senior trip if they follow through with this walkout this morning. miguel martinez-valle joins us live with more on the motivation behind this student protest. >> that's right. i spoke to one of the student leaders who organized this protest. he was tell iing me essentially they want a few things. they want answers as to why their teacher was suspended. they want security measures at their school to keep them safe and they want to know what's going to happen to the students that took place in the walkout this morning. >> i don't want to see my cla classmates get shot. >> in order to ensure their safety in high school, today hundreds of cherry hill east students chose to march out. >> they just want to come home at the end of the day. they don't want to be wearing about bullet proof backpacks. >> the shooting has school security ob everyone's minds. a topic that got their history teacher suspended when he brought up concerns. >> it's not going to be the

same. we're we're going to keep fighting until e we get him back. >> reporter: following the protest, students were taken into the auditorium where the principal tried to answer some questions. this is video from inside that meeting. students tell me they didn't get the answers they were looking for, but they won't stop until they do. >> we sat there had for a b hour and learned nothing about our safety, about our education, about what he's going to do to help us. >> we're not to stop until we get school security. >> reporter: after the walkout, there was an assembly inside the school where students were able to talk to the principal but they told me a lot of the questions about what happened to their teacher, those were not answered. i tried to reach out to the principal. he did not return my phone call or e-mail. i did get a hold of someone from the school district and say they sent me a link to a statement they had saying while they support the right for students to speak out and express concerns, they would rather they do so inside the school. we'll have more on the story coming up at 6:00.

back to you. >> they made quite the statement today. we learned new information about the florida high school massacre suspect. nicholas cruz refused to let the school district provide him with mental health services. that e refusal is allowed by federal law. also today prosecutors planned to ask a judge for permission to get hair and dna samples during a court hearing, but that hearing was cancelled. and today the officer who arrested cruz was honored with a day of thanks. broward county leaders and members of the community applauded the officer and thanked him for his service. today was proclaimed leonard appreciation day. students returned to the high school coming up tomorrow. >> the gun debate in washington heats up. erin coleman is is joining us live with what lawmakers said today. >> a lot of talk, but not a lot of progress on the senate floor today. one lawmaker after another stood

up and blamed loopholes in gun laws that need to be fixed. the senators said those looph e loopholes allowed cruz to buy a semi automatic rifle. >> it's outrageous that so many guns are sold with no background checks whatsoever. whether you're a felon, mentally ill, spousal abuser, outrageous. we should close those loopholes and close them now. >> on the other side of the aisle, republicans said cruz could have been stopped had armed school resource officers gone into the school. congressman scalise, who was shot himself, talked about the importance of officers at that school. >> i think what angered my the most is there was sheriffs deputy, trained and armed at the school assigned to protect a school and then he hid out instead of protecting the students. i wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for law enforcement confronting the shooter in my

case. it's really disappointing that somebody didn't go into the school that was there and armed to protect the kids. >> they were outside washington last summer. president trump met with republican lawmakers to talk about the gun issue. a bipartisan bill calling for stronger background checks is gaining momentum. but there's still a lot of disagreement among lawmakers when it comes to banning assault weapons. gun control activists are voicing anger at florida lawmakers for not making enough changes in the wake of the massacre. the freshman building where the shooting took place remains closed. the rest of the school is still with grief counsellors, comfort dogs and posters with sympathy from high schools across the country. erin coleman, nbc 10 news. >> now to your first alert weather, if you have been out there today, the sun is back. >> we have been looking forward to the day when we yowould need

we're well above that through the area. a little cooler at the beaches because of the wind coming off the cooler ocean. it's even 57 in allentown. as we go through the evening, it's clear, but the temperature does not drop very much. this is not very cold. 36 at 7:00 a.m. that's not cold. and tomorrow is going to be even warmerer than today despite the increase in clouds. and then we have yet another storm on the way for later in the week. rain, coastal flooding, strong gusty winds. more about this and the timing, coming up. >> today prosecutors tried to convince a jury to convict the mayor of selling his office to campaign donors. closing arguments are underway in ed pawlowski cease corruption trial. steven fisher is life outside the courthouse with more on the final word from both the prosecution and defense.

>> reporter: so many many people packed into the courtroom this morning that the court had had to open up an overflow room where people could go and listen. keep in mind, this is a trial that's been going on for more than a month, but starting tomorrow, it will be the hands of the jury. after nearly six weeks of trial and dozens of witnesses called to the stand, both sides presenting their closing argument s s to the jury. the trial vounds an alleged pay to play case against current mayor ed pawlowski. the prosecution read transcripts from reported phone calls with pawlowski to hammer home evidence of his use of burner phones and the assistant u.s. attorney told the jury, quote, the apple rots from the core, end quote. he was the core of the city and he inspected the employees. finally she asked the jury to return a guilty verdict for pawlowski. as far as where we stand right now, pau law ski's attorney is still upstairs with his closing

argument. we expect to wrap that up soon. once that's over, the prosecution gets a chance for a rebuttal if they wish. but again, starting tomorrow morning, it will be in the hands of the jury. they will have to come up with a verdict. reporting live, steven fisher, nbc 10 news. one person was found dead in north philadelphia. firefighters attacked the flames from the roof of this home. two people were able to escape through a window. they are now in stable condition and right now officials are looking for a cause. new details now in a triple shooting in. north philadelphia. one of the victims died. surveillance video shows the moment a gunman walked up to two men yesterday morning and fired. a third victim was a woman who was a bistander in that area. both victims who survived are in stable condition. now to an update on the story we told you about yesterday as breaking news. police are having a tough time

today as they investigate the death of one of their own. two people including a police officer were found dead in a home in port richmond yesterday. police responded to the home on mercer street after the officer did the not show up tr her shift. >> it's always difficult when you investigate any death, but particularly those of your colleagues. it's a very tough situation because you know the individual. so it makes it more difficult to deal with. >> the commissioner said there were no signs of force d entry into the home and no obvious signs of how the couple died. president trump is prepare ing for a second term in office. today he announced that a digital margt marketing expert will manage his reelection campaign. he was called an amazing talent. the president's national security adviser says the president has not ordered him to stop russian interference in future elections. director mike rogers testified on capitol hill today.

