ushering in big waves for long island. exercise caution there. buddy system for all of our beaches today. 83 at 3:00. about 84 for a high right where we should be. we are going to see some changes this week. we'll talk more about that in a bit. right now, though, right back to the desk. our top story this morning, the state health inspectors will be back in the bronx looking for legionella bacteria in the cooling towers. >> mayor de blasio said the outbreak has been contained but five more buildings tested positive yesterday. the number of cases is 108. there hasn't been a new case in five days but the risk still remains in the bronx. ilana gold has more from the melrose section of the bronx. >> the bronx county hall of justice is one of the buildings that just tested positive for the bacteria. but it is possible even more can be affected. teams from the health department will be back in this area testing dozens of buildings. >> reporter: state health

inspectors have another tough jobs ahead of them today. they plan to take water samples from 42 cooling towers across the south bronx that supply air conditioning and send them to a lab for testing. >> this is literally uncharted territory and it is important we acknowledge that. we have never seen an outbreak of legionnaires' like this in the city. >> they're focussed on 100 cooling towers in five sections of the bronx, fordham, mt. eden, hunts point, mott haven and high bridge. they tested 57 on friday after the bronx borough president asked the governor to get involved and help control the outbreak that killed 10 people since july. >> we're here today to help manage this process. we're in constant communication with all level of government including the city. >> reporter: the city revealed five new sites where the health department found traces of bacteria, all in populated areas. they include a verizon build,

housing court, post office and samuel gumpers high school. all have been treated and disinfected for the bacteria. >> they told my parents a few times that i was on the verge of not making it. >> reporter: daniel tejada, more than 100 people infected with legionnaires' disease. >> they took my temperature at the hospital. i think it was 105 or 106. >> reporter: health officials say you can't get it from person to person contact. in the latest cases victims breathe in mist from the affected cooling towers. frustrated. >> people don't maintain their boroughs. >> that's what it comes down to. >> that is what i think. >> reporter: they need assurance they won't get sick. >> this thing is something the city should take care of, and they're not. >> the cooling towers that tested positive for the bacteria disinfected. the health department says there

is no need for anyone to worry. now, those teams will head out for more inspections in the next few hours and we'll let you know what they find out. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. now to a developing story out of afghanistan. a u.s. soldier has been killed and several more wounded in a series of attacks in kabul. the wave of attacks left 40 people dead and more than 300 injured. the taliban has claimed responsibility for at least two bombings. crews are expected to resume their search for a missing kayaker in dutchess county. the kayak carrying a man and woman capsized in the hudson river near historic mills mansion in staatsburg. a passing boat picked up the woman, 22-year-old tali fruchtmann but the man disappeared. he's 32-year-old ian jones. the two were not wearing life jackets. new this morning a queens mom is now facing second-degree murder charges in the death of her newborn baby.

according to police sources 21-year-old rashida choudhury confessed yesterday to throwing her 19-day-old son out of a fourth-story window saying she believed he was possessed. a neighbor found his lifeless body friday and called 911. the medical examiner said the infant died of mrunt impact injuries and skull fractures. police are looking for a man who groped a woman on the subway on friday. this is the man they want to talk to. the woman was on the platform of the atlantic subway in park slope at 6:30 in the evening when this man touched himself in front of her. he boarded the train with her and grabbed her from behind. the woman took this picture of him and gave it to the police. surveillance video captured these images in brooklyn who police say attempted to rape a woman on her way home. investigators say he approached the woman on 16th street and sunset park and asked her to let him into the building. when she refused he exposed himself and pushed her to the ground.

the suspect ran away when the woman screamed. a new jersey burglar accidentally dialed 911 and gave the cops details about his next robbery before he committed it. branchburg police say almost two weeks ago they received a call in which they could hear a man talking about the details of a robbery. they traced the cell phone too 42-year-old scott esser. they wanted him to act and he's under arrest for that and other burglaries in new jersey. last near the internet was on fire with ice videos. the ice bucket challenge were everywhere. even some of us at cbs 2 got into it. the media campaign is trying to make a big comeback. >> ice ice ice. >> reporter: hundreds of people cooled off for a good cause. and took the als ice bucket challenge in central park. >> how was it? >> it was awesome, actually. i didn't think i would enjoy it so much. >> did you do anything like this before? >> no, but i probably would do it again.

officials said a hiker found dead in yellow stone was attacked by a grizzly bear. the man's body was found in an off-trail area. investigators say they found an adult female and one cub were involved in the attack. he was from montana. a vermont woman who lost custody of her 9-year-old daughter gunned down the social worker involved in her case. she also is accused of shooting three relatives found dead in their home. emotions in ferguson are running high after the one-year anniversary of the death of michael brown. his family laid teddy bears on the spot where was killed. the police officer that killed him was cleared of any wrong doing.

the family led a four and a half mile march to normandy high school where brown had graduated. >> there was a loss but a lot of good that came out of my son. he's still with us. >> we don't think things like this should happen in america. >> another march will happen today and stop for a moment for a moment of silence before noon. a college football player was shot. 19-year-old christian walker was shot and killed around 1:00 a.m. when officers responded to a burglary call after the teen smashed his car through the window of a car dealership. officer brad miller reportedly altercation. miller who has only been on the force since last september is now on administrative leave. some good news for side sleepers that may protect your brain. sleeping on your side makes it

easier for the brain to get rid of waste products from the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. some of that can lead to alzheimer's, parkinson's and other dementias. many parents know the frustration and worry when their child is a picky either. many parents worry when their child is a picky either. a new study shows the problem is common. dr. max gomez said it could signal more serious issues for some kids. >> reporter: leo was a happy, healthy 3-year-old. like many children his age he's a picky either. >> if it was up to leo, what would he eat all day? >> pasta, bread, anything that has carbs in it. >> reporter: it can be frustrating and worrisome for any parents. a duke university study in the journal pediatrics suggests it could be a signal of ee notional issues. the study shows 20% of children ages 2 to 6 are selective eaters.

