just a little bit. andrea and diane, back to you. >> we have breaking news out of mount vernon this morning. both suspects involved in an undercover police operation gone wrong are now in custody. >> cbs 2ilana gold has the details from mount vernon. >> reporter: investigators now working through the morning, near the intersection of beekman and tecumseh avenues in mount vernon trying to figure out how this undercover police operation went terribly wrong. >> i was hearing in my bed, boom, boom, boom. i thought it was fireworks. >> they were gunshots that went through the windows of this black car and left shell casings across the neighborhood. >> i ran in my house for cover. came back out. and people were scattered everywhere. police cars coming everywhere. police were screaming. running. different directions. >> reporter: investigators say the problem stemmed from an undercover buy of illegal guns. they tell us the suspect contacted an undercover officer with the nypd on friday. he apparently said he had guns for sale and they met up in the bronx. the suspect then got into the

officer's car and told him to drive to mount vernon. when they arrived in the westchester county neighborhood, a second suspect got into the vehicle. >> there was some discussion. and a gun is put to our undercover's head. >> police say the men tried to rob the officer. that's when the officer signaled to his backup team that open fire on the suspect. but two bullets struck and killed an innocent bystander behind one of the suspects. police say they identified the victim as 61-year-old felix kumy. >> yes. i see him all the time. he got shot. >> and what can you tell us about him? >> well, i did see him walking into the store and stuff like that. very nice guy. >> reporter: both suspects are now in custody. >> the second suspect who held that gun to the officer was also shot. he is in stable condition. investigators say that suspect's weapon was actually it. a replica of a handgun. >> that was ilana gold reporting from mount vernon. we have new video this morning of a pilot who was

killed while practicing for the new york air show in orange county. the experimental home built plane crashed after takeoff at 2:00 p.m. yesterday at stewart international airport. the plane is registered to a man from austin, texas. police say the aircraft appeared to have experienced a structural failure. the air show is expected to go on as scheduled. police have a possible suspect in custody in the execution style murder of a sheriff's deputy in houston. and they have not confirmed that possible suspect's role in the shooting yet. investigators say darren goforth was pumping gas into his patrol car last night when a man walked up to him and shot him in the back of the head. prosecutors say they knee no other motive except that the suspect wanted to kill a law enforcement officer. goforth was a 10-year veteran with the sheriff's office. transportation ministers of nine european countries are expected to meet today in paris to discuss beefing up security on trains. and this comes after american passengers foiled a terrorist

attack, on a high speed train traveling to paris a little over a week ago. and insiders say the group will discuss adding airport style metal detectors on some international trains. more armed security personnel, and greater information exchanges so that the destination countries know if a suspect is heading their way. new this morning, police are looking for two young men suspected of pulling off two robberies in one day in queens. last saturday, police say these men took a woman's purse at 5:30 in the morning, and then took a bag from a young couple. just before midnight. the robberies were blocks from each other in ridgewood. police say the suspects robbed the victims at gunpoint but no one was hurt. and police say they have arrested one of the two men shown here on surveillance video entering an office building that was robbed of its computers and other electronics. it happened last monday afternoon in midtown. police say this is part of a sting, a spring i should say of robberies that have been happening in the manhattan businesses since may. 27-year-old tracy mcgeeiveer was only charged in this political incident.

a tsa agent is accused of sexual assault at laguardia airport. 40-year-old maxy oquendo of manhattan faces several charges including unlawful imprisonment and sexual abuse. the queens district attorney says he lured a 21-year-old exchange student from korea into a men's bathroom in terminal b and assaulted her. >> i'm really shocked that for one that he would be able to pull that off. >> too afraid to go to the airport. it makes you not trust these people that are supposed to be here to help you. >> the tsa says they fired oquendo and he will be in court soon. the television news crew killed in virginia, vicky gardner who survived the shooting said she didn't see the gunman walk up because the camera lights were too bright. the murder of allison parker and adam ward happened on live television but a video editor at the station wdbj saw what viewers didn't. >> the camera didn't shut off,

