delaware county after the power unexpectedly went off. and open ocean side. people living along the jersey shore are upset with a new plan that would allow offshore oil drilling. nbc10 news starts now. 5:00 a.m. on the nose. good among, thanks for being with us. welcome to nbc10 news. i'm tracy davidson. >> and i'm vai sikahema. it's a cool start but we'll be pleased with the outcome. let's check in with bill henley, the most accurate "first alert" forecast. >> only if you love sun. if you're longing for the clouds over the weekend, i've got bad news. it's cold this morning. colder than yesterday. down to 30 right now in the suburbs and new jersey and 29 degrees in the lehigh valley. skies are clear. no sign of any fog once the sun is up, that's all we'll see all day. and we'll see temperatures climb. 32 degrees at 8:00. by 11:00, pushing close to 50 degrees. and that's in easton. for philadelphia, you'll see a

similar quick warmup. 30s to start with. near 40 at 8:00. and then 50 degrees at 11:00. with winds that will shift out of the northwest. that's a cooling direction for us. we'll see them shift and from the west, so a nice breeze. even though a colder morning but with sunshine for the day. into the 50s all around and at the shore. no sign of any fog this morning, sunshine and 50 degrees this afternoon. i'll break it down hour by hour and show you how quickly those temperatures climb in your neighborhood when i'm back in ten minutes but first, let's see how this severe nice weather is going to affect your traffic. jessica boyington has your "first alert" traffic. >> not yet, bill. we're going to watch that later on in the commute. for now, the schuylkill expressway and south side, about five minutes or so ago, we had delays on the westbound side because they were moving some of the cones from that destruction project. so showing you the delays are gone. heading out the door trying to

get to the westbound skshgs, you'll be just fine. route 202 looks good. ten minutes from both directions. north and south from 30 to the schuylkill, and also watching mass transit. we're on time for everything. even septa, we have a lot of problems for septa, so far, we're doing well here. on time with patco as well, tracy. today, the gun control debate will be on the agenda in washington. president trump is scheduled to meet with republicans in the house and senate. >> nbc10's dray clark with with us in the efforts to change the nation's gun laws in the wake of the florida shooting. good morning, vai and tracy, there was pressure for members of congress to put their political difference aside and find a way to come up with a way to prevent gun violence and change the gun laws. the president has already promised action on bump stocks which makes rifle fire faster but there's still a lot of indifference when it comes to

strengthening background checks and banning assault weapons. democrats are pushing for a total ban. and there's also disagreement even among republicans with president trump's proposal to arm highly trained teachers. some lawmakers say that just realistically isn't possible. meanwhile, president trump raised eyebrows with comments he made yesterday talking to a group of governors about what he would have done had he been outside a high school in florida when the shooting started. >> but i i think i really think i would have run in if i didn't have a weapon. i think most of the people in the room would have run in, too. because i know most of you. >> spread referencing the broward county deputies who are now accused of not running into stoneman douglas high school. one of those scot peterson resigned through his attorney, he said he's been unfairly

labeled a coward. and he felt that peterson thought the shooting was happening outside the building and he followed protocol by take up tactical position outside the school. in the digital operations center, dray clark, nbc10 news. thank you. a 15-year-old is facing charges. police made the discovery yesterday as the student tried to pass through a medal detector at a south philadelphia high school. police say the student confessed to stealing the gun. no one was hurt. in delaware county a downed power line there stopped an amtrak train in its tracking and trapped 50 people on board. this happens at the fullkroft station. we're lettering more about two police officers found dead in a home. the police responded to a home

after the officer didn't show up for her shift. police tell us the officer was a 14-year-old veteran of the force. the department has not released the victims' names or how they died. businesses and workers are feeling the financial burn from a fire that destroyed a building in old city more than a week ago. it could be two months before the little lion is up and running again. the restaurant at third and chestnut is closed because of water damage to the neighboring building. the restaurant is holding a fund razor this morning for the nearly 80 people who are now out of work. >> if it comes to it, you don't know what's going to happen next. meanwhile, at the shop on 3rd street they're also dealing with water damage there. they expect to be closed four to six weeks. wilmington city leaders want your help in redesigning a group of west side parks. the city is working on redesigning wood lawn park, cool

