7:02 am
shooting rampage. we're going to talk to the school superintendent in a moment. but first, let's go to nbc's kerry sanders. he's at the campus for us this morning. hi, kerry. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. teachers have now made it here to marjory stoneman douglas, past the new security, which is rather intense, and through the gates to the school. and now, students are beginning to arrive. students who tell me they arrive today 14 days after the massacre somewhat anxious. but also comforted, they say, by what they feel is not only a community, but a nation's warm embrace. >> reporter: this morning, as students and staff return to class, emotions are fragile. the new normal at marjory stoneman douglas high includes armed deputies, counselors and therapy dogs. still, there's an atmosphere of hope. >> i will get through this and so will the rest of my -- the eagles. >> reporter: for many, the nightmare is still very raw, and
7:03 am
returning to school, uncertain. >> it's something that will haunt me forever, i think. >> reporter: taryn says by the grace of god she left class early on valentine's day, before the gunman started his rampage. she later learned a bullet tore through her desk and classmates on either side were killed. >> it's going to be difficult but we must move on. >> reporter: that strength on display tuesday night at a memorial vigil. and at an emotional committee hearing in tallahassee. parents who lost children, passionately debating a bill to tighten gun control laws. >> if we would have had these measures in place, i would not have to have buried my son. >> reporter: law enforcement sources telling nbc news, confessed gunman nicholkolas cr may have planned to unleash more carnage. he had five additional magazines, 150 unspent rounds.

7:05 am
were in the freshman building, which is sealed up. the idea is to get the students back together with the people they were with at the moment of the crisis. they're together for a half-day of school, it's not as though they will have books and teaching going on. this is a moment for the kids to talk to each other, to hug each other, and no doubt, cry together. savannah? hoda? >> kerry sanders, thank you very much. robert runcie is the superintendent of broward county. good morning, sir. >> good morning. >> i can't imagine the emotions being felt by parents and teachers and students going back to that school. what are you hearing from the student? >> well, you're right. it is a day of mixed emotions. we are absolutely elated and happy to have our students coming back to school, reuniting
7:06 am
the marjory stoneman douglas family, our students and our teachers. this is the best place for everyone to be, with their colleagues, their peers, their friends, so they can work together, as we go through this difficult process of trying to go from grief to some better state. so, it's part of the healing process. you know, it really starts today, i think, here at marjory stoneman douglas. >> kerry sanders pointed out there's going to be additional security, which is important. but it's a tricky balance. you want the kids to feel safe, but you want them to feel like they are in school. how do you balance that? >> one, i don't think the solution is to turn our schools into prisons and build armed fortresses. we need to enhance our security. there's a heightened level of security and law enforcement presence that we will have at the school, that will remain for the rest of the school year and into the foreseeable future.
7:07 am
so, they will see a real significant presence. we're also ensuring that our security procedures and protocols within the school continue to be followed and so forth. i think there will be enough of a balance everyone will feel comfortable that it's a new day, a new level of security around marjory stoneman douglas. >> mr. superintendent, the broward county sheriff has made no secret in his disappointment in the security officer who was assigned that day and he says never went into the school. did you know this resource deputy, scot peterson? and do you feel that the county and the security there let you down? >> yeah, no, i don't know this particular resource officer personally. what i will say is there's an
7:08 am
investigation that's been initiated by the governor and the state. i'm going to wait to see what comes out of that before, you know, i really pass any judgment. but what i will say about the whole incident is that we had administrators rushing into that building, a couple of them gave their lives to help protect our children. and they were unarmed. they're really true heroes. when we have law enforcement on site, on the campus, and when there's life-threatening incidents involved, we would expect them to respond appropriately and do everything they can to save our children and our staff. so, we'll see what happens with the results of the investigation that comes out. >> broward county superintendent robert runcie, i know it will be a busy and emotional day for you. thanks for your time. >> i thank you and i thank america and the world for your prayers and your support. it's been really heartwarming to see how humanity has come together to support the marjory

kushner can do his job after his security clearance was downgraded. nbc news confirming the president's son-in-law and senior adviser is cut off from highly-classified information. that's according to multiple sources familiar with a white house memo alerting staffers with interim security clearances, they will no longer be able to access some of the most sensitive secrets. the move ordered by john kelly, issuing new standards after a chaotic year where critics say, the west wing was operating as a rule-free zone, that waived protocol for people close to the president, including family members. democrats are welcoming the news. >> jared kushner's security clearance loss gives the word overdue new meaning. >> reporter: kouchner's spokesman says, the new policy will not affect the work he is assigned by the president. and insisting, it's not uncommon
7:11 am
for these clearance reviews to take this long in a new administration. veterans of past administrations dispute that. kushner's duties, acting like a secretary of state, to spearheading his father-in-law's pursuit of a pieeace deal betwe the israelis and palestinians. >> i have a feeling jared will do a great job. >> reporter: kouchner's hands are tied. >> bumped down to only a secret clearance, he's in the same status as the people who mow the lawn or work in the white house kitchen. >> reporter: ultimately the president has the final say. but giving kushner special access would be an unprecedented step. and ivanka trump said there would be no double-standard for family. is it appropriate for family members to have exceptions granted to them? >> we will be treated like everyone else will be treated.
7:12 am
chief of staff john kelly has made his thoughts and intentions very clear on the fact he wants to streamline and poddmodernizes process. i think that's a good thing. >> reporter: nearly 1,000 days until the next presidential election. president trump has now named his campaign manager for his 2020 re-election bid. it's a name by the name of brad parscal, who headed up his digital campaign. he is going to focus on midterm elections and helping republicans maintain congress over the next year. >> peter, thank you. we have new conversation this morning that is tied to russia's efforts to interview in the 2016 presidential race. and this comes to light as the president's long-time aide, hope hicks, has been grilled by lawmakers on capitol hill. kristen welker has that part of the story this morning. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good

