interference. the president grabbed information inside the indictment to show that russians started this interference in 2014 before he was a candidate to try to claim the trump campaign was not involved. the president ignored questions about the russian probe. hours after he had been briefed by the deputy attorney general. >> the defendants conducted what they called information warfare against the united states. >> reporter: for more than a year, the president repeatedly discredited the russia investigation. >> there was none. it was a hoax. >> reporter: and mocked any suggestion russia tried to help him. >> have you seen any russians in west virginia or ohio or pennsylvania? >> reporter: the government now says russians did come to the u.s. under false pretenses in 2014. to begin collecting intelligence

for their election interference operation. friday's indictment charged 13 russian nationals and 3 russian companies with an organized multimillion dollar plot to sow disco discord. and the american political system overall. carried out on social media and in life. >> russians paid real americans to engage in political activities and promote political campaigns and stage rallies. >> reporter: russian operatives posed as american political activists with stolen or fake identities and used a u.s. based computer network to conceal the real location. part of the mission was to spread derogatory information about hillary clinton. the indictment says they made contact with unwitting members of supporters and of the trump

campaign. >> no allegation in the indictment that any american had any knowledge. >> reporter: the white house seized on that to make a broader claim. using trump favored all caps to say the investigation found no collusion with the trump campaign and russia. even though that assertion goes beyond the scope of the indictment. and in a separate development involving the former chairman of the trump campaign, paul manafort, who has been indicted, prosecutors identified additional banking crimes that relate to his past business practices. although there is no indication yet they added any new charges to the indictment. manafort says he is innocent of the charges. craig, natalie. >> kelly o'donnell in west palm beach. thank you. >> matthew miller served as spokesperson of the department. he is now a justice and security analyst. matt, good morning to you. >> good morning.

>> this seems to be another time that we will use the word unprecedented which seems to mcconne come around a lot. it is history when you read through the details of the 37-page indictment. it is stunning the efforts that the russians, 13 individuals named and 3 companies end with to undermine the democracy. walk us through this indictment? >> this was an historic moment for the justice department and united states in revealing a more sweeping plot to violate u.s. election law and interfere in the election. we all knew about activities on social media. this indictment reveals a plot that started earlier than we knew and better financed than we kn knew. at some point over 1 million dollars in the budget a month. and operatives coming to the united states and gather intelligence and recruiting people to go to rallies and attend hillary clinton rallies and protest.

this was a sweeping conspiracy. this is just the beginning of mueller's investigation. there will likely be more indictments to come. >> matt, president trump did not respond to shouted questions yesterday at the white house. he did take to twitter. this is what the president tweeted yesterday afternoon. he said in part russia started the anti-u.s. campaign in 2014. long before i announced i would run for president. the results of the election were not impacted. the trump campaign did nothing wrong. no collusion. matt, president trump for a long time insisted that the whole thing was a sham and a ruse. now it appears he is acknowledging that russia did in fact interfere with our election. what do you make of the tweet and the president's apparent change of heart? >> you know, the president continues to behave with respect to the investigation more like a defendant than president. what you would expect a president to do here is react

not just about himself and his campaign, but about what this means for the country and what the government he leads is going to do to respond. we haven't seen that from the president. he has now finally dropped the idea this is a hoax. we are still not seeing leadership from him to tell the american people what we will do to prevent this in the future. we saw the intelligence chiefs testify to congress they believe the russian interference is not over. it will come again in the 2018 mid terms and the 2020 presidential election as well. >> matthew miller, thank you. meanwhile, president trump is spending the weekend at his estate in florida. before he arrived in parkland, florida. the community rocked by the horrific school shooting. the president met with victims and thanked first responders as well. this as outrage grows over the

fbi tip about the shooter that the agency now admits it mishandled. we have maya rodriguez is in parkland where the memorial to the 17 victims continues to grow. maya, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. in addition to the tip that the fbi received, the sheriff's office here is revealing over the years they received more than 20 calls regarding the suspected shooter. all of this as this weekend more funerals are set for the victims. as families and friends say good-b good-byes, this morning, the fbi under fire for the mishandling of the detailed tip in january. warning nikolas cruz has desire to kill. >> the caller provided information about nikolas cruz with the potential of him becoming a school shooter. >> reporter: the agency admitted it did not follow-up on the tip. governor rick scott calling for the fbi director's resignation.

students stunned. >> they failed us on the mond monumentous level. >> reporter: and the president stopped by the hospital and sheriff's office friday night. praising their response. >> very sad something like that could happen. the job the doctors did and nurses and hospital and first responders, law enforcement. really incredible. >> reporter: anger is building. >> we are not safe. >> reporter: over how there could be another mass shooting at a school. >> 17 is too many. >> we want to send a message to the politicians that they cannot allow this to continue. >> reporter: for debbi hixon whose husband chris died in the shooting. >> he wasn't just a hero on wednesday. he was a hero every day. >> reporter: the issue is bigger. >> it is not just because the fbi dropped the ball on that

particular kid. it is happening all over the place. that is a huge problem. >> reporter: a problem nicole hocknley says. >> this could be important with the support of the world around you and compassion in the community. you can still feel lost. and they're not. >> reporter: now the angels you see behind me were originally set up in another nearby town to honor the victims of sandy hook. after what happened wednesday, they were moved to parkland. craig and natalie. >> wow. >> it would be nice to never see those angels again. maya rodriguez, thank you. the east coast is gearing up for another winter storm this weekend. dylan is here to tell us what to expect. >> the good news is it is the weekend and fast moving system. it is not going to have a huge impact on people trying to get around hopefully you can stay home. take a look at what we are seeing.

