment for the city of philadelphia. it transcends all backgrounds, all people. this is something everyone everywhere was watching. what was incredible about this coverage, a hammonton of people were converging on city hall. there was a city wide celebration. >> we had video from sky 4. william penn in the foreground. eagles flags out there.
3:07 am
the green lights. we have been waiting for this for decades. and it is finally here. it has finally happened. this team, this underdog team that so many people maybe outside the philadelphia region, pennsylvania, new jersey, delaware, doubt it. >> certainly football fans in other parts of the country. but even some of the sports analysts outside philadelphia. >> yes. >> some of the pro experts continued to doubt the eagles until last night's game. >> you see the fireworks going off up above that ground. even before the nfc championship game some of the local papers said eagles were going to fall to the vikings. and they did not. >> this is what we showed you a
3:08 am
few moments ago at the height of the celebration. trash trucks are out for two reasons. one, they're blocking, keeping crowds corraled. and there will be some cleanup as you saw drew a few minutes ago. there is certainly a bit of cleanup to do in this day ahead. >> you know, what we've been hearing for much of this season and especially tonight, this was a team effort the team came together and pulled this off and let's hear from some of those players now. >> jeff, what's this moment mean for the city of philadelphia? >> if there's a word called everything, that's what it means to eagles fans everywhere.
3:09 am
everywhere. for eagles fans everywhere, this is for them. >> how would you describe the character of this football team? >> it's the most unique, together group of men. i've told them i have never seen an incredible group of men all my years of life that come together with all the adversity, losing our franchise quarterback and you're world champs. incredible group of men. >> it felt good. you never know what it's like going to the super bowl. i've never been here before. you have normal nerves, butterflies. it's a big game. i felt good. i felt calm. the big thing that happened me is i have amazing teammates, amazing coaches around me. all i had to do was play as hard as i could, play for one another, those guys, and not look at the scoreboard, not look at the time. just go out and play and don't worry about it.
3:10 am
and, you know, came away with a victory. >> this is going to be a shoot-out. this was going to come down to one stop. we knew the story line was written to come out here and get the one stop we needed as a defense. i can't wait to get back to philly. this is going to be a celebration like no more. >> decolllaration of independen step aside. >> that's right. >> nbc 10 has a testimony of reporters and anchors in minneapolis, not to mention a former eagles player. >> you guys are still awake. i'm assuming you did not sleep at all. what a night not to get any sleep. hi, guys. >> how could we sleep? we're so excited. this is history. >> i'd be careful throwing that
3:11 am
word "normal" around now, tedd. we got to the stadium and it started just as we arrived. >> let's tell you what happened. so we get to the stadium. it was like we were at a home game at the link. we were walking all around, it was eagles, green everywhere. chants everywhere. everybody is coming up to vi taking selfies. by far the green jerseys outnumber outnumbered 10 to 1 at least. at least. >> we heard boos. we stepped out to see what was happening. patriots players trodded out in groups to warm up. as they came out of the tunnel, the boos. then suddenly cheers were erupting. and eagles were emerging from
3:12 am
their tunnel. it was literally like we were at lincoln financial field. it was a home game, to be sure, for the philadelphia eagles. >> we watched the game. and you always predicted -- you were very confident you would win. we were very intense watching it. what happened is we get taken down to the tunnel to get ready to go onto the field in the fourth quarter. we're packed tightly against the other side of the rope the wives and girlfriends of the players. and we're all trying to watch. it is down to the last two minutes. we are all trying to watch the teeny little monitors. we are being moved. people are saying you need to move back. we were like, whoa, whoa, whoa, we have to see this. >> the justin timberlake set was coming through. they were asking people to move aside to push the huge rollers with the set on it. so we had to get out of the way.
