this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, august 7th, 2015. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm alison harmelin in for anne-marie green. the republican presidential candidates will be back on the campaign trail this morning after last night's first debate. the ten top white house hopefuls showed their combative sides. they traded barbs over hot button issues like immigration. a third party run. craig boss will in cleveland. >> reporter: fireworks at the start from the first primetime republican presidential debate of the 2016 election. donald trump went after the moderators as well as the other republicans on the stage. the other republicans fired back and the tone remained testy. billionaire businessman donald trump was center stage in a debate on the fox news channel and he came out swinging. >> mr. trump --

>> reporter: he was the only republican candidate who couldn't promise he won't run as an independent. >> i'm talking about a lot of leverage. we want to win and we will win. >> he's already hedging his bets because he's used to buying politicians. >> well, i've given you plenty of money. >> reporter: the primetime exposure was a chance to get their message across. >> freedom is not free. >> we have a republican house and a republican senate and we don't have leaders that honor their commitments. >> economic growth is the key to everything, but once you have economic growth it is important that we reach out to people who live in the shadows, the people who don't seem to ever think they get a fair deal. >> reporter: republicans agreed the immigration system needs to be overhauled but disagreed on how to do it. >> we need to control our border. it's our responsibility to pick and choose who comes in. >> we need jeb to build a wall. we need to keep illegals out.

>> i also believe we need a fence. the problem is if el chapo builds a tunnel under the fence we need to deal with that, too. >> reporter: they also spared about the nsa. >> i don't trust president obama with our records. i know you gave him a hug. >> the hugs that i remember are the hugs that i gave to the families who lost people on september 11th. >> reporter: a strong performance in this debate can give a candidate momentum. there are 50 weeks to go before a nominee is elected. >> the candidates attacked an iran nuclear deal and iran gets everything they want. >> reporter: the candidates also took aim at democratic front-runner hillary clinton. >> probably the russian and chinese government know more about hillary clinton's e-mail server than do the members of the united states congress. >> reporter: one of them will likely be back for the gop nomination as the party nominee. donald trump got the most speaking time with more than 11 minutes.

rand paul was at the other end with about 5:30. in cleveland, craig boswell, cbs news. >> craig boswell reporting for us in cleveland. craig, thank you. the campaign continues this morning and the gop candidates are sharing their reactions to the debate. brian webb's been talking to political analysts about who might pick up new momentum. brian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, alison. donald trump stole the show. he drew cheers and boos from the crowd and apolloogized for nothing. >> we're going to win this thing. thank you all very much. >> reporter: shortly after the debate jeb bush continued his push for the gop nomination. but if last night was any indication, political experts say it may be months before the crowded field of contenders is narrowed down. >> no one had a big gaffe that would disqualify them. most of the candidates, i would say seven or eight of them, had at least one very strong answer that they can be proud of.

>> you're not going to make the pledge. >> i will not make the pledge at this time. >> okay. >> reporter: donald trump drew boos for the crowd for refusing to rule out running as an independent, something many see as a threat to the republicans winning the white house. >> donald trump is seen as that threat i think you're going to see a lot of republicans say, wait a second, why are we getting on this. >> reporter: he managed to win google searches for his rhetoric. >> the evidence is now clear that the majority of people coming across the border are not from mexico. they're coming from guatemala, el salvador, honduras. >> reporter: before the debate the lower candidates participated in a happy hour debate. >> hillary clinton lies about benghazi, she lies about e-mails, she is still defending planned parenthood and she is still her party's front-runner. >> reporter: the only woman

running on the republican side. pundants say she could now be the one to watch. and analysts giving high marks to governor john kasich who was in front of his home state crowd. there are still 50 weeks to go before a nominee is selected. >> thank you, brian. donald trump didn't only lash out at his rivals on stage, he also drew applause when he spoke out about rosie o'donnell. >> mr. trump, one of the things people love about you is you speak your mind and you don't use a politician's filter, however, that is not without its down sides, in particular when it comes to women. you've called women you don't like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals. your twitter account dnchts only rosie o'donnell. >> he was referring to a long term spat with a liberal entertainmenter. trump said the country doesn't have time for, quote, total political correctness.

minutes later he appeared to explain writing try to explain that to your kids. the gop political hopefuls participated in their own debate. several took aim at front-runner donald trump. >> one thing i like to remind people is back in 2007 rudy giuliani was leading the polls for a year. part of that was his celebrity. >> since he has changed his mind on amnesty, health care and abortion. i would just ask what are the principals on which he will govern. >> the democrats will get their chance to debate in the fall. the first debate is set for october 13 of the in nevada. at the same time as the gop debate hillary clinton attended a fund raiser in los angeles with 250 supporters including chris jenner. kim kardashian was in attendance and posted a selfie.

coming up we'll speak with scott walker and john kasich. millions across the lower half of the country and the midwest face the threat of severe weather. storms are forecast today from the southeast to the southwest and into the upper midwest. hot, hue mitd air will settle in from texas to louisiana. heat indexes could exceed 110 degrees. a possible tornado caused serious damage in alabama walmart and nearby sporting goods store. the storm ripped off part of the roof and littered the inside with debris. it flipped an 18-wheeler. one person was taken to the hospital. parts of south carolina are cleaning up this morning. severe thunderstorms delivered heavy rain and wind across the northern half of the state. they brought down trees and damaged power lines in spartanburg. thousands of homes lost power. storm damage forced the north carolina zoo to close today. severe thunderstorms ripped through ash borrow thursday afternoon thoking down trees. an exhibit's glass door was shattered.

the zoo says no people or animals were injured. crews are making gains fighting the california wildfires. the massive rocky fire is 45% contained. hundreds of evacuees were allowed to return. the the fires destroyed over 100 buildings including 43 homes. it's burned 109 square miles. taiwan is bracing for a massive storm this morning. the super typhoon soudelor is on track to hit the island. the storm is going to make landfall tomorrow. it's already claimed at least two lives. millions of workers and school children have been told to stay home and china has begun coastal evacuations. a leading democrat said he's opposed to the deem with iran. new york governor chuck schumer said he will oppose the deal with iran. he said there's a risk for them to continue their, quote,

a spill in colorado sent 1 million gallons of mine waste down a river thursday. the environmental protection agency said that a federal cleanup team was working with heavy equipment when it caused the spill. officials say the spill is no threat to drinking water. the death toll from the leej nars disease outbreak is growing. ten people have died from the disease so far in new york city and a woman died in cleveland, ohio. it's the first case outside of the south bronx from this outbreak. on the cbs "moneywatch," apple's wsite gets a reboot and the case of the stolen stradivarius is solved.
