awards. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, august 31st, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president obama begins a historic three-day trip to alaska today where he'll become the first sitting president to set foot in the arctic circle. he'll use the trip as a call to action against climate challenge. all the while he continues to receive criticism from environmentalists. >> i share people's concerns about offshore drilling. i remember the bp spill on the gulf of mexico all too well. that's why we're making sure that it's done at the highest safety standards possible. >> during his visit to alaska,

president obama will officially change the name of mount mckinley. it's the tallest mountain peak in north america. the president will change the name to denali. it's the traditional alaskan native name which means "the high one." the name mount mckinley was a tribute to the 25th u.s. president william mckinley. it's been a long conflict. and this morning the remnants of tropical storm erika are heading north over south central florida. the system is still capable of producing heavy downpours and damaging winds and possible flooding. a flood warping is inning is in effect. don champion has the latest from miami r even though erika has dissipated parts of the southeast, they're not out of the woods yet. the remnants are producing heavy rains and high winds. over the weekend erika's waves

crashed against the coast of palm beach. >> the erosion is unbelievable. >> reporter: erika's rains turned yards into lakes and covered roads in parts of the state. the situation made it tricky for both biker as and cars. >> i could barely peddle. >> reporter: last week tropical storm erika dumped more than 15 inches of rain in parts of the caribbean, killing at least 20 people on the island of dominica. for now emergency operation centers in florida are staying open around the clock ready at the water's rise. don champion, cbs news, miami. another storm in the eastern atlantic strengthened overnight. hurricane fred formed near cape verdi islands. chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has more on erika and three big storms in the pacific. >> reporter: well, erika dissipated over the weekend, but still a lot of tropical moisture

and it being focused along a weak front here and along the coastal areas wchl that a lot of heavy rainfall expected through monday. a widespread 2 to 4 inches possible with all those downpours and storms but some local totals could be over 5 inches of rain ail the way to charleston, north carolina, and that's where we could have a higher risk of flash flooding. three major hurricanes east of the dateline from kilo to ignacio to jimena. meanwhile in the lower 48, the week is about the warmth in the east. well above average temperatures. it looks like summer is going to hold on strong. a lot of 80s and 90s. new york stock exchange, up to 90 monday and tuesday. more of that later this week. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. more residents in central oregon are being told to evacuate as firefighters battle a group of raging wildfires.

the fires cover 150 square miles, more than three dozen homes have been destroyed. yesterday fire crews made some progress as conditions improved. in washington state several thousand people gathered yesterday for a memorial service to honor three firefighters killed battling wildfires. they died on august 19th, fighting a fire and twists. they were overrun by flames after crashing their trucks. and now to politics. donald trump says he'll decide in the next couple of weeks whether to launch a third party bid for president if he loses the republican nomination. a poll of republican iowa caucusgoers show trump is increaseing his league. and democratic front-runner hillary clinton is losing ground. she still leads with 37% of likely democratic caucusgoers, but senator bernie sanders has the support of 33%, and 14% support vice president biden. well, the man changed with

shooting to death a houston sheriff's deputy is scheduled to be arraigned today. shannon miles is charged with capital murder. last night a prayer vigil was held for the murdered lawman. kenneth craig reports. >> reporter: hundreds of people marched from a church to this chevron gas station in houston for a prayer vigil to honor sheriff's deputy darren goforth. the ten-year deputy was gunned down. within 24 hours police arresteded 34-year-old shannon miles. police are still searching for a motive. >> we've heard black lives matter. all lives matter. why don't we drop the criteria and say lives matter. now facing capital murder charge. every day the memorial grows at the spot where goforth was gunned down.

family and friends are trying to make sense of the tragedy. kenneth craig, cbs news. newark, new jersey's liberty airport is fully operational this morning after part of a terminal was evacuated due to a security breach. part of newark's terminal c was evacuated last night when a man made his way into a secure hallway through an exit door. long lines formed. agents chased, captured the intruder. while the on-air murders of virginia reporter and cameraman have renewed new calls for gun control. they were remembered yesterday during a memorial service. as brook silva-braga reports the service was filled with emotion and a call to action. >> i want to play softball with

adam and i want to see alison dance. >> reporter: some 500 people gathered yesterday for a service in roanoke, 24-year-old alison parker and 27-year-old adam ward were remembered for their love of life. >> hey, everyone. i'm journalist alison ward. >> reporter: they were shot by former colleague vester flanagan who later killed himself. jeff marx warns about primary anger leading to death. if we get strategic we have the goal of positivity and positive reaction. >> reporter: for some that positive action is renewed effort toward gun control. demonstrators took to the streets outside a local gun show to protest what they say is easy access to guns.

but investors hope it begins like wall street ended. the dow jones ended up gaining. the nasdaq finished the week 121 points higher. d e spite global economic turmoil, the federal reserve vice chairman remains open to the possibility of raising interest rates in september. stanley fischer says there's good reason to believe inflation will move higher. speaking at an annual conference, fisher said pressure holding inflation down has already begun to fade. before the recent market turmoil, the fed was expected the raise rates after its mid-september meeting. at the box office, "straight out of compton" led ticket sales for a third straight week. it took in another $13.2 million and now has made over $134 million total. the faith-based drama "war room"

boo yankees' alex rodriguez when he fell. it's the third time in eight years that a fan has died from a fall at atlanta turner field. a mother is facing misdemeanor charges of child endangerment after she accidentally left her baby in a shopping cart. sharon peterson said she made a mistake after she left the grocery store. she did not realize her 2-month-old boy was still in the shopping cart. >> i was going to put my cart away but i didn't need to because i parked near the front of the store and i drove away. an off-duty phoenix policeman spotted the baby quickly. the baby is fine. a social media campaign was launched to support the mom who faced backlash. when we return, a bomb shem at the mtv awards. kanye west is one of the many highlights from the music awards.

a california beach was closed this weekend after a large hammerhead shark was showing aggressive behave toward kayaks in la jolla. swimmers were quickly evacuated from the water. >> all of a sudden this lifeguard comes by and they're they were freaking out. calm. >> the beach was reopened sunday warnings. the sharks did not attack that's good news. a 62-year-old woman is recovering after surviving in the california winderness for more than a week without food and very little water.

she was rescued saturday from the sierra national forest. the woman underwent surgery to leg. john blackstone reports. >> reporter: the intense search began when the experienced hiker disappeared after being separated from the group she was with. >> reporter: searches found miss harwood injured but alive. >> reporter: she said harwood had no supplies when she set out on what was to be a day hike. >> they found her in a very remote area of the sierra nevada mountains on a very rocky location. >> reporter: she had broken her left lake. california highway patrol paramedic rusty hodgkiss. >> she crawled down to a creek. it took her two days. she was able to stay alive. >> reporter: teams searched from the air and on the ground.

a search hampered by smoke from one of california's many wildfires. finally early saturday searchers heard harwood blowing a faint whistle for help. she was flown to a hospital 100 miles away. >> she was conscious, she was talking. she was very, very grateful that she was found. >> reporter: lieutenant kathy curtis delivered the news to harwood's family. >> they were beyond excited. >> reporter: her family says what she wanted now is uninterrupted rest. john blackstone, cbs news, san francisco. >> i bet. well, next month, the last lunch menu from the titanic will be sold at auction. the menu was saved by a passenger who was saved in the so-called money boat before the ocean liner sank. the menu is expected to sell for $50,000 to $70,000. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," former vice president dick cheney and his daughter liz join us in the studio with their new book.
