everything to higher ground. >> what we're looking at is a first alert for the entire area because of this major coastal storm. so it doesn't matter if you're in the lehigh valley or down on the jersey shore or southern delaware you're going to be affected. this is mainly friday morning through saturday at 10:00. now we are going to be looking at rain and wind tomorrow but the biggest impact coming friday with 60 mile an hour wind gusts. heavy snow falling in the poconos as well. it's going to glide past us and park out here in the atlantic. it's going to bring us some very strong winds as it deepens and strengthens. the highest winds friday afternoon and friday night. the coastal flooding will be right around the same time as the high tides, saturday morning between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. and saturday night between 8:00 and 11:00 p.m. and the heaviest rain going to

be tomorrow night through friday morning. already officials are warning across the entire area if you don't have to be out on friday, don't go out. we're going to go neighborhood by neighborhood to let you know what affects you the most when i come back. two major moves involving gun sales tonight in the wake of the high school massacre in florida. >> tonight raising the minimum age to buy guns to 21. earlier today tick's sporting goodies said it would do the same and stop selling assault type rifles. >> reporter: the seismic shifts on gun sales that tick's and wal-mart was welcome news to customers we talked to tonight. but at clayton's in wortium the staff will continue to follow federal law which says anyone 18 or older can purchase guns or ammunition. the owner says the shop alsop

won't hesitate to question anyone interested in assault style rifles. >> is this going to be for target, for house? >> if it makes our kids safer, then that's what needs to happen. >> reporter: clayton says their decision to remove assault sale rifles would work for dick's but not likely for a shop like his. we found out in area there's a dick's sporting goodies not far away. despite the two stores being relatively close, he doesn't think he'll see the same customers who shop for guns at dick's at his store. one dick's customer says this could be the start of something major. >> i think this is big step for the country. >> and speaking of guns, packing heat at a house of worship. today at church in the poconos

conducted a marriage blessing where church goers also brought their ar-15 rifles with them. the world peace and unification sanctuary church believes the ar-15 is not a weapon of destruction but rather a tool of peace. the ceremony did not come without protest. >> i should be able to protect my family and community. >> sanctioning and blessing assault weapons is preposture s and outrageous. organizers say the ceremony had nothing to do with the school shooting in florida. new tonight lawmakers in new jersey are moving forward in six gun safety bills. the assembly judiciary committee advanced the proposals which were introduced before the florida massacre. they aimed to take guns away from people who posed threats, reduce magazine capacity and background checks and more. gun rights advocates worry this will burden citizens in a state where gun laws are already

strict. it was an emotional return. students at margery stoneman douglas high school were back in class today for the first time since that mass shooting which killed 17 people. hundreds of police officers were on hand to welcome the students back and grief counselors offered their support as everyone tried to cope at the scene of the latest national tragedy. >> words cannot, you know, describe how painful it is to see, you know, an empty seat. >> they're no longer in this world and no longer with us. it's just something that i don't think any human will ever be able to fathom. >> there's a whole in our family. elaine is gone and she's not coming back. >> school will resume this week and students not comfortable with returning can finish their classes this year online. right now at 11:00, paramedics becoming patients. first responders slapped, kicked and spat on by the people they're trying to help. nbc 10's denuse nakano takes you

inside the ambulance to show you the dangers they face every day. >> reporter: it's an unpredictable job. >> you name it, it can happen to you. >> responding. >> reporter: a job that can put the people medically trained to save lives in harms way. paramedics and emts on the front lines. and we're behind the scenes with the dangers they face. >> you could end up getting assaulted by somebody under influence whether alcohol or drugs and sometimes you have irate patients and sometimes family members and bystanders. >> reporter: according to the centers of disease control and prevention ems workers have the highest on the job injury rates. in philadelphia numbers for job related injuries appear to be on the rise with more paramedics and emts getting hurt from

robberies assaults and getting stuck by patients. >> that's all going on while we're out there oftentimes in those same places. >> reporter: this emt did not have department proval to speak with us, so he's masked his identity. >> i've seen patients trying to break a chair over my head. >> we've had people punched, kicked, slapped, spat upon. all of those are considered the injuries especially with the bodily fluids. >> reporter: a city spokesman explains the rise in the number of paramedic assaults in the past two fiscal years compared to prior years may be the result of a concerted effort in better reporting rather than a rise in actual incidents. paramedics and emts are feeding more calls. last fiscal year they responded

