like it in the area today. good morning. more weather records could fall today and more broken tomorrow. nbc 10's pamela osborn is live talking about this warm-up we'll have and let's begin with glen "hurricane" swartz and hard to believe we're using the words 70s here in the middle of february. >> yeah, it is. certainly unusual to get into the 70s. not every part of our area's going to get there and some of you are. and already are pretty close. this is cape may. we're starting to see brightness, especially out over the ocean. and the key to the temperatures today is going to be the sunshine. we're starting to see much better in wilmington and sky getting a little bit brighter and we have low clouds around. as you can see on the satellite picture. but not in much of delaware or south jersey.

those are the places that are getting into the 70s. we still have dense fog in allentown and in redding but the visibility is really improved elsewhere. and the temperatures -- just going crazy in the areas with the sunshine. 65 in dover. 66 in millville. 65 in wildwood. while it's 54 in philadelphia and 46 in allentown. that's a 20-degree contrast. at the same time. and that's the kind of thing that we are going to be seeing over the area today. and these temperatures going up near 70 today. 78 tomorrow. and then by thursday afternoon back down to 38 degrees. that's a 40-degree drop in 24 hours. more about the wild changes and pretty wet period coming up, too. >> thank you, glen. probably hard to find anyone upset of trading a thick, winter

coat for a light coat today. we have live reaction of the big warm-up. hey, pam. >> reporter: hey, you know, it looks and feels like pea soup out here. foggy up in the sky and cloudy and as glen said the warmer weather is on the we and we saw healthy mix of people walking around the city this morning, some still bundled you will in jackets, long sleeves and hoods. others all the way out for the 70-degree weather expecting later today already wearing shorts and short sleeves. while it is an odd start to a warm day, people we spoke to said it's something to look forward to. >> i'm originally from montana and this is actuallily warm for me right now. it's nice to get out and, you know, like spring is coming in the air. people are out and really great. >> how long have you been waiting to wear the short sleeves? >> for weeks. i really enjoy the winter. probably a favorite season and you can never, like, be mad at

change in the seasons, i guess so it's nice. >> reporter: and the pets out here at the parks seem to be enjoying the warmth or the warming temperatures just as much as the people. reporting live, i'm pamela osborn, nbc 10 news. >> thank you. make sure you have the free nbc 10 app on your phone. track the weather in your neighborhood. scary moments for passengers on a septa bus today. it collided around 5:30 this morning. paramedics took 15 passengers to the hospital with bumps and bruises. the driver also went to the hospital. a firefighters and inspectors keeping a close eye on this building here in old city, philadelphia. that's in danger of collapse. 239 chestnut is declared dangerous and must be torn down after sunday's fire. the hotel next door is still closed and people who live in the building have been trying to

find other places to stay. one of the residents is an artist and teacher who lost several cats and his life's work in that sunday morning fire. his friends started a fund-raiser to help out and the response so far is overwhelming. >> i set the first limit at like 5,000 and thought if we could get a down payment for an apartment or something and i mean, every hour it was like $1,000 more and $1,000 more. it's just so -- the outpouring of suppo i what's next, the building's owner is told to take down the fire escape weighing down on the facade and the goal to save the facade if possible. the city says the road classroo. dar haas is a engish teacher. she sat down with kerry sanders. she was teaching in the first classroom that the shooter targeted. >> i remember i was at my desk.

i was grading a sonnet and the boom, boom, boom. i turned to say, turn the lights off because that's part of make our room look like no one's there, make like no one's there to leave us alone and when i turned i saw my student -- i saw him and he was -- he was bleeding. >> she believes the students leading the protest will help guide real change after that massacre last week. here in our area new jersey governor talks about how schools in the state keeping students safe. watch his announcement on the nbc 10 app beginning at 3:30 this afternoon. also, this afternoon, community members will hold a vigil at philadelphia city hall to remember the 17 students and staff members killed in the florida high school massacre. republicans say they will sue when it comes to the new congressional map in pennsylvania. this morning, the national congressional republican committee says it would file

