this fire and their deaths may have been intentional. that mother, father and their two young sons, found in their home here behind me on joline avenue, here, in long branch, where this afternoon, police are still investigating and they say they are looking into murder/suicide. >> reporter: the nyely renovated jersey shore home, horror. the family of four dead, killed in what first appeared to be a house fire, but investigators say they quickly realized the fire may have been intentional. >> when the fire department went inside, they located more than one origin of this fire. we can tell you that based upon what we see, that this is not an accidental fire. that we are looking at this as a potential intentional fire that was set. >> reporter: 35-year-old linden bahari, known as shane, his common law wife, 29-year-old amanda morris, and their 2 two sons, 4-year-old brian and 7- year-old brenden bound together

in a second floor bedroom at their home. 636 joline avenue. in long branch. what began as multiple small fires quickly consumed the inside of the house. firefighters opening the door around midnight to a wall of smoke and flames. >> they tried to get upstairs to the second floor. the house was already fully involved. they couldn't make their way past the smoke and fire. they tried their hardest to get up to the second floor. >> they were trying to knock the door down and trying to get in and try to help save some of the people that were in there. so that is what i could see from this point, you know. >> and they just couldn't get past the door. no, at one point, they did finally get through, but they were knocking out windows also, and up on the roof. >> investigators say all four family members had other injuries unrelated to the fire exposure itself. sources telling cbs 2, each person had gunshot wounds. >> we are not ruling out the potential that there was a homicide and then an ultimate suicide at this point. >> reporter: linden bahari

worked at the long branch department of public works for 16 years. his co-workers today describing him as a family man, whose sons were his life. those who knew them stunned this entire family is now gone. >> it is tough. i just know they were a good family. >> reporter: now, this afternoon, we have seen investigators and police going door to door, asking neighbors if they saw anything unusual leading up to the fire here last night. the prosecutors still awaiting the official cause of death. reporting live in afternoon, from long branch new jersey, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> janelle, thank you. and now to breaking news, a foreign policy win for president obama, on the controversial iran nuclear deal. cbs 2 political reporter marcia kramer here with more on this. marcia? >> reporter: the massive lobbying effort mounted by president obama and secretary of state john kerry to secure support for the controversial iran nuclear deal has paid off. the president now has the votes to ensure it goes through.

mess coming here to penn station. let's take a look. >> it stinks. >> a succinct spot-on summation of this morning's commute between jamaica to penn station and woodside to penn. >> i have been here for two hours already. >> jamaica and woodside, the end of the line for so many weary long island commuters this morning. herded into the subway stations below in a chaotic crush. new york city transit cross honored lirr tickets such as they. could even the mta sounded miserable about the power outage in queens that turned off the signals, stopping trains from the island, into the city, delaying commuters for hours. >> obviously, this is not the way you want to run a railroad. >> reporter: head spokesman for the mta, declaring this summer a wakeup call for funding rail travel in america. >> this illustrates why investing in our railroad infrastructure is so vital for new york, for everyone. >> reporter: as bad as jamaica

it is the dew point. and right now, close to 70. so it really feels like 93 or 94. that said, the atmosphere capped off and that means the ozone just sticks around. elevated ozone levels at the surface have an air quality alert now in effect until 11:00 p.m. and yes, you're right, more of the area included now. rockland, wefdz, the city, long island, and more of connecticut. unlike yesterday, more of the area, dealing with that compromised air quality. and scanning the skies real quickly, the rain we need, yes, not here, today. but we may see some of that tomorrow. we will talk more about that. and we have your holiday forecast, coming up in a bit. right now, back to you, mary. >> john, we will see you then. a long island man arrested after allegedly shooting a construction work worker with a pelt gun. timothy brazinski shot a pellet gun because he was being disturbed by construction zone. officers recovered the pellet gun and other firearms from his

home and the victim was treated with a pellet gun wound to the upper back. he faces assault and weapons charges. the woman who escaped from custody in lower manhattan over the weekend is defending her aks. >> i broke out -- her actions. >> i broke out of the hand can ofs when i was out of the hospital after they almost killed me. >> kimberly was arrested on theft charges. police say she escaped from a bathroom at presbyterian hospital after allegedly lying about being pregnant. the investigators say surveillance video captured newman at a newsstand using a credit card she allegedly stole from a woman at a south street sea port bar. she was captured tuesday morning when she showed up at her aunt's house on the upper west side. a baltimore judge has refused to dismiss charges against six police officers, accused in the death of 25-year- old freddie gray who was in their custody. the judge denied a defense motion for the charges to be dropped because of prosecutorial misconduct on part of the state's attorney. gray received a severe spinal

cord injury while in police custody, april 12. he died a week later. a man hunt is under way in northern illinois for three men suspected of gunning down a veteran police lieutenant. 52-year-old joe glennowitz, a 30 year veteran of the fox lake police force died during a foot chase yet. s.w.a.t. teams and police dogs are helping in the search. as the search for the alleged cop killers continue, the department and the community mourn. >> we lost a family member. many residents here new him at gi joe. and remember him as someone deeply committed to fox lake. to the profession. and his fellow officers. >> several school districts in the area have canceled classes today. as a security precaution. there is much more ahead, here on cbs 2 news at noon. countdown to the papal visit. we will take you live to madison square garden, where they are getting ready for the

she stopped issuing licenses to all couples in june, when the supreme court legalized same- sex marriage nationwide, after four couples sued davis in july, a federal judge ordered her to issue the licenses. an appeals court upheld the decision. davis is due in federal court tomorrow, she could face fines and possible jail time if the judge finds her am contempt. with three weeks to go, in thele papal visit to new york, cardinal dolan unveiled a chair made for the pope made for the mass at madison square garden. lou young joins us live from the garden where workers are putting the finishing touches on a portrait of the pope. lou? >> reporter: take a look at that, mary, high above 8th avenue. putting the finishing touches on the pontiff's right hand. and this is directly across from madison square garden, where the pope will say that mass. we are talking about it, on friday, september 25. an event that will immediately follow his motorcade through central park that was added to

there is a new craze in the city, one in two-wheeled transport devices are mixing it up with pedestrians, bikes, and cars, but are they safe or even legal? cbs 2 meg baker shows us will is confusion over the way some are wheeling around the city. >> reporter: they are taking over the streets. but are they a danger to pedestrians at speeds of up to 18 miles per hour. >> i joke around that it is like flying. it feels like a hover craft or something. because you're going so fast and the wind is blowing. it feels great. >> right now i'm standing on a motorized uni-cycle, new technology hitting new york streets about but are they allowed? >> not ad, e-boards, segways, electric books and scooters and we spoke to all sorts of

authorities who are supposed to enforce this rule and they seem confused. >> you don't know? >> a new technology, i don't know. >> are they allowed in the park? >> yes. >> they are allowed? >> yes. >> according to the department of transportation, motorized self balancing devices such as segways and other personal transporters are prohibited in new york city. but it is up to the nypd to enforce. william kenyan created the jetson wheel. an electric personal transport device he sells for $900. he says he can ride it anywhere. >> are there any rules to riding them on the streets and the sidewalks? >> no problem. no problems. >> he says he even sold a few to police officers in the neighborhood. for personal use. >> i sold a couple of them, maybe like three police officers already. >> the personal transport devices cannot be registered with the department of motor vehicles and therefore are illegal. police can give you a summons for riding one but the nypd says it is unsure how the law is being enforced.
