stages of this investigation, based upon what we know now. police say 68-year-old kevin downing walked into the building with several guns hidden in a bag and shot the security guard before killing himself. we saw his family overwhelmed with grief over this sudden and incredible loss, detectives say it is unclear why kevin downing showed up at this building but said he was fired from the federal bureau of labor statistics several years ago, the bls has an office on the eighth floor. >> we are at the very early stages of this investigation and are working to establish his motive if he had an intended target and what the motive was behind the crime. cbs 2 learned downing received veterans benefits and confirmed troubling facts about him. lawsuits and other documents he believed he was fired from the

federal government because of retaliation, blew the whistle on corruption and public waste. >> god only knows what happened in his life or what has happened that pushed him to that point. >> downing's block now taped off by police, as they begin to search for clues neighbors say they knew him as a polite real estate agent who lived alone since the death of his wife. >> nice, quiet gentleman. back out here live where evidence taken from the gunman's home here could give police some clues on what led to the shooting at this point it is unclear if he knew the security guard. we're live in fort lee new jersey, alana gold. the security officer's employer fjc security service released a statement praising the father of four as a dedicated worker reads in part, he was scheduled to complete his day at 4 p.m., but agreed

to stay on for extra duty. that speaks volumes about the person he was. the native was killed about an hour after his original shift was scheduled to end. and americans are heroes after they helped stop the track, police say a gunman open fire as the train was heading to paris from amsterdam, the three americans tackled and disarmed the gunman, who are members of the military and the third is in college in california. he has been taken into custody one of the servicemen and another passenger were hurt but expected to be okay. police searching for a woman with an apparent case of subway rage. this woman push, scratched and bit a fellow subway rider that tried to sit in the seat that had the suspect's bag on it. train.

the 45-year-old victim was treated at mount sinai hospital. more on the explosion that caused damage to a bronx high school. officials say this happened when one of the workers lit a match to test a gas line that contractors were installing, the explosion blew out windows and walls and jfk high school. three workers were hospitalized, and now 3,000 students have nowhere to go on september 9th which is the first day of school. we will not allow students to go back into a building that's not totally safe. we're working on fixing those three floors and investigating the cause of the issue. every student will be able to relocate and every student will start school on time. to new developments in the legionnaires outbreak, a bacteria was found at a cooling tower at river side high school in yonkers.

it was made after -- the cooling tower has been cleans and disinfected, legionnaires' disease killed 12 people and sickened more than 100 others in the south bronx. a long island high school football player is facing weeks in the hospital after suffering from heat stroke on a field during practice. 16-year-old nicolas was listed i should say in critical condition after he collapsed on monday on river head high school's football field. the junior had been practicing outside for three hours in 80- plus degree weather in high humidity. when he was rushed to the hospital his body temperature was 108 degrees. >> he was on a mechanic ventilator by the time he got to us, disoriented with altered mental status. the prognosis is unclear, doctors says there are encouraging signs of improvement but damage to his kidneys could be permanent. experts say heat stroke can happen faster than people

>> reporter: her baldwin house destroyed by sandy rebuilt with the help of fima funds. but she believes the government shortchanged her. >> do you think your over all pay out was fair? >> no, i do not. i don't think it was fair at all. >> yet she is giving up the fight. >> the work at the time, the effort, the trauma, everything that we've gone through, you just can't go through that twice. >> she is not alone, 142,000 filed claims following the storm, then fraud was uncovered engineers allegedly -- with insurance pay outs only 11,000 have accepted. fima's invitation to policyholders, if we believe we under paid your claim you may be eligible for additional payment. >> the fact is we don't know how many people were under paid just a handful, but for us the most important thing we can do is restore trust in the program.

