sponsored by -- bill: matt jones from the left rough. what kind of lie is this, david? david: the lie is ok but from this side he's going to have to run this in like a links shot. always difficult. actually played it very well. very difficult to get it close from there. bill: and it's going to end up on the right side. left hole location. jason day hit a terrific drive. 308. now has 80 yards left. david: and he's in the right spot here. the right-hand side of the fairway. he can throw this in and spin it. bill: that has been the popular
7:05 pm
play today. asking for it to spin but it hops over the ridge. david: just went two feet too far. bill: just beyond it. so that will be a challenging birdie effort upcoming. 14. verne: tony finau for birdie. back to 12 under. and he trails jason day by two. to 15. frank: jordan spieth in the rough. flag. trouble left and right. that's well done. there have been just three birdies at 15 today. golf course. unthinkable. there's only two players really that have won three majors in the same year.
7:06 pm
two of the greats of the game. ben hogan, 1953 and of course tiger woods in that fantastic year of 2000. jordan is trying to be the third. lofty standards for someone just 22 years of age but he's excelled in every department. four adrift at the moment, though. when he burst on the scene we didn't expect this type of season. of course, at the masters, he was brilliant. perhaps the first of many green jackets. the u.s. open at chambers bay, nobody else was better. and then so close at the open championship. just one shot adrift at that playoff. 13 top 10's in 20 starts. really, he's been second to none this year, setting his own standards. many a player in front of him at
7:07 pm
the moment. jason day lead by four. we go back to 13. bill: matt jones. david, big breaker right to left? david: right, bulge in the middle will throw it violently left. bill: started the day with a two-shot lead. currently trails by one. ahead to 14. verne: and the second shot now of justin rose. 104. to the hole. excellent.
7:08 pm
let's go to 13. bill: that's a good look at the trouble to the right off this cliffhanger. jason day. david: you can just see that little slope that comes in from the left edge of the green here. he's going to go up the hill back to the left and then down the hill towards the hole. bill: just over 17 feet. david: difficult one to get on line. can't really hang it out to the right. bill: what a putt! what a putt. and he goes to six under today
7:09 pm
and 15 under with a two-shot advantage in the 97th pga championship. nick: nice way too start the second nine, all threes. bill: to 15. frank: spieth from what has to be at least 90 feet. matt jones did tap it. and that's pretty good. as you can see, this putt here, 91 feet. flag on 32 paces today from that front. so far able to get them all up and down in two.
7:10 pm
next hole is a par 5. it's been reachable for just about everybody in field. wonderful views here at whistling straits. two miles of lakeshore line -- lake shoreline. as we go back to 14. verne: and on the green at the short par 4, here's justin rose for birdie. well done. rose is back to 12 under and three off the pace being set by
7:11 pm
jason day. on the tee. jason day. take a look at this 14th hole. nick? nick: yeah, i enjoy this hole. this is just strategy. justin rose played it perfectly. you hit it far enough down you get a decent look at the flag. you pull it left and you're blind. spin it back and definitely a birdie opportunity at 14. verne: a reminder, he hit it, what, 374 earlier? nick: this is back into the wind. just looking for the right spot with a 3-wood. verne: david? jason: hold your head. david: he's asking it not to
7:12 pm
7:13 pm
in the last hour or go, -- so, at one stage matt jones had a three-shot lead when he teed up on the ninth hole. it's completely changed around. bring in peter kostis and have a look at jason day's swing. peter: it's always fun to look at this golf swing. pay particular attention to how he rotates his body on the full swing. good, full turnaway going back. the hips lead. the left foot and left knee clearing. watch as the left shoulder moves. it continues on behind his neck. the right shoulder coming through. an incredible amount of rotation on the forward swing, one of the reasons why he hit it so high and so solid. frank: that was power personified. speaking of power -- peter: after a terrific tee shot
7:14 pm
by finau, he's got 202 left into the breeze. frank: as you can see, just a mid iron. peter: a 5-iron on the way. very, very high into the breeze. this is going to have to get back there. frank: just short of the flag high. playing back in the breeze today. that's why 15 is the hardest hole on the golf course. to 16. gary: here we go. 574 yards. these guys are just having at this today and he picks up the tee. i'm going to guess that is absolutely perfect, which it is. he might have a go with this one. talking about the 280 range from that place there. the wind just a little bit against him.
7:15 pm
to the 159 tee. frank: justin rose. 200 yards just to get to the fairway. that's not really the issue. it's where it narrows up. around the 300-yard mark. his caddie has been with him for a while. they won a major championship together a few years ago. you see everything in play. it funnels in protected on both sides of the fairway, like most of the holes out here. nick, he has that ability to hole like this nick: he does. he hits a beautiful failed. i'm surprised at how much clubhead speed he gets.