and i could see the video that was transmitting through adam's camera. >> michael episcopo watched the live video feed as it happened and he knew adam was dead when he stopped moving and he had to watch the murder of his friends repeatedly. >> and i had to look at it over and over again, because it was my job to give a copy to police, and give a copy to us, and give a copy to our legal team. and i watched my friend, eight, nine times in a row. >> he was able to freeze this picture of the gunman, vester flanagan, flanagan fired from the station for poor performance two years ago, later killed himself. crime fighting goes high- tech with an app called next door. when an alleged thief struck an east village apartment building, people posted the video online to warn others. cbs 2's jessica schneider reports. >> he is seen lurking outside this building on east third street. a man with a backpack who ultimately got away with a garbage bag full of other

people's deliveries. >> what was stolen? >> a lunch box. >> for your son? >> yes. >> and an innocent kid's lunch box stolen. >> yes. >> carlos gomez is on a crusade to find this alleged thief. he posted photos of the crime scene in the lobby and started spreading the word to his neighbors to be on the look out. >> it is mostly taken by the fact that he seemed to know the building so well. he walked in with a few bags and he knew where to go. so it made me think immediately that he must have been doing this for a while. >> people here have discovered it might not be just their building the thieves are targeting. they shared that video on this social media app called next door. and it a virtual bulletin board connecting people in the same neighborhood. >> what i am telling people on the next door app is to go to the police and report the case. >> on the next door app, he learned of at least four other buildings where someone swiped packages. right now, there are 1,000 private chat rooms set up for different neighborhoods in new york city. each community consisting of

it is a gorgeous morning out there on this last saturday in august. if you can believe it. 9:10. 73 degrees. and vanessa says we're in for a great day. will it continue throughout the whole weekend? she will have the full forecast in a few minutes. right now, a developing story out of thailand. police have made an arrest in the bombing that killed 20 people and wounded many more. the shrine in bangkok earlier this month.

the suspect is said to be a 28- year-old turkish national. police raided his apartment earlier today, and said they found bomb-making materials. such as detonators and a metal pipe with lids, and apparently meant to be used as a bomb. human rights and freedom of the press advocates are speaking out against an egyptian court's decision to sentence three al jazeera for years. the journalists were arrested in december of 2013, and charged with being part of a terrorist group. and spreading false news. they have denied the charges and say they were just doing their jobs. officials at a california state prison are scrambling to offer safe drinking water after at least one inmate was diagnosed with legionnaire's disease. the water was shut off at san quentin state prison after testing confirmed the illness on thursday. the prison has added 100

temporary toilets and more drinking water in the past few days. investigators are trying to figure out the cause of the outbreak. children in new york state will have to be fully immunized before they're allowed to go to school. beginning on tuesday, the health department will require that all children starting school receive final doses of three standard vaccines before being allowed in. up until now, children can wait until age 6 to receive final doses. the health commissioner says the changes will give children the best protection from devastating diseases. in the healthwatch, scientists say there is a blood test for breast cancer. it could predict a relapse of the disease, months before a tumor starts forming again. researchers in london say the tests can look at pieces of dna linked to the cancer's tumors that were surgically removed. previous tests could only detect cancerous cells after they have grown. they say it could take several years before the test becomes available to patients. many of us have reached for a pain reliever or other

medication to find it is expired. alex dennis says don't throw it out just yet. it is probably okay to use. >> it is probably to use an expired drug with a headache or sinus trouble but if your it. many capsules and tablets have the bottle. >> the reality is because the expiration dates are so conservative, probably even 5 to 10 years from the time of the expiration date, a person can still try using their products. >> manufacturers guarantee their drugs will be safe and fully effective up until the expiration date. which is usually one to five years after it is produced. >> but even with medications that are long expired, the amount of effectiveness is usually over 90%. >> there are certain medications however that should not be used beyond the expiration date. chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes,

