many people were shot and how seriously they were hurt. you can see quite a very active scene at this hour. we do know police have not made any arrests. we'll bring you any new details as they become available. all right, now to our top story, right now at 5:00, love returns to philadelphia, just in time for valentine's day. the city's iconic statue made its journey home to love park today after a two-year hiatus. here's a live look at the park from one of our cameras at the comcast center. people were eager to get outside on this kind of sunny day out there, take pictures in front of this popular tourist attraction. it is back. thanks for joining us. i'm jim rosenfield. >> and i'm erin coleman. for many couples, the love statue has been the site for first kisses, first dates, and even marriage proposals. now live from love park, more on the monument's comeback. miguel? >> reporter: yeah, it was a triumphant return. you can see the love statue behind me there back at love park. and all day there's been people coming up and down here, greeting the statue and taking

47 in lehigh valley. 51 in south jersey. 46 along the jersey shore. and 53 in delaware. i call ate sweetheart forecast with a mix of sun and clouds. it's what comes after this that is going to be really crazy. warmth, rain, and i'm going to use the s-word when i come back in just a little bit. guys? >> all right. we'll see you then. happening now at 5:00, a fight for a fair workweek. >> any minute now, restaurant and service industry employees plan to start a march to city hall. it's to protest the inconsistent schedules they say are impacting their ability to make ends meet. nbc 10's cydney long is live with those protesters in center city. >> cydney, their message is less about fair wage, more about a fair schedule. >> reporter: erin and jim, that's right. and right now in the heart of rush hour right here along market street before city hall, we're waiting for about 100 to 200 low-wage income earners to march on behalf of 130,000 low-wage workers in the city of philadelphia. they plan to take this fight right here to city hall in hopes

that counsel members are listening. they say in the city of brotherly love, they aren't feeling the love when it comes to a fair work schedule. >> it is very hard. very, very hard. >> reporter: natori price fought back tears right before her shift at this center city target. she's 19 and supporting a family of seven. >> it's a lot sometimes. i get so stressed, i just feel like i can't do it. >> reporter: her mom is disabled with diabetes and heart problems. >> all of my brothers and sisters are younger than i am. so i'm really the only one able to come out here and make money and be able to provide for them. >> reporter: prices among 130,000 low-wage earners are today marching for fair workweeks. they say it's about equality, dignity, and respect in the workplace with regard to scheduling. one pennsylvania organized the rally after collecting data about workers' schedules. >> one of the places that wave seen do this the most is

mcdonald's. you get your schedule on saturday for sunday through the next saturday. and that doesn't allow you to actually find someone to take care of your children. >> reporter: they say no one company is single-handedly to blame. they're calling on city leaders to enact fair workweek legislation, which would require two weeks' notice for workers to know their schedules and consistent shifts. something other cities like new york, seattle, and san francisco have accomplished. >> i know when i'm going to work, how much i'm expected to get paid. >> reporter: and knowing your schedule is key to knowing what winds up in your pocket on payday. >> if i have 36 hours this week and i have the expectation of working 36 hours next week and i actually get put on the schedule for 12 or i come to work and you send me back home, i have to pay for the transportation to get there. >> i hope that they don't just hear me, but they hear all of us. >> reporter: now, you can see the police here at the corner of market and 13th. right here in center city again, rush hour. we can hear the protesters, the marchers, but we don't see them

just yet. there is currently no fair workweek legislation in the city of philadelphia or in pennsylvania. i did also speak to a labor attorney today by phone, who tells me that this fight, the one that they are fighting for this afternoon, is absolutely necessary and one that is long overdue. we'll bring you more of their message just as soon as they get here. we're live in center city tonight, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. from help with heating bills to groceries, major federal assistance programs are now on the chopping block with president trump's budget proposal. nbc 10's lauren mayk is live in our breaking news center now with more on the big winners and losers from his plan. lauren? >> jim, the budget calls for big changes to health care, for example, again, pushing to repeal and replace obamacare. but when it comes to spending, the department of defense is the big winner, proposing a 13% boost. some of the defense spending would go to additional aircraft and naval ships. also, getting more money in this plan, efforts to combat the opioid crisis. and there is more money for

additional border patrol agents. now let's take a look at what's getting less money, where the administration is proposing savings. the budget calls for making medicaid into block grants for the states. it eliminates the lieheap program which helps low-income people to pay electricity bills, and it makes big changes to the food stamps program called snap. right now you can spend your local snap benefits at your grocery store. this plan calls for taking half those benefits and replacing them with a packaged box of food. an administration official likened it to the blue apron meal kit delivery service, but this would not include fresh produce or other foods that could quickly spoil. coming up at 6:00, i'll show you what is inside boxes used as a model for this program and why some worry if this happens, food could actually go to waste. erin? >> lauren mayk reporting for us in the breaking news center. all right, following more breaking news, sky force 10 over this scene in olney.

