temperatures. similar in the low 90s. more humid and more clouds. generally a mostly sunny day on tap and a hot one. the current temperatures, 76 in the city. 59 in monticello. 69 for yaphank and 68 in cranbury. most of us in the 60s and 70s out there. as we look at the vortex satellite and radar we had a few showers making their way to the north of the city early this morning. they are starting to dissipate. the sprinkles, you may see a few more fall before all is said and done. by this afternoon, skies will be mostly sunny under an air quality alert. we have high levels of o shown in the atmosphere. 9:00 a.m. 79. feeling like 82. by noon 86, mostly sunny. feels like 88. at 3:00 this afternoon, we peak at 92 degrees. it will feel like 94. skies will be mostly sunny.

in the first forecast, the full heat wave of 2013. i will have details shortly. we begin with breaking news out of east harlem. police are on the hunt for a man who escaped custody while still in handcuffs. >> >> ilana gold joins us from east harlem. this morning. we want to show you video of police scouring the area by 102nd and park. they have been going to a number of buildings trying to find the suspect but he is on the run. here is what we know the the escape happened at 3:00 outside the 23rd precinct. officers say they had taken him out of the patrol car, he was in handcuffs and as they walked him up to the building, he broke loose and ran off. it's unclear why he was arrested but police say it was a low level offense. on july 25, arthur collins

escaped from the 25th precinct in east harlem. he got out of the holding cell when i was booked on a charge. then another problem june 23rd when tarek arnold escaped from the 32nd precinct in harlem. video shows him running down the street and officers chasing after him. he was captured after a month on the run. back out live at the 23rd precinct where police are looking for an escaped prisoner, we are looking for more details on who this man is. we will keep you updated. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. new this morning, julian bond, an activist at the forefront of the 1960s civil rights movement died. he died in fort walton beach after battling an unspecified illness. he served as founding president in the 70s and chairman of the board for the naacp for more than a decade.

in the 80s he fought against apartheid in south africa. he was 75. >> three people died after a multivehicle crash on the taconic state parkway in yorktown. before 3:00 a bmw s.u.v. slammed into an embankment north of bald win and went airborne. the vehicle then struck eight other cars. one person was rushed to westchester medical center in critical condition. no word on what caused the crash. a brooklyn family is in mourning after a 5-year-old boy drown swimming in the rockaways. ezekial was unresponsive and unconscious when a life guard pulled him from the waters. lifeguards say there were strong rip currents yesterday but it's unclear if that was factor in the boy's death. police are searching for four people after a stabbing at the union square subway station. investigators say the attack happened around 6:30 last night

on a southbound platform. witnesses say the attack appears to have involved a group of young people. the victim was taken to bellevue and is expected to be okay. crews from the national transportation safety board are trying to determine what caused a deadly plane crash in new jersey. the single engine cessna was flying to teterboro when it just fell out of the sky, burst into flames in west caldwell. cbs 2's matt kozar has more. >> ntsb investigators say initial reports suggest the pilot experienced some type of mechanical failure. he was trying to make it back to the runway when he nose dived into the woods about 300 feet behind this day care center. thick black smoke billowed high into the blue sky from the site of the plane crash. witnesses who heard the explosions ran toward the flames to help but there was nothing they could do. >> the second you saw the explosion you knew what happened. no way anyone walks way from that. >> reporter: shortly after taking off from the essex

county airport at 10:00 a.m. the pilot of a six seater 2009 cessna like this road the control tower that he was unable to maintain power. he sadie christina aguilera an emergency, returning to the field immediately. the tower responded. >> 3 tango victor, anything you need, runway. >> according to initial statements the aircraft may have lost engine power. >> reporter: the pilot crashed a half mile from the airport. >> it looked like it was making a turn then it kind of nose dived into the ground. as soon as it hit the ground it exploded then two more explosions after that. >> reporter: police say the 50- year-old pilot, a new jersey man, was the only one on board. he was a flight instructor on his way to pick up a student. five investigators with the national transportation safety board are working to determine the cause of the crash. >> we have all four corners of the airplane on scene. it didn't lose parts in flight

