ilana gold is live outside the imperial theater with more in reporter: his death is a huge midtown.loss on broadway. history at the imperial theater. today's matinee will have to go on without him. this you tube video posted on thursday shows the last time kyle jean-baptiste under studied the lead role of jean valjean in les miserables. when he auditioned for the show, a star was born and he became the first african- american and the youngest actor to ever play the role on broadway. his success ended abruptly late friday night. he died at the age of 21 following a performance when he fall from his family's fire escape. >> i knew he was destined for greatness. when this happened, it's really tragic.

>> reporter: angela august went to high school with kyle jean- baptiste where he studied performing arts. >> he is great, funny, empathetic guy. he is really great. >> reporter: we went to the residence where the accident happened. the actor's relatives were too devastated to talk about the loss and referred us to the show's spokesperson. a rep put out the statement, >> he did have a good smile. that's how i remember him, by >> reporter: the final performance was supposed to be september 6th and he planned to appear next in the color purple. in one of his final tweets he said i thank everyone who supported me and still does. i will never forget this experience. on wards and upwards. nothing but love. the actor's death is a big topic on social media.

on twitter people are pushing for broadway to dim the lights in his honor. live in midtown, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. from broadway to the internet, tributes are pouring in for kyle jean-baptiste. kristin chenoweth tweeted: josh groban wrote: and actress deborah messing tweeted, quote: police in new jersey are investigating a deadly shooting. a man was shot and killed on his home on passaic street in hasbrouck heights. the bergen county prosecutor is not releasing the name of the suspect or the victim.

a sketch of a man that beat up a man. the victim told police the suspect came up from behind and started punching him in the face shouting antisemitic remarks. it happened tuesday, june 23rd. the victim suffered swelling to his face and lead. two people are injured after a car slammed into a bronx store. now the driver it is facing criminal charges. in the store surveillance picture, you can see it happen at the bottom right. produce went flying and shoppers ran for their lives. two people could not get out of the way. a woman in her 30s is critically injured. >> they were pinned down. you could see the hub cab of the car. she was pinned under that top. >> police say the 68-year-old driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and assault. a fan is dead after falling

from the upper deck of turner field in atlanta during the 7th game. level. medical crews rushed over and treated the man for about 10 minutes before carrying him out on a stretcher. he was in his early 60s. no one else was hurt. this is the third fatal fall in three years in texas. a man is being charged with capital murder in the deadly ambush of a harris county deputy while he was filling up station. the 47-year-old was in his uniform when miles, prosecutors say, approached him from behind and fired multiple shots. goforth was a 10-year veteran of the force and leaves behind a wife and two children. a close call at the beach. a surfer happy to be on dry land after a very close encounter with a shark.

good sunday morning. 72 degrees. we have a warm up coming our way. we will chat with vanessa murdock in a few minutes. new this morning, afghan officials say their forces have taken back a key district from the taliban. regaining the helman province is important because it's the source of most of the heroin produced in afghanistan. six soldiers were killed in the fight. nato conducted a dozen air strikes to help those on the ground. an update on the three al jazeera reporters. they are seeking a pardon from the countries president. the president regrets the long running trial and said the damage has been done to egypt's international reputation. it would have been better to deport the journalists. one was deported in february. he spoke about the sentence. >> i am devastated, sickened by

the verdict that was handed down in egypt last night. >> the three men were arrested in 2013 and being part of a terrorist group and spreading false news. the big island of hawaii is bracing for hurricane i go knows see i don't -- ignocio forecasters predict the winds could reach tropical storm force of 39 miles per hour. now to what is left of terrorism erika. the storm weakened yesterday after leaving a path of death and destruction in the caribbean. it has been downgraded to a low pressure system as it passes over cuba. earlier on dominica, 15 inches of rain triggered flooding and mudslide. 20 people killed, 50 are still missing. flash flood watches have been issued for central and southern florida as the storm could bring heavy rains to that area in the next few days.

