right now at 5:00, tunnel terror, the equipment collapse that killed a delivery driver on a busy interstate and what engineers are saying about its safety. soggy stretch, tracking days of rain right through the weekend. snoop dogg and mvp, he he drops a new track featuring the ooeagles quarterback. we'll have those stories, but first at 5:00, blind sided by a deadly bullet. video shows the moments after a woman was shot as she was driving her van. the victim's precious cargo, her twin sister and children under 4 years old were in that van.

they witnessed the horror. her family now struggling to come to terms with the pain of losing a loved one. >> never felt this pain ever before. i hope no one has to fwo through this. . >> police december rsperate to did this and their motive. we are working on this story. since last night. >> aundrea cline-thomas joins us live near the scene of that crash with more on the search for the suspect. >> reporter: well, guys, police are looking for two men. i want to show you something. that shooting happened in front of the cricket store. the van hopped across all lanes before crashing into a business not far from where i'm standing. take a look at the top right corner of your screen. surveillance video shows a van veering across multiple lanes and crash iing into the human services building in the 5800

block of old york road. the two suspects fired two shots into the van at broad and grain streets killing the 23-year-old driver. family identified the victim. >> definitely indescribable. never felt this pain ever before. i hope no one has to go through this. definitely something i can't put into words. >> reporter: his twin sister was in the van with small children. >> the victims appear to be innocent parties. >> reporter: today crews boarded up the broken door at human services. down the street there's a bullet hole in the window of the cricket store. this incident was just too close for henry. >> your life is very valuable. >> reporter: police returned to the scene looking for clues that helped track down the suspect. >> this is just mysterious. >> we know there's even more surveillance video that's been

turned over for police. hopefully it helps detectives track down some clues. reporting live, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. we'll continue to follow that story. but right now, first alert weather tracking relentless rain across our area. >> you can see the showers on first alert radar that are setting us up for a soggy stretch. the rain has been with us all day long. these people were doing their best to stay dry as they walked along chestnut in center city. taking a live look right now along the schuylkill expressway at the presidential city apartments. gray skies out there in the headlights. tammie souza is tracking this rain. >> it's going to stick with us through the weekend. we'll see periods of rain, the heaviest coming unfortunately over the weekend. but let's go right to radar. doppler radar showing that philadelphia still has showers in parts of south jersey. much of delaware is dry.

we're going to see these bands of showers make their way through the area. some of this is going to let up overnight we're dpoing to get a break. you can see the break in the action. there's a whole lot more off to the south and the west of us. there's a whole other storm system that's stirring up out there that's going to be coming through here. so let's go ahead and walk you through hour by hour what's going to go on. the winds are out of the northeast keeping us very chilly. we're right around 40 degrees right now. we're going to continue to see these showers taper off. temperatures are going to fall. by president time you wake up in the morning, we're going to be in the 30s. we're going to be looking at more showers making their way through the area. up here near the poconos, i don't think it will be the lehigh valley. but the poconos, the air near the ground may be cold enough and get some freezing. the rest of us are going to see some shower activity. so you wake up in the upper 30s. you will see maybe a rain shower with clouds out there. pennsylvania suburbs, 37. 34 in the lehigh valley.

just above freezing. 39 in new jersey. 41 along the jersey shore. we'll talk about the weekend forecast when i come back in a few minutes. president trump appears to be doubling down on this call to arm more teachers with gun. s to try to prevent school shootings. >> he promised to turn tack into action as more local students ral lid against gun violence. lauren mayk is joining us with more on the president's proposals. >> the president is getting specific about what he wants and what he doesn't want. the question is whether or not lawmakers will agree. all of this coming as young people are demanding something be. done to keep students and others safe from gun violence. >> they held signs to mark mass shootings across the country. and spent 497 seconds in silence to remember the victims. but the demonstration was really about speaking up. >> we decided we couldn't wait

