the south shore of long island and tomorrow warmer monday nearing the 90 degree mark all the while humidity levels will be rising more details coming up shortly. to our top story this morning, an investigation is underway in bryant park after a tree branch snapped and came crashing down on visitors. several people were rushed to the hospital after being trapped underneath. alana gold brings us more from bryant park. >> reporter: of course this is labor day weekend a lot of people will be here in bryant park already filling up some say they are nervous because a number of visitors got pinned under the tree, one with a broken arm. these pictures show the chaos friday afternoon, after a tree snapped. >> they are old trees, you know, you never know. you're sitting right underneath one. >> i know i'm hoping nothing

two heavy limbs struck five park visitors. some got pins underneath. >> we come every day play chess over here. the tree fell right where you play chess. >> yeah. >> you worried it will happen again? >> i do believe so. and two had to be rushed to hospital. several had back and neck injuries. as i heard the crash, i turned and the tree literally like went to the side. >> lindsey ran over to help telling victims to stay calm and still as they waited for paramedics, you can see her beside this 23-year-old woman. >> the girl was on the floor, i needed to be there and help her. they say she was the most seriously injured with a broken arm. she did what she could to comfort her. >> parks workers carved up the sections of the tree cleared the debris and removed the trunk now it is a matter of figuring out how this happened. we spoke with a tree expert that says it is possible decay

developed deep if the trunk. >> that may have happened because of a past wound from storm damage, possibly a wound or some kind of wound that allowed decay to get into the tree. sometimes those times are visible on the surface of the tree, sometimes they are not. people in parks across new york city say they are leery when walking around following this unexpected incident. >> it is labor day weekend you get out of work early, you want to relax and come to the park see my friends, an accident like this happens. >> so again the cause of this incident is still under investigation, that tree expert says the trees here in bryant park are well inspected. we're live in bryant park, cbs 2 news. we have new information now on that police-involved shooting in bushwick brooklyn, police arrested and charged 27-

police officer after an extented shoot out the nyfd says 70 shots, they say it started, after another man in the arm. the shoot out ended when one of the officers shot harris in the leg. new this morning police are in a man hunt after an attack in the park, police say he sexually abused a 22-year-old woman, on thursday around 6:30. a pillow fight turned bloody when they swung pillow cases packed with hard objects. 30 cadets were hurt at the u.s. military academy. this video was apparently taken at the event last month we are hearing about the injuries. first year students organized the pillow fight as a way to build comradery.

with the empire state building one world trade in the background mostly sunny and 70. northeast winds at 13 miles per hour, there is also a nice breeze, your headlines blue skies, prevail not just today, not just tomorrow but monday and tuesday as well, it is going to be warm and dry. there is no rain in site, the next best chance of rain looks to be really thursday into friday and we could use it. a look at your temperature trend here, yesterday it was 85 degrees, today will top out at 81 which is much closer to the warm. top out at 78 but we're going to be staying strong in the 80s, we're well above the 50 day straight mark getting closer to the 60 day straight mark we'll get this based upon this forecast. temperatures continue to climb through your holiday weekend as does the humidity. for today, it is comfortable tomorrow i think it is still comfortable out there as for

monday, we'll start to feel it. not that oppressive humidity we saw yesterday i think over all it is looking pretty good. looking very pleasant with mostly sunny skies, area of high pressure dominating this forecast, does so for the entirety of your weekend winds out of the northeast, we'll have a nice breeze lending itself to a super saturday. and migrates off the coast a smidge, winds become more southerly temperatures start to climb as do the humidity levels. 90 for labor day, it will get more sticky but over all i think it's will be a beautiful holiday weekend for today blue skies, less humid and 81 degrees. northeast winds at 10 to 15. if your going to the beach today, looking good on the coast if you stay in the sand. 78 to 81 degrees lots of sun, tomorrow nice, low and mid-80s, monday the warmest one

mid-80s at all of our shorelines ocean temperature 70 to 78 degrees. with the beach forecast there is a high risk of rip currents along the jersey shore. mountain forecast, lovely. tomorrow warmer mid-80s with sun and then on monday for the holiday, it is a hot one in the mountains upper 80s to nearing 90 degrees. if you like 90, you know, on monday. cool 66, lend itself to 50s northwest, still feeling good out there again humidity levels don't start to really rise until monday. so tomorrow 86 degrees with sun for your sunday monday 89 pushing 90 some of us will get there with sunshine and a little bit higher humidity. we start to feel the humidity on tuesday, 90 degrees that day wednesday 89 seeing more clouds thursday, friday our next best chance for rain right now we're about 3 inches below where we should be for the summer

entered my classroom and decided that i needed to address the tragedy head on. that decision grew into the nonprofit operation goody bag a way for children, teen agers, everyone to honor our troops and remember 9/11. jane costco joins us live in studio this morning, and you brought some of your goody bags. yes, we have the supplies. before we talk about the goody bags talk to me about how this started because it has esolved over the years. it was out of my classroom the day after september eleventh and i thought we needed a way to channel the children's grief. i taught in a town close to new york city so there were several people who were killed in the town. and we reached out to first responders and the troops and

the gift of personal item, personal hygiene items, that became expensive and heavy, he was anxious to support the project and said there comes a time where we have to cut expenses. we tried to figure a small personal way where if someone were to receive the gifts they would get an individual gift that they would know where it came from. and that's where the lunch bag came out. tell me a little bit about the lunch bags. you have some examples here. >> yes we have nationwide leading up to 9/11 all year long people color brown lunch bags we started out with brown we moved to white. people started asking where is the white crayon, got a little crazy. they colored bags and also i think we have samples of letters that people also write postcards, and then we spend the rest of the year filling the bags. >> filling the bags. >> this is an example.