forecast has us in the low 90s. four days street and we only need three to make it a heat wave. let's take you live outside and show huh the sunny picture. we have blue skies but quite a haze over the city this morning. it's 72 degrees. we have southwest winds at 5 miles per hour. the headlines, a little more humid today. you will notice it when you step outside. slight chance for a passing storm mainly north and west of the city today. a hot week ahead. highs in the low 90s for at least, we think, four days. today we get close. yesterday 87. 6 degrees above the norm p. today 89, feeling more like 92, 93 degrees. then tomorrow with highs in the low 90s feels like the mid-90s. something to keep in mind as you make your plans, the last couple of days before a lot of kids go back to school. as we look at the 80-degree day

stretch, it's up to 51. i think we will likely be at 58, maybe 60 before it's said and done. it will be a warm 7 days and then after that likely stay above 80 for another couple of days. certainly a warm stretch of 80 or above. as far as sky conditions go, lots of sunshine early. the clouds will thicken later on. this is a warm front. it may trigger showers, possibly a stray thunderstorm as we go into the afternoon hours. if you are heading north, if you live up north of the city today, note you will have more clouds than your neighbors to the south. as we look at high pressure dominating early on. that will change into the afternoon hours and really next week high pressure is dominant in the forecast. a dry stretch monday through wednesday. best bet of wet weather thursday and friday. hour by hour, what can you expect from the forecast? looking good. clouds thicken, especially to the north and west of the city

as the day progresses. a slight chance of a shower, maybe a stray storm especially north and west of the city. tomorrow morning, a mix of sunshine and clouds. steamy to start the workweek. beach forecast today, mid-80s. southwest winds 5 to 15 offering a bit of relief from the heat. 72 to 78 is the water temperature. light temperature risk at the shore is none keeping in mind wet weather much less likely by the coast. u.v. index is a 7. if you are heading to the mountains, sticky with highs in the 80s and a chance of wet weather. 89 feels like 92 today. more clouds. 73 degrees and partly cloudy skies overnight and sticky. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday we stay in the low 90s. plenty of sunshine for most of the workweek. thursday to friday brings the best bet for showers, possibly a thunderstorm and late friday into saturday finally dry, cooler more seasonal air settles back in.

pitch mark or so s. two runs in six innings for degrom. the mets were in need of middle relief. this is why. the mets drop their second straight to the sox. washington won. mets lead is down to 5 1/2 games. yankees in atlanta. five strikeouts in six innings. brian mccann hit a home run friday and he nearly hit one last night. yankees win 3-1 but remain a game and a half back of first place jay's. jets beat the giants by ten in the third preseason game and american pharoah loses at the traverse in saratoga. for cbs 2 sports, i'm steve overmyer.

hempstead high school has one of the lowest graduation rates in the country. it is about to enter receivership. >> what is at the heart of the district's perpetual struggles. carolyn gusoff investigates. >> when i say chaotic, it was chaotic. >> reporter: this former principal paints a pitiful picture. now retired he is speaking out. >> credits, courses, attendance was all helter skelter. >> reporter: dysfunctional administrators fail in the basics like keeping track of transcripts and enrollment. >> the book is missing with all of our transcripts.

>> if you asked them what is the exact attendance in hempstead they couldn't tell you. >> reporter: chaos reflected in abysmal 30% graduation rate. >> nobody was watching the store. >> better people working here. >> it's tough. >> reporter: the district's poor performance not for lack of money. per pupil spending is well above the state average. >> we never know where the money is going. why are their no textbooks, no work books, no curriculum guides. >> reporter: many fearful to reveal their identity. >> like a ship without a captain. >> reporter: in the lower schools, disorganization, lack of discipline and protocols. >> furniture being thrown, teachers being punched and spit on. >> reporter: they believe at the heart of the district's problems. >> a lot 67 research teachers aren't -- a lot of teachers aren't qualified. the they know someone at the board of education. >> i have heard them often from

people from the district, from employees of the district. >> reporter: board of regular against member roger tell list says a culture of nepotism is an open secret. >> when you have a high unemployment rate, the key to being elected to the board in those areas is getting friends, relatives jobs. as a result, you have people being appointed to jobs who are not qualified to do those jobs. let's put it that way. unfortunately that had a real detrimental effect for kids. >> a rehe sent controller audit found staffers. a coach lacked a coaching license. a school board assistant paid $95,000 a year with no known duties. strong said administrators were hired out of nowhere. >> they would tell us to be candidates then somebody else would be appointed for the job.