anymore. >> reporter: student joining young people across the country demanding something change after the deadly shooting in parkland, florida. >> this is all that anyone is talking about. the demonstration here in philadelphia happening as washington sorts out what change might look like. >> we have to harden our schools, not soften them up. >> reporter: president trump met with state and local officials from around the country today. >> we're going to use strong background chex. we're going to work on getting the age up to 21 instead of 18. we're getting rid of the bump stocks. and we're going to be focusing very r strongly on mental health. >> reporter: the president said he doesn't like active shooter drills, but does like the idea of gun adept teachers and coaches that could carry concealed weapons in it schools. >> that's a fairly rigorous course in what they are doing. they should be paid, tra money. >> the idea though doesn't sit well with this mom. part of moms demand action. >> we shouldn't expect teachers

be on board with raising the legal age for gun purchases from 18 to 21, but the nra objected to that and repeated its suggestion we heard before to stop a bad guy, it takes a good guy with a gun. it generated a lot of response with the majority saying no. you can join this conversation ob our nbc 10 philadelphia facebook page. a worker is dead after his front-lend loader plunged into the water in delaware. it happened around 10:30 this mork. you can see it there partially submerged in the delaware river. authorities later found truck driver's body in the water. they say he was 52 years old but have not released his name. a south jersey family is without their home after this fire. sky force 10 over the scene along ivy lane shortly after 7:00 this morning. you can see the entire house

heavily damaged there. investigators try iing to figur out what started the fire. new details in the case of a former commissioner awaiting trial in a child pornography case. he's now facing federal charges as well. police arrested him back in october. he use d screen names like dadd x to visit chat rooms. he shared images of child porn ogty in those rooms. he resigned from the board of commission commissioners. reverend billy graham will lie in honor at the u.s. capital rotunda. he tied at the age of 99. the man known as the pastor to the presidents will lie at the capital from next wednesday until thursday. a private funeral will be held that friday. reverend graham served as an adviser to 12 consecutive u.s. presidents. today philadelphia staple to the trip back in time to celebrate a milestone.

now to an exclusive. a gift of chock will thes delivered to a man's door opened the door for thooefs to take advantage of him. police say the thieves sent the gift to a man with special needs and then used him to store and sell their stolen goods. >> as deanna durante found out, how police discovered the whole thing. >> reporter: the a first it looked like the contents of the store from high end gift baskets to watches and jewelry. but now it's all evidence. police say the scam artists were able to gain the trust of an unsuspecting man. at first, by sending him chocolates and all he had to do was allow boxes to be shipped to his house. >> then they asked him to take merchandise, whether it was jewelry, electronics, to a pawnshop and turn that in for cash. then send the cash back to them. >> reporter: police say the money was converted to bitcoin and once that happened -- >> to track that money it gets

very complex. it's rare that we're able to catch these criminals. >> reporter: investigators say this man was an easy tafrgt. the problem is he wasn't selling the stuff fast enough. how did police find out about this in the first place? when the victim wasn't sending the money to the thieves, those thieves then contacted the victim's family and started threatening them. >> told the family member know where you live and where your brother lives. >> reporter: police showed us the messages in which the lives of the victim and the family were threatened and they say this is one of many cases that serve as a warning. >> i think the best defense here is calling the police immediately. >> reporter: investigators want to find out where this stuff and other items really belong and say if you have a vulnerable family member or neighbor, check in with them. make sure they know if items show up it could be a scam. deanna durante, nbc 10 news.

tois r us is denying a report it could be forced to dpo out of business. a cnbc report found tois r us are in violation of -- the north jersey based company announced it was closing 20% of its locations, four of those stores in our area. cherry hill and burlington in south enginejersey and exton in pennsylvania. a job fair for philadelphia's brand new project rolls on. we first told you about the new market west last week. there are more than 100 jobs available. the hiring manager says even though the project is still two years away, a lot of the jobs start right thousand. >> flood waters are washing over the pittsburgh area and more wet weather is in the forecast. this morning more than ab inch of rain fell a ed iing to the already soggy conditions. homes have been damaged and landslides and roads are closed. showers are expected to continue

