her silver medal. for the u.s. as a hard-fought win. it all came down to a dramatic shootout. the arch rivals trading shot after shot, tied after five rounds. then finally usa's jocelyne lamoureux scored with some fancy stick work. >> great move, great hands, great deception. >> reporter: canada's last hope. >> megan augusta. she scored earlier. must beat rooney. she is stopped! the united states wins gold in pyeongchang! >> reporter: a huge save by american goalie maddie rooney. the u.s. women's team euphoric, embracing each other on the ice. it was a hard-fought win. after the first period, the u.s. was on top 1-0 after hilary knight scored on a power play. >> hilary knight setting up in

front. >> we want to put the pucks in the back of the net and it always feels good to do that. >> reporter: but the u.s. struggled in the second half. >> scored on the deflection. she ties the game. >> reporter: haley irwin raising the stakes, tying the game 1-1. >> she scores. 2-1 canada. >> reporter: then just minutes later, canada's captain, marie felipe puland scored again. >> we endured so much, we persevered so much so there's so much character on our team. >> reporter: they did just that, monique lamoureux tying the game 2-2. then 20 minutes of nail-biting overtime. >> the next team to score wins the gold medal. >> reporter: neither team able to put the puck in the net, forcing that epic shootout. the u.s. women's hockey team hasn't won gold since 1998 when

the sport debuted in nagano. they came close in sochi, but an overtime loss to the canadians left them heartbroken. last night's incredible win sparked joy for american fans watching in the arena. >> we got the gold medal! >> reporter: in a little bit of karmaic timing, today marks 38 years to the day that the u.s. men's team beat the soviet union in the little game we like to call miracle on ice. guys, back to you and that awesome team. >> all right, you guys, the golden girls are here. they are fresh off their big win. >> congratulations. >> ladies! all right, maddie, or as i like to say rooney, rooney, rooney. maddie, you had the save of your life. i went up and saw your mom and dad who were up in the seats and they were -- you were sitting there, you had that -- you had to have that one save. you said something to yourself, i thought, before she came at you.

what were you saying before that last shot? >> i kind of just was looking over at the bench and seeing all of them point at me just saying one more and we're gold medalists. >> one more. >> was the whole thing a blur, that last shot? >> it was totally a blur. after the celebration and everyone sprinting at me, it was an undescribable feeling. >> and the lamoureux twins, you each got a gold, one for each of you. what was the experience like? >> it's amazing, obviously. jocelyn and i have a unique journey but to do this with these 22 other teammates, it honestly just leaves me speechless. the way we won i feel bad for our parents. >> it was definitely heartstopping. hilary, you said when you were 5 years old and told your grandma i'm going to go to the olympics and i'm going to win a gold medal, just tell us what this feels like right here today. >> this is a dream come true.

top. coming up today here in pyeongchang, figure skating wraps up with the ladies free skate and medals will be handed out in the women's ski cross. come on, team usa, and that's coming from the british guy. >> of course we'll have a lot more on the olympics in a bit but there is a lot more to get to, including the emotional debate over guns in america. the president and other politicians being pushed to toughen laws by students and parents who have experienced the pain of gun violence firsthand. nbc's kristen welker is at the white house with more on this. hey, kristen, good morning. >> reporter: hi, hoda, good morning to you. school safety is again the focus here at the white house. the president will meet with state and local officials today to get their ideas about how to tackle the crisis of mass shootings. it follows a day of pain and protests here at the white house and all across the country with students, teachers and parents calling for change. overnight, the outrage intensifying after last week's deadly school shooting.

