and at ps 59 we saw a mix of emotion and all the students were met by a very special visitor who helped greet them as they walked into the classroom. noel has the spelling of her name down. >> i brought pencil cases and pencils to go in. >> reporter: ready for the first day of kindergarten at ps 59. the harbor view school on staten island. >> i'm in the second grade. >> uh-huh. >> and also i'm really happy. >> reporter: why is that? >> because i'm so excited to make new friends and learn more things. >> reporter: even happier were many of the parents. >> it's a party day today. >> a long time coming. >> yes, it has been and i brought cupcakes to the school

and made a present for the teacher. >> reporter: mayor bill de blasio, the first lady, and the school chancellor visited the school as part of the five borough first day of school year. >> i slept very well. why? i think for the first time in many, many times in new york city and i don't remember when -- we have a partnership that makes things work. >> seeing the enthusiasm and the energy of a lot of children and the excitement of the parents, that was something wonderful. >> reporter: some of the students admit they'd prefer to ease into the school year. >> reporter: what are you most excited ability? >> when school is over. [ laughter ] >> reporter: we had to laugh at that one. one interesting fact coming out of the press conference. they tell us for the first time ever all 1600 public schools

here in the city are staffed with a full-time principal. they are visiting a school in all five boroughs and greeting kids. janelle burrell cbs 2 news and classes resume at a bronx high school damaged by a gas explosion. students returned to the john f. kennedy campus this morning. the building is safe and the august 20th explosion damaged science labs on the 6th floor and injured three workers, crews sealed off the labs until all affected repairs are made. in new rachelle, parents were given short notice that the building would not be ready. last month the roof partially collapsed. they were instructed to attend a school a mile away. >> i want to know what the

inside of the school building looks like. this building has been closed for a while. nothing, you can't everyone go inside. >> reporter: school officials say interested parents will have the opportunity to tour the temporary facility early this year. students may be back in class but that does not mean that summer weather is over. we could hit 90 degrees again today. john elliott is in the weather center. >> we're on the way now. in the city right now, 87 degrees. 85 in white plains. 88 in belmar. and eight is the hot spot on the map. the numbers compared to yesterday are two to 7 degrees cooler than you were on your toasty tuesday. but when you factor in the high dew points in the low 70s, it feels like 92 degrees in the city. we've got a few clouds north and west and a stray shower. this front ushers in the chance for needed rain. do we need it?

yeah, parts of the area. many of us are abnormally dry. and in the city for the year, we're over 7 inches below normal. we'll track the storms and have the rest of the 7-day forecast in a bit. the board of health unanimously approved a groundbreaking rule that's forcing chain restaurants to warn diners about salt content. ilana gold explains -- >> reporter: it's the first of its kind in the country. public will see warning symbols at 3000 chain restaurants across new york city. they'll have to put salt shaker icons on the menus. >> would this make you think twice about ordering a certain item? >> absolutely. when i go shopping, i look at the sodium content. >> i think it's a good idea

especially for someone like me who has high blood pressure. >> how do you think the public will respond to it. >> it's going to make people more angry than anything. >> reporter: the new guidelines are an effort to help diners make healthier decisions. some doctors say it increases the risk of heart attack and strokes. >> one meal will supersede the daily limit. studies have found that nine of 10 people exceed that and the average intake is over 3000 milligrams on a daily basis. the new york state restaurant association just released this statement. it is disappointing the department of health has decided to go ahead with sodium

warning labels when more regulations take effect next year. the board of health says they'll have to make the changes by december but a specific date has not been set. federal investigators are trying to determine what set off a dramatic scene in las vegas last night. a british airways flight went up in flames, forcing 100 to slide to safety. >> reporter: it was moments before takeoff when flames and smoke rippled from the boeing triple seven. >> we didn't know if it was going to explode or what. >> reporter: the pilot reported a fire in the left engine. >> we are evacuating. we have the fire. we are evacuating. >> reporter: within minutes, the 157 passengers and 13 crew evacuated the plane using the aircraft's inflatable emergency chutes.

the city. the mayor says it's in the best interests of the city to avoid drawnout litigation. an apology from hillary clinton for the e-mail scandal. the former secretary of state took to social media after her news interview to say sorry for her quote complex story. >> i should have used two accounts, one for personal and one for work related e-mails. that was a mistake. i'm sorry about that. i take responsibility. and i'm trying to be as transparent as i possibly can. >> reporter: clinton acknowledged she could more effectively handled the questions. despite criticism over the way she handled it she declined to apologize in earlier interviewed saying she did what was allowed by the state department. there's much more ahead on cbs 2 news at noon including what you missed on the first late show with stephen colbert.

my concern is the potential for flooding rain tomorrow because of some isolated thunderstorms. and it's day after day after day with no rain. and that real estate is hard and there'll be runoff. 87 and feels warmer with the dew points in the 70s. 82 in monroe. 85 in great neck. 82 in river head. and numbers -- let's see. 97 yesterday and 91 today. three in a row again? that's right. it's the second heat wave in september. we have never done that as long as we've been keeping records. so mostly sunny skies and here comes the front. let's time it out. the day is a little unsettled. could see a stray shower or a thunderstorm this afternoon. after school activities and a lot of kids busy. and now we'll throw the possibility of the storm in the forecast. tomorrow morning driving in for the big show, we could see isolated showers or