3:13 am
but we were standing out there with the women, the moms, the dads, the wives, and the girlfriends we weren't quite sure what happened. an interception or if the ball had been slapped down. the moment that that ended, everyone looked around. is this thing over? is it of? i think the players felt the same way. they weren't quite sure immediately. >> yeah. in the tunnel, it just erupted. we're not allowed on the field. even the wives and the girlfriends. and my favorite girlfriend of jake elliott, annie was so excited. it's been a long time since i've seen that much pure joy on someone's face. it was just amazing. we walked in. it was just like you see on tv. but to be there and have the
3:14 am
confetti raining down and everyone just running to hug their players, their loved ones. >> an amazing night. >> that moment, watching it here on the home. jaw dropped. stunned. didn't happen. it was incredible. >> we were all going, it's over. we have won the championship. we have won the super bowl. it's over. i've got to tell you, guys, i'm wearing randall cunningham's jersey. this morning i was wearing reggie white's as a homage to my teammates. westbrook, i chatted with him a little bit on the field. i almost feel this emotional connection to our former team. some of us played with other teams. we lived in other cities. we had our families travel with us and played with other nfl
3:15 am
squads. but by and large our connection is really with this team. and really it's because of the fans. it's because of our connection, the way that philadelphia responds to us, the way they have taken us in as part of their homes and families. i always see it whenever i go to the stadiums, people reach out and remember them even though i played 25 years ago. >> they sure do. i don't know how many pictures you took today. >> it feels like me and many of my former teammates, we helped build this. block by block, brick by brick, we helped make this connection. it had just come off the podium and the trophy presentation. and i asked him, i said, jeffrey, it's been a long time. you bought the team in 1994. did you think it was going to take this long? >> he said actually i didn't know it was going to take this long. i was a new owner. all of this is new to me. but he said it sure feels good,
3:16 am
doesn't it? we brought the championship home to philadelphia. he hugged me and thanked me in my ear for being part of the organization. we played for a year, six games, two games or ten years. we all feel this deep personal connection to this team. we are so happy for the current players. >> this is a special team. we have been saying it all year. there were all the naysayers. when you talked to coach be pederson, you were saying how do you feel about the naysayers. people didn't think you could do it. >> he said we just did our thing. and he kept saying i trusted nick foles. i trusted my team. i trust my coaches on. i trust the front office. this team is special because you heard that from players too saying we trust one another, we
3:17 am
love one another, we're a team together. >> that's a change from a couple years ago when chip kelly was here and created so much angst. he relegated how he rose to an office outside team headquarters. and all that has changed. because doug has come in. he worked under andy reed. andy as a coach was a great manager of people. he connected people. he didn't shun people. and i think the owner, jeffrey lure, in reaching out to doug peders pederson, in a way he wanted to get back to that kind of management where people are rell gated to a back office. i'm telling you, boy, there's a lot of people who didn't think that doug pederson would lead them to a championship, certainly not in year two. but here we are. >> let's talk about the mvp.
3:18 am
quiche pederson said i'm so happy for nick. he did so well. he's been through so much. i'm so happy for him. >> a couple of years ago, he was ready to retire. he played a number of years, drafted to this team. he was let go. chip kelly went to the rams. didn't play especially well there. he thought he would give it up. he got cut from the rams. kansas city picked him up. he spent time with andy reed's squad, doug pederson. boy, you wonder, what a great pickup that was. who knew their franchise quarterback was going to get hurt december 10th in l.a. nick foles accorded himself especially well tonight. you know what, even is wondering is nick going to be back? is he going to try to find another team to play on?
3:19 am
>> yeah, right. it was so great to watch him. we were all on the edge of our seats saying look at the time. oh, my gosh, look at the score. he said i wasn't looking at the time. i wasn't looking at the score. i was just going to go in and rip it. >> he said after the game, just another game. >> right. and they made it happen. >> live at the mall of america. we appreciate it. we'll check back with you a little bit later. it is interesting they talk about that united front on the team. such a cop draft to the way the season started out. not just the team but the entire league. you have a team that is united, that is a true unit. and they came home with the win. >> they stuck together. they were determined and made it happen. and we are so proud and so happy. let's check in with nbc 10's
3:20 am
aaron baskerville. hey, aaron. >> reporter: hey, how are you doing? we have been showing you some of the folks celebrating and dancing and just obviously having a great time with this historic night. obviously with the good comes a little bit of the bad. we're at 16th and chestnut. this is the old navy. you can see windows are smashed out here. just a couple of bad actors here. some of the flower pots they knocked of. stay with me for a second. you can see more flower pots that are knocked over down here and some of the garbage cans and things like that. people got out of control and
3:21 am
did some of this stuff here. this is the 1600 block of chestnut. we're trying to go over here to the rite aid. some people actually broke into the rite aid. let's see what we can see right here. obviously they went in here and raised it. you can see some of the damage to the bottom corner. apparently folks got in here at one point and did some damage. check on out the light post down here on the ground as well. we will try and walk across the street. you can see they knocked down the 17th street light post over here. there's a wire down here too. we're just getting here. we can see the damage and stuff. we'll spin around one more time. i just noticed all the lamp posts are down here. you can see one over there.
