survived what police consider a terrifying crash caused by road rage. >> it started out a back and forth that escalated terribly. >> reporter: a woman was on her way to work at wawa when this man in this sedan kept braking hard. >> i beeped my horn at him. it triggered me. >> rereturned the hand gesture. >> e we drove her route to work along the road. terrified she lost control and hit this tree. her r car split in happen. the back landing across the street. the front e end came to rest here some 50 yards from impact. her tire tracks still visibly. >> i saw him look at me and kept

taking a stand. hundreds of students make their voices heard by walking out of class in solidarity with their teacher. >> that teacher was suspended for his comments on school security at cherry hill high school. in the wake of the deadly mass shooting in south florida. miguel martinez-valle is live in cherry hill with what students have to say and how the principal responding to the the walkout. sdplr from that mass student walkout this morning to an assembly that happened inside the school after the walkout, students say not going to stop protesting and they are photo going to stop having this conversation with school officials and with school district officials until there's a change. >> i don't want to see class pates get shot. my teachers, i don't want to see that. >> reporter: in order to enshooer sure their safety in high school, hundreds of students chose to march out. >> they don't want to be worried about bullet proof backpacks.

>> school security is on everyone's minds. it got their history teach er suspended when he brought up concerns. >> it's not going to be the same. we're going to keep fighting until we get him back. >> reporter: following the protests, students were taken into the auditorium where the principal tried to answer some questions. this is video from inside that meet i meeting. they didn't get the answers they were looking for, but they won't stop until they do. >> we sat for an hour and learned fog about our safety, our education, about what he's going to do to help us. >> it's not going to stop until we get school security. >> reporter: a lot of students were worry ied or kept tr graduation, but the school did tweet out a statement by the principal saying there would be no punishment for the students that protested today and saying he wants to engage in a dialogue and work with them to make a change. a lot of those students and

parents said they are going to a school board meeting tonight. i'm miguel martinez-valle, nbc 10 news. turning to your first alert forecast, sun and then storms. pretty nice tuesday for your evening commute here in south philadelphia. but the storms are on the horizon for the start of march. >> meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us live to time out the storms. it is coming in like a lion. >> as soon as we start march on thursday, we have another storm headed this way. no sign of one right now. we have nothing but blue skies out there. puch of the area that was in easton. the flag, e though, that's the result of a southwest wind. it's warming us up ahead of this next storm. and it's still quite a ways away. but the area u of rain issing. the intensity is growing. and it's moving in this direction. and there's nothing to stop it.

52 degrees right now in philadelphia. we're starting to fall into the 40s in some areas. but that's still kind of mild for this time of the year. as we go through the night tonight, not all that cold. the average low is 30 in philadelphia. so we're way above average. that's going to continue tomorrow. we'll time out that storm and tell you what's ahead for the weekend, coming up. this is after a day of shopping today. their car windows smashed and personal belongings stolen. police say there have been similar break ins in other parts of the county recent ly. if you have a mountain of unpaid parking tickets in philadelphia, now is the time to pay up. the city is is offering an amnesty deal. here's how it works. you pay for any tickets you received between 2013 through 2017. and any tickets or fees from before that vanish.

both sides presented their closing arguments. they are accused in a pay to play scheme. more than 50 witnesses were called to testify during the nearly six-week trial. pennsylvania congressman among a group of lawmakers championing a new gun violence reform bill in washington. >> representative brian fitzpatrick took part in a news conference. he and other lawmakers are urging for the passage of the gun violence restraining order act. the bill help hads keep americans safe while keeping second amendment rights intact. >> keeping our community safe are not mutually exclusive concepts. >> it would make sure to reference all gun databases. >> one of three people charged with kidnapping and killing a

woman over an $800 debt will spend the rest of her life behind bars. she was sentenced to life without parole. this is in connection to the murder. prosecutors say in the summer of 2016 smith and two others kidnapped, handcuffed and shot her. the body was found in fair mount park. one of the worst flu seasons in recent history is still going strong. pennsylvania is planning to hold more free flu shot clinics across the state. in our area, clinics will be held in lehigh counties through april. pennsylvania has seen 150 flu death this is season alone. response from the king. today lebron james reacted to a recent billboard campaign calling for the nba star to come to philadelphia. take a look. these billboards line a street close to the cleveland arena where lebron plays home games. tilly wants lebron.

>> nbc 10 is locking at the journey of a medical bill from your doctors office to the collection calls at your own home. >> it's just an indication of how unaffordable costs can get. we found that unpaid medical bills may provide an opening to negotiate for patients who simply can't afford the original amount. >> for tammie, a cup of mourning tea offers stability in a time of turbulence. her husband died of liver cancer in 2015. then she was diagnosed with breast cancer early last year. >> here i go again. but this time it's me. that's what i was saying to myself. >> reporter: after eight rounds of chemo, she considers herself a survivor. but she can't can focus on her recovery because of this growing pile of medical bills.

the current total at least $4,000. >> bills keep piling up. 40 for this. a thousand for co-pay and a thousand to come back in. >> reporter: 1.1 million people have medical debt that's been sent to collection. a product of shrinking health coverage and more complicated benefits. >> there's more responsibility for out of pocket payment than there ever was before. >> reporter: he founded held advocates to help employees navigate. health benefits. the company says to start with an in network doctor if you have insurance and have a candid conversation about what you can afford. but then she says try to work with the hospital or office's billing did the. >> they are more sfophisticated in working out payment plans, recognizing the value of quick pays. >> reporter: when patients can't pay at all, their bills usually move into collections.

large port knoll owes of medical debt are sold and resold from one collector to the next. each one usually buying it for just a fraction of the previous cost. meanwhile the amount you kwhowe stays the same or even grows. but by the time collectors are calling you at home, you might have more leverage over the amount of your bill than you'd think. >> they probably bought it for some discount on the dollar. so you have a better chance of negotiating with them because they are trying to settle an account. >> reporter: they recommend telling the collectors what you can actually afford to pay each month and seeing how much they will budge. >> it's been a tough year. >> reporter: her bills aren't in collections yet. they are still too new, but right now, she doesn't know how she'll ever catch up. >> i didn't ask to be sick. this changed my whole life. i had to stop working. . i can't even pay a bill because i can't right now to athis money back. >> want to remind everyone you cannot sign up to receive a

the airport. it's 55 in fairmont. 54 in society hill. penns port, port richmond, pretty uniform temperatures right now. partly because of the wind increase. we have had nothing but sunshine today. but we don't have to go too far to find that moisture. we're dry just to the west, but that's not going to last long because the area of moisture is increasing. it comes from the tropical pacific and that's been this way for a good bit of the winter. storm after storm after storm coming in that way. but that also brings in warmer air so that's why we have had so much rain and so little snow. by tomorrow, more southwest winds start off with sunshine. then the clouds increase. the rain comes in on thursday afternoon as the wind comes in from the ocean. the combination of that easterly

wind, a full moon and the rain because some coastal flooding. some of the rain on the heavier side. on the cold side is the storm intensifies offshore. we have to change to snow certainly in the poconos and possibly in the higher elevations north and west of philadelphia. even could be even farther than that. but the temperatures will be well above freezing when that would happen. that storm is going to be a monster and that's going to cause a lot of wind around here friday and into saturday. the wind gusts not much as we head through thursday nieght. but by friday afternoon, we're gusting 40 to perhaps over 50 miles an hour in part of the area and the wind direction is going to be critical as to how much coastal flooding we get. by saturday morning, we're still gusting into around 30 but then it will diminish later on during the weekend.