7:16 pm
7:17 pm
52-degree wedge. verne: yeah, i'd say it was perfect. six birdies, an eagle already today. offset, but only minimally, by two bogeys. david: this is the second or third time he's almost holed it on the fly today. verne: now matt jones. david: just 87 yards. and again, you can fly it in behind the hole and there's a slope that will bring it back. if he leaves it a little short, it will kick on. a sand wedge.
7:18 pm
>> get up! david: not going to be happy about it. jim: jason day at the very first. gave us an idea of what might be coming on later in the afternoon. a little harbinger of birdies to come. gave one away, though, at the second. then the third. nick: this was pretty brave at the third. 7-iron. slam. right in there. jim: how many of these shots today are within three feet of the cup? at nine this is really where the streak got going, though. solid.
7:19 pm
jim: had a two-shot swing with jones, in his own pairing. at the ninth, at 10. nick: perfect. and then 11, three birdie shots. a driver -- perfect shots. a driver then a wedge to here and tracks in a perfect three. jim: this is absolute perfection. at 13. didn't expect this one. nick: this is a twister. up the hill right to left and then back. that is definitely making everything. jim: all these stats here, including proximity to the hole with shots from the fairway. he leads the field this week with shots like that. nick: i should think by quite a few feet. they're on some tearing pace, really. this is major and they're on
7:20 pm
track for trying to get to 20 under. jim: 16. jordan: go hard! go, baby, go. gary: he's a great announcer. oh! i guess you win two out of the three and trying to win this one and you get bounces like that. excellent. verne: matt jones. speaking of excellence. nick: did you see that was in the wrong -- you say that was in the wrong spot, guys? they're brushing everything in. right in the heart. verne: and now to maintain his two-shot edge. nick: i have to say, verne, there's now a new standard to golf, isn't there, this year?
7:21 pm
the quality and the scoring, we now have seven guys in double digits. double digits used to be guaranteed to win a major. now you're five back at 10 under par. verne: that's right. ian: i was just thinking exactly the same thing, nick faldo. david: it's not like it's gotten any easier. nick: the quality of the golf courses is better. they've gotten a lot longer. the equipment is a huge difference but it's the numbers i'm so impressed with. 16 guys from eight under and better. verne: birdie-birdie for day and jones. jason day will head to the 15th still maintaining a two-shot edge.
7:22 pm
frank: after a drive and 5-iron, tony finau at 15. peter: uphill at the beginning so has to be careful with the speed. frank: was never really online. to 18. jim: this was earlier, at 18. dustin johnson. just been motoring along. he's made some birdies on the second side. and he knew what he was doing with it too. look at that. cozies it up there close. 15. frank: faye gnaw, finishing out. -- finau, finishing out. he's certainly done well today. back to 18. jim: and after j.b. holmes'
7:23 pm
playing companion made a birdie putt. dustin brushes in the par. a round of 68. he's in tied for eighth at the moment and who knows? tomorrow he could make a run at it. he is seven back but if there's a stumble at the top and if there's anybody who could catch fire, he could be the guy. 15. frank: this is 222 yards. it's a 5-iron for rose. he's got to get every bit of this. nothing wrong. rights in the heart of the green. just get through this with a par. maybe snap a few birdies coming in. let's have loot -- another look at that 5-iron. a nice fade off the tee. let's see what in does.
7:24 pm
plays this one the other way. the versatility of the players today. rose currently at 12 under. jason day really, that run of threes on this second nine have made the difference. just found an extra gear. seven under already. matt jones hasn't really put a foot wrong but now two adriff. dustin johnson has now posted. nine under. the scoring today is just terrific. that rain last night might have softened things but these boys really upped it a gear. mickelson posted a round of 66. he was runner-up last year but you would think too far adrift. the sun settles on lake michigan. still plenty of golf to be played, though. i have an idea we'll see a lot more birdies before the day is
7:25 pm
over. mainly because of this guy. jason day. tee shot at 15. david: no drive and wedge. the breeze has stiffened just a bit. that was into the breeze. that's a huge tee shot. right into the narrow neck. frank: he's thrown everything at whistling straits. now matt jones. he also shot a little draw. overdone it. that might be right. missed the bunker. that's not the thick stuff.