>> there were teachers in the school who make grammatical mistakes on the job. official documents urge cheek your work. library works labeled none if i can tish shon. the audit found the board appointed administrators with no documented plan, reason or clear benefit to the district and closed the public out of half of school board meetings. the school board president at the helm for only a year says he is aware of rumors but has no firsthand knowledge of cronyism. he denied an interview. he said they are doing their best to ensure that it doesn't happen on their watch. >> reporter: the challenge is complicated by a huge influx of immigrant children. critics are hoping two newly appointed school board members will bring change. >> there is something wrong in the hempstead culture and the

her apartment for months. someone visiting her found the body and called police. prosecutors wouldn't say how the child died but they say intentional. she has two other children but lived alone in the apartment. she has been charged with second-degree murder. expect tighter security if you are traveling by train in europe. top officials from nine countries held an emergency meeting to discuss security issues after passengers foiled a terrorist attack on a high- speed train traveling from amsterdam to paris a little over a week ago. the countries agreed they will increase id on trains and better coordinated intelligence. we are learning about the innocent bystander shot and killed by nypd officers during an undercover gun operation gone wrong. friends of 61-year-old felix kumi paid respects yesterday in mount vernon. kumi was shot in the chest and arm during a gun buy operation on friday. he was married with three

children and was a school bus driver for first students of mount vernon. >> he is so wonderful. not fair. just not fair. >> he was the best. just the best. he was like my checked father. you couldn't ask for a better man. >> in a statement, police commissioner bill bratton expressed sorrow and sympathy to kumi's family. feel both suspects in the gun buy are under arrest. two fighter jets scramble to divert a plane to denver international airport because of a cat. one passenger tweeted this picture on the plane traveling from las vegas to germany. sources say a female model from europe demanded her cat be brought to her rather than having it stay with the other animals on the plane. she claimed it was her comfort cat and became unruly. the passenger was then escourted off the plane. speaking of flying, vanessa murdock took to the sky for a special ride, right, vanessa. >> it was the ride of a lifetime.

showed was intense but what i grueling. >> you were worried. >> there was a gentleman holding on to the blimp next to me. he is holding on to it at the door and he had to run for his life. i'm not joking when i say that because he is getting pushed and sucked back by the blimp and he had to run as hard as he could away. you can't show -- the video doesn't show it all. hopefully it gives you a good idea how the landing became. >> how do they get it to come down. when a balloon has helium it eventually losing the helium. >> he does, he measures the helium and allows us to adjust but there is steering gear to elevate us down so we pitch down so he is steering that. >> looked like an amazing ride. >> it was so much fun and big props to that crew. they are experts. >> it all went well in the end.

7 people are dead and 200 up injured from a fire at a residential complex used by saudi arabia armco. it started in kobar. the victims are from various nationalities since the country relies on migrant neighbors. lifeguards in san diego will decide whether or not to reopen a mile and a half stretch of beach that was closed due to a shark siting yesterday. further north the beach in mor obey is closed after a shark almost took a bite out of a surfer but chomped on the board instead. >> elinor dempsey saw a shark approach her 2 feet underway.

we are talking a possible heat wave as we make our way monday through thursday. rising humidity levels it is. oh, yes. yesterday comfortable. today we start to feel it. the next couple of days we will feel it. not until the end of the workweek, drier air settles in and we get to the comfortable more fall like feel early in the morning. on the vortex satellite and radar picture, clear skies. to the north and west thicker cloud cover and the suggestion of a few showers. this is the general trend for today. what is happening, there is a warm front situated just about here and it will ease its way closer to us. as that happens, it may trigger showers, possibly a stray thunderstorm but most of us do stay dry today. just going to tampa bay hot out there. we are heating things up across the region. winds out of the southwest persistently pumping in hot and humid air.