where 100% potency is crucial. >> nitro glycerine which quickly loses the effectiveness after you open the bottle, insulin, vaccines, suspensions that you have to refrigerator and those eye drops in a bottle. and store in cool dry places away from sunlight and in the original containers. >> the fda says when you are ready to dispose of your medication, make sure to follow their guidelines. one rule, do not flush medicine down the sink or toilet unless the information specifically in structs you to do so. now to tropical storm erika. the storm is weakening over cuba. as dominica tries to rebuild from it. the prime minister of dominica says 20 people are now dead. the storm hit the caribbean island causing massive flooding and mud slides that wiped out roads and homes. the prime minister says the damage done will set the island back 20 years. exactly 10 years ago today, hurricane katrina slammed the gulf coast, flooding 80% of new orleans and killing more than 1800 people. and even after 10 years, some

families are still struggling. orleans with more. >> reporter: good morning, diane and to everybody. all week long, the mayor has been talking about resilience. leading up to this day, and everywhere. tourism is booming. the new levee system is remarkable and the city's culture is thriving but some rebuild. >> if time heals all wounds. >> i just got on my knees and just prayed to god, please save us, you know. >> lydia needs more of it. she was trapped on a hospital roof for five dayses during hurricane katrina. then she couldn't find her family for two months. >> i don't know if i will ever see my mama. >> eventually reunited, they took refuge in nearby cities including atlanta, but long to go home to the lower ninth ward. it took seven years. >> it feels so good. volunteers helped build a new

house for lydia's mom bernice, but the 79-year-old says she never felt so lonely. >> you could sit on your porch and see people passing by. and talking to you. and everything. but you don't see it no more. >> thousands of people have not returned to neighborhoods like the lower ninth ward. many houses have been passed down for generations and paid off. without mortgages, owners were not required to have flood insurance. >> i lost my way of life. >> ronald lewis not only found his way of back. >> clear out or else. >> he found a way to remember those who did not. lewis opened a small museum in his backyard. treasures found in post storm wreckage fill a metal wearhouse. >> they want to be part of something that is to say this contribution. >> pellagon wishes she could make a different kind of contribution. >> if i was a millionaire i would be building homes here.

at the city skyline, blue skies, clouds on the horizon. it is mostly sunny, right now. and 73 degrees and calm winds. and winds are picking up and more southwesterly as your day progresses. and so yes, it is another winner for the last august weekend. and what will happen is the humidity will build over the next couple of day, and today, still very comfortable, and we are talking about that slight chance for showers, maybe a thunderstorm tomorrow. and then a possible heat wave, as we start september. the temperatures are going to be very close to that heat wave possibility. let's take a look at the rising humidity levels. for today, it is still comfortable, and tomorrow, just getting nudged up, a smidge. and as we get into monday, you will be feeling it by monday and then that trend continues through the midweek. even end of the week forecast. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, mainly clear skies but we have some clouds on the horizon. and this afternoon, we expect partly sunny skies. and high pressure is in control tomorrow. with that opportunity for showers. we have a warm front that will be lifting on through. and with that, we might see a few stray showers.

mainly north and west of the city. but it is not something to change your plans for at this point in time. what we are looking at right now, are the reams of tropical storm erika. what the national hurricane center believes is it is dissipating but still technically a tropical storm and winds sustainedded at 40 miles an hour west/northwest at 20 miles an hour and re- emerging into the gulf and restrengthen and reorganize a little bit at that point in time. but latest reports are saying hey, this tropical storm is basically getting erased. so that would be some really good news, after dumping a whole lot of rain and causing some major issues in dominica. for us, it is going to be very pleasant weekend at home. nice one today. mostly sunny skies early. on. 79 to 83 degrees. and your water temperature is 72 to 78. and tomorrow, a little bit warmer. as it will be for everybody. and at the coast, mid-80s. and want to mention today, there is a moderate risk of rip currents at the coast. for the mountain forecast today, sun and clouds and lovely. upper 70s, low 80s.