7:26 pm
still going to be a long way to go. some more tents to overcome. 35-year-old australian. let's go up ahead to 16. gary: and we're going to find 6 feet away, jordan spieth. he's making birdies and he's losing ground. that's going to come up short, probably going to be another birdie. the guys in front of him are just lighting it up. i mean, it's been an afternoon of lighting it up. 77 players made the cut. i think now this is going to be 321 birdies if he makes this, and seven eagles for this field. they are killing this golf course, which is, as you've all seen, it's a fright thing landscape.
7:27 pm
it is 7,400 yards. over 1,000 bunkers. and they're making birdies and eagles everywhere. look at this back nine, and he can't gain any ground on anybody. jim: spieth tied for six, five behind. matt jones, he's three under for the day. he's had some rather interesting journeys along the way. an odyssey or two. but jason day is on fire. he leads it 16 under par and we'll be back in a moment.
7:29 pm
always a night of drama and suspense. begins with "ncis: los angeles, "criminal minds" and followed by 48 hours" only cbs. all 18 holes coming your way tomorrow at the pga championship at 2:00 eastern time right here on cbs. 15. frank: justin rose from close to 60 feet. a little mound in it. goes down into the hollow. it might look close but that's still about five feet. to 17. ian: jordan spieth on the tee here of the par 3. jordan: oh, you got to draw, don't you? you got to turn left.
7:30 pm
ian: it is now. and that's exactly what he was talking about. just come in a little bit and feeds down towards the hole. nick: i love the way he screamed at it. he was only four yard right of the flag. ian: exactly. 217 yards today but it's six yards downhill but then coming back into the slight breeze, maybe five to 10 yards of breeze into them. only five birdies and averaging well over par. one of the top five hardest holes. justin rose did make par. frank: and what's the plight of matt jones? david: from 230 yards, ripping a 3-iron at it. frank: another yard to the right might have scooted all the way
7:31 pm
towards the flag. now a lengthy bunk shot. the ball slightly below his feet. let's have a look at the strike there. always have to lead with the left-hand. look at that sharp insole. we see him come perhaps a little out of the toe for that clubface to open up that much. but six straight threes for this man. david: that's amazing. 208 yards left off a suburb tee shot and it's still all of a 5-iron for him. may not be enough to get it there. right in the center of the face again but he's pulled it. frank: that is in the bunker or the rough. you'd really prefer it to be in
7:32 pm
the rough. it's god a -- got a good lie. not plugged. he has plenty of green to work with. really, that's the first bad shot we've seen him hit. that's why this reaction. everything has come out of the middle of the club for the last hour and a half for jason day. he is human. one more look. he's had the 54-hole lead or at least tied it in the last two majors. on the verge of doing it for three straight majors. always leaning. quiet feet. and that's the release. can't have it that far when you're holding back. last australia on the win pga, 20 years ago, steve elkington. ahead to 16.
7:33 pm
gary: setting down a little bit but good angle. -- a lot of green here. peter: all in all, not too bad a lie from where he is. nick: a nice downslope. he can field it off the corner of the green from. gary: that thing shooting forward. peter: nicely judged. beautiful. gary: absolutely perfect. tony finau. he needs that to get to 13 under par. that would leave him three shots back of that gentleman right there, jason day. the mercedes-benz summer event is here. now get the unmistakable thrill and the incredible rush of the mercedes-benz you've always wanted. but you better get here fast... yay, daddy's here! here you go, honey. thank you. ...because a good thing like this phew! won't last forever. see your authorized dealer for an incredible offer on the exhilarating c300 sport sedan.
7:34 pm
7:35 pm
oh. frank: nicely done, mr. jones. now, jason day. david: on any given saturday, this wouldn't be too difficult. he's got to get it up a little, but that's all. plenty of green to work with. are you serious? jason: so much sand in that. david: frank, i did not see that coming. frank: he hit that extra hard, too. jason: what kind of sand is that? david: that's just something you just never see. frank: 17. ian: jordan spieth for the
7:36 pm
birdie. frank: now day. let's have a look at that first bunker shot again. he said there was a lot of sand. nick: if you chop across it a little bit too much, as we know, you get no forward explosion. he went in a long way behind there and the face was very open. coming across it. the sand just splashed to the right. peter: he made a bunker swing expecting a lot less sand and a steeper angle of attack. he would not have entered that far behind had he known there was that much sand. frank: and this was the second attempt. this is one of the better bunker players on tour. only gets it up and down 60% of the time.
