keep on scratchin'! starting to snow. snowflakes mixed with rain are falling north and west of philadelphia. we have issued a first alert. neighborhood weather, depending on where you live, you're going to see different amounts of snow. we'll tell you who will see the most. slushy and sloppy. we're out on the roads to see what to expect if you're heading out tonight. >> right now at 6:00, first alert. a snowstorm is making a quick stop over the region. we'll see heavy wet snow in the pennsylvania suburbs, 3 to 6 inches in lehigh and berks counties. a messy mix in the city and rain at the jersey shore and delaware. good evening, i'm denise nakano. that snow is falling in parts of our region and is expected to move out overnight.

. we have team coverage for you tonight. neighbors are seeing the first of that snow. andrea klein thomas is driving around in storm force 10 to show you conditions. >> denise, so we've seen a rapid advancement of the snow into our area, it's snowing in philadelphia right now, snowing in most of our neighborhoods at this hour, it went from a sunny beautiful day to a stormy day very quickly, um here in the poconos, they like the snow on this president's day weekend. it's snowing in wilmington, delaware as well. we've seen the snow push in in the last hour or two, the steadiest to heaviest snow now in south jersey and delaware at the moment. it's snowing heavily. vineland, out toward dover right now. your temperatures right around 32 degrees. into philadelphia, it's snowing light to moderate right now, along i-95 and the boulevard and some other areas are snowing too

to the north and west. the temperature dropped quickly to 32. anywhere you see 32, over time we could start to see the slippery travel begin. especially your bridges, overpasses, on and off ramps, proceed with caution wherever you see this. down at the shore, you may not see any accumulation at all. the sticking snow looks like along the pennsylvania turnpike to the north and west, there could be slush along -- let's say i-95 into the city neighborhoods urgs mainly on the grass and car surfaces, if you live in the pink area, you're not shoveling out from this snow tomorrow morning. it's colder areas north and west. you will have to dig out from a heavy sloppy 3 to 6 inches of snow. coming up in a little bit, i'll break down when the snow ends. it's a faster end time and also record warmth for next week. >> snow is already falling in the lehigh valley. nbc10's drew smith is live in

coopers berg, just outside of allentown, what are you seeing? >> well, it's coming down really heavy, as you can see here, there's already been a lot that's accumulated on the grassy surfaces, but if you look over at the highway, not much of it is sticking to the pavement over there, it's been so warm in the past few days, but if we take a look at the parking lot over here, you can see it's beginning to pile up here, a good amount is sticking to the pavement there. the slippery conditions beginning to set in here, we've seen some plows ready to go here, they have been out on the roads, and it was just a few moments ago, it was a scramble at the supermarket across the street. they have the sleds, the rock salt, the shovels, all of that out for people to come get. we were speaking to some people who were ending their work shiftsing early today. >> you're racing against the clock here tonight? >> yes, that's why i'm

funeral of what will likely feel like a series of them. people in a stunned community trying to find light in the darkness and strength in each other. chris pallone, nbc news, parkland, florida. >> the shooting has sparked a national debate about gun control, and the best way to keep kids safe in school. we went to the philadelphia gun show in the northeast, to see what folks there are saying. >> a lot of times when we have shooting like this, the liberals immediate reaction is to ban guns. there's millions of law abiding gun owners in this country. they're not the ones that have committed that crime. >> people who have mental illness problems, shouldn't be able to have access to a firearm. >> we protect our money at banks with guns. we actually, in the prisons, we're protecting prisoners with guns. but our precious children are in gun free zones. let's start arming the teachers. >> the philadelphia gun show

welcome back. we're in a first alert, because heavy wet snow is falling in parts of the area. here's a live look on the left side from our camera in coopersburg. steve is tracking the snow and how it could impact your neighborhood. >> the london brigade battled this kburning building this morning in central london. the building was being remodeled when it went up in flames. firefighters were worried about

slushy and sloppy out there tonight. depending where you are, some areas getting a heavy rain, other areas are getting snow you'll have to dig out from. near 80 degree temperatures in your 10-day forecast.