in florida late wednesday, students and parents demanding answers from lawmakers in a cnn town hall. fred guttenberg lost his 14-year-old daughter, jamie. >> your comments this week and those of our president have been pathetically weak. look at me and tell me guns were the factor in the hunting of our kids. >> i absolutely believe that in this country if you are 18 years of age, you should not be able to buy a rifle and i will support a law that takes that right away. >> senator rubio, can you tell me right now that you will not accept a single donation from the nra in the future? >> that is the wrong way to look -- first of all, the answer is people buy into my agenda. >> reporter: a spokeswoman for the national rifle association also taking part. >> this individual was nuts and i nor the millions of people that i represent as a part of this organization that i'm here

speaking for, none of us support people who are crazy, who are a danger to themselves, who are a danger to others, getting their hands on a firearm. >> reporter: earlier wednesday at the white house, more painful pleas to president trump directly. andrew pollack's daughter, meadow, was among the 17 killed in florida. >> there should have been one school shooting and we should have fixed it. and i'm pissed because it's my daughter i'm not going to see again. >> reporter: students, parents and teachers demanding change, not just on gun laws butn making school safer, even discussing the controversial idea of arming teachers. >> and we're going to be looking at it very strongly. >> reporter: the president with a list of notes in hand, including one reading "i hear you" listened intent tly. >> how do we not stop this after columbine, after sandy hook? >> reporter: meanwhile, some students protestedca tol and wh.

>> enough is enough. >> reporter: and across the country, school walkouts. in tallahassee, 100 stoneman douglas high school survivors joined by thousands of other students marched on the florida capitol. >> we won't stop. >> reporter: and president trump has indicated he may be open to measured legislative changes, including strengthening background checks and even pushing the age requirement to 21 to buy an ar-15. that's the weapon used by the parkland shooter. when the president floated the proposal of arming teachers on wednesday, there was some strong opposition to that idea in the room. hoda. >> all right, kristen welker at the white house. thank you. also this morning, the tributes are pouring in and memorial plans are being made now for the reverend billy graham. the iconic evangelist died on wednesday at the age of 99.

morgan radford is inside graham's library in charlotte, north carolina. hi, morgan, good morning. >> reporter: hi there, savannah, good morning. we're standing inside billy graham's childhood home. this is where he grew up the son of a dairy farmer. inside these walls he actually had dreams of becoming a famous baseball player before he went on to become the most famous preacher in america. this is also where his body will lie in repose beginning next week as we expect to see thousands come to pray, to lay flowers and ultimately pay their respects. so far here in his hometown of charlotte, people have come by to say, look, when he spoke, you felt it. another man told me yesterday that he had the power to make even a pauper feel like a president, which is telling given that he prayed with and counselled every single president since harry truman. each of those surviving former presidents as well as current president trump and vice president pence have been invited to the private burial ceremony that will be held next

olympians. today, thursday, february 22nd, 2018. >> that is adorable. let's get back to the excitement here at the winter olympics. we just had a dance party with lindsey vonn, it was epic. she came to pyeongchang to compete 16 years after her first winter olympics at salt lake and she has proved she's got it. she took bronze in the downhill and dominated at part of the combined overnight. did not go as well in the slalom but we are so happy to see you and so proud. >> thank you. >> you came through for the u.s. again. congratulations. >> thank you, guys, i appreciate that. >> this is your fourth olympics. i was saying to hoda what i'm loving about this, it seems like your heart is on your sleeve for this entire thing. every time i look up you're crying, you're laughing, you're hugging. you've got all the feels. >> i do. i couldn't even cry today because i was just tapped out. yesterday i cried so much. i thought i was fine after the race and then i got up on the

podium and just was -- i lost it. but it was so amazing. i knew that was probably my last time standing on the olympic podium. my heart hurt, it was just so amazing. >> that's got to be such a tough thing. when i think of lindsey vonn, i think olympian and i think so many people do. we just had the entire ice hockey team mobbing you. they were like oh, my gosh, it's that lindsey vonn. >> that is amazing. >> but that is so much a part of you. i can't picture you not doing it four years from now. >> that's the hard thing. i'm trying to accept it. i mean who knows, maybe my some miracle my knee will feel better. >> you always leave a little wiggle room. and you know my theory, never bet against lindsey. >> i mean who knows what will happen in four years, it's a long time from now. but i'm going to soak it in as if it were my last. maybe it's not. maybe it will be, but i've given it my best shot and i've enjoyed it thoroughly. this has definitely been the most amazing experience for me in all of my olympic experiences because of how amazing the team