two people have been shot. this is the 200 block of furly street. you can see the police tape right there. we're told those people were rushed to the hospital. no arrests so far. we're going to stay on top of this and keep you updated. police seized nearly $3 million worth of illegal drugs during a weekend raid on a house in feltonville. today, attorney general josh shapiro said there were enough drugs inside a house on north fourth street to create a quarter of a million doses of heroin and fentanyl. two men inside that house were arrested sunday night. shapiro says the men mixed the fentanyl into the heroin, making it stronger and more deadly. >> philly has the highest number of overdose deaths of any big city in the united states of america. that's why this seizure, that's why this operation was so significant. >> now, during the raid, philadelphia police also found guns and about $7,000 in cash. pennsylvania republicans are threatening a federal lawsuit

after governor tom wolf rejected their new map of the state's congressional districts. the state senate's republican majority leader said that wolf did not offer any solutions when he turned down their proposal. the state supreme court recently ordered the map to be redrawn, saying it was gerrymandered to unfairly favor republicans. the court will have to redraw the map if the state can't come up with its own solution my monday. well, has it hit you or your family? the flu season shows no signs of letting up. >> in fact, there are new concerns tonight after something that has never been seen in our area before. that's still ahead. you know, that's a question that everyone wants to know. my honest answer, not being politically correct is -- >> super bowl mvp nick foles gets real when he stops by the set of "ellen." plus, disappointment and near disaster. the message this luger has for her fans back home in pennsylvania after her olympic race came to a crashing halt.

she won gold last night in the halfpipe competition. kim had the winning score on her very first run. on her last of three runs, she scored even higher. york county summer britcher started out with a lot of promise for luge, but she came off the line crooked and hit the wall. she finished almost at the bottom of the standings. she talked about the fans cheering her on from home. >> i want to say thank you guys so much for all of your support and your love. i'm sorry i couldn't put together four clean runs, but the speed is there and i just, you know, i'll be here, i'll be working hard, and i'll be hitting it hard in four years. >> there you go. britcher isn't out just yet. she still has a chance to medal in the team competition on thursday. for her teammate emily sweeney, her race for gold ended in a crash. watch as she goes out of control

on one of the turns there. ah. after that, things go from bad to worse. fortunately, she walked away from that spill. philadelphia rapper meek mill got a shout-out at the olympics. take a look at this, 19-year-old from slovenia, snowboarder here wrote "free meek mill" on his board and showed it off during halfpipe qualifying rounds. mill is serving two to four years for probation violations here. critics argue his sentence is too harsh. nbc 10's keith jones will have more live coverage from pyeongchang tonight on nbc 10 news at 11:00. all right, imagine buying makeup you thought was new, but actually, it was used. that's what a new class action lawsuit claims ulta beauty stores did. the national chain is accused of repackaging and stocking shelves with returned cosmetics that shoppers would believe was, in fact, new. the items include shampoos, foundations, and mascaras. ulta denies the accusations. today is mardi gras, a

celebration otherwise known as fat tuesday, the last day before lent. here at home, it was all about the king cakes at the summit cakery and cafe in woodbury, new jersey. the shop sells about a hundred of the round and colorful pas y pastries every fat tuesday. >> each king came comes with a mardi gras beads and a baby jesus inside of it. and whoever the lucky person is whose slice of king cake has that, they're blessed with good luck for the year to come, but also responsible for buying the king cake next year. >> many people in our area also lined up for traditional fausnats today. >> making me hungry. the hats were on today in old city, as everyone's bundled up as they made their way around the area around fifth and market. let's take a live look down the shore from our camera in avalon. cape may county. this is really not much of a beach day down the shore, but temperatures aren't too cold. mild weather will continue and then some of this, right?

