this you tube video posted on thursday shows the last time kyle jean-baptiste under studied the lead role of jean valjean in les miserables. when he auditioned for the show, a star was born and he became the first african- american and the youngest actor to ever play the role on broadway. his success ended abruptly late friday night. he died at the age of 21 following a performance when he fall from his family's fire escape. >> i knew he was destined for greatness. when this happened, it's really tragic. >> reporter: angela august went to high school with kyle jean- baptiste where he studied performing arts. >> he is great, funny, empathetic guy. he is really great. >> reporter: we went to the residence where the accident happened. the actor's relatives were too

devastated to talk about the loss and referred us to the show's spokesperson. a rep put out the statement, the les miserables family is shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of kyle, a remarkable young talent and tremendous person who made magic in his debut. >> reporter: the final performance was supposed to be september 6th and he planned to purple. in one of his final tweets he said i think everyone -- i thank everyone who supported me and still does. i will never forget this experience. on wards and upwards. nothing but love. the actor's death is a big topic on social media. on twitter people are pushing for broadway to dim the lights in his honor. live in midtown, ilana gold, >> thanks. there are tributes pouring

in all over the internet for kyle jean-baptiste, some from famous stage. one tweeting devastating news about kyle jean-baptiste. my thoughts are with his family. another one: and film star angel will algort said: in other news, police in new jersey are investigating a deadly shooting. one man was shot and killed at this home on passaic street in hasbrouck heights last night. there has been an arrest but the bergen county prosecutor is not releasing the name of the suspect or the victim. two people are injured after a car slammed into a bronx store. now the driver is facing criminal charges. reporter: in this store surveillance video, you can see it happen. look to the bottom right as the

car barrels in. produce goes flying and shoppers run for their lives. two people couldn't-- >> among other things, the driver has been charged with driving while intoxicated as well as assault. we are learning more about the innocent bystander accidentally shot and killed in an undercover nypd operation in westchester. cbs 2's matt kozar has reaction from the police commissioner. reporter: a day after 61- year-old felix kumi was accidentally shot and killed by an undercover nypd cop grieving friends comforted his family at the mount vernon home. >> he was the best. like my second father. you couldn't ask for a better man. >> he is so wonderful. not far. not far that he -- just not far. >> reporter: kumi was shot in the chest and arm when a gun buy operation went wrong. investigators say two suspects robbed the cop of $2,200 inside

his unmarked car on beekman avenue. >> there was some discussion and gun is put to our undercover's head. >> the undercover handed over the cash, jumped out of the car, confronted the armed gunman and shot him also hitting kumi standing on the sidewalk. the suspect's gun was determined to be a fake. in a statement, police commissioner bratton said i wish to express my profound sorrow and sympathy to the family of felix kumi. mr. kumi was blameless and i tender the department's support and service in their grief. mr. kumi was a school bus driver. the company said he was an exceptional employee and well liked by his peers. our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. both of the suspects are in custody. one identified as jeff any

of the bronx. the other suspect is a 37-year- old man. reporting in mount vernon, matt kozar. a fan is dead after falling from the upper deck of turner field during the 7th inning of the yankees braves game last night. he fell 50 feet into the lower level seats after alex rodriguez was introduced. police say the man was in his early 60s. no one else was hurt. the third fatal fall at turner field in eight seasons. a 30-year-old man is being charged with capital murder in the death of a sheriff's deputy near houston. police say shannon miles shot deputy goforth. the 47-year-old was in his uniform when someone approached from behind and fired multiple shots.

>> reporter: most people are thrilled with the renovation. there are catholics that are critical, wondering if the money set aside for this project could have kept the neighborhood churches from clothing. >> we need the church open. >> i think that criticism might have a little validity if this was about luxury or embellishing a cathedral. this is about basic repair f. we didn't do did it, the safety and of the cathedral is at risk. it was originally scheduled for completion in december of this year. the timetable was moved up for the pope's visit and evening will be ready when the pontiff arrives next month. >> almost everything anyway. the one thing not finished is a geothermal heating system. you may notice there is no construction material on 5th avenue but plenty on 50th and 51st streets. in addition to visiting st. patrick's he will address the
