a day with increasing clouds, slightly warmer temperatures and slightly more humid than yesterday as well. coming up, a chance for a heat wave as we start september. andrea and diane, back to you. >> thank you. our top story this morning, broadway is mourning the death of the first african-american actor to play the lead role in les mis. >> this is one of the last photos of kyle jean-baptiste posted online before his last performance playing the character jean valjean. he was preparing for a new role but a fatal fall cut it short. ilan gay gold has more. >> reporter: his death is a huge loss on broadway. he was a rising star that made history at the imperial theater. on without him.

this you tube video posted on thursday shows the last time kyle jean-baptiste under studied the lead role of jean valjean in les miserables. when he auditioned for the show, a star was born and he became the first african- american and the youngest actor to ever play the role on broadway. his success ended abruptly late friday night. he died at the age of 21 following a performance when he fall from his family's fire escape. >> i knew he was destined for greatness. when this happened, it's really tragic. >> reporter: angela august went to high school with kyle jean- baptiste where he studied performing arts. >> he is great, funny, empathetic guy. he is really great. >> reporter: we went to the residence where the accident happened. the actor's relatives were too

devastated to talk about the loss and referred us to the show's spokesperson. a rep put out the statement, the les miserables family is shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of kyle, a remarkable young talent and tremendous person who made magic in his debut. >> reporter: the final performance was supposed to be september 6th and he planned to purple. in one of his final tweets he said i think everyone -- i thank everyone who supported me and still does. i will never forget this experience. on wards and upwards. nothing but love. the actor's death is a big topic on social media. on twitter people are pushing for broadway to dim the lights in his honor. live in midtown, ilana gold, >> thanks. there are tributes pouring

in all over the internet for kyle jean-baptiste, some from famous stage. one tweeting devastating news about kyle jean-baptiste. my thoughts are with his family. another one: and film star angel will algort said: in other news, police in new jersey are investigating a deadly shooting. one man was shot and killed at this home on passaic street in hasbrouck heights last night. there has been an arrest but the bergen county prosecutor is not releasing the name of the suspect or the victim. two people are injured after a car slammed into a bronx store. now the driver is facing criminal charges. reporter: in this store surveillance video, you can see it happen. look to the bottom right as the

car barrels in. produce goes flying and shoppers run for their lives. two people couldn't-- >> among other things, the driver has been charged with driving while intoxicated as well as assault. we are learning more about the innocent bystander accidentally shot and killed in an undercover nypd operation in westchester. cbs 2's matt kozar has reaction from the police commissioner. reporter: a day after 61- year-old felix kumi was accidentally shot and killed by an undercover nypd cop grieving friends comforted his family at the mount vernon home. >> he was the best. like my second father. you couldn't ask for a better man. >> he is so wonderful. not far. not far that he -- just not far. >> reporter: kumi was shot in the chest and arm when a gun buy operation went wrong. investigators say two suspects robbed the cop of $2,200 inside

his unmarked car on beekman avenue. >> there was some discussion and gun is put to our undercover's head. >> the undercover handed over the cash, jumped out of the car, confronted the armed gunman and shot him also hitting kumi standing on the sidewalk. the suspect's gun was determined to be a fake. in a statement, police commissioner bratton said i wish to express my profound sorrow and sympathy to the family of felix kumi. mr. kumi was blameless and i tender the department's support and service in their grief. mr. kumi was a school bus driver. the company said he was an exceptional employee and well liked by his peers. our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. both of the suspects are in custody. one identified as jeff any

of the bronx. the other suspect is a 37-year- old man. reporting in mount vernon, matt kozar. a fan is dead after falling from the upper deck of turner field during the 7th inning of the yankees braves game last night. he fell 50 feet into the lower level seats after alex rodriguez was introduced. police say the man was in his early 60s. no one else was hurt. the third fatal fall at turner field in eight seasons. a 30-year-old man is being charged with capital murder in the death of a sheriff's deputy near houston. police say shannon miles shot deputy goforth. the 47-year-old was in his uniform when someone approached from behind and fired multiple shots.

responsible for the senseless and cowardly act. we will continue to evaluate the mountain of evidence collected by investigators and actively investigating witnesses. >> goforth was a 10-year veteran on the force. he leaves behind a wife and two children. hawaii is bracing for a hurricane. the high winds, heavy rains are expected to hit the buying island tomorrow morning. forecasters predict the winds could reach tropical storm force of 39 miles per hour. now what is left of tropical storm erika. the storm weakened after a path of destruction and some deaths in the caribbean. it has been downgraded to a low pressure system as it passes cuba. earlier on dominica, 15 inches of rain triggered flooding and mudslides. 50 people are missing. flash flood watches have been issued for central and southern florida.

the storm could bring heavy rains to that area. 10 years ago, hurricane katrina slammed the gulf coast devastating that area. former president bill clinton attended a prayer service. he thanked those that helped rebuild but said a lot more needs to be done. katrina caused billions in damage. it's a sight we haven't seen for years. we are peeling back the layers to give you a peek at the new st. patrick's cathedral. >> a beautiful start yet again.