7:37 pm
nick: as we know, super soft sands can scare us occasionally. the sand up here is very heavily, isn't it? frank: it certainly is especially when it's been raked a few times, as that bunker has today. there's more than 1,000 bunkers out here, as we go to 16. gary: wow, after that great pitch and after two days of not seeing him miss the center of the hole. he kind of whiffs one from about three feet. back to 15. frank: maybe there's a little bit of pressure involved here right now, nick. nick: there definitely is. tony finau has gone beautifully and now he's walked off this green and his head is spinning. david: where he was in two, if
7:38 pm
you'd told me he was hitting his fifth shot from here, i wouldn't have believed you. good effort. frank: that will be a six, though, and that's recondensed the leaderboard. so matt jones had a three-shot lead. jason day had a two-shot lead and now -- nick: this golf course is so treacherous. you could definitely make a double each day by playing super aggressive golf. couldn't you? frank: certainly can. nick: really could. frank: so he'll drop back to 13 under and day will still recover
7:39 pm
the lead. for us, that's good. it's a logjam. to 18. jim: this suddenly brought a whole lot of folks into the battle for sunday. spieth at the 18th. nick: this is what pete dye does. he makes the fink hole into the sun just to make it more difficult. -- finishing hole into the sun just to make it more difficult. jim: he never saw it. nick: you can't look up. you'll burn your eyeballs. jim: that's what you get for having a late tee time and playing well. nick: that's pete dye's diabolicalness. jim: 16. gary: justin rose having a go at this par 5 in two. he's got it back left. looks like he's trying to hit a cut in there.
7:40 pm
and perfectly. they're nice and soft and he is going to have about 45, 50 feet there for his eagle. he's at 12 under. if he could knock that in, that happened tie him for the lead. now back on the tee. just a little bit of wind coming at him. just a little bit. another hang. that's going to wrap itself in that rough right there. no chance to get there in two. look at all these bunkers. it is just amazing. so we're there. somebody try to help me. all right, david feherty, just a little wind against these guys
7:41 pm
here. david: yeah, and it will be interesting to see after the double bogey -- i mean, he's hit straight. he need one good swing here to get himself back on track. gary: as you can see, he's had no problem with this hole so far. just about everybody is getting the ball in the fairway and having a go in this at two. that's perfect. david: it's ok, we're back. gary: we got the grilled. we got 305, 306 yards out there. that will be no problem getting there in two and this hole is cut right on the pirate's plank on the left, way out on the end of the green. kind of daring to you try to get
7:42 pm
back to it and you can see par 5 scoring. first. just over four and that will do it because these par 5's out here where he's hitting the ball are all reachable. to 17. ian: third hardest hole on the golf course today. tony finau on the team. peter: that was an awkward setup and this is headed left. ian: wow, peter, that's way left. that's a 5-iron for tony. peter: there's not much good down there. ian: no, there is desperation. 1. gary: and this to tie for the lead.
7:43 pm
that wasn't me. right at 52 feet. look at this day. wow. everybody's left it short. everybody's left it short -- whoa, it's right in the middle! ok. good two-putt birdie. justin rose is going to get to 13 under par. you see right there on the fourth hole today, double bogeyed it. yesterday, he double bogeyed it. get rid of number four and we have a nice lead for justin rose. but a lot of the other guys are making doubles this golf course will lend itself to once in a while hitting a crooked one and
7:44 pm
you can't advance it. and we have both pro tracers up there. one on the right. it's going to wrap itself in the rough and the other one, bombs away. about 305 yards off the tee. everybody was kind of running away were a -- for a why. jason day came back to us a little bit with that double bogey on 15. justin rose with that birdie moves up so a lot of juxtapositioning here and this can't be good on a par 3. ian: he can't see anywhere near the flag. it's not a great lie either. peter: he's not in the sand. he's in the grass. this could go anywhere.
7:45 pm
it could go back in the lake. ian: did not even reach them, peter that. must have had some grass behind the ball. 16 now. david: 3-wood for matt jones. gary: does he have a chance to get there from that lie? david: 274 yards. gary: that's going to stick on bad. he's got a lot of green, good to 18. jim: jordan spieth. just two behind. oh! the late saturday charge continues. nick: you can tell he just steps up his intensity.
7:46 pm
you know, he has this ability to just turn it up. because the way day was going before the double, i think he might have felt like it was getting away from him, out of reach. nick: he's just -- if you have that ability to have the ninth gear, he's one of the few that can do that. jim: of course, day can make a quick recovery here at the par 5 16th. gary: and this guy definitely has that gear, david feherty. 3-wood. he can reach it easily. gary: you can see our tower there. see the flag waving at you? how'd you like to shoot that flag with a 3-wood? jason: down. david: it's on an awful good line. gary: oh! he went right at it. that ball hit six, seven feet
7:47 pm
from the hole. we all saw what it looked like to give it a rim with a 3-wood. that's some pretty good golf right there. trying to get that double bogey back on 15 with a 3-wood eagle. jim: jordan spieth. a moment ago, setting up a chance at 65. spieth seconds -- seconds later it was day. watch this ball disappear into the second cut. might be a little dicey. we'll be back in a moment.
