collided with an suv and hit a liquor store this morning at the intersection of springfield and sanford avenues here in new jersey. this happened just after 8:00 this morning. the school bus was carrying children on the way to school. surveillance video from a store on the corner captured the bus sailing through intersection without turning right or left. and instead striking the building straight ahead after getting slammed by a toyota rav 4. you can see people running and scrambling to help the children. a woman called 911 and says the bus driver claimed she couldn't stop. >> i didn't speak to her. she came out and she was saying my god, my brakes went off on me. and that was it. and i told her, it's okay, it's going to be fine. and that was it. >> reporter: she says the children were all very scared, some more hurt than others. and officials say the local buildings department will be here to check out the building stability. the school bus has been towed away. police confirm the driver says her brakes did fail.

and that's that is under investigation. and the injuries are not life threatening but we are told nine of the 11 children were special needs children on their way to a school in west orange. all were alert when they take on the the hospital. live in new jersey, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. parts of the new jersey turnpike have re-opened hours after a fiery crash involving -- involving two tractor- trailers. >> reporter: traffic this afternoon once again moving smoothly in all six northbound lanes here near. all the wreckage has -- here near exit 9. all the wreckage has been cleaned up after the huge fire. commuters and people who live near the crash site grateful for a somewhat normal morning rush today. chopper 2 over the scene as crews repaired the damaged guardrail, charred and mangled after this. a huge plume of flames consuming the northbound outer

truck lanes of the new jersey turnpike near exit 9. >> my god. >> reporter: the fire ball erupting after two tractor- trailers collided around 8:00 wednesday night. >> we heard the screech of the trucks before they collided and then it was just smoke and explosion after explosion. >> reporter: charred debris in the yards of people whose backyards back up to the highway. and neighbors getting a view of the action, at first, not realizing what was happening. >> boom, boom, boom. and it was so strong that the house was shaking. the door, you could feel the vibration. >> it was pretty cloud and scary. we didn't know when it was going to stop or spread. >> reporter: just as terrified, drivers in their cars as powerful explosions went off one after another. one of the tractor-trailers carrying paper, the other medical supplies including oxygen tanks. the drivers of the tractor-

trailers amazingly able to walk away. as firefighters worked to get control of the flame, traffic backed up for miles and crews working through the night to make repairs. the drivers of both tractor- trailers were able to walk away with only minor injuries. reporting from new jersey, cbs 2 news. new york city will try to battle the outbreak. >> reporter: well, there are a few events going on as it pertains to the disease. today the mayor is expected to talk about it later this afternoon in bronx. meantime, here at city hall, the city council in about an hour from now is expected to vote on legislation to help combat future outbreaks. every building in new york city would have to register its

cooling towers and inspect them regularly on a new law poised to pass the city council this afternoon. >> we don't know the buildings with cooling towers and the mechanism by which owners are cleaning or maintaining or inspecting their cooling towers to begin with. >> reporter: the city council woman's district includes part of the south bronx, site of the current outbreak. officials believe it stems from bacteria and then sprayed out in a mist from the towers. the vote comes one day after the healthcare department announced the latest statistics. nine new buildings in bronx tested positive for the bacteria, including saint barnabas hospital which has been disinfected and the rest of the buildings have been disinfected or are in the process. the number of people infected has gone up to 119 but there are no new cases with onset symptoms since august 3rd. the number of people who died still stands at 126789

officials point out all of them also had other medical conditions. so people really shouldn't be too alarmed that it was found in more buildings? >> absolutely not. this is something that we are obviously very much expecting and that's why the legislation that the we will pass later today is important. >> reporter: the disease is a form of few moania that's usually treatable with medication. it is not contagious. city council members and the mayor hope the new law will help prevent future outbreaks. and building owners who do not comply l would face fines up to $5,000. -- comply would face fines up to $5,000. and some building owners have expressed concerns about the fines. for now, reporting live, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. commuters are getting an idea of what is in store when pope francis comes to town next month. transit officials say expect

