night, glenn. >> yeah, rosemary it's wet but also warm. it looks like it' about to gettter. you can see some rain in the southern half of delaware and near the south jersey shor from the west and it's a pretty significant area. it's not quite as heavy as it was a few hours ago, but once it does make it in, it could be a steady rain for several hours this afternoon before we get into the drier air. here's the future cast hour by hour. as you can see, this rain moving in 1:00 to 2:00 depending on where you are and then starting to move out as we go into the afternoon rush. so we're talking about several hours of rain. and then had the rain ends as the colder air starts to come in, and by 7:30 tonight we're already clear. it's 57 degrees in philadelphia right now, despite the clouds and the flan southern delaware we're near 60 degrees. 60 in atlantic city. hard to believe that not much
11:04 am
more than 24 hours from now it's going to be snowing. snowing. and meteorologist steve sosna will tell you about that part. >> it's wild stuff. had is something that you would typically experience in march or he'll early april. it has all the trademarks of an early snow system. north and west of the city that's your main target zone. lehigh valley, the pennsylvania suburbs we're calling this a pennsylvania turnpike type storm because those are where the places we could see the highest amounts. 6:00 p.m. saturday through 5:00 a.m. on sunday is the worse the travel conditions out there, and the reason why? we're anticipating anywhere between 3 and 6 inches of not just powdery snow but heavy, wet, sloppy snow and that will impede travel for some time. glen showed you the rain, i'm showing you the snow on the back end of the system. that's showing colder air bleeding to the south. this is a big travel weekend, president's day weekend, we have snow alerts all wait through southern new england. now is the time do your travel,
11:05 am
tomorrow evening the time not do your travel. here's 6:00 p.m. on saturday. notice how the temperatures are well above freezing in south jersey and delaware that's why we're not too concerned about you. but from philadelphia northwest these temperatures cool to about 32 degrees and that snow continues through just after midnight. so it's that quick burst of snow that will lead to road conditions that will be slippery and sloppy. but by sunday morning it's out of here and by lunchtime we're into the 40s. so the impacts by sunday are minimal but saturday night will be tough. here's what i'm anticipating, snow that sticks here, especially across the pennsylvania suburbs and the lehigh valley. you'll see a good deal of snow in philadelphia but it will be melting on the ground. the best kind of snow if you don't like shoveling. and then wet conditions here on the jersey shore and the beaches. coming up glenn will breaking it down neighborhood by neighborhood. >> we'll let you look at the live radar on the nbc 10 app and
11:06 am

11:07 am
could have been done to prevent wednesday's tragedy. investigators are still processing the scene at stoneman douglas high school two days after wednesday's school massacre. court documents say a former student confessed to police shortly after they arrested him. few who knew him seemed surprised that he's accused of killing 17 people and some wonder if he could have been stopped. >> this child was deeply zis disturbed. >> in september they called the fbi after someone commented on his youtube page i'm going to be a professional school shooter. >> i just felt that it was important to get it to the proper authorities so they could do an investigation. >> reporter: but the fbi says agents couldn't figure out who was behind the posting even though cruz used his real name. >> we know this is going to take a long time but we're here and we're going to do it together. >> reporter: meanwhile, a shattered community tries to heal with prayer services and vigils. students are starting to realize they'll never see
11:08 am
again. >> i was really close with them too and it's horrible. like why? >> reporter: today brings the first of 17 funerals, the life of 14-year-old elisa alla dav among those being celebrated. elisa's mother says she wants her daughter's fronds live and breathe for her because she is no longer here. and it's mid-day, there are still seven injured and wounded being treated in local hospit seven is still in critical condition. live in parkland florida rosemary back to you i philly. >> before you go we've been hearing stories of teaches and coaches who shielded children from the gunfire. tell us about it. >> reporter: 14 children that were killed many this massacre three staff members, teachers, and a coach, as you mentioned. people here just eternally grateful for the sacrifices they made literally that assistant football coach, aaron feis that

11:12 am
11:13 am
back to that breaking news we've been following out of west oak lane. that's where philadelphia police are going from room to room at the wagner middle schools checking out the premises. they received a report of a man with a gun there. right now officers haven't found any weapons and there are no reports of any injuries but
11:14 am
obviously they are taking this potential report very seriously. we're going to check in with nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal who's lye at the scene in about 15 minutes at 11:30 for the latest developments. stay with us. take a look at that sinkhole in roam. as you can it swallowed up a number of cars and forced people from their houses. the hole opened up near a construction site. investigators are now questioning both the construction company and the property owner. police have shut down the neighboring area. no reports of anybody injured here. ba we are tracking snow on the way for your saturday night. if you live in the suburbs north of philly you can expect to see some accumulating snow as meteorologists call it. as we head from 60s to temperatures closer to freezing, a lot of folks are doing a 180 and probably rethinking their weekend plans. nbc 10's pamela osborne is live where she's been talking to people getting ready for a dose of snow. i mean it is still winter, pam. we're still in february.