7:49 pm
ian: just moments ago, tony finau at 17 playing his third from way down there, peter. peter: yeah, he had a much, much better lie and was able to control contact with this one. still got a strong eight feet, maybe 10 for his bogey. ian: anything can happen on any hole. there's a double bogey waiting at any turn. nick: it's amazing, though, he's done everything so well. he just misses one putt, maybe two, changes your hole focus. one pulled shot and then you have this. ian: that's a huge four. i know it's a bogey but it's a totally different feel heading to the last tee. gary: and now a little chaser that looks warm coming in.
7:50 pm
whoa, whoa. as we said, that came out a little hot and boy, it did. that's going to be a hard of working 4 there. this lyrics i can't see the ball at all. david: after two glorious shots like that, that looks like an elephant sat on it. it is buried and it's only an inch into that thicker rough. there. it's right there. gary: yeah, you would think, you know, golf karma, if you took a 3-wood and just about flew it in the hole and you're only what, 12 feet, 13 feet away? might get a little better lie than that. it's a hard game, though. david: just waiting for justin rose to hit. gary: let's go to 17 tee right next to us. ian: he's had two birdies the first two rounds.
7:51 pm
justin: down. ian: 5-iron. is it turning too much? no, no problem. 40 feet. rose just one behind jason day but jason not a very good lie at the back of 16. may not be able to get it up and down for birdie. that is a terrible lie up against that second cut. that grass is about six to eight inches long there. ooh. jim: and jordan spieth. this is for six birdies over his final eight holes. and a round of 65. but of course. oh, wow. what is sunday going to be like
7:52 pm
around here? nick: you mean saturday was just a warm-up? jim: yes. 13 under now for the championship. that puts him to 50 under for the four majors this year total. nick: yeah, it used to be if you could get to 10 under for four majors turn best. jim: 50 under and there is a chance that just like at st. andrews, he could have a final-round pairing with jason day, who's at 16. girlfriend he had the same kind of shot he's going to have to hit in the bunker. he hit two of them out of the bunker. it's the same kind of thing. open it up and swing real hard. david: he could easily hit it to the front of the grine too. gary: he got all ball on that one, david. david: just hideous. a double bogey followed by one of the worst breaks i've seen. you have to take it.
7:53 pm
jim: it wasn't until the last hour when suddenly jordan emerged. had all these fireworks going on all over the course. and then he responded. his sister. nick: he just has a great ability to do everything right. he focuses so well. he pictures it. he assesses the shot so well and he commits so it and then it's down to nerves and he pulls off a great shot. back to 16. gary: it's geten fun, isn't it? birdie chip. he caught that one clanky too. these guys are having a difficult time around this green. face. like it wanted to go backwards into the lake. gary: some muttering going on now. but it's golf. i don't think they're enjoying these views that we are out here looking at this.
7:54 pm
they have their head down trying to figure this thing out. david: jason has been so intense today. he has stareed that ball down. and just seems in a really good place in his head. and this is just a huge putt, i believe. david: yeah, david, he came in just played the one practice round this week. he said this stage of the season, he knows how he's playing. he said it's all down to position and mental strength. peter: and nick, you know towards the end of the year, everybody's pretty worn out. a pretty good idea, pretty good way to do it, isn't it? nick: i agree. when you think about it you've got to save your strength now. if you're playing good, you're playing good. you don't have to grind on it so
7:55 pm
save it for thursday and on. gary: birdied this hole the first two times he's played it and looking for this. this is a big one after that double on 15. oh. that's going to hurt after those two shots he hit, the driver and the 3-wood. wow. he's got to buckle down now. he's got two difficult holes coming up that jordan spieth made look very easy with the two birdies on 17 and 18.
7:56 pm
scott piercy now. signing all the golf balls, give them out to everybody that was around you. scott's a good man. wow. he's played this one one over. well, everybody else had a lot of fun with this hole as it gave up 33 birdies for the day and only three bogeys. of which matt jones is one of them. let's go to 17. ian: just moments ago, this was 36 away for justin rose to get to 14 under. and so close once again. his speed has been better. ian: jordan passing on a signed ball to the standard-bearer and the people who walk with the group. most of the guys will do that.
7:57 pm