crowd, delays and enhanced security. we are live from newark's penn station. >> reporter: mary, the pope isn't coming to the new jersey but transportation officials in the garden state preparing for major traffic grid lock because of the pope's visit to manhattan and philadelphia. and they're even telling regular commuters to stay away from the city. >> i would even go so far as to say, if you don't have to be on the system between thursday and sunday, this the 24th to the 27th, you may want to consider a staycation and saying put. >> reporter: pope francis will be in manhattan starting september 4th. he will address the united nations and holding a mass friday night the 25th inside madison square garden. and new jersey transit will have extra buss and trains. >> we are beefing up the bus service in and out of the bus terminal. and we have 30,000 rail seats going in and out between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.

if we need to, we will put a couple extra train sets on. but again, that's a ticketed event. there are 25,000 tickets to madison square garden. >> reporter: and they'll increase security but in terms of traffic, they are focusing on the philadelphia visit. his holy father will hold a huge public mass at the city's museum of art. it's a trip many residentses will take. >> while estimates are for 2 million people, the state of new jersey is preparing, if there additional people show up. >> reporter: the most traveled bridge the ben franklin connecting new jersey to philadelphia will close friday night and won't re-open until monday. >> wear comfortable shoe, you will be doing a lot of walking. wear light colored clothing. it's the return from the event that will likely be in darkness. >> reporter: now officials also warning that charter buses and

the death toll climbed in the deadly explosions in china. at least 50 people were killed and hundreds more injured after the blast. >> reporter: the explosions turned the night's sky a vivid orange. first one ball of fire and then another even bigger blast. shock waves knocked people off their feet. surveillance video shows doors blowing back into this man. hospitals were indated with

hundreds of wounded, some staggering around, stunned. i was actually quite far from the explosion site, this heavily bandaged security guard said. the the explosions were sparked from a warehouse for hazardous materials. hundreds of cars in the parking lot were left charred shells and windows were shattered in buildings more than a mile away. where is your house? pointing to his apartment, this man told us he was petrified. your windows were blown out. can you describe the explosion? there was fire, i thought it was a plane crash, he said. the building started shaking and my wife and i just ran out. there is no word yet on what caused the blast. state media is reporting that stop management of the company that owns the warehouse has been detained. cbs news, china. some parents get the shock of their lives when a social experiment shows them just how vulnerable their teenage daughters are. with the parents in on it, he

send in pictures and video. well, talk about a lucky guy. a teenager is recovering after spending the night clinging to a buoy after the jet ski went under water. he is being treated for dehydration. he was riding from brooklyn to new jersey tuesday night when he hit a rock. he swam for a mile to a buoy that was off sandy hook. and he tried to get the attention of passing boaters but no one saw or heard him. >> i saw about four or five shooting stars that night. and i prayed and wished on every one i saw, to whatever god there may be. i was just hoping somebody would find me. >> he started heading towards shore wednesday morning. and that's when the coast guard which had been looking for him found him. >> wow. remarkable story there. >> incredible. >> yeah, lucky guy. let's get to john elliott. boy, a nice day today. >> absolutely. the humidity is so comfortable. the sky is so beautiful.

and nice for you. numbers compared to yesterday on arch, a few degrees cooler than we were. and dew points are down as well. so a little cooler, a little less humid. i mean, hard to top yesterday but i think we will. 83 this afternoon. right where we belong. and sunsets at 7:57. and out there, maybe just nine holes, maybe 18, yeah, make sure you have the sunscreen on. uv index is still, the forecast rather is still an 8. and a few clouds. we saw that coming this morning. and you can see a big area of high pressure. it's interesting, models still want to bring in the hint of a shower friday afternoon. that would be well north and west. i think your friday is fine. just more humidity. and there are more bullish on stray showers northwest of the city on saturday. a lot of this will just result in cloud cover and moisture aloft that won't hit ground. so summer streets saturday looks great. it's going to be warm and more humid. and that's going to be the case for the beaches. the numbers are going to be up.