has been. not just alpine but as a whole. i feel so connected to everyone. i feel so much a part of it and a part of the olympic spirit. that's why the olympics are so great. it warms your heart and makes you feel good inside, it makes you happy. that's why i'm going to miss it. >> well, you tore it up today on the downhill. i was watching. you were like vintage lindsey. and then yesterday did you like burn your skis? what happened there? >> oh, yeah. >> that's crazy. >> it happened to a couple girls. >> yeah. >> there's kind of an icy patch on the second gate and it happens sometimes, but my skis are done. you know, they're -- they're finished. those are going in the trash can, unfortunately. i think that's why i just didn't have the speed on the bottom part of the course that i normally do. that was the section where i was gaining time on everyone in the training run, so it's unfortunate, but that's a part of the sport, you know. >> along with that bronze medal were the oldest athlete in

this sport to medal. you keep breaking records even now. >> i mean, sure, it's a record, i guess i'll take it. yeah, it's kind of weird. i think for women, you know, we just don't have that longevity in ski racing because it's so hard on the body and because eventually we want to start having kids and you can't compete and have kids at the same time. it just doesn't work. so i don't know, it's crazy to think i'm the oldest alpine medalist. >> when you started, how old were you in salt lake? >> 17. >> 17 years old. >> a baby. >> would you have even believed it if i had said to you then, you'll still be doing this. in 2018 you're going to be in pyeongchang, south korea. >> no, definitely not. i would not have believed you. it's definitely been a much longer and more successful career than i ever could have hoped for so i'm beyond grateful for every opportunity. to be in my fourth olympics, it's just -- it's amazing. i couldn't be happier. >> but you're not like hanging up your skis and putting on your

countries, including every president since harry truman. his eldest son, the reverend franklin graham, is with us now. this is his first interview since his father's passing. reverend graham, as we say good morning to you, sir, we just want to send our heartfelt condolences for the loss of your father. >> thank you so much. i was in dallas, texas, yesterday when i got word that my father had passed away. of course the news came out a few minutes later that billy graham had died. i kind of chuckled because my father said years ago, he said when you hear that billy graham is dead, don't you believe it for a second. he said i'll be more alive than ever before. and he's in the presence of god, so we rejoice and we're thrilled that his suffering is over and he's in god's presence. >> reverend graham, as you think about your father and these last 24 hours, what is your defining image? is it as a father? is it as a preacher?

what are you reflecting on? >> i just -- first of all, he is my dad and i loved him so much, but he was a man of god. the billy graham that the world saw on television or saw on the big screen was the same billy graham that we saw at home. he wasn't two people. he spent his life telling people about heaven, how to get to heaven. he wrote books on heaven. now he's in heaven. and he would want me to tell everybody watching that if you put your faith and trust in god's son, jesus christ, that you can be in heaven too. and so my father is there and he would wish everybody watching will confess their sins and repent and believe on the name of the lord jesus christ. that would be what he would want everyone to know this morning. >> your father had boundless energy over the years. he traveled from continent to continent. but how were the last several years of his life? >> he did very well up until about his 95th birthday. then after his 95th birthday, he

had a few setbacks healthwise. so for the last five years he's been -- he's been at home for the most part and confined to a wheelchair and his bed. but his mind was always clear. he never got foggy, never got where he didn't understand. he just couldn't hear very well, couldn't see. but you could communicate with him. i was with him sunday. i asked him a few questions and he responded to me. so he was mentally still very much alert. >> when you think about it, reverend graham, and you think about the success he had as a preacher and a deliverer of this message, what do you think it was about him and his delivery of the message that was so compelling and reached so many people? >> it was just god. god just for some reason touched my father and used my father -- my father was a very humble person. he never saw himself as a celebrity. he just always saw h