3% are considered severely selective and more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression. >> normal picky either is a kid who doesn't want his carrots to touch, his fish sticks, mashed potato and broccoli and when they see the green of the broccoli they'll pick it out. >> reporter: treatment for extreme cases could include therapy or even medication. for the majority of kids, though, who are more likely to outgrow the problem, the doctor recommends parents work with children. don't give them other options and grind up fruits and vegetables into their meals. >> how sit? >> it is good. >> it is good? >> yeah. >> reporter: the large majority of picky eaters will not develop mental health issues but it is something to watch for. kid pick up on subtle cues from parents. so set a good example for your child. i tell my kids you don't have to

at least once. dr. max gomez, cbs 2 news. >> the study found even kids who were considered moderate selective eaters were more likely to develop anxiety. >> in the diane macedo house you had had to eat. a dog vanished a decade ago. boozer, the boxer, is back with his original owner after disappearing from their back yard in tennessee in 2006. another family adopt the -- adopted the lost dog until they moved and couldn't keep him. they brought him back to a shelter in colorado and the dog had a micro chip which was scanned. >> it is like getting a member of the family back. >> i didn't ever expect to see him again. >> we didn't know if he was mistreated. so it was tough, very tough. >> animal experts say it is

that sets the stage for the needed rain on tuesday. i tell you what, it is another nice one as showers and thunderstorms late monday west, and for more of the area through the day on tuesday. so remember that. tuesday is the busy weather day of the week and the rest of the week comfortable. it will be a little warmer today, flirting with normal conditions, unlike the start of the month we have been below normal and will be for a good part of the week. you are going to feel more humidity definitely tuesday. of course, you need that humidity. you need the lowest ledges of the atmosphere primed for the into tuesday. it gets you rolling with a smile and some sun this morning. waves. moderate rip current risk. way. high pressure today, weakens tomorrow. heavy rain into parts of the land of lincoln. going to the beach, lucky you. 83 fort jersey shore.

spanish onions are incredibly flavorful. >> what to look for when shopping for them at the grocery store. >> in particular we'll look at the spanish onion. it is beautiful. it is a great time to buy them. you want to look for a few key things, the first of which you want to be sure it has a dry papery exterior. make sure there are no moist and wet spots. that means it is start to go decay. you want to make sure the entire bulb is nice and firm. when you bring your onions home store them in a cool, dry place. spanish onions are great to saute because they caramelize beautifully. when it come to cutting onions the best thing to do to ward yourself off from crying is use a sharp knife.

likely caused the accident. the victims include a one-month-old boy, a two--year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl and four adults. a new jersey woman is in critical condition after a husband allegedly shot her eight times when he found out she filed for divorce. she identified mark harrison as the shooter. her three children were not home at the time. a man hunt is under way at this hour for two accused serial rapists. the police released this photo of isiah rivera and 26-year-old joey cruz seen on the right. they have raped at least three women. the last reported incident was just this past tuesday when police say one of the men agreed to meet a woman at her gram mercy avenue apartment -- gramercy avenue apartment. president obama is saying his agreement with iran to curb its nuclear program could lead to a constructive relationship

between the u.s. and iran. the president did say he does not believe that will take place immediately. his nuclear plan has come under fire by some politicians including new york senator chuck schumer. a powerful typhoon is hitting china with heavy rain forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate. one million homes are without power after the typhoon made landfall in mainland china last week. at least 22 people are dead or missing. the storm has triggered mud slides, downed trees and destroyed dozens of homes. well when pope francis comes to new york next month he'll celebrate mass using simple wooden furniture made by a chosen few. >> lou young has more on this labor of love. >> do we have any instructions? simple, simple. >> keep it simple. >> reporter: cardinal dolan checked on the progress of the preparations for pope francis's september visit to new york.

a wooden throne being built in a port chester garage by immigrant day laborers who may or may not have legal status. no one is asking. >> these are men who look for work. they can't get a job every day, so they get work when they can. >> reporter: but here they volunteer their presence and example of this pope's overriding concern for the underclass. more work is under way for a school for troubled teens who have work assignments of their own. >> the kids are in here doing all of the work. >> this is where the pope will stand at madison square garden. you see the pulpit beginning to take shape. and over here, this is the altar, where he will say mass. the archdiocese could have everybody build these pieces but the cardinal had some very specific ideas. >> from the beginning he said part of his mission as a successor of st. peter is to go out to those to the side of the road.

wow, look at that live shot out there as you look at the hudson river, the statue of liberty in the background. 69 degrees, so comfortable. john elliott will have the full forecast coming up in a few minutes. another fire is causing damage out west. a large wildfire in arizona keeps spreading near the border with nevada and california. 150 homes have already been evacuated. authorities say the fire sparked

in a wildfire refuge yesterday afternoon. they're calling it the willow fire. and 20 new york state workers are heading west to help fight those wildfires. the group from the department of environmental conservation will go to california, oregon and washington. they'll help contain the fires for the next two weeks. the u.s. forest services said one of its firefighters was killed in lake tahoe area. he died after getting struck by a tree. it is considered one of the world. new zealander kim chame chambers became the first to complete it. chambers swam in shark infested waters for more than 17 hours, not always knowing if she was going to make it. >> it was a really tough swim. i was pretty ill in the middle of the night and i couldn't keep any food down so i actually thought my swim was over because
