buildings up in flames and families forced out of their homes. smoke pouring out as firefighters try to determine how the fire started. winter warm-ups. temperatures are soaring into the 70s this week of the and it's official. the pennsylvania native who has been capturing every one's attention on and off the ice at the olympic games has a new job. >> you can see the smoke billowing out. we needed to get out. >> the neighbors spend their sunday watching firefighters put out hot spots after an aggressive fire gets multiple buildings in old city. good evening. this is what the fire looked

like at about 3:00 this morning. smoke and flames coming out of the building near the corner of chestnut and third. not only did neighbors have to run out in the middle of the night but guests staying at the independence park hotel were also evacuated. tonight how neighbors and firefighters are still dealing with this long lasting and aggressive fire, lauren. >> reporter: to give you an idea of how intense this fire was, take a look. they are still putting water on this tonight. both down on the ground floor and up on those upper floors. that is 15 hours after this fire started. disrupting blocks of old city and dozens of lives. in old city, smoke pouring out of the building. the fire sending residents returning to the windows. >> you can see the smoke billowing out. then racing to the streets. >> we grabbed our wallets, our shoes, our dog and ran downstairs. we felt all the smoke going down

the stairs. >> reporter: they got out with their dog rocky. it seemed their building, the one with the yellow window trim was just getting affected by smoke. >> at first they said we could go back in the building that didn't affect us. >> reporter: but they saw firefighters shooting water into the broken windows of the building and smoke streamed out. the bottom floor where the fire started, at one point housed a diner and residents say has been closed a month. residents say that and nearby buildings displaced. some of them getting shelter in the war museum through the night. by midday, the scene still covering most of the block and more than 40 fire apparatus on scene for hot spots in a fire that had challenges for firefighters dealing with connected buildings. >> they found heavy fire from the first companies from the first and second floor. they had to pull out because the volume of fire was just tremendous, as you can see.

we tried to cut it off. and put the fire out. >> as the firefighters work, residents wait. >> we hope for the best but we're expecting the worst. >> reporter: no word on the cause of the fire and no word on just the extent of damage here. fire crews won't know that until they can get inside. and it is unclear when that will be. i can tell you the good news. no injuries here. but from firefighters or residents. however, there were a number of animals killed. both birds and cats. live in old city. first told you about two fridays ago. contaminated water continues to be a problem for the residents of sussex counties. officials are urging them to use other sources of water. the national guard is handing out drinking water to residents daily. last week officials found contaminants to the public water system. nearly a dozen car windows were smashed this morning in juneiata park. we saw several cars with broken windows and glass in the streets some of the owners taped plastic bags on to the windows. police are in the initial stages of the investigation. what a difference a day makes before the eight inches of snow fell in allentown late yesterday. by this morning, a major melt and this is the start of a winter warm-up that will put us near 80 degrees this week. here's more on the first alert forecast. >> it's weather whip lash.

check out this plane that stopped traffic in california today. you're looking at a single engine cessna as it sat on the freeway. that's with 30 miles south of san jose. the faa said engine problems caused to it make an emergency landing. so far there are no reports of injuries. crews rescued a teenager stuck in a cave in lancaster county. the boy was exploring the wind caves. he fell between some rocks and then became stuck. it took rescue workers 30 minutes just to reach the cave. a team was trapped for several hours before he could be saved.

you will not break it on tuesday and or wednesday. the reason why that cool marine air will come in here. that should prevent record highs from happening along the shoreline. meanwhile, wednesday. 78 degrees in philadelphia. the warmest that we've ever witnessed in the month of february will be 79. so allentown and reading, you'll be breaking records on wednesday. the weather is out of alignment here. 44 right now in philadelphia frooflt in trenton. 38 in millville. we're not to the warm air yet so don't go walking out with shorts and a t-shirt. it will be chilly. we're looking at temperatures continuing to fall. the temperatures in the lower 30s. you definitely need the winter jacket to start your president's day morning. overnight lows, around freezing most spots. in the poconos, they're loving it. they're trying to savor every