>> you know what, we're going to look like -- we're on a luge run. it's going to be crazy. tomorrow may be the quietest of the next four to five days. >> we're not going to crash? >> we're not going to crash, but you may have to use every different type of clothing that you have from flip-flops to parkas. let's go ahead and take a look at what's going on right now. gray skies out there. here's what you can expect. we're looking ahead to again a warm and wet week. we're going to see periods of showers and this is going to extend into next week. but we are going to be warm enough to hit the 50s and 60s this week, perhaps even 70 degrees next week. for tomorrow, valentine's day, we could see a sprinkle or a brief shower late tomorrow night. and that will extend into very early on thursday. and then we could see some holiday weekend -- i can't say it -- you can read it, right? it starts with an "s." yeah, there's a storm that may take shape. so we'll talk about that in just a moment. but what's more important is what's going to happen tonight and into your valentine's day. it's 39 right now in the lehigh valley.

37 in the suburbs. 36 in delaware. philadelphia at 40. 35 for south jersey. and 35 on the jersey shore. we do have mainly cloud cover out there with a few peeks of sunshine. so let's check out what's going on in the suburbs. new hope at 38 degrees. ft. washington at 38 degrees. elroy at 37. malvern at 37. and we go all the way over to oxford at 37 degrees. so everybody hovering just below average at this hour. we should be right around 42, 43 degrees this time of year. doppler radar picking up just some light showers. much of this not really hitting the ground, not getting a lot of reports. and some of this may come down as a little bit of a sleet. and that's across southern delaware, coming out of maryland. and that is part of a little system, just a little wave moving by, bringing us some of this cloud cover. we're going to focus on what's coming out of houston. this little piece of energy to bring us perhaps those showers for late tomorrow night and into thursday. then we head off of the west coast, this huge trough is going to develop a storm system that could affect us this weekend. and that is going to combine

with what you can see now, drifting out of canada. you see that little line? that's another storm system with some very cold air. so let's put this altogether and walk you through it. we have three different systems to watch. here's the houston system. watch as it comes through. now, this, the timeline, is going to be on wednesday night, tomorrow night, and thursday. and then you can see the two systems merging out in the western united states. so this is your friday. we see the rest of that houston system. and then we see that big system coming out of the southwest. and look at what could happen. we're going to be very close to the snow/rain line. at this point, we're putting a chance of rain in for saturday night, sunday. but we're watching this closely. this is going to evolve for somebody, doesn't necessarily have to be us, but this is worth watching. so tomorrow temperatures on the rise, all the way up to the 50s with a mix of sun and clouds. we go into your late night, there's a shower tomorrow night and into thursday. thursday, we hit the 60s. we could get a shower or storm

a man who tried to raise money for a pennsylvania state trooper shot in the line of duty is now being sued for his efforts. lawyers for nolan condekerm say printed signs to try to raise money for the family of seth kelley. those signs included the words, the hashtag, psp strong, and the psp strong association says his signs infringed on their trademark. they filed a suit for $50,000. by the way, kemmer had raised

$19,000 that he had planned to donate to the family of that wounded trooper. well, super bowl fever is still going strong. we're still living in that moment. >> yes, we are. another parade was held today, but just for nick and carson. well, not that nick and carson. check this out. these birds didn't hit the field. instead, the penguin brothers made their debut at adventure aquarium in camden. of course, carson and nick are named after the eagles' quarterbacks. they are pretty cute there. in about an hour, eagles fans will have a chance to meet running back, corey clement. he'll meet fans and sign autographs inside of dick's sporting goods in wilmington. tonight's event runs from 6:30 until 8:30. well, the flu just won't go away. up next, just how bad doctors say the season really is and when relief might finally be in sight. and a first for our region. the new facility opening its doors in our area tonight. coming up at 6:00, a story you'll only see on nbc 10.

meantime, delaware is confirming 995 new cases of the flu during the week of january 28th through february 3rd. the previous one-week record of 671 cases was reached eight years ago. now, the new numbers confirm the flu season is showing no signs of slowing down. >> tonight, nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong looks at the renewed effort to stop the flu from spreading. >> um, so we've been watching a lot of olympics and a lot of disney movies. >> reporter: stephanie's whole family is locked in their wilmington house with the flu. they all have all the symptoms. >> fatigue, congestion, headaches, body aches, cough that keeps everyone up all night. >> i've been lucky so far. >> reporter: orr irma is prayin shep doesn't get sick. she heard delaware smashed its one-week flu record last week, a thousand new cases. they know they're in a more flu-susceptible age category. they spend as much time wiping

