part in today's protest. just like you said in the last half hour, the school tweeted out a statement by the principal in which hi he says he retracts the statement that he made saying that students who protested would be kept from senior trip, prom and graduation. saying instead that he welcomes an opportunity to work with the students to make change. now here is a look inside the that happened had at the school earlier today. so this is at the assembly inside the school following the protest where students and the principal tried to talk about concerns over safety. i talked to one of the student organizers who says the morning's march was to demand added security or other changes in the school as well as to protest the suspension of their history teacher, who students say was suspended tr bringing up concerns over safety at the school.

we're watching this giant storm coming out of the heart of texas. that one is going to be a rainmaker for the end of the week. it's going to be fairly disruptive. we'll talk about the high winds, beach erosion and plenty of rain. >> the last few minutes, we have learned one person was rushed to the hospital following this fire in delaware county. firefighters have been battling the flames on owen avenue since around 4:15 this afternoon. the fire is still not under control. no word on how serious the injuries are. we're going to continue to follow this and bring you new information as soon as we dpet it. today one of rump's long-time aids refused to answer questions about her time in the white house. during a closed door interview. communications director met with the house intelligence committee, which is investigating contacts president's came pain and russia. she refused to talk about her times a a spokeswoman. other workers refused to answer questions citing limits on what

they can say. for the second day, mourners paid respects to reverend billy graham in north carolina. bill clinton was among those mourners. former president george bush paid his respects yesterday. graham had's body will be taken to washington, d.c. tomorrow. he will lie in honor at the u.s. capitol wednesday and thursday. his funeral is is set for friday. an emotional day for police as they investigate the death of one of their own. a female officer and her boyfriend were found dead inside a home in port richmond yesterday. police responded to the home ob mercer street after the officer didn't show up for work. her captain went to check on her. when when he couldn't reach her by phone. today we asked how officers are are holding up. the commissioner told us it's tough. >> i'm not just talking about the sworn men ask women. i'm talking about folks who are working in police radio who hear really tough calls every day,

call takers and any number of other folks who deal with the traumatic events that go on each and every day in a big city. >> investigators still don't know how the couple died. jury deliberations could begin soon in allentown. mayor pawlowski's trial, both sides presented their closing arguments. he's accused in a pay to play scheme involving city contracts. more than 50 witnesses were called to testify during the six-week trial. students in new jersey could soon get some down time. yesterday the senate approved a bill that requires 20 minutes of recess a day. that's signed by governor murphy and will go in effect in 2019. and stimulating job growth in new jersey. today governor murphy signed an executive order to create the jobs and economic opportunity council. they will make recommendations to the governor on how to stimulate job growth and development in the garden state.

and delaware governor john carney attended a special class this morning in wilmington. he took part in breathing exercises and listened to soothing music. it's how students start their day. it's part of an opportunity grant program introduced last year. the governor wants to increase funding for the program to allow more schools to take part. finding foster families. >> nbc 10 and telemundo are working to find homes for kids in need. from foster child to foster parent, we sat down with a local woman using her own life experience to change the lives of kids in need. a veteran firefighter resigns just days before. the federal court appearance. what nbc 10 has uncovered about a possible connection to a wide reaching prescription fraud case and more fallout could come. for 40 years it was a popular restaurant here in delaware. then yesterday morning, it

a long time family favorite restaurant closes its doors without warning. for almost four decades, it was the go-to eatery for delaware families. many folks used it as a break stop on their trips to and from

beach trips. they have been. dishing out home style meals tr 38 years. >> it's along the dupont parkway near middletown. and as nbc 10 reporter tim furlong explains, nearby construction contributed to the closure. >> the omelets were the best. >> reporter: everyone around middletown seems to love the restaurant, but a few days ago a water heater tloed a temporary shutdown. yesterday the owner announced after 38 years the place is closed down for good. chairs empty today at what would have been their breakfast hour. >> it was always good. there was no surprises. that's what i liked. i know it was going to be good food and thog wrong with it. >> reporter: the firefighters used to meet there for breakfast. they and so many upset to hear the bad news. . the food was good, people were nice ander too upset to talk on camera, but her friend tells me it was getting more and more duflt to maintain the place and the owner just couldn't make it work any longer. one of the biggest problems might have started in the

