with the very latest for us, steve? >> reporter: here's what happened this morning at about 7:to. a crew was working on the crane here and they were lifting the crane when they noticed the water was bubbling out from underneath the street here. and it was in fact discovered that a 24-inch water main was broken underneath. authorities were called immediately and about 200 customers here in cliffside park lost water. water pressure is also been affected in surrounding communities. this crane will be removed carefully now. fills say as the -- officials say as the issue of whether the crane was too heavy for this street will be examined. >> that will certainly be something that we look into as far as the cause of why the water main broke. i think logically you could say that weight played a factor in the water main breaking. >> reporter: now, the county will be bringing in its own crane expert to look at everything that went on here

today. united water here is saying and advising poo residents -- to residents of the cliffside park and port lee and englewood cliffs, they are advising that everyone boil their water for drinking consumption or brushing their teeth. that advisory by the way is in effect until further notice. live in cliffside park, steve langford, cbs2 news. >> steve, thank you. after it comes the clean-up on long island and towns on the north shore are now sorting through mounds of debris after yesterday's powerful storms and they were hit hard and nearly 13,000 customers are still without power. cbs2's andrea grymes shows thus damage. >> reporter: driving through receive talk it this morning and -- setauket this morning. here on quaker path in stony brook cars and trucks took turns navigating. a common sight in the area.

>> it's horrible. it's horrible. if there was an emergency it would be big trouble. >> reporter: yesterday morning's freak storm blew through with straightline winds at near tropical storm levels. pseg long island says nearly 900 workers are trying to get electricity back up and running with help from surrounding utility companies. from the grounds to high in the sky over the man's home in setauket crews worked to clear debris from the massive trees that came crashing down. >> it's quite a sight. isn't it? >> reporter: we first introduced you to barbara man and her husband last night showing you the extensive damage the their roof. their deck and where a tree limb came through their study. this morning the couple sorted through clothes after spending the night at a hotel. they were waiting to hear if the rear of the house was structurally sound. >> they haven't told us if we can live in the house while the work is being done.

>> reporter: across the street richard admit he was lucky. >> that's right. i can't believe it. >> reporter: he has some trees down in his yard but nowhere neighbors. he's also one of thousands across suffolk's north shore waiting for power to come back. >> i understand you know. this is major damage and you something up overnight. >> reporter: they expect an additional 225 workers to arrive this afternoon to help the crews already here on the scene restore power. the utility says it hopes to have everyone back on the grid by late tonight. reporting in stony brook, long island, andrea grymes, cbs2 news. >> at the height of the outages more than 85,000 customers were without power. the nypd is asking for the public's help catching a cat burglar. now police say the suspect has been using fire escapes climbing in and out of windows and midtown and that's where cbs2's diane macedo joins us live with the very latest this noon. diane? >> reporter: chris and mary,

police say this man hit at least six times since february 13th breaking into apartments here on 10th avenue and along 49th street. but thanks to this last incident on july 25th, we now know what he looks like. police say this surveillance video captured the moment the serial burglar in "hell's kitchen" got caught in the act. the 24-year-old woman heard a noise outside her window when she went to check it out she found the suspect on her fire escape. police say once he saw her he immediately ran away. we showed the video to people in the neighborhood. >> are you surprised to hear habit this happening? >> i actually am because i live right there. and -- i had no idea that this was going on. >> it's very concerning because we have a daughter so we live on the second story. so we'll definitely be locking our windows now that i know this. >> not safe. but i'm pretty sure that police will catch him soon were. >> he was surprised to hear -- >> reporter: but he was surprised to hear this has been going on for sixth months. on february 13th he stole money

and jewelry and electronics and clothing and a credit card. on march 4th he stole from an apartment on west 49th street. then he did the same at two more apartments on the same treat. every time he used a fire escape to enter. is there anything you'd like to see done about this. >> i mean it would be great if they could keep a close watch on the neighborhood while these things are going on. >> at least he sees it and know what is we're watching him and someone will see him soon. >> reporter: and police are surgeonly hoping that this surveillance video will now help to find and catch this guy in the meantime residents in the neighborhood say they'll definitely be knocking both -- locking both doors and windows. live, diane macedo, cbs2 news. thank you. and police have released these images of theman accused o attacking a woman in manhattan. it happened yesterday morning outside a produce store on hot street. police say the man approached the woman and hit her in the back with a sharp metal object cutting her.