to more than 50,000 more calls compared to 2008. one call they took brought them to a man who overdosed on heroin in kensington. paramedics worked to revive him on the side of the road. they gave him two doses of narcan and no response. he later died at the hospital. sometimes thankless, and with the threat of injury and even violence on the job paramedics and emts sometimes become patients themselves. denise nakano, nbc 10 news. >> the philadelphia police department has created new rules to deal with assault attack patients. a man shot at point-blank range in the face and police don't think he's going to make it. it happened about an hour ago. the gunman is on the run

tonight. students at a philadelphia high school can expect an increased police presence tomorrow in response to a shooting threat posted on social media. the instagram posts warns students of a certain ethnic background would be shot at an charter high school. tonight we spoke to the vice chair of the anti-violence coalition. she has a son who goes to the school. she admits students are scared. >> it's definitely not funny, and when you do and if you do get caught it's still a felony. these kids need to know you're about to ruin your life over a joke. >> the school sent out a letter to parents today talking about temporary measures and added security changes. tonight at 11:00, a police officer accused of assault on the job. >> he pulled my breast out of my shirt and put his mouth right on it. >> now we uncovered red flags before he was even hired. >> this didn't fall through the

cracks. this was negligence. >> and we asked why the city ignored them. >> are we going to be able to speak with you at all? >> more questions and growing concerns about why a police officer was ever given a badge, a gun and any responsibilities. >> tonight we hear details of report reported sexual assaults right in uniform. asking tough questions. who dropped the ball and who turned a blind eye? >> reporter: behind these weary eyes carla is carrying her own me too story. and in her account the alleged perpetrator wore a city of chester police uniform and badge. >> i'm not crying because i'm scared. i'm crying because i'm mad. because he took advantage of the situation. >> reporter: she said she first saw officer albert ross in august 2016 as they road an elevator together. initially she felt him poking at

her side. when the elevator doors opened she says he grabbed her belt loop and pulled her back inside. >> he pulled my belt and kissed and came up and kissed my mouth. and i'm shocked. nobody ever expects that to happen. >> reporter: she's one of four women now set to testify against ross. what do you have to say about the allegations against you, sir? the former officer said nothing outside a hearing last month. his alleged victims claimed ross each assaulted them while on the job in the city of chester. but the incidents that occurred on chester's watch are not the first allegations against the former officer. and late last summer we got a phone call saying that chester city council knew about the earlier concerns and looked the other way. former police commissioner joe bayo was in ross's review for

the city council. he said ross acknowledged he'd been fired from his delaware county prison because of a sexual harassment claim and admitted to leaving the chester housing authority pd after allegations of unwanted sexual contact. he believes the interview process should have stopped there. >> you don't do this. if you know they have this prior problem, you don't do it. >> reporter: but bayo and ron linderman insists ross had an influential leader on his side. they say council woman portia west helped get him the job. she was pushing for him even knowing? >> yes. >> she said she knew him. >> she actually said she was a friend of his mother's and he was a really good boy. >> reporter: they both said they were so concerned about ross' history they tried to contain it. they show at least on two separate occasions both men

refused to sign ross' state credentialing letter. without the letter ross wasn't allowed to patrol on the streets. but after they left their leadership roles of the city, he was made a full officer. his charges of assault came only a year and a half later. >> we told them more than once. and we drew thei ire of the entire council because we told them for weeks. >> reporter: for weeks we tried to and council woman ross why he was hired. when it ended she couldn't walk away fast enough. we're trying to talk to you about albert ross, ma'am. from behind these closed doors she slipped out a back exit. a spokesperson says the city solicitor has told employees not to speak about the situation because of pending litigation. >> they gave him a position and

a badge to go around doing this. >> reporter: reporting in chester for investigators, george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> in january a magistrate judge ruled there is sufficient evidence for the cases against ross to move forward. his first pretrial conference is set for this coming monday. new at 11:00, women accusing a delaware county lawmaker of sexual assault and domestic violence. two women have filed a complaint against republican state representative nick nick rely. he denies the allegations and says he had consensual relationships with his accusers. right now chief meteorologist tammy sousa tracking strong winds. we're going to time it out for you in just four mints. but first let's go to nbc 10's drew smith in wildwood to show how people are getting ready for

this storm. >> reporter: these bulk head walls are the first line of defense, but by the way things are shaping up, the water could be pouring over at high tide. so tonight officials are asking people to strap down things loose because it could end up ninety-two flood. >> this area is really taking a beating. >> reporter: but it won't be ready for the third storm. >> you have to work around that and keep the boat ready. >> reporter: the warnings are already up on the way well into west wildwood where the mayor says they'll check. right now it's calm as a lake but won't be that way for long. >> i'm hoping everything changes and we get west winds and everything goes up north. but if it doesn't, we're going to be ready. >> this storm isn't just