mid-'90s. everybody used this route and one day the state opened delaware route 1, a much faster toll road. traffic in front of the area dropped off considerably. add to that the seemingly endless construction up the road as the new route 301 bipass. it just began to take too much effort to eat here. >> it's hard they have the construction going on because you have to go up and around and around. >> reporter: no more pop pop's spaghetti or the chicken and dumplings. the end of the road for an iconic place. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> a huge loss for delaware. plans are in the works for a new hotel in new castle county. >> it's not a done deal yet, but. devel developers are proposing a five-story hotel to be built off chapman road next to the mall in newark. not clear what brand of hotel it will be. we're told the project is still

in the planning stages. if you park on main street in newark, you'll be happy to know rates at metered spots are not going up. council members voted on a proposal to raise parking meters to $2 an hour. even though it was voted down, it was agreed to revisit the topic in the future. the city of al lentown is seeking the public's input about a park that's been a source of noise complaints. the department plans to hold two meetings to develop a master plan for andre reid park. the mayor had several basketball rims removed from the park in response to noise u complaints at night. the first meeting is is set for march 13th. philadelphia city hall do n dozens gathered for the annual raising of the flag of the dominican republic. dominicans in philadelphia are celebrating the 174th anniversary of the dominican republic's independence from haiti. in china today, a ceremony to mark the beginning of the olympic flag tour.

you get into the interior areas like egg harbor, and you hit the 50s. the water temperature is 45 degrees. so no surprise that that's where they are sitting along the shoreline. doppler radar is quiet. not expecting to see anything tonight or tomorrow. we'll see clouds coming in the satellite tomorrow afternoon. high pressure is in place. this is keeping us nice and dry. that sinking, warming air. another beautiful day tomorrow with a few extra clouds because of this. this is a large storm system that's going to cross the country and right out over the atlantic south of us, it will become a coastal storm. it's not coming up the coastline from further south. and let's watch what happens. it's going to bring us our rain. it's going to bring us high winds. it could be damaging winds on friday. some coastal erosion. we're going to have clear skies tonight. you're going to wake up in the 30s. high, thin clouds drifting through the area tomorrow. we will see some sunshine as well. we'll make it to the 50s and 60s

on those gusty winds. then on thursday, early in the morning, some showers will start in southern delaware. perhaps even toward cape may along the jersey shore. by the afternoon we have showers, even maybe a few thunderstorms embedded in all of this. still hanging on to the 50s on thursday. and more rain comes in thursday night and into friday morning. now cooler air drifts in, but you notice they have 30s, above freezing with snow falling in parts of the pennsylvania suburbs. i think if anything we see a mix across the lehigh valley, perhaps the upper suburbs. it's too warm to support anything like that. it will probably just be a rain, but a cold rain. it's out of here by the afternoon. the north winds come in ask we. top out in the 40s on your friday. so how much rain? enough to do a good soaking. we're looking at 1 to 2 inches across the area on friday. and we could see high winds coming in here behind all of the heaviest rain thursday night. friday could be very, very windy. make sure to follow along with that.

drug costs quadrupled in one year for a group of workers, it raised big questions about what was going on. tonight we have some answers for you. and it could impact public safety. nbc 10 was first to reveal the investigationing several shore towns last summer. now the first city worker involved in the prescription fraud case is heading to court. >> he's a firefighter who resigned over the weekend and local authorities say the scandal could involve even more. ted greenberg has the story all new at 5:00. >> he resigned in his own good faith. >> reporter: margate's fire chief confirming a veteran firefighter submit ted this resignation letter on saturday. he gave. no explanation, but nbc 10 has learned the same firefighter is scheduled to have a plea hearing in federal court on thursday. sour sources say is connected to a wide reaching prescription fraud case involving public employees in south jersey.

we're not naming the firefighter because he isn't currently charged with a crime. >> he's an excellent firefighter. he's a great family man. heath evans come trs a great family. and it's just disheart hadening to all of us he resigned. >> nbc 10 was the first to report last summer when we revealed a massive year over year spike in the cost of prescriptions filled by city workers. this week's scheduled plea is the first involving a margate employee. investigators have also focused on public workers in atlantic city and other communities. 15 people uncolluding pharmaceutical reps have already pleaded guilty to take iing parn the multimillion dollar kickback scheme. prosecutors say it defrauded benefits programs and other insurers through claims for expensive and medically unnecessary compounded medications. i reached out to the lawyer, but

