rattled the country. the school is in northeast philadelphia and it was placed on lockdown after the gun turned up this morning. >> reporter: miguel, this school has metal detectors. parents haven't always liked them but it changed today. >> yeah. that's right. police tell us they were able to find that loaded gun in the student's backpack because of those metal detectors. parents i spoke to tell me those are very necessary, especially in today's day and age. >> had they not found the gun somebody could have really got hurt today. >> reporter: this is the loaded gun the high school police found in a 15-year-old student's backpack this morning. police say the student ran his bag through detectors. officials saw something suspicious and took the bag and called police. >> you want to send your kids to school and think they're safe. you find out somebody brought a gun to school, it's scary. >> reporter: police say he confessed to bringing the gun but don't know why.

>> he must have gotten in somebody's car and took the bag. >> some schools have the wands and wand the children and some schools have scanners and many schools have police officers present. >> metal detectors in school shouldn't have to be but i think it's necessary. >> unfortunately we need it in schools because of incidents like that. if you don't have those type of devices it could have been a worse situation. >> reporter: police are asking parents to talk to their kids about the consequences of bringing any kind of weapon to school and reporting anything they find suspicious. this 15-year-old from today's incident could be facing charges for having a gun as a minor and bringing a weapon onto school property. reporting live, me gel martinez, nbc10 news. on a day no doubt difficult for the students at marjorie

stoneman douglas high school in florida, a rainbow greeted them. among the many police cars outside the school. just 12 days ago a gunman opened fire inside the school, killing 17 people. teachers and staff work today and tomorrow and students return wednesday. a miracle survivor of the shooting gave thank yous with tears in her eyes and love in her heart. >> i was sitting on my couch today thinking about all the letters and gifts everyone has given. just like all the love that's been passed around. i definitely wouldn't be here without it. i want to send my love to all of you. >> when first responders first found maddie wilford she was unresponsive and pale from three gunshots to her arm.

she's home and walking. now to breaking news, a police officer one of two people found dead inside a home. this is video from skyforce10 taken within the past hour. nbc10's deanna is live at the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: this is all unfolding in the 2900 block of mercer street. police were called here a little after 12:00 this afternoon. a female police officer was found dead in the home along with another man. you can see a large crowd on the side walk, friends, family, people who apparently knew the woman and man found inside the home. we have seen homicide detectives coming and going here as well as philadelphia's crime scene unit that just left this area as well as the medical examiner on the scene here. both were pronounced dead at

12:30 this afternoon and philadelphia police not telling us the name or rank of the officer or what they think caused the two deaths saying it is a very active investigation. live in port richmond, deanna durante, nbc10 news. days after several school buses were damaged in a fire, students went back to school today in the parkland district of lehigh valley and the school borrowed buses to get them back to school. the fire caused more than $1.5 million in damage. maintenance workers spent the weekend repairing buses that didn't have that severe damage. fighters of opioid addiction got major help. high mark is awarding the state with $325,000 in grant money to help people living with addiction from becoming hooked in the first place.

this is nbc10 news. >> as talk of gun control continues to dominate headlines, president trump vowing to take action. today, he sketched out a few of his ideas at an event with many of the nation's governors. with congress getting back to work after a week off, the path is looking very narrow to gun control. >> many offer their own ideas and even challenging some of president trump's. in florida, a community struggling to recover after the latest school shooting and president trump meeting with the nation's governors. >> bump stocks, we're writing that out. >> the president promising to act on guns if congress won't. he revealed he met over the

weekend with nra leaders. >> don't worry about the nra, they're on our side. half of you are so afraid of the nra, there's nothing to be afraid of. if they're not with you, we have to fight them every once in a while. that's okay. they're doing what they think is right. >> the president rejected this raise the legal age for buying gun but backed the controversial plan to arm teachers. a non-starter for some. >> i talked to some first grade teachers who don't want to be pistol packing first grade teachers. >> reporter: he slammed the deputy that didn't go in. >> you don't know until you're tested but i believe i'd run in even if i didn't have a weapon. >> reporter: the teachers returned for the first time. one father pleaded with lawmakers to forget the idea of arming teachers. >> it will not make our children safer, it would have killed more

kids. >> welcome back, yes! >> reporter: today, teachers returned to the school to prepare for a new normal with classes resuming on wednesday. over the weekend dwrerks -- the weekend, the president talked to house speaker paul ryan and said a bill passed the house and waiting for the senate to pass a bill on guns. a moment of silence was held at 12:18, the exact moment of the terrorist attack. the names of people killed in 1993, including a pregnant woman were read aloud. the lunchtime attack also wounded more than 1,000 people and the blast left a crater 60 feet wide and affected steel reinforcement. and yusef organized the attacks.

former president george w. bush was among the mourners to pay his respects to billy graham this day. as soon as the doors opened this morning, hundreds of people began filing past his casket, handmade by lced state prison inmates. on wednesday the famed evangelist will lie at the state capitol. graham's body was moved 30 some miles from his home to he library. hundreds lined the roadways. >> the gravity the man had and people he touched in his life and all the places he's been and the crowds that he drew. a big tent much like the one billy graham used in the early days of his crusade has been set up for the funeral friday. president trump is expected to attend. that is this sound of huge

boulders tumbling down the side of a mountain during a rockslide in chesapeake, ohio, and some the size of buildings and luckily no people were hurt. capturing this tornado in arkansas, 90 miles an hour winds with debris in the parking lot and caused widespread damage throughout the area, one of several tornadoes confirmed in this area over the weekend. the cleanup is under way after two tornadoes touched down outside nashville. the twin twisters struck saturday night near clarksville winds reaching 120 miles an hour and leveled one home and damaged many more. no reports of injuries. we have seen our share of rain. we are ready for the sunshine. >> none of that, yes, sunshine is welcome.