farom mecklenburg county. but god for some reason just touched my father and blessed him. so the successes, he would want everyone to know that it was god that did it and not him. >> the tributes have been pouring in from celebrities to world leaders. how do you think your father would want to be remembered? >> he would want to be remembered as a preacher. i asked him -- when my mother passed away we knew what she wanted on her too mambstone so asked my father, daddy, what do you want on your tombstone? he thought about that and he said, "preacher." so that's what's going to be on his tombstone, "preacher." >> he changed a lot of lives over the decades. reverend franklin graham, again, our condolences but as you said we know you are rejoicing this morning and we're happy to have you with us. thank you. >> thank you.

different days than we expected. but yeah, i mean this is -- this is pretty insane. >> pretty cool. >> do you feel just light at this moment? it's over, you came, you did it. you must be just on cloud nine. >> yeah, yeah. i came into the olympics a multiple medal threat and i knew that but i was also thinking on the plane ride over here, thinking i could literally walk away with nothing too. i could completely choke in every way possible. so to be here sitting with you guys right now and have two medals is really very -- like a relief but also just insane. >> in the super combined you had a lot of pressure on you for that second run. it had to be pretty perfect for you to get on the medal stand. so when you were just getting ready to go down, what was going through your mind then? >> yeah, i mean actually -- i wish i had felt as not in the slalom as good as i felt today. my run wasn't perfect but it was definitely -- it was good. it was good enough to get on the

podium, which is awesome. >> i think it was good. it was silver medal good, okay? >> the combined run, it was good. i'm really excited. >> it's just so fun to see you and see you grow up. i can still remember walking around shopping for souvenirs at the olympics in sochi and you were just about to burst onto the scene. and here you are, now you're an olympic veteran. >> yeah, that's weird. >> right? >> yeah, i don't feel like a veteran at all. >> was it different this time, though? did you feel like that experience in sochi helped you here? >> yeah, for sure. the time that i spent -- i mean in sochi i always -- i felt like if i had -- because i was 0.2 off the podium in the giant slalom and then won the slalom gold. but if i had been on the podium in the giant slalom i probably wouldn't have done as well in the slalom. because of the hype and media, i was not prepared for it. coming here i was like, okay, i'm racing in multiple events. we need to be on point with everything so i can do my best

in each event. now i can talk with you guys. >> you were on point. you packed 35 pairs of skis and i heard that was like a scaled-back version of what you usually pack. >> yeah. >> why so many? >> well, i use probably five pairs of skis per day for training and race days i have five or six pairs available that are all different tuning or different bindings. >> do you have like these are my lucky skis or special socks that you wear? >> i try not to have -- i'm not super superstitious. no, i try not to do that because if i forget the socks or, you know, i wash them on accident -- >> you want to be ready. by the way, it was so fun watching you with the u.s. hockey players. it's fun to watch all the athletes bask in each other's glory so congratulations on everything. we're so proud of you. >> thank you. >> do you have another olympics in you? >> yeah, probably. i'm only 22. >> we hope.

and parents who are demanding action. at the white house, the president heard an emotional plea from school shooting survivors. nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson has more for us from washington this morning. hi, hallie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. expect these conversations to continue today on the gun debate because the president is hosting officials on the state and local level to talk about this. as we saw again overnight, these are conversations that are intense, they are emotional, and at times very heated. overnight after days of student protesters making their case in the gun debate, the nra making its own. >> this individual was nuts, and i nor the millions of people that i represent as a part of this organization that i'm here speaking for, none of us support people who are crazy, who are a danger to themselves, who are a danger to others getting their hands on a firearm. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the powerful gun rights group appearing at a cnn town hall in

