pyeongchang, south korea. >> hey, everybody. thank you for joining us. it is 7:00 a.m., on a tuesday morning. 9:00 at night here at pyeongchang. you are looking at not only our awesome you, but terrific olympic athletes on the plaza. >> we have great members of team usa. there's one member of team usa, that everybody is talking about. you want to hold your sign up? >> her dad give me this one. >> i got it. >> it's chloe. she was amazing. and just moments ago, she got her gold medal. and look at her face, when they play our national anthem. an you can see it sipg sinking . this is a young woman with a heart of gold. >> she is on a ride from the

mountains. she is coming here. it takes a little bit to get here. we're waiting patiently for her. she was in the car and she had a message for savannah and myself. >> i'm in the car right now, on my way to you guys. i'm excited to see you both. let's have some fun. >> we cannot wait to see her and congratulate her in person. daunt whe down where we are, compared to the mountains, where there is snowboarding and skiing. >> today, that's what we're talking about. we're talking about snowboarding. chloe cemented her place in these games. she is 17 years old. she's the youngest woman to win an olympic snowboarding medal.

>> reporter: chloe kim. surprising even herself. >> on her second run of three. >> reporter: after dropping into the pipe for her second attempt, the 17-year-old stumbled, but that did not stop her. her win becoming inevitable, after others faltered. >> slides out. >> reporter: still, all of the pressure didn't seem to phase kim, the california native taking time to sweet during the competition. writing, wish i had finished my breakfast sandwich and now i'm getting hangry. kim, her final run for glory, soaring into the air and bringing home the gold medal. >> chloe kim reigns supreme in south korea. >> i worked so hard to get to this point. coming here and being able to land was my main goal.

i'm happy i was able to do it. >> reporter: standing on top of e teammate, arielle gold takes gold. kim said, i hate crying, but i give myself a pass for this one. stoked to bring home the gold. >> oh, my lord, this is qualifying. >> reporter: for the men, shaun white, at his fourth olympic games, considered to be the elder statesman of snowboarding, looking to be king of the hill in halfpipe. >> shaun white has taken the lead in qualifying. >> reporter: edging scotty james out of the top spot, for what is shaping up to be an epic final happening today. a two-time gold medalist, who finished a disappointing fourth in sochi, white is looking to

bring home more gold, using the toughest tricks in halfpipe. people forget, you made it to the olympics. but i have to qualify. >> reporter: from snowboarders catching air, to high wind gusts, nearly blowing skiers off of the mountain. olympic organizers were forced to move the races down the mountain and move the gates to allow the skiers to take a safer line. >> the wind was affecting things on that side of things. >> reporter: going back to chloe kim for a minute, her gold is the 99th in olympics history. shaun white could perhaps get number 100. here's where the medal count

she said, no, i'm still hungry. she had the gold locked up and threw down as good a run as you'll ever see. >> cherry on top. >> shaun white is crushing it in the prelims. what do you expect to happen? >> gold in 2006. gold in 2010. off the podium in 2014. he came to our studio before. he is in a great place. he had a run that qualified for the finals and he wanted to do better. >> i was watching this live. it's a qualifying round and all these guys are trying to one-up and outtrick one another. >> it's like a competition broke out. a lot of these guys are inspired by shaun white. he set a bar for them, he's an industry. >> everyone is waiting for the pairs in figure skating to get

presence in pyeongchang, even though their country was banned from the games, after a widespread doping scandal. kate snow has that part of the story. >> reporter: good morning. i'm standing where russian fans come to gather. it's not the russian team. it's o.a.r., olympic athletes from russia. the olympic committee back in 2017 suspended the russians from these games. they did allow for 168 athletes who passed their drug tests to come here and compete. here at the winter games, where national pride is always on display -- russian athletes have been asked to tone it down. friday's ceremony, a stark contrast to four years ago, when russia hosted the last olympics in sochi. >> no one had more to celebrate

than russia. they cleaned up at home. >> reporter: back then, the home team winning more medals than any other country. here, in pyeongchang when athletes one from russia, the olympic flag was raised. only fans can raise the russian flag, not athletes. today, a married russian couple won bronze in curling. afterwards, they chose their words very carefully. their coach refusing to translate some of my questions, because they're answer could violate olympic committee rules. they said of the people, they were for us and they felt it. the first russian to win a medal in speed skating went further. he said, i dedicate this medal to all of the guys that have

been excluded. >> russia has been banned from the winter olympics in korea. >> reporter: on sunday, the russian foreign minister insists that the russians were kept out of the game so meamericas could win more medals. weeks ago, vladimir putin acknowledged there were evidences of doping. >> this was a system of cheating. that cannot be stressed enough, that the evidence focuses not just on individuals, but wather a power structure. >> reporter: while athletes are trying not to ruffle feathers here, they do have a place that feels like home. there are gathering spots. this one is called the sports house. inside, it's all about russia and its champions. here at the sports house, the party is continuing.

there's a band playing inside. on a more serious note, they are taking doping seriously at these olympics and drug testing. they've tested a thousand athletes here. and a case of alleged doping led to a japanese speed skater being suspended from the games. >> thank you so much. so much to get to. fresh fallout for the trump administration, with the scandals involving two former staffers. let's get to peter alexander live at the white house for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the typically outspoken president is leaving it to others on his staff to express his support for the victims of domestic abuse. and we're hearing from rob porters first wife, colbie holderness. talking to sarah sanders, saying whether the president believes

the accusers. one week later, the white house defending the president's failure who would not acknowledge the wife of one of his aides of domestic abuse. sarah sanders rebutting criticism that her bass hoss ha to say the message himself. >> he relayed it to me, and i relay it to you. >> reporter: his comments lying with porter, not his ex-wives. >> we wish him well. >> reporter: porter's first wife, colbie holderness, with an op-ed in "the post." she writes, i never could have imagined myself in the situation i am in now. we did not seek to tell our

story. others sought us out. porter denies the allegations, so does david sorensen, who was ousted last week, after he reco recordedly abused his ex-wife. >> he put a cigarette out in my mind. made me drive around wondering where i would go, with no money, to beg people for cash. >> reporter: she only spoke up after an fbi agent approached her last fall. >> i was not trying to get him. i was not trying to get him denied this job by telling the truth. i think he's one of the most capable people at what he does professionally. >> reporter: with questions about top aides handling classified information without security clearance. 30 to 40 officials are operating

without permanent security clearance. meanwhile, a scare for the first family. donald trump jr.'s wife, vanessa, was hospitalized as a precaution, after opening a letter at their apartment with a powder inside, which officials said appeared to be cornstarch. trump jr. writing, disturbing behavior. back here, the president and first lady will host a reception marking african-american history month. on the hill, the top officials will testify before the intelligence committee, the same committee investigating russia and the trump campaign. savannah and hoda? >> peter alexander with the headlines out of the white house. how about a check of the weather? mr. roker may be back there

this is a look at the traditional clothing. we're going to go way back in time to show you some of the traditional clothing that people in south korea would have worn. these clothes are really zen. the colors, the way they merge together, and the straight this years ago, koreans would have worn. it's flowing and there's ease of movement. but at the same time, these colors show you're upscale. that shows you're posh. and john has a dragon an his clothing, which would suggest he is a member of the aristocracy or a royal. this is a special display of south korean culture for us. one thing i should mention, there's no space for your cell