11:15 am
>> reporter: yeah, but it's hard to imagine that it's going to be snowing tomorrow because it feels really good outside right now. we've seen people walk around in short sleeve shirts light workout clothes, people running errands trying to get through the day and to enjoy these temperatures. but, as we know, it's only a matter of time before the temperatures drop and we see some snow. you may have to do some calling around to find salt. if you're out of it at home, the first stop is home depot, they tell me they're completely sold out of salt at this point. we checked around and found the true value hardware center had plenty left on shelves. the 50 bound bag was on sale for $26.99. they had some smaller size on well as well as shovels and other winter accessories. we've been talking to people what their plans are. some of the people we spoke to didn't realize it was going to be snowing. others were aware and planning accordingly. either way the theme seems to be stay indoors and enjoy it. >> don't have a lot of things to get but i will go to the grocery
11:16 am
store and get some provisions for the evening so we can have a nice quiet dipper and enjoy the snowfall. >> who's on snow duty? whose going to have to clean up after it? >> my husband. >> sit back relax and watch the snowfall and watch it disappear. >> not worried about salt shoveling, none of that? >> none of that. i've got a shovel but i'm not expecting to use it. >> issnow? >> yes. home. i don't have anyplace go so i will be in front of the tv. yeah, saturday it's a good sports day so if it's snowing a sporting event on tv i'm there. >> reporter: i think that that's a really good plan to stay in front of tv tomorrow. hey, the good news is the snow isn't going to start until later tomorrow so you still have some time if you have errands ton run or things to get ahead of the snow. reporting live i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news.
11:17 am
things to get, a good movie and definitely some essentials like popcorn. glenn "hurricane" schwartz knows this weather roller coaster all too well. we've seen this before where we go from these extremes of really warm weather to frigid weather and we get some snow to boot. yeah this is typical of what happens in the springtime. it's not quite as typical happening in february but this is a ditch kind of a climate that we have. we have spring in february sometimes. we have warm and damp today. we've got snow coming in saturday night. may not believe it, but it's coming. and then very warm next week. record warmth. so we go from warm to snow back to warm. we've got the first alert out for the pa suburbs, lehigh valley berks county. this is the area that's going to be hardest hit, not the only area that's going snow. 6:00 p.m. saturday through 5:00 a.m. sunday. problems are from
11:18 am
6:00 p.m. to midnight, of course that's your saturday night. if you want to switch that to sunday no problem then. friday night no problem thhat 3 to 6 inches heavy, wet snow, sloppy slippery. if you wait long enough it's going to melt on its own. it will melt while it's falling or it will melt on sunday. here's the you can see just a rain approaching here. and so we're going to be seeing more of that coming in durin the rest of the day. so this is today's system. we've got the other one tha th new mexico riding this powerful jet stream coming in. this is moisture coming in from the ocean. 57 in philadelphia now. 61 in northeast philly. 62 at rehoboth beach. and 30 hours from now it's snowing. here's the hour by hour. by this afternoon we're starting to see the rain, not only move in, but getting ready to move
11:19 am
out. and already ending in lehigh valley, berks county. and it's gone by later on during the day. then, tomorrow morning we're cold. below freezing. one of the keys is how much do we warm up during the afternoon tomorrow? maybe up to 40. the snow is falling and temperatures are above freezing so a lot of it's going to melt if it's coming down real hard and some of it could, then you have some visibility issues. it starts piling up on the grassy sur fariss. you can see in philly the temperature never goes below freezing. so we're expecting 3 to 6 inches north and west of philly, 1 to 3 mostly melting northern delaware up through burlington county and then mainly rain to the south. we'll break this down neighborhood by neighborhood a little bit later. >> see you shortly. thanks, glenn. tomorrow night at 7:00 there will abi charity hockey game at the stadium to honor fallen
11:20 am
firefighter matt letourneau. the game will feature members of the philadelphia fire department playing against the try county hockey club put may remember he died while battling a home fire in philadelphia earlier this year. the fire also killed a man living inside the home. organizers of tomorrow night's hockey game are asking for a $10 donation at the door which will go towards charities that help firefighters and their families. coming up on the ice at the winter olympics this year a new crop of hockey talent is competing. players whose names you probably haven't heard before are getting a shot to go for gold, including some from our area. who they are and why the pros aren't playing still ahead. plus raising awareness about the challenges young people face in another part of the world. we'll show you why that mission has brought two men from kenya all the way here to philadelphia.

