>> oh, my god! >> it was around 2:30 this afternoon when authorities were called to marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, florida. it's on the southern tip of the state between boca raton and ft. lauderdale. a suspect is in custody. a video shows police putting a person in the back of a police car outside the school as parents and students reunite outside the school. it's emotional as they recount what happened and try to come to grips with it. >> it sounded like fireworks. we had to walk all the way past our middle school and down one by one all the way to here. >> just terrifying. terrifying for the parents. terrifying for the kids. very emotional. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams are clearing every building in the school to ensure that no other threat remains. the fbi is also on its way to the scene as well. live in the breaking news center, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> disturbing video from inside

that school today, lauren. nbc 10's miguel martinez valle is on his way to the scene. he'll be reporting to us live right here on nbc 10. this story is still developing at this hour. coverage continues on "nbc nightly news" with lester holt. that's ahead at 6:30. here at home, all new at 6:00 -- police say the group you see here built a cross-state pipeline that put assault rifles in the hands of people that should never have had them. they brought them in from ohio to south jersey where they were sold to criminals throughout camden. cydney long was there today as they announced several arrests. and more on how the ring operated. >> reporter: police tell me it was a heroin drug dealer arrest, as well as a routine traffic stop in west virginia that was anything but routine because as soon as police dug deeper, they cracked this gun trafficking ring wide open. they are military grade weapons of war. >> 17 guns linked to this weapons trafficking ring were

recovered. >> reporter: ar-15s, ak-47s and pistols with high capacity magazines like this confiscated from criminal hands on the streets of camden. >> each gun that we seize or take off the street is a life or multiple lives that we save in the process. >> reporter: police say he led them to chucky scott and his accomplice, a straw purchaser, anthony hammond. >> that's the individual with the clean record who is able to walk into gun stores in ohio or go online and buy firearms. >> reporter: then a 500-mile road trip. >> once scott had has orders in play, he and sometimes hammond would get in their car with the foorarms and drive them from ohio to new jersey. >> reporter: they worked with five camden middleman. he sold guns for profit for $2,000 a firearm. >> a number of those guns trafficked by this very ring were involved in a number of violent crimes.

>> something had to be done. all these events happening. mass shootings. all this stuff going on in the country. >> reporter: franco has been worried for his family's safety february 6th when a neighbor armed with an ar-15 shot at police. camden's chief says it's hard to measure the impact this will have close to home. >> there are several less felons that are supplying other gang members in this city with the devices that can kill innocent people. >> reporter: police called the takedown fair warning that anyone who thinks they can make a buck by selling guns will be aggressively prosecuted. i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. atlantic county father charged in the death of his baby son had his first court appearance today. jose rojas went before a judge by video on charges of aggravated manslaughter, assault and child endangerment. his 4-year-old son jacir was found with no pulse at the family's home last month and died a week later. rojas allegedly told police his son rolled off a bed but doctors

say the injuries were more severe. the baby's mother and her son's twin brother came to court today. >> i'm angry. i'm hurt. and i just want justice for my son. that's all. i just want justice for him. >> rojas' aunt insists her nephew is innocent and he's a wonderful father and says there must be another explanation for the baby's injuries. we're tracking some rain tonight in your first alert weather after a mild day. showers moving into the area later tonight. first alert meteorologist tammie souza is joining us with a timing on how much rain we're talking. >> it's going to be light rain showers. maybe 0.1%. somebody could see 0.25 inch. glorious temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s. 49 musc 49 in philadelphia and the temperature trend is going to hold steady. this is rain, not snow.

i bring that up because by saturday, we could be talking about some snow. we don't have the rain yet. doppler radar showing that it is just into the center portion of the state. so about another half hour to an hour. we'll see it moving into parts of the lehigh valley and berks county and even perhaps into chester county and delaware county. then it will be with us for the remainder of the evening. >> we're going to talk about the 60s on the way for tomorrow. we'll talk about that snow that's going to happen on saturday and we'll take a sneak peek at monday's holiday. now to an nbc 10 exclusive. an 11-year-old girl is handcuffed, arrested and locked up after she was involved in a fight on her darby borough school bus on monday. her mother says no one notified her about the arrest, that she had no idea what happened to her daughter. zakiha rodriguez says she was protecting herself from bullies. >> i was feeling like i wasn't

going to see my family anymore. >> who can look at this child and actually arrest her? >> we called the darby police chief several times throughout the day and went to the station for an interview but he was not there and did not return our calls. the girl's mother says the bus company is offering her a shuttle so she won't have to take the school bus. there was no promise of work in exchange for a donation to allentown mayor ed pulowski's campaign. a lawyer for the firm testified about a meeting between both sides who said no one from the mayor's office asked the firm for any work, and the firm had no expectation of receiving any work from the mayor's office. pulowski is on trial for federal corruption charges. officials are investigating what touched off a fire at the tropicana hotel in atlantic city. this is cell phone video from the ac fire department. fire officials say the blaze was contained to one room on the