down the equipment as they do using it. you hear this a lot. and so far all these gym members are staying healthy. >> they're not coughing, they're not catching anything from the environment, but you have to stay on it all the time. and fortunately, we do that all of the time. >> reporter: st. francis hospital in wilmington has had many, many people walking in with the flu. they have signs and masks for visitors, the purell machines. yeah, they're working overtime and the staff is using another very expensive stool. the guys who use this gun look like ghost bubusters, but they' not fighting ghosts, they're slaying germs. so doctors say you could still go out and get yourself a flu shot, but the rest of us need to step up our prevention game. the flu wants to take us down, we've got to fight back even harder. >> i'm surprised i haven't got it yet. >> reporter: doctors and nurse at st. francis hospital are worried about getting the flu. they, like the rest of us, trying to avoid becoming part of another record-breaking week. the first state flu fight isn't over. >> looks like we're heading towards a peak, but we're not on a downslope yesterday.

tim furlong, nbc 10 news. sky force 10 over breaking news in monroe township, gloucester county, where someone, we're told, is barricaded inside a home here. you're looking live right now. and as a precaution, people are advising people in this area to stay inside. this is the 1800 block of herbert boulevard. we'll continue to monitor that situation and keep you updated. in about 30 minutes, friends and family of a philadelphia police officer killed in the line of duty will gather to honor him. officer john plowski was shot and killed nine years ago in north philadelphia by a man trying to rob a cab driver. the vigil is at broad and olney streets where palowski was killed. now here's a lack at some of the stories making headlines county by county across our region today. we start in atlantic county. take a look at the number of people inside the atlantic city convention center today. wow. 4,800 people showed is up hoping

to score an interview or a job at stockton university's career fair. turnout was so high, organizers had to stop letting people in for a short time to make sure everybody had a chance to meet with vendors. in bucks county, the first medical marijuana dispensary in southeast pennsylvania opened today in sellersville. the tara vita holistic center expects to serve 20 to 30 people a day. the group says they will soon open two additional centers in abington and malvern. >> in mercer county, a princeton university professor cancelled a class on offensive speech. the reason, students said they were offended by the language used in the class. anthropology 212 focused on cultural freedoms, hate speech, blasphemy, and pornography. the university says it values free speech and inclusivity and plans to meet with the students. in north hampton county, faculty at lehigh university are considering whether to strip president trump of an honorary degree given to him 30 years

ago. a vote is expected in ten days and the results will be presented to the university's board of trustees. last summer, the board was given a petition with 34,000 signatures calling for the same action, but none was taken. ♪ the philadelphia orchestra is heading back to europe. today, the orchestra announced it will tour the continent in may. then in june, the musicians will make their second trip to israel. >> we're going to play in these historic, famous halls that we know, which are over a hundred years old and which created the history of music, but also newer ones, which are the new landmarks and flagships of classical music in the world. >> and the orchestra will also make stops in brussels and vienna. nbc 10 is your official home

of the winter olympic games. and as the olympic cauldron burns in south korea, team usa just racking up the medals. it's a trend that could continue tonight. >> we hope so. nbc 10's jinah kim joins us live from the games. and jinah, another big night on tap there. >> reporter: very big night, jim and erin. i don't know if you caught chloe kim's performance, but, wow, what a wait to hit it out of the park. and yesterday, we were telling you about how we were so close to that 100 u.s. golds of all time in the winter olympics. well, chloe gave us 99 yesterday, and today we have shaun white coming up who could take us past that century mark. >> comes around, back-to-back 1080s. >> reporter: 17-year-old chloe kim owned the halfpipe in her olympic debut, getting so far ahead after her first run that the gold was hers to lose. then teammate arielle gold flipped and twisted her way to bronze position. >> it's such an honor to just represent the u.s. and the country where my parents

emigrated from. >> this is qualifying! >> reporter: on the men's side, four-time olympian shaun white delivered near-perfect scores in his qualifying runs, setting him up as the one to beat going into today's medal race. >> oh, she's out of control! >> reporter: disappointment for the u.s. in luge. emily sweeney crashed hard in the women's singles medal event. >> i'm sorry that, that that's how it ended. >> reporter: and erin hamlin finished sixth. ted ligety finished sixth in the first alpine ski race. and maame biney failed to medal in speed skating. we are hoping for better news today and that could come in the form of mikaela shiffrin, who is a world champ right now in slalom. hers is a medal race coming up later today. and u.s. men's ice hockey will play their debut game against slovenia. >> a lot to look forward to. all right, jinah. and don't count out team usa luge just yet. the ladies still have a chance

when it comes to your brain, new research finds booze is worse than pot. scientists at the university of colorado boulder say medical scans show drinkers have long-term changes to the white and gray matter of their brains.