11:25 am
that's why we are here today in philadelphia. >> you mentioned the organization. we're talking about the masai youth outreach organization. tell us about some of the issues that the young people of your tribe face every day. >> we have people that are assisting our muslim community especially our young girl that normally are being forced to be married while young and being forced to female gender mutilation. so our organization is trying to chase this away from our community. because you can find literally young girl age 9 to -- old man or even 6 to 5 years. >> so you said marriages at a young age, female genital
11:26 am
mutilation. so the government wants to make sure you're out in the world raising awareness and raising found try to stop this. >> yes. because we're a rescue center of which the young girls came to us, we take them to the rescue center so that they can access education there, not go back to the village because their family will force them to be married while still young. >> the young women would who have come to the rescue center what are they've lives like once they are out of that situation? are they thriving? >> when they are at the safe house, our center. >> the safe house you said. >> yeah. their life is very good because they get everything at the safe house. they get education, they get water, they get clothing. so it is much better compared to when they are home. of course when they are at their homes, their fathers force them to marry.
11:27 am
also we have a lot of activities do like helping their parents fetching water so at least when they're at the safe house they are much better. >> they're safe. >> they are safe. >> really quickly before we go part of your mission, too, is to educate people about the kenyan culture. you're clothed in traditional dress. tell us a part of what you're wearing and what you have with us. >> had these are very important clothes like jewelry like you can see this this is usually given to leaders. because eye am a leader of the organization, when my father was a young man like me he was a leader of a certain organization and when he was there he said this to be given to his son when he become a leader. so that why i'm having this also. also the clothes, they represent our culture. when we come places like this we put on be this and we believe when we put on these clothes
11:28 am
it's out of respect and we should wear like this when we come to a special place like this. >> we really appreciate you joining us and making the trip to philadelphia. thank you very much for coming here and for the work that you're doing. >> thank you. >> if you'd like more information, just go to the nbc 10 app and search for find it on 10. as we said they're raising awareness and funding for their cause. this morning here we continue to follow some breaking news out of philadelphia's west oak lane neighborhood. a middle school under lockdown. coming up we'll hear from parents with a live report from the scene about what sparked this police response. plus the warning signs missed that could have prevented the school shooting in florida. what we're now learning from the fbi about that tip on a youtube page.