44th floor. four floors were evacuated as a precaution. no injuries reported. the fire is considered suspicious. the local crews answering the call to assist in storm-ravaged puerto rico tonight. nearly 500,000 people there still without power. some four months after hurricane irma struck. tonight workers from delaware are getting ready to head from newark to puerto rico's hard-hit region there as tim furlong explains. they know they will have their work cut out for them. >> reporter: this right here, trucks and gear from ac electric, pepco and delmarva power on a barge headed south to puerto rico. these guys right here -- >> i enjoy helping everybody. i enjoy helping people. >> reporter: they are the local power workers who have volunteered to go south with that gear. they'll go deep into puerto rico helping people who still don't have power. a full five months after hurricane maria. this atlantic city electric employee here to help send off her co-workers on their way to help her family and so many others back on the island.

>> so for them to go, it's -- we don't know how to say thank you anymore. >> reporter: the team will leave our area sunday and be in puerto rico for at least 30 days. they'll be deep in the jungle and getting the lights back on for very appreciative americans. >> this is probably about my 15th trip. >> reporter: many have recently deployed to other parts of the country that needed help. >> it's a job we take pride in. self-gratifying to know we're going down there to help people out. >> reporter: these guys now leaving their families to help others in need. they'll be sweating it out long days climbing poles and stringing cable. they take their job seriously and look forward to seeing folks smile when they finally get their lights to come back on. >> these people, when we're in need, they'll come help us. and we're going to help them. >> reporter: in newark, delaware, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. christians across the area today and around the world are marking ash wednesday. the beginning of lent. people gathered at services at the cathedral basilica in center

city to receive ashes. ash wednesday begins six weeks of fasting and prayer leading up to easter. a live look at the olympic cauldron in pyeongchang. tonight american favorite mikaela shiffrin makes her debut in the giant slalom, if the weather cooperates. today the winds were so strong, it forced evacuations. tents were secured and fans asked to seek shelter in nearby buildings. by noon, general admission to the park was no longer allowed. windy conditions have postponed several events. the wind is calmer and competition is expected to continue tonight. beach volleyball has been part of the summer olympics since 1996, but what about snow volleyball? it's an actual sport and some are hoping it will make it into the games. olympic medalists played an exhibition match at one of the olympic villages. prince alberts of monaco was there. he's a member of the international olympic committee.

their boys. they may not really know what's going on, but they'll always have the pictures of the day mom and dad got married. in norristown, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> stick with that theme with our weather. a live look at love park. the iconic love statue is back there in the park. could see some rain tonight but not right now. first alert meteorologist tammie souza, when is this all supposed to start? not the rain, but the love. >> the love has been going all day long. everyone seems to be in a good mood. the rain is going to start moving in. it will start in reading and move into chester county, delaware county, philadelphia and into parts of delaware and south jersey. right now we have clouds out there and very pleasant night. here's what you can expect. we will see those showers tonight. also showers tomorrow night. i think the showers come to an end before dawn tomorrow and then 60s and more rain moving in tomorrow night. several systems moving past us. on saturday, we have a system

that is going to be a merger two of large systems out in the western united states. it's coming at us from the southwest. and this one could be a snow producer for a large part of our area. we could see the area bisected with snow in some places and rain in other places. and then on monday, we are going to see showers but i think it's going to be later in the day. let's start with our neighborhood. 46 in lehigh valley. 51 in the pennsylvania suburb s. south jersey, 48. and 48 along the jersey shore. a little closer look at your neighborhoods. bedminster, 49. we go to arrington, 51. new hope, 52. north wales, 51. elroy, 51. malvern, 47 and oxford, 45 degrees. so everybody is above where we should be this time of year which is 44 degrees. we're very comfortable. nothing in the area yet for doppler radar but look to the west of harrisburg. showers moving quickly into the area. we have nothing to block the systems that are moving through.

they'll move through fast. you can see that long line of moisture that's still yet to come. this is something that we're going to deal with. probably until about, oh, 1:00, 2:00 in the morning. now we're watching two systems out to the west. one coming out of canada in the northern rockies. the other out of southern california. they come together. and when they do come together, this is what's going to produce the snow. a lot of energy that's going to be formed at the last minute. watch the numbers. we're going to be in the 40s tonight. rain moves out. we start in the 50s tomorrow. make it to the 60s by tomorrow afternoon. we hang in the 60s with more rain tomorrow night and into friday. still hanging onto the 60s. here comes that first cold front. we're below freezing. temperatures are chilly. here comes that system that merged out in the west. it's starting as rain and switching over to snow. saturday afternoon. saturday night could get accumulating snow. could see snow across the southern half of delaware and along the jersey shore. then out of here by sunday morning. if you don't want a shovel, and there may be a little shoveling.

we want to update you on the breaking news out of florida. the deadly shooting at a high school there. we've just learned authorities are confirming at least 17 dead in this high school shooting in parkland, florida. police have also identified the suspect who is in custody. his name is nicolas cruz, an