she was treated at bellevue hospital and released. a court appearance today for the professional hunter who allegedly helped kill a protected lion in africa. he led the hunting trip in zimbabwe for dentist walter palmer of minnesota but authorities say the men lured cecil the lion from a reserve so that palmer could shoot the an man with a bow and arrow. he is accused of preventing an illegal hunt and he denies any wrongdoing and defended hunting in zimbabwe. >> it's an integral part of our country. and it's -- [ inaudible ] if we do not use wildlife there will be no wildlife. >> the judge postponed his trial until next month and palmer went into hiding after the uproar over the incident. in campaign 2016 the stage is set now for tomorrow night's republican presidential debate. the new jersey governor chris christie made the cut. he used to determine the ten participants and he has been in a three way race with ohio governor kasich and former

texas governor rick perry for the final two slots. perry didn't make it and donald trump will be positioned at the center of the stage as the front runner. republican presidential contender jeb bush vows to cut funding for planned parenthood if elected. speaking to a group of voters in nashville yesterday, the former florida governor said this -- >> you could take dollar for dollar although i'm in the sure we need a half a billion dollars for women's health issues, but if you took dollar for dollar, there are many extraordinarily fine organizations. >> the bush campaign later issued a statement saying he misstoke and that the candidate was only referring to $500 million in funding for planned parenthood not all women's health funding. investigators are looking into the security used to protect hillary clinton's private e-mail system. in a statement, clinton's attorney says the fbi wants to make sure e-mails were properly stored and secured. clinton's exclusive use of a private e-mail when she was secretary of state has been the subject of near constant attention since march.

late last month the state department disclosed that some ovulary mails contained classified information that was not identified correctly. clinton has repeatedly denied she ever sent classified investigation. well, president obama is making his case to the american public about the nuclear arms deal with iran and speaking right now at american university. mr. obama says this is important to engage with a hostile nation in the hopes of achieving peace. the president says it's the same argument that spurred the 1963 nuclear talks between president kennedy and the soviets during the cold war. president obama called the iran decision the most important foreign policy debate in more than a decade. coming up next, the nypd sounding the alarm on a synthetic drug. >> i thought it was heroin and i had a heart attack. >> police say the drug caused this scene and makes people violent but why is it so easy to get? >> and deflate-gate testimony released. what tom brady said under oath. >> and plus, the major company offering more time for parents.

this comes after police raised serious concerns about synthetic marijuana. cbs2's ilana gold has the story. >> reporter: nypd sounding the alarm on synthetic marijuana. also known as k2 or spice. and it's a problem that's plaguing central harlem. just this week, investigators seized 10,000 packets from the area. but people across new york city have noticed the devastating impact. >> people are falling over and seizing and they're -- >> yesterday there was four people that we had to call 911 for. because they were -- had a problem from it. from k 1 second quarter. >> reporter: the drug taking a toll on the homeless because it's so accessible and police say they illegally sell the marijuana for $5 a packet and it leads to a violent and unpredictable reaction. in the disturbing video given out by the nypd you can see a naked and homeless man under the influence in brook line. and nypd commissioner bratton tells us arresting people on the drug is difficult and dangerous. >> these individuals many of

them under the influence of this drug totally crazy. that superhuman strength and impervious to pain. so some of the normal takedowns that we would use are not going to work. >> reporter: arnold cohen with the partnership for the homeless tells us something has to change fast. >> our shelters have become a -- a poor substitute for our mental health services and that can't continue. >> reporter: he says the city has to step in and give more support to mental help services but it's not just the about funding. >> the real question is how are these services going to be delivered and where are the services going to be delivered? the s that's significant and that's the question that we need to ask the mayor. >> reporter: mayor de blasio planned o address the issue this afternoon but postponed it until tomorrow. the city will apparently spend $6 billion over the next four years to create programs and find beds for the homeless and give them vouchers the pay for housing. ilana gold, cbs2 news.

minutes and go you're feting out go this -- if you're getting out there this afternoon don't forget the sunscreen. the showers north and west. the potential for some showers i should say. will be keeping an eye on that. and also watching this rainmaker and its potential impact on our area into friday. here's how the models are handling it. they're bringing in a few showers this afternoon. but remember, they're picking up at the possibility of moisture in the atmosphere. surface still pretty dry to support some of that but can't rule out the isolated shower or even a storm this afternoon or tonight. keyword there isolated. not a lot of coverage or strength. thursday fine. but increasing clouds during the course of the day. and then you get a sense of that low that's trying to bring in some moisture. so heading down to maybe cape may or atlantic city you could see some showers on friday. and definitely it will be cool and gray there. but the bulk to have low is going to head out so yesterday's thinking had it fart every to the north and -- farther to the north and hugging the coast. now models are pushing it further to the south. there's the potential for some wet weather for southern parts