news frmtss news. that breaking news, a local middle school under lockdown a student said saw a young man with a gun in the bidding. police have been searching wagner middle school in philadelphia's west oak lane neighborhood looking for anybody suspicion or a gun in the neighborhood. so far nothing. officers are taking this very seriously. randy gyllenhaal has been on the scene since shortnt out. what you can tell us, randy? >> reporter: right now we are told that a second search of the school is under way. nothing was found in that initial search. had is happening as parents here behind me are waiting for any news. their children have been moved from an auditorium to classrooms they were originally hiding in just waiting for police to finish the search inside the building. s.w.a.t. teams and k nine yunts came to before 9:00 this morning after a student reported seeing a young man with a gun inside the school building. that triggered an immediate lockdown. police began searching for that suspect, but at this point no suspect and no gun has been

located. police do tell us everybody's safe no injuries to report, but they're clearing the classrooms as a precaution as parents, grand parents race to the scene as they heard the news. >> they took cell phones, i heard her crying. she was hysterical crying to her mom and her mom was trying to calm her down saying that everything is okay. but as far as we know the kids are laying down right now on the floor, they've been like that since 9:30 spot we're just glad that no one got hurt. >> reporter: those children now have been moved from their classrooms into that auditorium. parents do tell me they wish that metal detectors would be installed in the school. they're going to wait out here until they're released. the student who reported seeing that gun to the principal did the right thing in this case. i'm randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. talk about a dreary end to
11:34 am
the workweek there are say live look over center city, philadelphia, where we will see rain for much of the day. mild temperatures, that's the bonus, bow don't worry, that will change. glen blen is tracking all of these changes for us. you were tellingmy a moment ago people shouldn't be fooled by this lull that we're experiencing right now. >> yeah because we have more coming in from the west. we have rain overnight and into the morning, a bit of a lull and then here comes the rest of it. we're starting to see it in chester county and berks county right now. it's generally on the light side, but there's more of it back to the west and it's got to come through here before we get into the drier air back to the north and west. and that's what our future cast is showing hour by hour the rain moving in and breaking up a little bit. so it's not as heavy as it was in western pennsylvania. and by the middle of the afternoon rush we're starting to see that rain move away. so much of pennsylvania already dry by 5:00 but new jersey and
11:35 am
delaware still wet. that will move out by 6:00 or 7:00 and the drier, colder air starting to come in. look at these temperatures. it's 57 in philadelphia, 61 northeast philly, and dover, even cold spots are way up in the 50s. but the temperature is going to be drop being as we through the afternoon but still not too bad by 6:00. later on tonight, it's getting colder and colder setting us up for that snow tomorrow. mgt steve sosna will tell you about that part. >> that's right. this wouldn't be an unusual storm if was april but it's february outside and we have warm temperatures we had 60s yesterday and earlier this morning. now the clouds continue and this is a live shot now in allentown and you're one of the shots where the snow will stick here by tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. so what you need to know the snow begins around 6:00 here. and check in with tammy and glen and i here later on today, we'll have another update at 4:00 on
11:36 am
the timing arifle of this. but it looks like it will taper off after 3:00 a.m. on sunday morning. this is a tough twoun shovel north and west. it's a back break, he it's that heavy, wet, pasty snow. just let the snow melt in the city. a lot of those flakes will melt upon contact and whatever doesn't melt will melt off quickly on sunday morning. and then just umbrellas south and east. the cold air bleeding down from the south. and i've broken down your travel cast here. it does look like we will see the said ittiest snow arriving here again after 6:00. so this is lunchtime here tomorrow. we're dry across the area. good travel weather. here's 5:00, you see the snow building off to the south to the west and it's that quick wall of snow. what gets us in trouble, though, sometimes is the snowfall rate. that snow will be coming down at a good clip for several hours, especially from the pennsylvania turnpike north. that's where most of that snow will stick. and then by 2:30, 3:00 in the morning it's out of here and you're waking up to sunshine on sunday morning. and that's good news. so snow is that sticks again
11:37 am
along and north of the pennsylvania turnpike the i-95 corridor just mainly melt maybe some snow on the grass, and then just wet conditions across the jersey shore. so from snow to possibly shorts glenn will be talking about a major warm-up coming up in that ten-day forecast. >> that's what i like to here. all right thanks for that. when we are not on the air, remember you can get the latest on the weekend snow and the changes to our weather with the free nbc 10 app. this morning there are questions about whether the fbi could have stopped the school massacre in florida. the burrow says it was unable to track down the person who posted a youtube comment saying i'm going to be a professional school shooter. that happened this past fall. the person posted as nikolas cruz, the same man who authorities say carried out massacre. agents searched public records databases but could not identify the user who made that comment.