the new bride wore her dress down the aisle but it vanished right after the ceremony. >> the new couple says that the theft happened at one of manhattan's most famous hotels. cbs 2 sonya rincon has the story of the stolen memory. >> reporter: when she found this wedding dress, she knew it was the one. >> i went to every bridal store on long island, manhattan, everywhere and i tried on hundreds of dresses. and i found, i saw this one and i put it on and i just loved it. >> she had it customized and personalized and she had plans for it, for her future children. >> i wanted to take pictures with the baby on the dress and eventually make a christening

gown or a communion gown but i will never have that again. >> it disappeared on june 6 or 7 when she and her new husband spent one of the first nights after the wedding at the waldorf astoria, in a garment bag in their car in valet parking at the hotel. when they got home, she realized it was gone. for help. >> they were kind of giving me the run-around and say they were going to do an investigation. >> they sent her surveillance pictures of herself, not exactly helpful. >> you left with the dress in your car. and no, we definitely didn't leave with the dress in our car. >> waldorf management told her the vallee service brings the cars here to a garage three blocks away and mother company handles parking the cars and it doesn't lock them. >> all this news, since there was nothing to indicate another company was involved when she parked. and the sign, the uniforms, receipt and ticket stub, all waldorf and got a letter saying the hotel's insurance company completed the investigation and concluded it is not responsible. >> i called them back and asked

but lots of sunshine, and a little chance for rain. but not today. today, it is going to be quite lovely. let's go ahead. start things off with the temperatures. it is 73 in the city. and 61 for the area. and 71 for mount vernon. 75 in islip. it is 9:30. we have a long ways to go. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, we see a few clouds on the horizon. some thin clouds directly overhead by afternoon, we are calling for partly sunny skies, and the temperatures that feel exactly as what that thermometer reads. very low humidity today. comfortable out there. 76 at 11:00 a.m. and by 2:00, 83 and partly sunny. and our high today, forecasted at 87 degrees. it will feel like 87. and by 5:00 tonight, 84. and partly sunny. and then by 11:00, it is 75 and like 77. and great way to start the weekend coming up. warmer muggy weather and a hans for a heat wave as we start september. coming up in the full forecast. >> vanessa, thank you.

new this morning, some dramatic images out of jersey city. it is a major demolition that will affect thousands. cbs 2ilana gold is live there to explain. ilana? >> reporter: diane, the demolition happened moments ago at the montgomery gardens housing project. you can see the huge cloud of dust in the distance and we want to show you this incredible video. take a look. >> we shot that video from the rooftop of a building next door. you can see the housing progs, three of the buildings went down minutes ago. this implosion just rocked the area. the noise was so loud, and the ground literally shook. and this is near montgomery street. again, at montgomery gardens, by the water. these three buildings had been vacant since 2013. and that is when the city relocated hundreds of tenants. and now, a developer is going to build an affordable housing complex with 116 new homes.

and this implosion has put quite a bit of dust and debris into the air. and so right now, the city is monitoring the air quality, for the next few hours, and telling people to stay inside and keep their windows closed, and the streets around here will also be shut down, until noon. that project here is supposed to be finished in the spring of 2017. we're live in jersey city, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thanks. and we have breaking news from mount vernon. both suspects involved in an undercover operation gone wrong are now in police custody. and nypd officers shot and killed a 61-year-old innocent bystander in mount vernon yesterday, during an undercover illegal gun buy. investigators say police also shot one of the suspects, jeffrey airsteed who pulled a gun on an officer. he is now in stable condition. and the suspect's gun turns out it was actually a fake, a second suspect, a 37-year-old man, got away last night, but police say they have now apprehended him. well, developing story, out of texas, this morning, police

cell phone in east new york. detectives say the men in the black shirts, they got off the train and ran away. columbia university wants a lawsuit thrown out, claiming it did not protect a student from being called a serial rapist. paul nunguesser is suing the school for discrimination. he says a one-time friend called him a rapist and carried a mattress around campus to protest sexual abuse. he says the university shamefully bowed to social pressure and turned its back on him but columbia university doesn't see it that way and asked a federal judge yesterday to dismiss the lawsuit. we have exclusive video of the moments after the front of a restaurant collapsed in westchester county. and cbs 2 was first on the scene, and as an employee climbed through the debris outside of tequila sunrise, a popular mexican restaurant in largemont. the restaurant's paapit came crashing down yesterday afternoon. luckily no one was hurt. thanks to a passerby who