this, the gum, smarties. always a tootsie pop. always a personal message that a lot of children have done this. >> yes. >> this one is actually from fort lauderdale florida, i remember when it came in, it is so adorable. how did it grow, last year every state in the nation? yes last year we had 64,000volunteers coloring bags and writing postcards and just started reaching out. these people sacrificed so much time and effort away from their families to keep our family's safe that you feel they need to be thanks and they don't get thanked enough and that our mission. when you give a bag to a sailor, you can't stop doing this. >> you mentioned the ships during fleet week, the navy

seven years they've invited us down to norfolk virginia and transportation? maybe they are going to send me back in a truck? and it turns out we were put on the aircraft carriers to come up to new york for fleet week. so we've taken tremendous four- day trips out at sea with the sailors and marines doing our experiences with them. the troops really appreciate this. cards from them. we have one example if you want to read that one line. this is one of the letters. it was incredible, if you haven't seen a grown man cry, well we did yesterday. people i never thought this would touch were in tears. how does that make you feel? >> it is amazing. those kinds of letters which we have thousands of, consistently bring me back to when you know we were all volunteer, no

salaries, we work hard, and this response, you can't stop. >> you have people of all ages participating this, specifically the children, the school children, so many of 9/11. what do you hope they get out of this nonprofit in doing this work? >> i think the important thick is they take first responders and the military for granted a lot of times until you need them for an ambulance to come or police officer to come over and help you, no one says thanks to them. and it is really important, shake their hand, you know when you see them personally, if you're in an airport and see military, go up and say thanks for your service, we hope that this project, it is so simple. it is easy. it will start a lifetime of service because they get a good feeling from it initially because it is so personal and then we hope that they serve for a lifetime. >> ill stilling that patriottism. we have a few seconds tell me what you guys are doing on

fired in an extended gun battle between police and harris yesterday morning. the gunfire erupted at 3 different locations in bushwick much of it caught on camera. police says four officers were trying to catch harris after he shot another man in the arm. the gun battle ended when one of the officers shot harris in the leg. the staten island football team at the center of a hazing scandal will play again next week. yesterday the department of education lifted a suspension for susan e wagner high school. while continuing to investigate the allegations. during a summer football camp in up state new york players were allegedly hit with a broom shot at with bb guns and have symbols drawn only them. parents indicated it was not fair to punish the whole deme. tom brady is taking to social media to thank his supporters, brady posted a statement on facebook last night, a day after u.s. district judge vacated the quarterback's four game suspension in the new england

device he sells for $900, he says he can ride it anywhere. >> are there rules to riding them on the streets and sidewalk? >> sidewalk, no problem. >> he says he sold a few to police officers in the neighborhood for personal use. >> i sold a couple to maybe like to 30 police officers already. according to nypd the personal transport devices cannot be registered with the department of motor vehicles, there are are illegal. police can give you a summons for riding one but the nypd says it is unsure how the law is being enforced or if violations have been written. meanwhile it is all the rage in the city, legal or not. on the upper west side, meg baker, cbs 2 news. as meg just mentioned some companies sell the devices as self balancing cycles others call it scooters, it is against the law to have a self balancing device in the city

and dry ahead with again no rain in site. we are on a record stretch the previous record of 80 degree days plus was 42. we're up to 57 and expecting it of course to be 58 today and to continue counting well over the 60 day straight mark. hey, that's good news, right? or it is interesting at least, but we could really use some rain and cooler temperatures around here, since june first just over 11 inches, we're nearly 3 inches below the norm, take a look moderate drought for the eastern long island also for much of northeastern new jersey, most under at least abnormally dry conditions, so we need the rain nothing substantial in our near future. on the vortex saturday and radar picture, of course it lends itself to a beautiful holiday forecast, the area over head winds out of the northeast, it starts making its

way towards the east and as that happens winds will become more southerly ushering in muggy air. for the meantime, high pressure in place through monday, sunshine and getting hotter each and every day. as you mentioned getting a little more muggy each day as well. for today, blue skies, very comfortable with low humidity a high of 81 northeast winds at 10 to 15. if you're going to head to the beach today, this is very important to keep in mind there is a high risk of rip currents along the jersey shore moderate risk along the south shore of long island, note wave heights 4 to 6 feet along the shore. comfortable cool 66 in the city, will mean 50s north and west, winds are now southeast over night at 5 to 10. for your day tomorrow, brilliant sunshine but warmer 86, i still think tomorrow with regards to humidity is comfortable, but we start to feel it as you make our way into labor day.