threatening the shore. our entire area could get hammered with rain and wind. first alert meteorologist tammy sousa is timing out the chances for your exact neighborhood in three minutes. but first an nbc 10 exclusive. we are making the dream come true for a woman who's been searching her entire life for a woman she never knew. >> that woman reached out to us after she learned nbc 10 interviewed her mom decades ago. bringing mom and daughter together in a reunion 30 years in the making. >> most of these pictures are from times that my grandma -- >> reporter: jordain has some family snapshots. she has no idea what her mom looks like. >> how much did you wonder about her growing up? >> every day of my life. >> reporter: her mom dad when she was a baby.

>> when i did anded my grandmother it was the hurt i saw in her face. >> reporter: with a son of her own now she started searching. she heard her mom had been interviewed by nbc 10 decades ago. we combed through our archives from the '80s and found the images of the mother sharday had no memory of. we took the video to her so she could see the image of her mom. oh, my goodness. >> reporter: she held tight to her cousin making a fresh start. 32 years of emotion poured out as sharday sees herself in her

mother's arms. nbc 10 found a second story about her mom, too. her mom's funeral. five days after the long ago interview with nbc 10's sherry banks ivan died from years of drug use. a baby lost her mother that day. but today isn't about loss. >> i love my baby. >> i love you too, mom. >> reporter: it's about hearing her mom's voice. >> to go out there and face the world and to have something to fall back on, to be a good mother. >> reporter: seeing her face and seeing how she looked. >> all my life i felt like there was something missing and i just got that last puzzle piece. and it's complete now. it's complete. >> so glad we could do that for her. >> and they look so much alike.

>> they sure do. well, we also learned while this ends the mystery for her it does not end her journey. >> sharday tells us she wants to meet her mom's doctor and maybe get in advocacy. >> we'll follow up on that. back now to your first alert weather. you're looking at ocean city, new jersey, where it is definitely the calm before the storm tonight. first alert radar shows this major coastal storm churning towards us. so let's get right to chief meteorologist tammy sousa for more. >> you'll have a little bit of time tomorrow to prepare or do a built of running around. friday frankly you shouldn't go out unless you absolutely have to anywhere across the area. downed trees and power lines from the high winds. this is on friday mainly. coastal roads could be flooded. that's going to be on friday night into saturday. and we're going to see periods

of heavy rain starting tomorrow, late in the day through friday morning. and then we're going to see heavy mountain snow. some of that could drift over to the lehigh valley. these are the impacts you're going to be facing between tomorrow night and early on saturday. everything is quiet on the doppler radar right now, but that is not going to stay. we have a little wave going past us. what we're watching is this big wave right down here. it's going to move past the area brvyng rain and pounds us with the surf and high winds and with the heavy rain. so we're going to be watching temperatures when you wake up in the morning in the 60s are gone for now, but the 40s not too bad. we'll have clouds and see the rain moving in early in the afternoon. we'll make it into the 50s tomorrow, so we'll be pretty mild. watch what happens. heavy rain at times prapts even

a few embedded thunderstorms. we're not expecting severe weather, though. as we go into friday morning we're going to continue to see the rain. things are going to start to dry out in delaware, but then we get this burst of cold air coming in. the temperatures across our entire area are above freezing unless you're in the poconos. so this could be a wintery mix friday night. any accumulation would be an gras grassy areas and this whole thing out of her thursday morning. allentown 50, philadelphia 48. this is going to bring down those power lines, those trees. this is going to cause a lot of trouble with the air travel. we are going to see high tide saturday morning and saturday evening between 8:00 and 11:00 in the morning, 8:00 and 11:00 at night. we're going to see roads

possibly along the shorelines in delaware and new jersey possibly covered with water. you can follow all this on our app. now, the coastal storm. look at this. we're going to see the greatest effect of wind from jersey right on up to philadelphia. the coastal flood is for the jersey and delaware show. the heavy rain going to be part for parts of new jersey right on into parts of the philadelphia suburbs and parts of the lehigh valley. and the heavy snow is going to be right up here in the poconos where again we could see more than a half of foot of snow. your ten day on ten with that heavy rain starting in the afternoon. friday that's the day to stay in. we could see the coastal flooding on saturday, and sunday at this point looks very please want. we'll be back right after this. more and more student debt is keeping people from doing what they love.