suit as early as tomorrow. meanwhile, president trump pushes republican dos go to court over the map. this morning he tweeted, hope republicans in the great state of pennsylvania challenge the new push congressional map all the way to the supreme court if necessary. your original was correct. don't let the dems take elections away from you to raise taxes and waste money. here's a look at the old map for the philadelphia region. the state supreme court ruled yesterday that lawmakers drew the lines unfairly to benefit republicans. the new map put out by the state supreme court yesterday is based on geography and keeps more counties and communities together. the nonpartisan philadelphia-based group committee of 70 says the new map is a step in the right direction. >> there's a lot of opportunity for confusion and -- but i guess the hope of a court is this is kind of short-term pain to

achieve a longer term gain. >> and that longer term gain being? >> that the districts just make more sense. and that they're more balanced. >> the state gop plans to file a lawsuit in file court to block the new map and that challenge could be filed as early as today. tonight specialists of pennsylvania's public utility commission will answer questions about a new area code implemented next month. the new 445 area code would be used here in philadelphia and parts of bucks, montgomery counties, as well. tonight's meeting begins at 6:00 at the 18th district police station in west philadelphia. delayed again. a new castle county bridge that should have opened before thanksgiving will remain closed for at least another month. del-dot officials confirm the bridge won't be ready until at least sometime in march and the

agency say it is project at least $1 million over budget. that amount could go up since there is still more work that has to be done. after the bridge reopens setbacks delayed the projects several times over the past year. coming up this morning, time for a check on the roads with nbc 10 first alert traffic roertder jessica boyington. >> hey there. 95 is to start the cameras around academy road, northbound said, traffic moving up. construction, losing a lane up ahead and seeing the delays headed northbound. southbound delays that were really heavy earlier this morning are now gone. watching route 38, too. this is custer boulevard. following that old city fire over the weekend, we have closures in the area, too.

president trump throwing his support behind one of the biggest critics and endorsing mitt romney for the senate. he tweeted he's running for the senate from the wonderful state of utah. he will make a great senator and worthy successor to orrin hatch and had my full support and endorsement. romney thanked the president, quite a turnaround for both men. in 2016, you may recall trump said the former massachusetts governor had, quote, choked like

a dog during his failed bid against president obama. while romney called trump a phony who was unfit for office during the gop primary. with the fluctuating temperatures, potholes are popping up everywhere. we saw the casualties at this tire shop in northeast philadelphia. cracked and broken rims, tires damaged beyond repair. the mechanics say this year is worse far more than past couple of years we have seen. >> you go over pothole. the whole tire and wheel hit the ground and then the wheel is pinching the tire. >> i hope that my tire's going to make it but apparently not this time. >> the philadelphia streets department now says it needs your help getting to all of the potholes. dial 311 to report anything. that you might see on the roads there and on the nbc 10 app. find out how to report a pothole in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. well, here's one you probably wouldn't expect.

a 75-year-old california woman is accused of keying her neighbors' cars. san diego police arrested her after a neighbor caught her in the act. cars were getting keyed. the scratches range in size and severity and the damage in the tens of thousands of dollars. >> it's nothing that you would think that someone with her age would do that kind of thing. >> the suspect is in jail now being held on felony vandalism charges. a pennsylvania family without a home after a massive mudslide. heavy rains and melting snow triggered the slow moving and very powerful slide. the mix of dirt, rocks and fallen trees pushed the johnstown home at least ten feet off its foundation. the american red cross and neighbors are now helping the family. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather. >> well, speaking of seeing sunshine, you are going to get into the 70s. seeing clouds, it is a tougher road. this is philadelphia skyline. still the low clouds around. we're going to see record 70s for some. may take until tomorrow in -- from philadelphia northward. much colder on thursday. way colder. and then very wet. thursday, friday, saturday, sunday. here is a close-up of those low clouds. you can see through the philadelphia i-95 corridor. you don't see them in delaware or south jersey. we have some breaks in the clouds, north and west. you can almost see exactly where the line is between the rain and snow. rain and snow? the clouds and the sunshine. this just tends to erode during the afternoon. but it's taking its good old time. all of the big moisture's still way to the west and that's

headed right up into canada. so that's not the issue. the issue is just the low clouds and fog. temperatures in the 50s. despite a southwest wind and where it's calm and snow on the ground, not getting anywhere near the 70s. struggling out of the 50s today. a huge contrast from north to south. and in delaware, there's going to be contrast across the state. it's 54 in greenville, limestone road. and as we head to the south. 59 in odessa. 66 in dover. already. 65 in millsborough. southwest wind means warm at the delaware beaches and chilly at the jersey shore. it's already 70 at pittsburgh. 73 in cincinnati. 63 in chicago. 71. look at the old air, too, on the other side of that.