ev evans are getting signatures for the congressman. one voter told us she's back in evans to e see change in washington. >> it had to be a blue. wave in november. es e person personally with the gun laws, they have to change. the only way they are going to change is if we do a complete turn around. >> republicans are hoping that a court challenge will stop the new congressional district map from taking effect. if the court rules in the favor, the old map will be ren re instated. the chester mayor will announce he's running for congress. he's running in the new fifth district, which includes most of delaware county. before becoming mayor, he was a stative for more than 20 years. new details in the investigation into what caused a fire that destroyed dozens of buss from the school district fleet. there are no signs the fire was suspicious. 16 buss were e destroyed, 14 more were damaged. philadelphia police are searching for some new officers.

a chemical odor forced the evacuation of dozens of employees at a printing company outside of scranton. the odor was so strong, 11 workers felt sick enough to go to the hospital to be checked out. emergency officials responded to the paper company in pennsylvania this morning. they say some equipment inside the building released a hazardous material, which caused skin irritation. we're told the 11 workers will be okay. the fight against opioids brought people together. jeff sessions, josh sue pea row, and others announced a new task force to fight the epidemic. it's important considering over 100,000 americans have already died from overdoses. >> we will use criminal penalties, civil penalties, whatever laws and tools we have to hold people accountable if

they break our laws. >> sessions also announced that federal prosecutor mary daily will serve as director of the doj's opioid enforcement and prevention efforts. john carney spent some time with elementary school students in wilmington today. students at mount pleasant began their day a little differently than most. they did breathing exercises and listened to soothing muse toik get in the right mind set for learning. it's part of an opportunity grant program introduced. and the government wants to introduce funding to allow more school cans to do that. today former president bill clinton paid his respects to the late reverend billy graham. clinton arrived at the library where he's lying in repose. what he admired most is he was the same person in public that he was in private. so far more than 6,000 people have across the country have come to pay their respects. today lebron james responded to that recent billboard campaign calling for the star to

beaches is the sea breeze has come in. so it's 46 at cape may point where it was about 56 a few hours ago. the wind makes all the difference. 46 in avalon. it was 60. just a half hour ago. we're high and dry in the east. and plenty of dry air in the midwest and great lakes too. but there's also plenty of moisture down to the southwest of us. way down to the the southwest. if you keep going, you can trace those clouds back to the tropical pacific. this is the strong jet stream that's been with us for much of the winter. it's helped fuelled the storms that we have had. it's also helped with the pattern to keep us with warmer than normal temperatures. as we go through the day tomorrow, we're going to be starting off with sunshine. but as the moisture approaches, the clouds increase. and no rain tomorrow. none tomorrow night. but on thursday.

, and especially in the afternoon, that's when the rain is is coming in. the wind is shifting in from the east. starting to pile up the water at the beaches. we have a full moon. that piles it up even more. we're going to see some coastal flooding along with some periods of heavier rain. here we go. into friday morning. and look at the north side of this storm. we still have the strong wind colliding with the strong west wind. then as the storm intensifies offshore, it could pull down enough cold air to bring the snow line down. then it's still out there in the ocean. and the north winds are howling in here on saturday as well.

but at least it's dry. as far as the winds are concerned, friday morning, thursday, thursday night, friday morning. it's not all that strong. but as that storm intensifies offshore, watch these gusts go up through the 20s and into the 30s and even into the 40s. and the amount of rain according to many of the computer models lest to the south, more to the north, we're talking ab inch to perhaps 2 inches in some localized spots. but the thing is that it's been very wet lately. and it could be some localized flooding out of that as well. it's another system even nx week we'll get into that too coming up. sky force 10 over breaking news. fire crews are battling a house fire along owen avenue. you can see the heavy smoke coming through the roof.

when the wind starts turning into the east as we go into friday. dry air across the east now. and into the great lakes. but back toward oklahoma and texas, it's goes back to the tropical pacific. we have a jet stream coming up there that's getting that moisture and racing it in your direction. so there's really nothing to stop it. here we are tomorrow. we have sunshine in the morning. the clouds increase in the afternoon. we are not expecting any rain wednesday night most of thursday morning looks dry for much of the area. perhaps southern degette. s a little bit before noon. but the wind starts coming in from the ocean as we go into thursday afternoon. thursday night it's coming in pretty strong combined with the full moon that could add to coastal flooding. the heavier rain could add to the issue there. some localized flooding and here

happen to the students who took part in today's protest. just like you said in the last half hour, the school tweeted out a statement by the principal in which hi he says he retracts the statement that he made saying that students who protested would be kept from senior trip, prom and graduation. saying instead that he welcomes an opportunity to work with the students to make change. now here is a look inside the that happened had at the school earlier today. so this is at the assembly inside the school following the protest where students and the principal tried to talk about concerns over safety. i talked to one of the student organizers who says the morning's march was to demand added security or other changes in the school as well as to protest the suspension of their history teacher, who students say was suspended tr bringing up concerns over safety at the school.