marijuana users don't show any significant brain changes. however, marijuana is known to harm the body's cardiovascular health. most parents-to-be can rest easy according to a new study. it shows no link between typical ultrasounds and the development of autism. but the study did find a slight risk of autism if the scan goes deeper into the mother's abdomen. scientists aren't quite sure why and say more research should be done. doctors suggest only having an ultrasound of your baby if it's medically necessary. well, if you're trying to shed some pounds, slow down. your eating, is what we're talking about. a new japanese study finds that people who eat more slowly, they tend to weigh less than people who gobble up their food. and slow eaters are 30% less likely to be dangerously overweight. the study also found skipping breakfast, that had absolutely no effect on obesity. >> sometimes it's hard to eat slow. >> sometimes i just gobble it up. speaking of fat, you may

former mayor let loose during today's mardi gras parades. the zulu parade is one of the two big parades on fat tuesday, and thousands of people line the streets for that annual tradition. and for people in the lehigh valley, fat tuesday means a time to indulge in a really sweet tradition known as the fasnacht. >> and as nbc 10's steven fisher shows us, for some, it's pretty much a tradition that today you eat at least one. >> reporter: it's a tradition that goes back years and years. and depending on where you're from, you might call it fat tuesday or you might call it fasnacht day. the chimes at the front door of bakery nook in copley sang all day long. >> i always come here. >> reporter: and they're all here today -- >> fasnacht, i think that's how you say it. >> reporter: -- for the same thing. >> we've been doing this all our lives, yeah. >> this is probably one of our biggest single days. >> reporter: bakery owner cook says fasnachts are a pennsylvania dutch traditions when families would make these donut-looking treats with whatever ingredients were left

31 if you're in the lehigh valley. let's scoot off to delaware, where it will be 34. the same for new jersey. about 36 along the jersey shore. from there, we're going to climb very nicely. we'll be in the low 50s across much of the area for your valentine's day. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds for much of the day, but we'll see clouds really increasing in the evening. there is a chance of a sprinkle or a shower at night. right now, speaking of sprinkles and showers, we do have some trying to make their way across the area. there's a little wave scooting past us, some of us not hitting the ground. we're getting very few reports of sprinkles out there. and if we put it into our mixed mode, where you can actually see the wintry precipitation, it looks like there's snow and perhaps even sleet coming down. that, i think, is in the upper atmosphere. it's just too warm down along the ground. so that's why we're seeing it come in as sprinkles and rain. otherwise, we have clouds in place. we have three storm systems off to the west of us, so i'm going to walk you through them all. again, we're going to the in the 30s, as we head into tomorrow morning. we'll make it into the 50s tomorrow for your valentine's

day. could see a shower if you're out and about tomorrow night with your sweetheart, about is 11:00, 10:00, toward midnight. we're going to be looking at the first of a couple of showers to come through. on thursday, i think we'll see clouds, maybe a springle during the day, and in the evening is when we'll see the heavier rain come in. we'll be in the 60s on thursday and even early friday morning in the 60s. and we drop into the 50s. then the winds turn to the northwest. cold air comes in. we're quiet on friday night, but look what happens. the final storm system that is out west is taking shape now, and it could come through bringing us some light snow, snow, a mix of snow, rain changing to snow. it's just too early to tell. but it looks like saturday, maybe late in the day, saturday night and into sunday, this could be something worth watching. then it's out of here very, very quickly. here is your ten-day on 10. 52 tomorrow. weekend see some sprinkles at night. 66 on thursday with a chance of a shower, but mainly that's going to be at night and into friday. 59 on friday.

here, richard o'rourke said he didn't want to hurt anybody, he merely wanted to kill rodents on his property. so he admitted to stealing the cyanide from his workplace. and then when investigators started asking questions, he said he dumped n eed it in a st drain. richard o'rourke tries to hide his face as he's led into court by police. investigators say he admitted to selling 200 dprams of si grams from merck and company laboratories on december 14th. >> so he stole chemicals from work to kill raccoons at his house? >> that's what he told us. >> reporter: but according to police paperwork, o'rourke was seen by a corker taking the cyanide and leaving with it. when o'rourke returned to work the next day, they say he was confronted by a coworker about the theft and he was able to leave the campus with the approval of merck representatives. police were called two days after the theft occurred. >> they told him to go home. and do you think that would have lent you time t