springs park and tilton park. the first of a series of it happens at wood lawn library, vai. a plan that could lead to offshore drilling in the atlantic ocean faces opposition from those at the jersey shore. community leaders spoke out against the proposal yesterday. the administration's plan would also allow for drilling of oil and gas off the east coast. it says it would help the use compete with other oil-originations but critics feel a spill of the deep water horizon would be catastrophic to new jersey tourism and fishing industries. >> this is a frightening ordeal for a risk far greater than the economic returns. >> organizers want to get the message out before march 9th which is the end of the period when the public can comment on the proposal. i'm meteorologist bill

henley. a chilly start this morning. but temperatures are warming up nicely. we're in the clear this morning. we'll see bright sunshine all day long. and the numbers will warm into the 50s today as part of a trek, streak that's going to continue tomorrow. it will be a short streak, but it's going to continue through the end of february which is tomorrow. 28 degrees in allentown. 26 in pottstown. there are some cold neighborhoods this morning. 36 degrees in millville. a cold start but with sunshine, look what we have to look forward to during the day today. temperatures in the 50s this afternoon for philadelphia and the suburbs. 56 degrees in lansdale and nothing but sunshine. kutztown, high of 55. allentown in the 50s too. clear at the shore. 55 degrees in atlantic city. wilmington will warm to 56. just a bit warmer in hammington and trenton. a nice sunny day today. radar and satellite, we're in the clear.

you'll see brilliant sunshine all day long. but the next round of clouds will start moving in tomorrow. you can see the change coming up on the seven-day forecast. tomorrow, rain that is out of texas will start sending us clouds. no rain tomorrow but as we move into thursday and friday, a windy and rainy storm system coming together. you see the showers building to the south. this is wednesday evening, 11:00, a few showers possible at the shore late wednesday night. but the bulk of this rain is going to come through during the day on thursday. thursday morning, just to the southwest and look how that rain is building into thursday afternoon. and it continues moving in, into friday. and we'll have to keep an eye on that, so that will be getting closer as this system comes to an end late friday night. it will be out of here before the weekend. a look at your weekend forecast, when i come back in just ten minutes. >> out of here by the weekend. that's what i heard. thanks, bill. 5:08, let's get to you work with a check of route 309.

>> jessica boyington a look at that. jessica, what do you think? >> yeah, vai, we look good so far. pretty easy commute. the turnpike, watching both directions, north and south look good. an easy drive so far. and also watching the blue route, too, we have drive times here that don't look too bad right now. 14 minutes is considered light. right now, 15 minutes a typical length of time for this drive time. on the southbound side from the schuylkill, 295, we're still watching the fire over old city. and there's closure there, too. it's a little less than before. they're narrowed it down to chestnut street, so about a city block. we're watching 295 hamilton, around sloan avenue, it looks good in both directions. northbound and southbound side. we're not seeing any problems on the majors. we know that can change for the rest of the roads when i come back. in the fight against opioid addiction, experts say early

about a quarter past 5:00 a.m. finding the solution to addiction. this week, we already heard from young adults who got hooked on opioids as teenager. >> this morning, nbc10's matt delucia finds out what schools are doing for the addiction to painkillers. >> the progression just happened so fast. >> reporter: he got hooked on pale killers when 14 years old. seven years, he's in rehab. >> i was never warned of the dangers of prescription drugs and the same thing could happen

to you. >> reporter: he said prescription opioid pin killers were never part of any drug education he received growing up. and he's not alone. >> in high school, i didn't have any talks or anything like that. >> reporter: do you think that conversation should be happening in our school. >> absolutely. >> reporter: that got brian courson fired up, he works with these young men in delaware county. the problem he says is everywhere. >> there is not a school district across this country that is not affected by the opioid epidemic. and anybody that thinks their school district isn't, is in complete denial. >> that's how easy it happens. >> reporter: opioid drugs are part of the talk in a handful of philly classrooms. tony smith and another group of paid professionals started that in elementary schools. >> we're building that relationship with our students so, i think that's the most important aspect. >> reporter: the group teaches 90 to 100 students in 34 schools