that's how we get the temperatures crashing. temperatures going into the -- near the 70-degree mark in philadelphia today. well up into the 70s. much better chances setting the record tomorrow. this afternoon, upper 60s to the low 70s. the sunshine increases during the afternoon. we got fog again tomorrow morning and we are starting at like 60 degrees and here we are tomorrow afternoon way into the 70s across much of the area but not the jersey shore. and then here comes a cold front with some rain and watch what happens on thursday. we start off around the 40s. and by afternoon, 30s. so i'm not exaggerating. 78 to 38. 40-degree temperature drop. and the difference between the city and the shore is going to

free dance and she pulled out the computer and pulled up old videos of us little kids and me meeting her for the first time and like we were -- we were wrecks. we were -- it was what we needed, though. >> and maya said she got the skating fever first and look at where it all led them. there to olympic greatness. incredible performances like the one from the shibs sibs lasts a minutes but it takes years of practice and preparation to get to that very moment. nbc went to a premier training center in the country right here in the own backyard to see what it tykes to dominate on the ice. >> reporter: your dream is what? >> go to the olympics. >> reporter: simple enough. right? throw on some skates and hit the ice. well, not so fast. >> i train every day after school. for two to three hours. and ballet, workout. it's really cramming.

>> reporter: and that's six days a week. jordan evans wants a trip to the toad yum in 2022 and he is at the right place. the ice rinks of the university of delaware have been the training grounds for olympians. >> i have seen a lot of skaters come through here and go to olympics, be on the world team. skate internationally. >> reporter: scott gregory also has olympic experience. in the '84 and '88 games. today, he's focused on coaching the next generation of stars. >> so these new skaters that come in, do they realize what it takes? >> no. and i think you want to break them in slowly because, you know, it is a process. >> reporter: jordan is just getting warmed up. his mom? >> i just looked at him. >> reporter: knew. >> i realized that he had found his thing which is pretty

well, right now at 11:30, a live look at camelback ski resort here. pretty busy but this may be the only place where it actually still looks like winter because elsewhere temperatures today and tomorrow are warming up into the 70s. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with what we could be seeing in the way of a record breaking forecast. right? >> yeah. we have temperatures near 70 degrees, delaware and south jersey. further to the north it's a tougher trick and get rid of the clouds and seeing brighter in

the landsdale area north of philadelphia an you saw a little bit of sunshine up in the poconos. we're starting to see more sunshine and you can see just some fair weather clouds right now as the picture updates and so we're getting less and less of the white which is the cloud cover. like look at chester county. just in the last hour. much of delaware, south jersey, already seeing sunshine. the areas that have the fog, they're not going to be getting anywhere near the 70s. allentown and redding still have dense fog so those areas may get into the 50s. that's about it. so way above average but it's nowhere near what they're going to be getting to the south. already 68 degrees in dover. 55 in philadelphia. 47 in allentown. 48 degrees in redding. so there's quite a contrast across the area. in philadelphia, we're going to

seventh grader is in the hospital after shooting himself inside the school. again, this is a live picture from jackson memorial school. you can see police officers there outside the door along with what appears to be a mix of students and parents and faculty members. that boy shot himself inside the restroom in morning. we are working the find out his condition. authorities are not sure if the shooting was accidental or intentional. another question was obviously where did that seventh grader find that weapon that he used to shoot himself? this is a picture live in ohio. we'll continue to foal low this story and keep you updated on the nbc 10 app. time now coming up on 11:35. checking out the other headlines this morning. inspectors are keeping an eye on this old city philadelphia building gutted by fire on sunday. 239 chestnut declared dangerous and must be torn down. the building's owner is told to take down the fire escape but the city hopes to save the