right through the weekend. closer to home, we're not seeing any flooding, but our weather team is tracking showers tonight. the rab is going to roll right through your weekend. >> that rain has been coming down steady all day long. >> nothing like yesterday. it really was a shock to the system waking up and gone are the 70s. gone is the sunshine. but let's take a look at allentown. you can see the cloudy skies out there. we have seen a few rain drops on the lens. at this point we're looking at a wet weekend. we're going to see some rain showers tonight and tomorrow. and i think the heaviest rain is saturday night and into sunday. we'll be. near 60 on sunday. so at least there's some sort of glimmer of saving grace there. and we're going to have a dry start next week. we are going to be looking at nice seasonal conditions. warmer than average. no 70s. let's look at the rain on the radar. you can see it just sort of trailing through the area. we have some stronger showers, maybe even isolated thunderstorms near d.c. moving

toward baltimore. all of this is going to make its way through the area. a will the of sagging down through south jersey and delaware. there's snow to the north across parts of new york. none of that for us. if we look further to the west, you can see another storm system that's revving up and it's going to move in our direction as well. so we're not done yet. we have days of this ahead of us. let's wake you through the hour by hour. northeast winds kept us cool today. right around 40 right now. and we're going to drop into the 30s overnight. cold enough in the poconos. below freezing that we could see freezing rain there. i'm not expecting to see it in the lehigh valley. the suburbs will stay warm and the air mass above the ground needs to support freezing rain. that stays above freezing as well. here we are tomorrow evening. only into the 40s scattered showers and then here we go into saturday. a few showers. temperatures into the mid-50s. we still have a north wind, but watch what happens. we get heavy rain coming in overnight and into the first half of your sunday. maybe even some thunderstorms associated with this.

we'll be in the 40s to start sunday morning. but as this clears out, we're going to see the winds starting to push in from the south. this is that front lifting northward. and we're going to see temperatures that are going to make it into the 60s even in philadelphia. but we're at this point early afternoon, you can see 40s in al lentown. 64 in millville. the front is bisecting the area. how much rain are we looking at? a couple inches in the poconos. maybe an inch or more in philadelphia. and an inch or so along the jersey shore. so this is going to be a good soaking. this is the amount we're going to expect between now and by the time that we get into late on sunday. 38 right now in landon. temperatures are dropping quickly. but again. i don't think this is where we're going to see the freeze ing rain. not worrying about freezing rain here in philadelphia. 42 in graduate hospital. and we're look at 42 in bustleton. let's look at your ten-day. we're going to be watching temperatures that will be in the

40s tomorrow. but 50s for saturday. 60 on sunday. and then we dry out for the beginning of next week. don't put the snow shovel away. the end of next week looks interesting with a wintery mix, possibly some snow. it's a crash that's leaving pennsylvania turnpike workers stunned. >> in the nearly two decades i have been here, i have never seen an incident like this. >> what fell from the roof of the lehigh value tunnel that left this hole in a driver's windshield killing him. plus why turnpike officials are resisting the tunnel is safe u tonight. and turned eagles center, the high school visit that exposed a hidden talent today. that's next.

this weekend the mummers will strut their stuff down main street at the fifth annual mardi gras parade. the family-friendly event is is at 1:00 on sunday. weather permitting. 16 mummers string bands will perform. 15,000 people showed up for the parade last year. this year organizers are expecting an even bigger crowd. you probably know jason kelsey as the guy with the fiery speech and flashy attire at the super bowl parade. >> today we learned the birds center has a hidden talent. super bowl champ took in a few tunes from some talented kids today. nbc 10 at central high where the school's band was performing with the band from cleveland heights high school.