danny has weaked to a category 2 tomorrow, decreased to 110 miles per hour. expects the storm to weaken further and become a tropical storm as it moves towards the islands tomorrow. heading outside this morning not as humid as we've been experiencing this week, vanessa is here with a look at our forecast. better hair day today, it is going to be a good start to your weekend but the second half we have some wet weather likely going to impact your plans. so let's take you live outside, show you what's happening here, things are looking pretty good to the east, we have more clouds this morning, maybe a few showers east of the city today as well, it is partly cloudy and 70, north winds at 10 miles per hour. as we look at your weather headlines, today is the better half, so i suggest keeping the plans today and maybe just making some adjustments tomorrow. showers are in tomorrow's forecast, it will not be a wash out but nonetheless, not a

perfect end to your weekend. today is comfortable tomorrow you'll notice the humidity climbing back then it is humid again on monday. but it doesn't last long. midweek next week the forecast is lovely. let's take a look at the temperature trend here, what we've got going on yesterday was 87 degrees in the city, that sun just really heated us up tomorrow 86 tomorrow, 86. do you know we're going on our 44th straight day of temperatures at or above 80 and two days ago we set a record for the longest stretch at 80 or above and that trend will continue for the next seven days or so. >> some excitement i hope you're excited. what's happening, there is this disturbance that has some potential of becoming tropical. but over the next day, what's going to happen tomorrow is the front that brought us yesterday's wet weather is actually going to start easing its way back as this system kind of forces it assure. showers and tomorrow's forecast

systems combined. you can still see that front bring wet weather to places like cape cod, for us today, few showers possible on the east end of long island certainly more clouds, but for most of us, it is going to be a day with mostly sunny skies look at all this dry air in the city and points west, big area of high pressure tryingto win out, doesn't happen today, doesn't happen tomorrow for sure and then as we make our way into tuesday is when this high pressure system finally takes hold and we get that dry, comfortable air mass here to stay for quite some time. today, looking very pleasant for points west north and south, but way out on the east end of long island more clouds will be impacting the forecast maybe a shower. today, though, over all i think looks great over night tonight the clouds thicken for all of us we'll see a few showers getting tossed back in our direction as that system does what we call retro grading moves to the west, and then as we go through the day tomorrow showers become more and more likely as we get into the afternoon for your beach

guard 53-year-old idrissa camara, the security's office employer service released a statement praising the father of four as a dedicated worker. it reads in part camara was scheduled to complete his day at 4 p.m. but agreed to stay on for extra duty that speaks volumes about the person he was. the ivory coast native was killed about an hour after his original shift was scheduled to end. three americans are being hailed a hero after they stopped a track, police say a gunman open fire as the train was headed from paris to amsterdam, the three americans tackled and disarmed the gunman. two of the americans are members of the u.s. military, the third is a college student from california. the gunman identified as a 26- year-old national, ors were

hurt but expected to be okay. and investigators say a woman pushed, scratched and bit a fellow subway rider that tried to sit on a seat that had her bag on it. it happened on an f train, police say the attacker took off when they stopped at the bridge street station, the sinai hospital. and developments in the legionnaires outbreak in the bronx, the bacteria that causes the disease was found in a cooling tower in yonkers, after ordered that all towers be cleaned following the outbreak in the bronx. the cooling tower has since been cleaned and dissicfected the city is also in the process of cleaning all towers. legionnaires killed 12 and sickened 100 others in the bronx. new information on the explosion that caused extensive damage to a high school there, officials now are saying it happened when one of the

head aches but she had a migraine so bad she missed 10 straight days. >> i had a lot of catch up home work to do, tests to make up, that just added to the stress. we do feel that school does kind of trigger them more often than typically until she kind of gets back into a routine. >> a new study shows she is not alone. >> stress is really a significant player with children and teen's head aches, we see that all the time and school is the biggest stressor. >> she tracked head ache taces for the last five years at nationwide children's hospital, found that emergency department visits for headaches stayed about the same most of the year but jumped 31% in the fall. experts say prevention starts with bedtime and breakfast routines. >> they don't get their sleep in there, don't eat breakfast their nutrition, those are all things that complain to causing headaches. >> their advice make sure kids

as we look ahead sunny skies for most today that stray shower chance east tomorrow everybody. the whole day won't be a wash out certainly today looking better. humidity will briefly return so today feels good, tomorrow gets a little sticky, monday will be muggy and then tuesday and beyond right now, looking great with low humidity back in play. your humidity trend here we go for today it is comfortable tomorrow we're feeling it, feeling it even more on monday but that's it after that. it gets back to comfortable levels on the vortex satellite and radar picture note how many of us are loving these clear skies this morning relatively clear skies across suffolk county, we have a cold front that doesn't want to leave us. must love the tri-state areas, just hanging around to our east, and what's going to happen tomorrow is this system actually starts getting pushed backward.