in the zrigts. a mere drop in the bucket compared to 100,000 students in philly classrooms. >> i mean, it's a state of emergency that has been declare declared. why would not not be correspond curriculum for schools for people to know. >> reporter: at the dupe point hospital, the doctor said the conversation must be held one way or another. >> doctors and parents have a discussion about when medicine is appropriate. and when it's appropriate, what to do when the condition is over with with leftover medicine. >> reporter: to protect their kids and their future. >> do you think that would have made a difference for you? >> possibly. because it may have planted that seed. >> reporter: matt delucia, nbc10 news. meantime in delaware the state's fight against opioids just got a financial boost. high mark delaware announced a $325,000 grant yesterday. part of the money will go towards counseling and treatment. another part will replenish

i think most people will be okay. it's cool. >> i had to find my gloves in my car when i got in and said burr. >> said the man who went from his heated home to his heated car. if you're going to stand outside for a while, you're going to need the winter coat. especially in some neighborhoods. not so bad on boathouse row. the temperatures are above freezing. it's in the 30s. a live clear view of boathouse row. it is going to be a nice and mild day and again tomorrow. but march is going to begin with wet and windy weather. fortunately, we're drying out for the weekend. this is where you're going to need the heavy coat. lehigh valley, the suburbs, some neighborhoods in jourthscy have dipped down to below freezing. most are 36 degrees. and in philadelphia, 36 degrees. some are in neighborhoods chestnut hill below freezing. and parkside down to 30 degrees and somerton and low 40s in

society hill. we will see sunshine, a chilly start at the bus stop in the 30s. reading, allentown, close to 40 degrees in atlantic city. fortunately, trenton, wilmington, all getting bright sunshine. so it's a quick warmup with nothing but sunshine today. our skies are clear. trenton, hatfield, philadelphia, glassboro, no sign of fog, or fog this morning, we're fog-free. come tomorrow, we'll see the clouds return to the area. today, even though it's cooler with sunshine, it may actually feel warmer this afternoon. by lunchtime, 51 degrees. lehigh valley up to 50. 56 degrees in millville. and into the 50s this afternoon. 55 degrees at 3:00 in philadelphia. look at the 50s for millville and mt. holly. by this evening, we'll see the temperatures come down. the skies will stay clear this evening. it's tomorrow that the clouds move in. and that's going to lead to rain. rain beginning in march. before we get to the weekend, thursday and friday.

for philadelphia, dover, atlantic city and reading. there's threat of flooding. coastal flooding at the shore because the storm will also bring strong gusty winds. come saturday, the winds will still be blowing. but the wet weather moves out and we'll get afternoon sunshine with temperatures in the 40s on saturday and sunday. less windy, back into the 40s and dry through the weekend. more wet weather is ahead actually next week. a look at when you can expect that with the 10 day on 10 in the next half hour. federal investigators are now involved in a deadly accident inside the lehigh tunnel. a driver was killed by a falling electrical pipe. ahead in the next half hour, when we could learn the official cause. also tightening her purse strings why the tooth fairy isn't leaving as much money under the pillow as she did last year. - [narrator] look around.

period. it work out out to $190 per customer. and also let's talk about this, employers are making tough decisions in order to fill job vacancies. what's that about? >> that's exactly right. unemployment continues to decrease, but it's taking longer to actually fill job vacancies. kippinger is saying employers are having to decide whether to fill their positions or wait longer to get what they need. after discussion some companies ramped up their job requirements with education and credentials. now, the labor market may change that, health care and finance jobs are take the longest to fill with an average of 50 days. and it's most acute in the northeast and northwest. let's give you a quick check of your markets. open gains. stocks rallied with the dow going 400 points on a boost from 3m, boeing and apple.