and we have evidence of a post next three days. they are flying in specialists from kansas and pennsylvania to help in the investigation. reporting from west caldwell, new jersey, matt kozar, cbs 2 news. an update in the legionnaires outbreak in the bronx. the city health department added several more confirmed cases with people with the disease bringing the total to 124. 94 have been treated and released from the hospital. 12 have died from the disease. there have been no new confirmed cases since august 3rd. the health department says all the people who died were adults with preexisting medical conditions. police are desperately trying to identify this woman. ems found her lying on the ground on 11th avenue near 43rd street in hell's kitchen wednesday night. she was taken to roosevelt hospital.

hospital workers told police she does not speak or respond to verbal prompts. she is believed to be in her 70s. a firefighter shot twice during a violent stand off on staten island is back home this morning. >> dozens of firefighters cheered as lieutenant james hayes left richmond university medical center yesterday afternoon. the 31 year veteran of the fdny is expected to make a full recovery. he was shot twice responding to reports of smoke coming from a home where u.s. marshals were trying to serve a warrant. the man who shot hayes died in a shoot out with police. >> great to see the firefighter will be okay. coming up, more than 3,000 flights delayed after a glitch caused major headaches along the east coast. >> they said if they didn't get my son. >> a family too scared to show their faces. the elaborate cell phone scam used to threaten them.

computer failure at a facility in virginia that stretched on for hours. this map shows a multistate hole in the nation's air traffic leading to delayed and canceled flights nationwide. this was the scene at laguardia airport. long lines, delays and plenty of frustration. isaac gonzalez is stranded. >> i am staying in an apartment i don't know, place i don't know. i will be there all night until the next flight in the morning. i'm not happy. i'm very upset. >> reporter: as the aa worked to -- faa worked to fitch the glitch, it was felt in the northeast and mid-atlantic and as far west as los angeles saw delays. the faa said there is no sign that the technical issues had anything to do with terrorism or hacking.

chris van chief cbs 2 news. a homeowner snapped photos of this black bear sticking its head through the cat door. the homeowner said while he was on vacation he made the might stake of leaving the glass door slightly cracked. when he got home he discovered a bear had entered, ate, went to the bathroom on the carpet. this is not the first run in with a bear. in may a bear and two decks climbed on the condo to eat bird feed. that would freak me out. >> easy to say awe when that is a photo. i don't know if i had that reaction with a bear coming through my cat door. let's check in with vanessa murdock. you had the same reaction. >> just that face sneaking through. hey, guys, what are you doing. can i have food, please. >> a hot forecast.

there. let's go outside and show you a beautiful live picture of sunrise this morning. it's a little bit more cloudy to start things off. as we get into the afternoon, skies will be mostly sunny. it will be a sizzling end to your weekend after a mild start at 76 degrees. hour. your headlines, the 90s are back, they are here to stay for quite a few days. we are talking the first heat wave of 2015 is in the bag. it started yesterday and we think it doesn't wrap up for a few more days. hottest day tomorrow. that temperature will be in the mid-90s with higher humidity. it will feel like the upper 90s for many of us and the humidity will continue to climb the next few days. it won't be terribly uncomfortable today but we start to feel it. tomorrow we will feel it more. tuesday will be the sticky yeast of the next few. on the vortex satellite and

radar we watched a few showers dissipating out there. mostly sunny by this afternoon. high pressure is dominating the forecast. not just today but for days bringing in air out of the southwest. it's hot air. it's getting more humid. today the forecast is dry. we are not calling for showers or thunderstorms. there is the slimmest chance of a stray shower or storm well to the north again today but a lesser chance than yesterday. through the forecast hour by hour, this morning things are looking great as we go into the afternoon, you saw the hint that maybe there will be a shower north of the city. overall we stay dry and it's a mostly sunny day. overnight skies are mostly clear. muggy, prepare for another hot day tomorrow, more humid with a better chance for showers and storms tomorrow. then that trend does continue into tuesday. beach forecast today looks like this. mid- to upper-80s. southwest winds 5 to 15.