kelsey is a graduate of cleveland heights and the center played the sax with the band in high school. >> it's actually kind of a cool moment seeing all those kids go and play and thinking not too long ago i was one of those kids and how everything transpired to where i am today. it's pretty awesome to recap all that. >> he sported his old high school jacket right there. today's performance is part of an exchange program between high school music departments in philadelphia and cleveland. nice out that all came together. >> he should have pick ed it up. next at 5:00, hollywood comes to atlantic city. >> what show is using the jersey shore town as a backdrop and how long it might disrupt drivers. a local family is living through a really tough time. twin babies in the hospital. but the 4-year-old brother might just be the heroes the babies need. i'm tim furlong. i'll have that story, straight ahead.

thousands of drivers go through it every day. the lehigh tunnel on the noex extension. >> a freak accident killed a man who was driving along doing his job. hours ago the southbound tube of the tunnel reopened to traffic. last night around 6:00 a piece of electrical equipment fell through a truck er's windshield hitting and killing had him immediately. that trucker was 70-year-old howard sexton from gloucester county. he was planning to retire this summer and even though the accident happened in the tunnel, no one else was hurt. >> steven fisher has more on what happened and more about the man killed. >> reporter: while driving through the southbound lane of the tunnel yesterday, police say 70-year-old howard sexton of new jersey was hit in the head when a piece of an electrical continue wit fell from the ceiling of the tunnel and

smashed through his tractor-trailer windshield. >> two decades i have been here, i have never seen an incident like this. >> reporter: if you look close, you can see at the top of the windshield there's a hole where the metal broke through. the turnpike says not every tunnel has that equipment hanging above the roadway. >> it's a part of the tunnel that functions in the tunnel. and again. that certainly was one of the things our engineering team was look iing at today. folks are trying to focus on what may have led to or caused this incident. >> the tunnel is inspected every other year. the last was in september of 2016. >> when it comes to that 2016. inspection, i'm not aware of any issues brought to light. >> the police are investigating causing the tunnel to be shut down after the accident for nearly 20 hours. >> it was certainly a freak accident. as far as the tunnels are concerned, the turnpike wouldn't

be operating if we didn't think they were safe. >> reporter: it was around 2:30 today when the southbound tunnel finally reopened after the investigation wrapped up. again the, the turnpike insists the tunnels are safe. otherwise they would not be open. reporting live, steven fisher, nbc 10 news. turning now to first alert weather from record warmth to temperatures in the high 70s and 80s to a soggy stretch that's going to wash out most of your weekend. take a look at the radar and that big green blob that's hanging over the region. >> and wet weather is only half the weather story. what a temperature drop we're feeling today. a live look at al lentown. the high yesterday was 81 degrees here. now it's 38. meteorologist tammie souza told us this was going to happen. >> incredible difference. >> 43 degrees, that does make a big difference. that's a difference between the flip-flops and the winter coat.

this is winter. we're still in february. so reality check for all of us. the doppler radar, we have these showers. you can see them leaning through the area beginning to clear out of philadelphia and head ed through south jersey and into delaware. we have a line of heavier showers and a few thunderstorms through d.c. we're going to continue to see these periods of showers and thunderstorms making their way through the area. you can see snow to the north across new york move iing into boston. we're not dealing with that. the pink is freeszing rain, which has been through the area's north of the poconos. although tomorrow morning the poconos could see light freezing rain. we have another system that's forming to the west. i'm going to run you through what's going to happen over the next day. we have the system that's going to make its way through tonight. and we're going to deal with scattered showers. it looks like a lot more rain than it is. then we get into sunday when we see some very heavy rain that's going to be making its way

through the area u. but it's what's behind that that we have to be concerned about for next week. we'll talk about that and the temperatures for your weekend when i come back in a couple minutes. tonight a chester county father is accused of getting so upset about a video game that he threw his 5-month-old daughter in the game and didn't catch her. the da said he admitted to then shaking the little girl for a minute. a few days later she died. he's now charged with murder. a fiery underground explosion rocked old city this morning. sky force 10 was over the spot where three manhole covers were blown out of the ground. this happened just after 9:00. fire officials say they were able to get the fire under control quickly. but what caused it that's still under investigation. no one was hurt. a mobile mammogram clinic is on the chopping block under delaware governor carney's proposed budget. his spending plan recommends

eliminating state funding for the breast cancer coalition ma'am momography van. it's been become obsolete. two state troopers help prevent a boston marathon type bombing at the jersey shore and they were named troopers of the year. the two detectives were honored today in west trenton. they successfully deactivated two live improvised explosive devices in a garbage bin in 2016. the bombs were supposed to go off during the marine corps charity race. the suspect was recently sentenced to life in prison. the united states scores!

