>> january knell burrell has the latest, >> reporter: the governor spoke the family earlier today and at this point he says it's not looking good. as the governor put it. he embodies the american dream going from a housing project to multiple degrees from harvard. this afternoon all of that is on hold as he remains here on life support. his family is keeping vigil by the hospital bedside. the 43-year-old is in very critical condition after being shot in the head by a stray bullet. >> this brings it home for me in a personal way. >> reporter: the governor spoke about gabay earlier today. his accomplished career is now at a halt. monday morning gabay and his brother and friends were

montgomery streets ahead of the parade in brooklyn. two rival gangs started shooting at each other. they ducked and a bullet still managed to hit him. >> it appears there were two groups of people shooting back and forth. >> reporter: police recovered a pistol similar to this. at least 16 shots were fired. he worked for governor cuomo since 2011, a career he chose so he could give back. >> he grew up in the public housing projects in the bronx. he could have done anything with that education. he chose to be in state service because he wanted to use his skills to help others. he made a fraction of what he could have earned. >> reporter: as police continue their hunt for the suspects, cuomo is calling for legislation that will prevent illegal weapons from getting into the wrong hands. >> yes, we have laws on the

books to protect people but the guns are coming in from other states. >> reporter: police have been poring over surveillance video trying to identify the shooters. they are offering a $12,500 reward for the information leading to an arrest. janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. a pilot is forced to land in the water. we have an interview with the pilot. >> reporter: the pilot managed to avoid a play ground, docks, and houses not far from the ferry to fire island when he came down in the bay. this is the pilot who walked away. >> it's a very good day. i'm alive. >> reporter: a bay port neighbor is credited with the rescue. >> nose straight down. i rannen out of the house and

>> reporter: the pilot was alive. williams had never seen a sea plane take off from this part of the great south bay crash landing right before his eyes. >> it's crazy and you wake up and try to clear your eyes and i'm looking out the window and saying that's a plane. what the hell is going on here? so it was pretty crazy and then i realized there's somebody in trouble. and that's when i just jumped into action. >> reporter: the pilot looked dazed standing on one of two damaged pontoons in bay port. the faa said the pilot called in engine trouble and police immediately responded along with peter williams. the pilot said he was uninjured and described his amateur built aircraft as experimental with retractable wings.

>> i tried to get a line to him and he was trying to tell me how to do it. >> reporter: the pilot tried to remain stoic following the brush with death. emotional sentiments from the pilot. he declined to be transported to the hospital. the experimental plane has been towed away for inspection. jennifer mclogan, cbs 2 news. tens of thousands of bus riders dealing with changes. dozens of gates have been rearranged and there could be a lot of confusion. alana gold explains. >> reporter: new gates at the bus terminal. >> reporter: the message has been loud and clear at the bus terminal warning everyone that 40 gates had been relocated. this impacts 30,000 passengers. >> reporter: how confusing was it? >> i was stressed out.