3:22 am
of here, trevor, you see that one over here. it has the streetlights down there. that one is knocked over. obviously cops are here too. unfortunately this is what happened out here when people get out of control. unfortunately don't represent the city like the majority of folks did tonight who are celebrating in center city and having a good time and just want to be part of history. these folks are taking it too far. we counted four light posts down over there. once again, here are some of the bushes and flower pots that they knocked over. but the main damage here that we have seen is this old navy. we do not know -- at least we vice president heard any reports yet if anybody went inside the old navy and took anything, took any clothing or anything like that. but once again, that's --
3:23 am
there's spray paint here. i guess that was from tonight. if i can make it out, it does say eagles here. so somebody took it too far on chestnut. unfortunately, they're going to have a lot of cleaning up to do. but like i said, this is just an awful sight to see. you don't want to see this. this is old navy here on chestnut. you can see the smashed glass. we don't know if anybody has stolen anything. this is just one of the things that you hate to see. for the majority of the night, folks are enjoying themselves. most of the folks out here are doing the right thing. but there are a few people who take it too far. they got a little bit rowdy. this is what happens. they smash businesses down. they smashed into the old navy here. over here some of the flower
3:24 am
pots are destroyed as well. so far this looks to be the main drag of any damage that we have seen. this is in between 16th and 17th on chestnut. and there is a police presence here. this is the majority of the damage. you can see spray paint. it says eagles on it. we can count the flower pots that have been knocked over and ruined. there's at least four light poles down. rite aid has damage. old navy has damage. this is something we hate to see. like i said, most of the folks were doing the right thing and enjoying, you know, the celebration and having a good time and bringing their families out here and their kids and wanting to be a part of history. and this happens. >> it is a shame to see that, aaron. thank you. and really not that far from where drew is by city hall, a couple blocks where we saw some other damage, other smashed window and a traffic light knocked down there right in that same area.
3:25 am
>> yeah. 13th and market streets, drew. aaron is at 16th and 17th, chestnut. philadelphia police were prepared for this. they wanted to make sure people at the most stay safe, making sure there were no encounters between the police and the public, making sure everything stayed smooth on that end. as we look toward the parade we know will be coming this week, this will factor into that, making sure people aren't destructive. businesses should be benefiting from the super bowl win. we don't want to see this out of control behavior. >> there are going to be so many people in town for that parade, you definitely think they are going to benefit. people from all over the region, all three states because this is just so big. i know we are looking forward to that parade and the joyous atmosphere that comes with it. >> the good thing is the parade
3:26 am
will certainly be during the daylight hours, not during the eveni evening. >> perhaps less drinking than what preceded in the parade. >> we are up near temple university campus. looking a little quieter at this hour, miguel. >> reporter: that's right. definitely a little quieter. >> hey! a little bit of excitement with a few people still out here. we didn't see as much damage in this area as we were hearing about over in center city. i did hear from some of the students that didn't streets around temple's campus had a little bit of damage. a bonfire or two. but at least in this area on broad street not too much. a big reason is there was such a big police presence earlier. there were police on bikes and
3:27 am
standing around. obviously in the street. they were working to keep a rowdy, happy, and excited crowd a little bit contained. some of the issues police did run into, if you look over there, some people were climbing on the roof of that bus. police had to get them down. people were trying to climb poles and everything. police were pretty quick about getting eagles fans on the ground. people like to climb things when they're excited. it has definitely calmed down quite a bit. the only people out here that i am seeing are people either on their way home or just coming out to start their day. it is 3:30 now. i'm surprised that the this
3:28 am
morning i saw people lining up outside a bar. around noon is when people started celebrating. for them to make it until noon to 2:00, 3:00 a.m. is definitely a feat. that is just how excited they were about that win. they were celebrating the eagles's victory. it was very emotional. even one guy i was talking to an hour ago, he said he went down to center city with his friends, came here. i kept seeing people hug each other, some people crying. he said i've been in tears all night. he couldn't stop crying because he was so excited. it was app emotional night. it has toned down, calm downing and get some rest until the parade and celebrate the victory with the rest of the city. of i'll send it back to you
3:29 am
guys. >> folks wearing their hearts on their sleeve as we celebrate this historic moment from philadelphia. >> brought a tear to my eye. >> are you sure it was not because it was so early in the morning? the next question for miguel, he's near the campus of temple university, is how many students are going to class this morning. >> that's what i was wondering. he had been talking to some students getting texts and e-mails from professors who told them, nah, don't worry about it. >> stay in. >> exactly. >> it's an excused absence today. of course our attention has been focused on the eagles, the super bowl. we are looking toward the olympics coming up. keith jones in pyeongchang. we know there are philadelphia, pennsylvania area athletes wanting to see this eagles win.
3:30 am
>> and he caught up with some of them. >> there was a celebration halfway around the world in pyeongchang. kickoff at 8:30 in the morning. that did not stop birds fans and local olympians from celebrating. >> whoo! >> bobsledder jamie posed the team u.s. bobsled in skeleton. she predicted this ten months ago. >> i'm crying, obviously. nick foles beat tom brady. >> alexa is a senior and intern for nbc sports. >> eagles are super bowl champions finally. >> eagles! >> my dad has been a life long eagles fan. i wanted him to see one.