praek news in the investigation of the florida school shooting. the sheriffs now confirming there was an armed deputy at the school, but that deputy stayed outside for four minutes while the shooting was going on inside. that deputy has now resigned. meanwhile hundreds have gathered to pay tribute to a hero football coach gunned down in last week's high school massacre in parkland, florida.

>> he was remembered during an emotional funeral service today. he was one of the 17 people killed by that gunman at the high school in parkland. witnesses say the death toll would have been higher had he not draped himself over students and acted as a human shield. >> when he was brought home by the lord, i can tell you this. the lord stared him right in the face and he had two words to say to him. well done, well done. >> he was a security guard as well as a security monitor. he graduated from that school and played football there as well during his own high school years. now here's a look at the stories making headlines county by county across the region. in new castle county, police say rescue crews pulled a driver out of his crashed car with a beer bottle in his hand. newark police responded when a

car hit a pole this morning. the driver was trapped and not awake. e crews managed to pull him out still holding that beer. the man was charged with dui. hollywood was responsible for a detour in atlantic county can today. the new drama "succession" was filming in the tunnel that connects atlantic city. the northbound section of the tunnel and one southbound lane was closed for much of the day. it will debut in june. in west moreland county a sleep walking student caused a school to close. a 7th grader called 911 at 2:30 from inside the middle school. he said he woke up there. police say he climbed through a window it get into the building while sleep walking. also the school is four miles from his house. administrators cancelled classes to make sure everything was safe. a super bowl ring is pretty cool, but you know you made it when your name is in a song.

>> we're make iing it. >> mine isn't as fun. i'm tammie drizzle. love it. let's take a look at the numbers. we picked up some rain in philadelphia today. but a third of an inch in allentown. >> we are going to see periods of rain moving through the area over the next three days. the numbers, it was 81 in ro noek last hour. so 51 that was in d.c. that's a 30 degree difference. you can tell where the front has set up. it's moved through the area. 39 in coatesville. we're look iing at 8. so temperatures are chilly compared to yesterday.

40 in dover. 36 in trenton. 39 in stone harbor. 34 in allentown. now that's key if you stay above freezing pause we could see treezing rain. i don't think it drifts into the lehigh valley because the air stays too warm to support it. we are looking at showers that are sag u through south jersey and into delaware. we'll continue to see the line move out. the snow stay to the north what we're watching to the west is another system setting up. snow will make its way in our direction for the second half of the weekend. we say good-bye to this one. we get to the one on sunday. that's heavier rain. here comes more rain on thursday.

police say a man pretending to be a police officer followed two women, took their car and detained them last night. >> investigators say there may be more victims out there. this is 26-year-old eric miller. police say he followed two women from montgomery county to bucks county in his black honda civic before approaching them at a shopping center in west minute ster township. >> a police officer in the county and a u.s. marshal and held them for investigation on what he said was a traffic

infraction. >> he said miller didn't show the women any identification. he told them their car had an expired sticker and e he couldn't let them drive. >> he pats the one down and takes their cell phones and goes through their purses and dumps them out. >> reporter: the complaint goes on to say he grabbed one of the women during that patdown and when she weblt inside a store to call for help, miller himself called 911 asking police for back backup. detectives later determined eric miller is not an officer or a u.s. marshal. and charged him with multiple crimes including kidnapping, stalking and impersonating a public servant. >> there's other victims out there, there's people somewhere in the area or particularly in. bucks county. that may have had contact with this individual or have been stop stopped by this individual and