shootings. the attorney general announced a new directive that calls for the release of any body or dosh cam videos using deadly force. agencies can withhold past the dead line but they are required to have a reason. they will review before the directive takes effect. here's a look at the stories making headlines county by county across the region today. a federal judge is ordering a commissioner to remain in jail until his trial on child pornography charges. the 6-year-old once served as a commissioner. the defense argued he's seeking treatment and should be freed, but it wasn't enough. prosecutors say hundreds of images of sexually abused children were found on his home computer. >> a show of support from students at parkland high school. the victims of the high school massacre in parkland, florida. they decided to sell bracelets

with the words parkland for parkland on them. they plan to send the money to the shooting victims' families. >> we came out because our cousin goes to that school. and we went through a lot in the process. we were imagining what those families were going through. >> at last check, only a couple hundred bracelets were left out of 1100. a new partnership in center city is helping former prison prisoners. now he is part of the mural arts restorative justice program. it's a collaboration between the barns foundation and philadelphia. it gives current and formers a chance to create bonds with their community and develop job skills. nbc 10 responds is helping erase some of the medical debt that's building against more than a million people in our

how about we go to blan don don. you're in the mid-50s. now let's scoot on down and check out what's going on in philadelphia. graduate hospital at 58. it's 56 in summerton. it will be in the upper 30s in philadelphia. a little cold er in the pennsylvania suburbs. mid-30s there. and the same for the lehigh valley. warmer along the shore. then we start to focus on what's going to be happening after that. so tomorrow one more sensational day. we'll see 60s across much of the area. with some high, thin clouds. then that big coastal storm coming out of texas is going to slide across the u.s. and then out across the coastline. and it's going to be parked just to our south and our east. that's going to create havoc for two days.

high winds, perhaps some flooding along the jersey shore. beaches will have to be on high alert because we'll have a full moon and strong winds and we're going to get periods of heavy rain. finally, though, it looks like it's out of here in time for our first dry weekend in more than a month. everything is quiet in our area. we have a huge ridge of high pressure. that's the sinking warming air. that's going to strengthen and head in our direction. we have clear skies tonight. you'll see the 40s early tomorrow morning as the clouds kind of move into the area. the winds continue out of the south, but maybe it to the 50s and low 60s. some clouds drift through. we're fine tomorrow night. it's very early on thursday morning. we can see the first of the rain showers across southern jersey

and southern parts of delaware. then we get into the heavier periods of rain thursday afternoon and thursday night. perhaps even a thunderstorm. we hang on to 50 on thursday. down to the 40s for friday. and look what happens. thursday night into friday morning, we're really not cold enough to support snow, but maybe we'll see a cold rain or maybe a little bit of a sleet mix across the lehigh valley and upper suburbs before all this is out of here for our beautiful weekend. the weekend is going to be more seasonal. 38 to be tnight in philadelphia. along the jersey shore, 40. clouds drifting through. we're going to be looking at 61 in philadelphia. the suburb ises at 58. we have 51 on thursday. march comes in like a lion with heavy rain and high winds

nbc 10 and tel mun did 62 are teaming up with the philadelphia department of human services to find foster families. >> j jr introduces us to a foster mom who knows firsthand what it's like leaving home as a child. she's using her own experiences to fill her own home with love and support tr those in need. >> it is not easy keeping this household running smoothly. six kids ranging from a toddler to. half are her biological children, the other three are brothers taken in by this single mom a year ago. >> you didn't bat an eye. >> i said okay. >> with a newborn? >> with a newborn. yes, she was new. pr people to love her. she has more brothers. it was difficult because i had a new baby. lots of appointments and they

needed lots of appointments. but once you get things on track, it's just living normally. >> reporter: for erika, it wasn't something she knew herself as a young girl. >> i came from a situation where it was rough. and they just didn't have the tools they needed to parent. >> but her life changed when she was taken in by a foster mom at the age of 8. >> i had an awesome foster mom who adopted me and still my mom today. my foster children call her grandma. it's been awesome for me. that's why i want to give the same thing that was given to me to someone else. >> now a college graduate, she's created a home made up of many moving parts filled with love. >> did you let your kids know, hey, i've been where you are. >> yeah, i tell them all the time. i understand when they are sad. and when they leave to visit, they are sad they are leaving their mom. and i assure them you're going to see her again next week.