morning to you. our exclusive nbc news reporting is raising new questions about whether more could have been done to prevent russian meddling in the 2016 election. and it comes as the russia probes by the special counsel and lawmakers on capitol hill, are yet again inching closer to the president himself. with the russia investigation intensifying, hope hicks, the president's long-time aide and communications director, leaving capitol hill looking unfazed, after nearly nine hours of testimony. hicks not answering reporters' questions. >> any collusion? >> reporter: inside, a bold admission, according to "the new york times," hicks says her work for president trump had occasionally required her to tell white lies. "the times" offering no examples but hicks insisting she has never lied on matters relating to the russia probe. she declined to answer questions about her time at the white house, saying she was under orders from the administration

not to talk about that, period. her testimony, or lack of it, prompting mixed reaction. >> that's the period of time where we have the most questions for her. >> i think she's been very worth right and open to all of the questions we had. >> reporter: this morning, the white house pushing back against a cnn report that special counsel robert mueller's team is asking about trump's business dealings in russia before 2016, as he considered a run. a white house lawyer declining to comment on the specifics, but casting a report of one that's way off base. adding, it's best for both parties not to address this in the press. it comes as nbc news has learned that top-secret intelligence requested by president obama in his last weeks in office, identified seven state where's there was websites that were compromised by russian-backed covert operatives. all the state and federal officials we spoke to agree, no

ryan seacrest is fighting back about allegations made by a former stylist. we're hearing from another person who says he witnessed some of that alleged bad behavior. kate snow has more on this. >> reporter: ryan seacrest continues to vehemently deny these allegations, calling a story in "variety," salacious. but we were put in contact with a source that i spoke with by phone last night. that source says he was there, too. and he described some of the sam incidents that hardy has alleged. the man has worked in hollywood for years but does not want his name used because he still works in the industry and fears retaliation. the source, who nbc news has verified worked alongside ryan seacrest, says he saw the star behave inappropriate at stylist suzie hardy. she would go to tie his shoe and
7:33 am
ryan would shove her head near his crotch. >> she's tying my shoe. >> reporter: this video was admitted as a rebuttal. just before an oscar's red carpet special in 2008, the source that worked alongside seacrest said seacrest was being dressed by hardy. the doors to the bedroom opened and seacrest was holding hardy in a bear hug. she yelled, get off of me. she was trying to get away from him. i could see an erect penis in his underwear. the source describes hardy as visibly shaking and says he urged her to talk to human resources. in a letter sent last november and obtained by nbc news, hardy's attorneys said the incident happened in 2009, and seacrest was on top of hardy in a bedroom. that letter included an allegation that in 2009, seacrest slapped hardy on her

7:35 am
i don't want to accuse anyone of not telling the truth. but in this case, i have no choice but to again deny the claims against me, remind me i was recused of any wrongdoing and put the matter to rest. hardy's attorney responded with his own statement saying, seacrest's words were an attempt to smear the victim and divert attention from her specific and supportable claims. the intense he said/she said is for hollywood to judge. >> it remains to be seen how much this is going to trail him and impact his career. so far, it really hasn't seemed to impact him at all. >> reporter: seacrest says he participated in the e! investigation to demonstrate his innocence. and praise the national reckoning over sexual harassment. i absolutely support this cause unequivocally and applaud all of the brave souls who have come forward to tell their stories. the claims made by our source
7:36 am
were rejected and deniedenied, are lies, he says. the attorney says these claims are not new and were considered by the investigator hired by e! who, again, found no evidence of wrongdoing. this morning, several networks that work with ryan seacrest are standing by him, shooting of the "american idol" reboot on nbc is later this week. seacrest hosts "live with kelly & ryan." and he's going to host e!'s red carpet oscar coverage on sunday night. >> thank you very much. we turn to al with another check of the weather. >> we're looking at the tail literally of two countries when it comes to temperatures. here in the eastern half of the u.s., an early spring. memphis, 71 today. boston, you'll be near 60. that's 17 degrees above average, new orleans, 83 degrees. tomorrow, new york city, near 60. raleigh, 67. jacksonville, 84. and the weekend, 60, kansas