about two weeks away from impacting anybody in the continental u.s. moving northwest at 12 miles per hour. it will continue on that track passing over the cape verde islands as a hurricane but is anticipated to weaken as it makes its way into the atlantic. we will keep a watch on fred. southwest winds 5 to 15. ocean temperatures mid- to upper-70s for most of us. lightning risk on the coast is none today. that is the least likely place we will see wet weather. u.v. index is a 7 today. heading to the mountains, sun and clouds with a slight chance of a shower, possibly a storm. 82 to 86 degrees with winds out of the west southwest 5 to 10. today a high of 89. pushing 90. a picture of sunshine and clouds and more humid than it's

sending prayers to his family. live in midtown this morning, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thanks. police in new jersey are investigating a deadly shooting. one man was shot and killed at his home on passaic street. there was an arrest but the bergen county prosecutor is not releasing the name of the suspect or victim. police are releasing the sketch of a man that attacked a man in brooklyn. cops are calling it a hate crime. the victim told police the suspect came up from behind and started punching him in the face shouting antisemitic remarks. this happened on 44th and 9th avenue on tuesday. the victim suffered swelling to his face and head. we are learning about the innocent bystander shot and killed by nypd officers during an undercover gun operation gone wrong. friends of felix kumi paid respects in mount vernon. kumi was shot in the chest and arm friday. he was married with three

using a latex that removes decades of dirt. every pew removed, sanded and restained. >> the purpose is to let the shine forth. that. through. >> reporter: cardinal dolan lead a brief tour of the cathedral as these were put back on display. like so many other things, the fragile century old silk articles were taken down, cleaned and restored. >> we have to take the organ apart. we took every single pipe out and the pipes measure from 37 feet tall to three quarters of an inch. >> there is construction work happening at st. patrick's cathedral. overall the restoration project is ahead of schedule and on budget. >> a landmark. the money is well spent to keep it going and in great condition

>> reporter: most people are thrilled with the renovation. there are catholics that are critical, wondering if the money set aside for this project could have kept the neighborhood churches from clothing. >> we need the church open. >> i think that criticism might have a little validity if this was about luxury or embellishing a cathedral. this is about basic repair f. we didn't do did it, the safety and of the cathedral is at risk. it was originally scheduled for completion in december of this year. the timetable was moved up for the pope's visit and evening will be ready when the pontiff arrives next month. >> almost everything anyway. the one thing not finished is a geothermal heating system. you may notice there is no construction material on 5th avenue but plenty on 50th and 51st streets. in addition to visiting st. patrick's he will address the

jets because of a cat. two fighter jets scrambled to divert a plane to denver international airport because of a cat. one passenger tweeted this picture of the confusion yesterday on the condor plane traveling from las vegas to frankfort, germany. sources tell cbs 2 news that a female model from europe demanded that her cat be brought to her rather than be with the other animals on the plane. the passenger was escorted off the plane. >> i guess the other passengers weren't happy with her. >> probably not. police say they found a hiker who disappeared in california. the 62-year-old was missing in the sierra national forest for nine days. rescue crews found her yesterday. they picked her up by a helicopter and took her to the hospital.

>> we have good news at the end of nine days because that is amazing survival for that length of time. >> the 62-year-old suffered broken bones to both legs. she told rescuers she crawled for two days to a creek in order to find water. >> that is incredible survival story. let's head to vanessa murdock tracking a bit of a heat wave. >> i am. today it will be close to 90. then monday through thursday we will be at or slightly above 90. so, the second heat wave of 2015 possible here, folks. first thing to do is check in with the weather watchers to take a look at the current conditions out there. we are noting it's more muggy. we have a few more clouds out are more mild. for some yesterday morning we started off in the upper 40s. the that is not happening today. it's like the mid- to upper- 50s. brian bartow says it's 7

for today i think we are starting to feel it. it's not terrible yet. monday into tuesday we are feeling it. highs in the 90s. on the vortex satellite and radar and a few showers. showers and storms possible, city. if you have beach plans today, you stay dry. as we look at the bigger picture, high pressure is in then this. this is the warm front that will instigate the showers, possibly stray thunderstorms later on today. not a wash out. then back to a dry stretch as we move forward. today we are heating things up. pushing 90 this afternoon. tomorrow we are making the 90- degree mark. it will be muggy. hazy, hot and humid to start the workweek. no wet weather in the forecast after today until thursday and friday. it becomes a september sizzler

there is a lot you can do sauce the classroom to make sure those kids are getting a good education. here with us, barbara peacock, the managing director of school zone resource. >> you brought great items to show us. what is one thing parents should remember as the school year starts. >> it's to make sure their children have materials that help them, they like to do. you want something that children really enjoy doing so they feel comfortable doing the exercises that they will be doing in the classroom. it just reinforces everything that they have been learning right along, if they have been in school and going back to school. they can work with them together at home. >> everything that you brought is stuff that parents can work -- like you mentioned, work with the kids at home. tell me the first item you have here.