>> a good reminder when you see that video severe weather season is knocking on the door and could pop up here any time. have your plan, be ready. we're ready for sunshine to go along with warmer than average temperatures. we hit 51 in philadelphia but the clouds made it feel soggy, not like 51 degrees. wilmington still hanging onto the clouds, 51 degrees there. finally, to allentown, west winds at ten miles an hour. temperatures will drop to the 30s with clear skies tonight and we will have a warm-up. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. grab the sunglasses. by wednesday, maybe a few clouds but we will be flirting with 60 degrees. thursday and friday, march begins and comes in like a full-blown lion. we will be using fancy words like bomb a genesis. get ready for that one. it will be intense. periods of heavy flooding and

rain across the coastal area. the tide will be high, quite a mess and it will be quite weekend, the first dry weekend we have seen in over a month. won't that be nice? doppler radar not really picking up rain. delaware to south jersey. a lot of this is not hitting this ground. we have clouds out there but not moist enough for that, moving out rather quickly. and we will have clearing skies. here is our into the week storm that will slide into the coast and intensify and produce very very strong winds, high waves, coastal flooding and potential rain. high 50. look at the skies clear out. tomorrow, you will wake up to low 30s with the west wind and make it to the mid and upper 50s tomorrow in the afternoon.

high clouds moving in wednesday. but we're anywhere between 55 and 60 degrees on wednesday. winds out of the south will keep us mild into thursday despite the fact that the rain moves in thursday and late afternoon. we still move to the 50s. look how long the rain stays with us, thursday and friday and maybe a wintery mix in the lehigh valley. i don't think it will make it into the pennsylvania suburbs, but because we have cold air being brought into the north system offshore friday night, but winds coming out of the north and east and pounding the shoreline. we will being o be in breezy dry conditions over the weekend. let's look at the amount of rain, not a lot at this point. over an inch across the entire area. if we see any thunderstorms, all bets are off and we will see higher amounts. 31 in the lehigh valley.

the penn state litany lion is missing an ear. university police are looking into who damaged the shrine on campus. police say a damage report came around 4:00 this morning. the piece of ear missing from the statute was found nearby. police said it is unclear if the incident is connected to this weekend's saint patty's days festivities. after weeks of colorful celebrations and high adrenaline

in the atlantic ocean, at the jersey shore. today, leaders spoke out against the trump administration proposal. >> they believe it could have catastrophic consequences. ted has the story. >> reporter: the thought of oil washing up on ocean city beaches makes peter shoulder. >> if people couldn't come to the beach they wouldn't go to the city. it would be a disaster. >> reporter: he is the president of the flanders hotel and among those that came to this beachfront conference today. business leaders joined environmental advocates to blast the possibility of offshore drilling. they vehemently propose a trump administration proposal to open waters off the nation's coastline off the eastern seaboard for potential exploration for oil and gas. >> why would we ever want to

wind and rain and back down to where we should be friday and saturday. we will get a couple of days of spectacular weather. we are watching the system move by to the south, maybe a few sprinkles in parts of central delaware and south jersey. more importantly, there's that line of clouds clearing out and we get sunshine tomorrow. there's a huge storm on the west coast. that's not the one we're watching. no. we're watching in the gulf because we will get another storm out of texas that moves across the country out over the ocean and becomes a huge coastal storm that intensifies and undergoes something called bom-a-genesis. we will have a full moon along the week and coastal flooding along the jersey floor and delaware beaches. be aware of that. the rain, thursday and friday. let's watch where we go. we have the west winds, clear out. wake up in the 30s tomorrow morning. clear sky, look at the sunshine make it to the mid-50s, even a

is a crime scene after officers found one of their own dead, along with another person. >> what do we know now? >> reporter: at this point the scene has been cleared by police, the street back open. the last thing we saw police do was tow away a car that had new york plates on it. it was sometime afternoon officers made the discovery finding a female off-duty police officer dead inside her home on the 2900 block of mercer street in the city's port richmond neighborhood. look at videos shot earlier, people gathered on the street, many hugging, not answering any questions, and they were sticking around police who were here on the scene examining the house. we saw crime scene investigators as well as the medical examiners office and another man inside her home. right now, investigators are trying to figure that out.

the 2900 block here is open for traffic that the police presence has diminished here as well. some of the neighbors talking about that officer, saying show was a great police officer. some here saying they knew her from either in the neighborhood or on the job. at this point, the police not releasing identities of those found inside that house. reporting live in port richmond, deanna durante, nbc10 news. a 15-year-old philadelphia student is facing charges after he was caught with a loaded gun at school happened at samuel fels high school in northwest philadelphia. he set off the metal detectors when he tried to walk through and the school was put on lockdown. he admitted to stealing the gun but didn't know why he brought to it school. >> it makes me nervous and suspicious and makes me think of home schooling.