building's facade. 15 passengers are being checked after a bus collided with tractor trail they are morning. the bus driver also went to the hospital for treatment. none of the injuries appeared to be life threatening. and today student who is survived that deadly school shooting in florida last week will channel anger into action. in about two hours to board buses and head to the state capital. then tomorrow they'll hold a rally to put pressure on lawmakers to take action against gun violence. blood stained money and mocking disabled drivers, these are just two of the complaints drivers have filed against new jersey toll collectors. nbc took a look at the public records from the last three years. the top complaint is drivers saying they've been shortchanged. the second is toll collectors using rude or foul language. and third on the list is collectors not paying attention because they're on the phone or they're wearing their headphones. the turnpike authority says the

number of complaints actually been going down over the last few years. well, china is now demanding a harsh punishment for a delaware man that broke off a piece of a statue at the franklin institute. michael was at an ugly sweater party at the museum in december. federal authorities say he snapped a selfie and then broke off a piece of the warrior's thumb and put it in his pocket. the statue was on loan from china and is worth, get this, $4.5 million. a chinese newspaper reports officials want the 24-year-old to be harshly punished and demanding compensation for the damage to that statue. happening right now on temple university's campus, engineering students are showing off skills. they created a formula 1 racing car and in the process of building another. in just a few minutes they'll be driving this car through the heart of temple's main campus for engineers week and it can go

from 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds. not bad. the next focus for the team will be to build another race car to enter into a competition in may and compete against students from 120 universities from all across the world in categories related to function, performance and design. last year they placed 39th in design. this time around they hope to do even better. >> our kids design everything and make everything. and there's a big difference with what happens here and what happens at other colleges where the work, the designs are thrown over the wall to professional machinists. our kids make everything here which is really spectacular and do a great job. >> by the time they finish the race car in april they will have put hundreds of man hours into building that race car. jury duties something most doesn'ts have to face and what happens when a minor gets a summons? luke fox and his family recently found out. the 11-year-old from westchester

got a summons in the mail last sunday. 18 is the legal age for jury service. luke says the courts were missing a key piece of information that resulted in one big mix-up. >> the reason why i was summoned was because they had new lists for selecting the jurors and one -- and they didn't have birthdays for all of them. >> luke's mom was able to get to the bottom of the mix-up and he is cleared from showing up for jury duty. luke says he can't wait until he's 18 so he can actually serve legally. last night's do or die win has the usa's men's hockey team a step closer to gold. they move on to the quarterfinals and face the czech republic. here's last night's action. team usa scored more goals in this game than the rest of the tournament winning, 5-1.

here, a big anniversary. you're going to have a big party. >> yes. so two big events this week. actually on thursday, the formal anniversary day, it is 1893 day in the market and the first ribbon cutting for the redding terminal which never had a proper ribbon cutting 125 years ago and then all day long we'll do our best to take people back to what it may have felt like when the market opened. and then on saturday night we have the biggest event of the year, a party for the market. it is our annual fund-raiser, raising half the capital budget to maintain the old building and a night where 40 of our merchants plus have food, we have five bars set up, three dance areas, bands. legal casino gaming area. silent auction. a wonderful night. >> making sure that building remains relevant and special, how intentional do you have to be even though you're not bringing in big chains? mom and pop owned and operated

weather. >> well, some of you have fog around, we have got places getting more and more sunshine by the minute. king of prussia and that's a lot of blue in the sky. that's a live picture and it didn't look like an hour ago. we showed you the picture. wilmington at the beginning of the program. a lot brighter right now and the sunshine area's increasing. white is cloud cover. right along the delaware river pretty much and another area up with toward the lehigh valley, burkes county, those areas not likely to get to near 70 degrees but the places with sunshine have a much better chance. this area of moisture is just going to hang out here for a couple of days but eventually it's coming our way. and once it does it's going to hang around here for a while. now, we are getting up close to 60 and the suburbs, where we're seeing sunshine. little cooler in philly with the

overcast conditions. and still kind of cool in the lee high valley. we'll show you some of these temperatures just to give you an idea. the burkes county, lehigh valley, only 49. white hall 48. that's fairly chilly. those areas lucky to bet into the 50s. in south jersey we already have 70 degrees in bridgeton. 67 in millville. but it's only 56 in cinnamonson and what a difference across the area. this is what neighborhood weather's about here. 57 hopewell township and now look toward the jersey shore see what that 40-degree ocean can do. 59 in atlantic city. 71 in mays landing. 52 in cape may. really depends on the wind and