con artists claim to have kidnapped family members then asked for a ransom. >> it happened to a family that asked we conceal their identities. they said they held the father hostage. then they called the boy's mother and demanded $3,000. the family called 911. >> they said if they didn't get money they would kill my son. >> scrambled phone numbers, we couldn't get a trace on it. it came back to indonesia and india. >> investigators say if you get a call lining this call police right away. they believe the con artist in this case got the teen's phone number from the internet or called it randomly. the days are numbered for summer vacation and the idea of heading back to school can create anxiety for some kids. how parents can help calm them. >> a bike for the 21st century. the bells and whistles on this

we will keep you updated as we get more information. breaking out of east harlem, police are looking for a man that escaped custody from the 23rd precinct. this is the third time it happened in the last two months. ilana gold is live with the details. ilana. >> reporter: andrea, police tell us they were taking the suspect into the 23rd precinct when he got away and ran off in handcuffs. police have been looking for him for hours now. he is a man in his 20s. this video shows officers searching the neighborhood where the escape happened. it's by 102nd and park avenue. moments ago we learned the suspect was trespassing before 3:00 this morning. they had just taken him out of the patrol car when he escaped and was last seen running toward park avenue. these escapes are a real problem recently.

no word what caused the a brooklyn family is in crash.mourning after a 5-year- old boy drown swimming in the rockaways. ezekial was unresponsive and unconscious when a life guard pulled him from the waters. it is the same beach that four people nearly drown four weeks ago. lifeguards say there were strong rip currents yesterday but it's unclear if that was factor in the boy's death. a long island man is facing charges in a deadly car crash from two years ago. police pulled him over friday for driving without a front license plate. when they ran his information, they found an open warrant for his arrest related to a 2013 crash that killed his 4-year- old son and the boy's mother. at the time he appeared to have suffered a medical emergency. this happened in westbury on old country road. he is due back in court tomorrow. police say alcohol may have played a role in a boat crash that left three people stranded

in spring lake, new jersey. photos show emergency crews rescuing two men and a woman friday. someone called 911 after the 24- foot fishing boat hit a jetty near the newark avenue beach. police arrested the operator, thomas mcginley. he was charged with boating under the influence. presidential hopefulls headed to the fair to woe potential voters. donald trump arrived by helicopter. trump and hillary clinton never crossed paths but he continued to attack her record. clinton down played the use of a private e-mail server serving as secretary of state. >> i used a single account for convenience. obviously these years later it doesn't look so convenient. >> hillary clinton was the single worst secretary of state in the history of this country.

talk about school or help prepare, one who cries a lot, throws tantrums, headaches, insomnia. parenting expert and therapist says it can be due to academics, social anxiety or because it's a new school, grade or teacher. >> just the change is an anxiety. talking about the new teacher, mentioning her name so they feel comfortable, touring a new location, playing on a new playground. >> for younger kids it can be about not feeling as smart at other kids and can strike kids doing well in school. gold suggests doing a few end of subject summer work sheets or bridge books to prep them for the upcoming subjects. >> maybe meeting with the teacher or a local high school kid that can help tutor them a bit so they feel self- confidence. >> reporter: for teens social anxiety tops the list and can be the hardest to overcome. >> if it's social anxiety, you want to talk about that.

have them meet up with some friends. >> reporter: of course getting your teen to talk about his or her anxiety isn't easy. if you are anxious about their going back to school, kids pick up on it. enlist a trusting nonparental adult. if the anxiety interferes with success at school, it may be time to look for professional help. >> a good place to start is with your child's teacher or guidance counselor, especially if it has anything to do with being bullied at school. in the next hour, back to school fashion that is trendy and budget trendy. >> that can help with the anxiety when you feel like you look good. let's check in with respect vanessa murdock looking great this morning and tips on what to wear. >> as little as possible but load on the sunscreen. that is the trick for today. the sun will be blazing again. it will be steaming again.