the storm is still back through the plains bringing snow to the st. louis area and into southern illinois. lots of rain farther south. as this storm moves east, we have a rain/snow line. we have winter storm warnings and advisories in effect. 35 million people at risk for some sort of winter weather. we will see the storm race from the midwest and move through the ohio valley and tennessee valley where it will produce rain and once it gets to west virginia, it turns to snow and the snow will continue to fall, especially northern new jersey, north of new york city will see heavy bands of knsnow. as for snowfall totals. rain/snow line impacts who gets what. we will see widespread 1 to 3 inches of snow. you get north of new york and you could see 4 to 7 inches with isolated higher amounts across southern new england. the storm will move out by sunday. everything will start to melt.

25 in blue bell. 29 in philadelphia. these temperatures will pick up to the upper 30s and even a spot 40 here or there. mostly south, as we get into the afternoon hours. that's important because of what i'm showing you here. on radar and satellite, now currently it's clear, a sunny start. get out and run your errands. by midday and into tonight, the system will be moving over us. it's going to bring that mixture of rain and snow. rain mostly for areas like southern delaware and south jersey and snow mixing in over the i-95 corridor. it's the areas knot and west, the pennsylvania suburbs, our first alert has been issued. from the 6:00 tonight through 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. 3 to 6 inches of heavy wet snow expected around 8:00 p.m. tonight, right when you may have evening plans. heavier snow starting to accumulate.

point. i already made all of the mistakes in the short program. at this point, if i had a couple mover fal more falls, it would not change anything. >> when did you decide? i read you didn't tell him. >> i didn't. it was an idea. we thought about it for a while. at the end of the day, it was a game time decision. >> i'm looking over at your family here off to the side. i know your mom was a big pusher. she said go for it. >> definitely. she is always supporting me to push myself to the limit. try the most difficult program. she knows i'm cape able of doin it. she supports that. >> you, when you were 7 years old, we have seen this clip a number of times. you predicted you would be here in 2018. you did it. do you have a prediction for beijing in 2022? >> 10-year-old nathan is confident. i mean, i think so.

trained to compete while he was in combat. he is one of the group of u.s. soldiers hoping for gold on the bobsled track here in pyeongchang. nbc's hans nichols has the story. >> reporter: sergeant first class nate weber is not the typical olympian. before he pushed the bobsled, he had to train in sands of afghanistan. weber prepared for the olympics deployed pushing military vehicles and sprinting down dusty roads and pulling anything he could find. he even worked out while under fire from the taliban. >> i get little pieces of metal hitting me in the arm and face. i need to go stand up against a wall. i need to not be out in the open. then as i stand there, it hit me. my adrenaline gets going. i bet i could run really fast. >> you used the adrenaline of comb combat? >> yes. >> for the 30-year-old father of

two girls, the road to pyeongchang has detours. one of the highest hurdles, finding shade in the scorching heat. >> it is 130 degrees out. you could not touch the bar. >> the biggest challenge for most olympic hopefuls is making the team. weber dealt with the loss of his friend. staff sergeant adam thomas on the battle field. >> i was tasked with bringing him home to his wife. that was one of the hardest things that i have ever had to do. >> reporter: before every practice, weber wears a reminder to keep his memory alive. >> i want him there with me on the top of the hill when we race. >> reporter: weber is joined by two others who traded their army camo for red, white and blues. now, fine tuning their bodies for a different mission. what is harder? basic training or olympics? >> i would say basic training is

harder. >> i would say training for the olympics. here, there is no one to tell you to do it. >> one thing they all agree on? >> we always pump each other. we are going back and forth. >> reporter: their comradery is similar to another olympic bobsled team. "cool running" accurate? >> i have not seen an egg yet in my decade in the sport. >> picking up a four-man bobsled and carrying it your shoulders? not happening. >> reporter: they hope their military background will help win hardware for team usa. for weber whose deployment kept him away from the family, he plans to fly his girls to south korea and plans to look for them after he crosses the finish line. for "today," hans nichols nbc

school shooting. president trump visiting first responders and victims hours after the fbi announced it botched a tip that was called in about the shooter. could this tragedy have been avoided? nbc's maya rodriguez is in parkland where a memorial to the victims is growing this morning. maya, good morning. >> reporter: this weekend is bringing painful reminders, craig, of the lives lost in the school shooting on wednesday. including the memorial here set up behind me. it was originally at the nearby town meant to honor victims of sandy hook. it was brought to parkland after wednesday's shooting. there have been some funerals for the 17 victims which had taken place. others are planned. the defense team for the accused shooter, 19-year-old nikolas cruz, says he would take a plea deal for a life sentence. cruz reminds behind bars on 17 counts of premeditated murder.

the victims of the florida school shooting. he did not speak about it. this was a stunning indictment. 13 russians and 3 russian companies charged with defrauding the u.s. government for interfering in the 2016 election. the details are stunning. this was a fewell financed and organized operation. russians pretended to use u.s. identities to be political activists. they hired americans to stage rallies and carry signs and even to dress up in unflattering hillary clinton costumes. they did it to sow discord in the process and helping the trump campaign and denigrating clinton and messing with other campaigns and the system overall. this involved social media, but an in-person component as well. the americans who actually were working with the russians did not know russians were behind it. they were unwitting