florida. it turned tense at times. at one point republican senator marco rubio in a heated exchange with survivors and parents of victims. >> your comments this week and those of our president have been pathetically weak. >> let me explain what i said this week and i'll repeat it. i'm saying that the problems that we're facing here today cannot be solved by gun laws alone. >> senator rubio, can you tell me right now that you will not accept a single donation from the nra in the future? >> the answer to the question is that people buy into my agenda, and i do support the second amendment and also support the right of you and everyone here to be able to go to school and be safe. >> reporter: further north in washington, the president facing families, clearly anguished and angry. >> and i'm pissed! it's my daughter i'm not going to see again. she's not here. king david cemetery, that's where i go to see my kid now. >> reporter: andrewparkland sho >> 9/11 happened once and they fixed everything. how many schools, how many

>> the big jumping pass, triple flip, triple toe. >> in the short program yevgenia pulled off a flawless performance with her signature combination of power and artistry. she set a record with her score. up came alina, who has the hardest combination of the competition. >> so difficult going off the edge. after that triple lutz, very solid. >> she nailed it, breaking the record her teammate set just minutes before. >> is it fair to say that right now alina is in yevgenia's head? >> yes, that's very fair to say. when i first saw yevgenia, i thought she doesn't miss, she doesn't make a mistake, she's perfect. what i didn't anticipate was that next was perfecter. you know? >> in women's figure skating, russia only has one olympic gold, won at the sochi games. they are expected to add another one here.

actually has been progressing the sport insanely in the last few years, so to see her win today, like of course a teeny tiny part of me had wished i landed my last run, but in the big picture i was just so happy. you've got to spread that love. you can't win it all. you've got to balance out the gold, have a little silver. >> it's like the yin and the yang of the silver and the gold. >> exactly. >> you never seem stressed. here you are, at the absolute top of your game. you're a competitor. but you always seem so zen. >> yeah, chill. >> what's your secret? >> i guess just a lot of practice, because sometimes i'm pretty anxious and stressed. but it just feels awful. like i want to feel good, life's too short. so i just listen to good music, i use a lot of, like, essential oils and i'm always drinking my tea with my organic gee in it,

welcome back to pyeongchang. we are joined by one of the women responsible for one of the most unforgettable moments of the winter olympics. >> kikkan randall and her teammate, jessie diggins, won an historic gold in the cross-country team sprint, the country's first gold and

first-ever medal by an american woman in that sport. guess who is sitting next to us? kikkan, congratulations. >> congrats. >> thank you. >> our hearts can't take this, okay. that photo finish at the end. you were there watching your teammate cross. what was that emotional moment like? >> well, i had just skied a three-minute lap as hard as i possibly could so my legs were so full of lactic acid i could barely stand. i'm there next to the swedish girl and we're watching our teammates come down and we were screaming. i think i got an octave higher than she did but it was so close to call that i had to look at the scoreboard and see usa number one and i ran out and tackled jessie. >> jessie would be right here with you but she's got another race and has to rest up. there's so much history, never a gold medal in cross-country. >> never. >> no medal since the '70s. >> yeah. >> a silver medal back then. is all that history weighing on

you, or are you just kind of like we're doing the race in front of us? >> i think that history has motivated us. when i was a teenager and first getting involved in cross-country skiing, i thought it was so cool that here was a sport that no american woman had won an olympic medal. history was waiting to be written. i felt like if i worked at it hard enough and long enough, i would do it. i didn't think it would take five olympics. it's been a long journey. when we came into the race yesterday, what worked well for us at the world championships was to go out, execute our plan, each fill our role. we knew if we did that, we could put together a great race and it ended up being gold. >> you're setting an example for so many people. in addition to being an incredible world class athlete, you're also a mom with a little boy named breck. how old? >> he's going to be 2 in april. >> can we show you a tiny little clip? take a look. >> good morning, mommy. i just woke up, but i want to congratulate you. you had a great race. i saw it on tv.