after days of unusually warm weather, winter weather returns with snow, here's a live picture at music pier in ocean city, where it's only raining right now. it's not sticking around for long. long enough to issue a first alert. we're back in a couple minutes with what you need to know. a live look at the olympic cauldron in pyeongchang, south korea, where the games continue tonight. after a couple days of medal drought, team usa added a silver

to their collection. bringing us up to a total of 9 medals. perhaps the biggest highlight came in an event where we did not medal. the tricks get bigger and more difficult. that happened last night on the ice. he didn't win a medal, but nathan chen became the first man to attempt a jump that requires him to spin four times in the air, he did it six times in a row. that gave him the highest technical score ever recorded in the free skate program. >> honestly, i was a little over it. tomorrow's a new day, i'll have to finish what i started, but i've been really happy. i didn't have any expectations for myself. >> lindsay von still has two more races and opportunities for a medal. you can always find the latest medal counts, plus, what's streaming right now. click on our special olympics coverage.

what a difference a few hours make. we saw these girl scouts selling girl scout cookies. they were in sweatshirts and sunglasses no coats today, it was so sunny earlier in the day. you can see the snow moving in across the area. a couple days of warm weather, this is more of a nuisance snow than anything else, it's not going to be snow for everyone. here's a live look at center city, where you can see how cloudy it is. by tomorrow, will any of the snow that's falling be sticking around? >> depends on where you are. we will see a rapid meltdown. you'll still have the snow on the roads. everybody wakes up to sunshine here tomorrow. this is a brief intermission to our abdomensly warm february that we're having, we have more warm february stuff on the way, we have to get tonight's snow out of the way. the storm is moving faster, i

would expect this snow to shut down very quickly, after 11:00, it may be even during the 11:00 hour, i'm being conservative here in saying 1:00 a.m., it could be faster than that, the worst travel will be north and west of the city by so far. it was cooler today. mainly melting in the city, i would be surprised if any of the streets become slush covered here, the streets will remain wet. areas like grassy surfaces, your car tops, you may have to clean that off. a huge variety of conditions, depending on where you are right now, in allentown, this is one of the spots tomorrow, where you may need to take the shovel. it's going to be a heavy, wet sopy snow, if you're not in good physical condition, you may want to have a neighbor do it for you or a friend. give them a call, it will not be an easy exercise to get that out of your drive way or off your sidewalk. down the shore, just rain for you. the rain snow line is right along the coast.

it's snow, but it's rain here based on the latest observations. inland it's snow, and we have heavier snow across south jersey. let's get you the latest on the progression, our models are going to drag that line further to the north. even though it's heavy snow right now in south jersey, i would expect a change over to rain. the heavy snow band will continue to work its way north. live radar right now, we have heavier snow in vineland, right along 322. it looks like the 42 freeway areas getting heavier snow in delaware right now. you're seeing steady to heavy snow at the moment. in our northern and western suburbs, it's steady, persistent, it's not particularly heavy just yet, it will start to ramp up over the next hour or two. what we do is use the visibility as a tool to use -- to show where the heaviest snow is falling, the lower the number, the heavier the snow. lancaster, you're seeing heavier

snow. reading, 1/8 of a mile for you. half a mile in pottstown. visibility drops across south jersey. temperatures in philadelphia way too warm. notice areas that have below freezing temperatures or at freezing, along the pennsylvania turnpike and north, and a little pocket across south jersey. what am i expecting in terms of the snowfall intensity. it's snowing heavily in northern delaware. look at the rain/snow line inching northward. keeping with the heavy snow in philadelphia. by 10:00, it's starting to wind down a bit. by the time we get into the 11:00 hour, this thing could be shutting down, that's some pretty unbelievable stuff. 3 to 6 inches of heavy wet snow from areas north and west of philadelphia to the lehigh valley. get a look at this ten-day foreca forecast, you don't see this often in february. afternoon sprinkles on monday.

that's the gateway to the warmer weather, record high of 74 on tuesday, some of our warmest weather ever recorded in philadelphia on wednesday there at 78 degrees, and then we'll cool off down into the 50s, still well above normal as we head toward next weekend. let's turn it over to marshall shepherd with some sports. >> thanks, steve. the phillies made one big offseason move, signing carlos santana today, he took the field for the first time, most are resting in the all-star week. joel embiid one of the busiest players this weekend. next time, i want you on my bowling team.