noticed the crack in the building. >> i told the bar tender. he came out and saw it and the people sitting outside went in. >> they moved them in? >> yes. >> you probably saved their life. >> i guess, yes. >> the cause of the crash remains under investigation. but firefighters say they are looking into whether terra cotta overhang was too heavy. an online campaign to he is seed from the new york city area. there is is a change.org petition and splitting off from the city, and long island and westchester and rockland county and create their own state called new amsterdam. they are sick of new york city taking their tax money. it is a sport that is played in the heart of central park for nearly a century. yet it is something a lot of new yorkers don't even know exist. cbs 2 emily smith shows us what lawn bowling is all about. >> tour guides and petty scab drivers have been known for telling folks that the new york lawn bowling club is an exclusive click for millionaires.

anyone. in central park. you find a bowling green. which by definition is a finely laid stretch of lawn for bowling. it has been around for 90 years, in new york city but it is is referred to by the 100 members as the best kept secret in new york. >> i think central park has an oasis here that not many people know about. >> ryan hoskue, the vice president of the central park new york lawn bowling club. for a tire, he says, the weekend tournament members wear white and during the week, no dress code and for equipment you use a roughly 3 1/2 pound ball supplied by the club, if you happen to have your own set of four. and before you bowl, you roll the white ball, known as a jack, to mark the spot. to roll the ball properly, you need a combination of finesse and speed. and i gave it a try. clearly falling short of the jack. in the end, it is is about who is closest to the jack. a game with more similarities

here we go. as we look, let's see, 2-2. two from charlie hoffman. the first shows fog on the delaware river this morning but alas, the situation there has improved. most recent photo. we like to see that, that your saturday morning is getting brighter and brighter as the sun does its work and mark and janine demartin shows us two beauties. this one, beautiful blue skies with some cirrus clouds, and then the second photo, they sent us, this one, and a little bit more puffy out there, the clouds are, so today, yes, we have some clouds but it is definitely a day that i think you enjoy. and low humidity lingers with lots of sunshine in general and then temperatures a little bit warmer than yesterday by about five degrees. live outside right now, let's show you what it looks like in the city. beautiful shot of the empire state building. mostly sunny and 73. calm winds this morning. and looking ahead, it is another weekend winner. as i mentioned, looking good today. and bet bet for the storms is north and -- best bet for the storms is north and west of the city. humidity creeping back up today. still comfortable.

and a steamy start to september. we are talking about the potential here for a heat wave. we will see how that goes. and we will see the temperature trend here, yesterday was 82. and pretty close to where we should be. and the normal high is 81. today at 87. and tomorrow, 89. and monday, 92 and stay in the 90s for a couple more days. and a dry stretch, we could use some rain. since june 1, about 11 inches of rain. two inches below the norm and we are looking at an abnormally dry situation for most of us and suffolk county, it is under a moderate drought right now, unfortunately no steady light rain in the forecast. best bet looks to be thursday and friday. and even with that, it is not substantial or long term. so here we go. looking at these clear skies instead. no rain out there right now. high pressure has taken hold. and for today, the forecast remains dry. we are looking at partly sunny skies. by afternoon. but then tomorrow, warm front gets closer to us.

as that happens tomorrow, we will see thickening clouds and a chance for some showers and storms, especially north and west of the city but it is a light chance, it is not going to wash out your entire day. and as we look at the forecast, hour by hour, here we go, for today, lots of sunshine early. more clouds by this afternoon. and overnight we are calling for partly cloudy skies, and then tomorrow, we will notice the clouds thicken, as we go through the day, and increasing clouds, with that chance for showers, possibly a thunderstorm, and mainly north and west of the city. it looks like the shoreline should stay dry for those beach plans tomorrow. if you're going today or tomorrow, moderate risk of rip currents today. nice one. low humidity. upper 70s and low 80s. and tomorrow, mid-80s, and water temperatures, 72 to 78 degrees. now a look at the extended forecast. today, beautiful, 87. and low humidity. and becoming partly sunny. and tonight, it is 70. and partly cloudy and comfortable. and then tomorrow, a high of 89. you will notice it is a little bit more humid tomorrow, but i say it is still comfortable, and a chance of showers and storms, mainly north and west 6 -- of the city.
