police in arizona to find who has been tar getting drivers in metro phoenix. the latest incident was reported wednesday when this pickup was struck near a gas station. no one was injured. >> it is just a matter of time if this behavior continues that we have tragedy on our roadways. >> arizona department of public safety director frank millstead said they don't know how or if they're all connected. >> i don't know if this is a copycat crime, if it's multiple people that are eninvolved in this type of insanity because somebody will get hurt or somebody will get killed if this continues. >> the suspicious shootings have occurred along the busy i-10 corridor between downtown phoenix and the edge of the west valley, the distance of roughly ten miles. last week a 13-year-old girl was injured by the shattered windshield of a car. another bullet pierced a tour bus and put a hole in the seats. on tuesday a phoenix police
7:05 am
officer's personal car was struck while he drove to work. along the fryway video message boards are asking the public to report suspicious activity. >> why would anybody shoot at anybody at all, especially to shoot at some innocent person. that's just insane. >> reporter: arizona residents say they're living in fear. >> it makes me more cautious to be in that stretch and everybody el, that they could get hurt or shot. very scary. very horrible. i hope they catch the person. >> reporter: investigators are calling this, quote, a real and serious threat to arizona motorists. a $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest or conviction of a shooter or shooters. >> that was jonathan lowe. jonathan, thank you. a new poll this morning shows donald trump has a commanding and widening lead in the gop presidential race. the cnn survey finds him ahead at 32%.
7:06 am
ben carson has doubled at 19%. major garrett has more. major, good morning. >> good morning. donald trump came to the nation's capitol to criticize the nuclear deal with iran. after that he understood took fire for mocking carly fiorina ee looks and carson for what he lookset as a billionaire's lack of religious faith. he said this when watching carly fiorina on television. would anyone vote for that? can you imagine that, the face of our next president? adding, i mean, she's a woman and i'm not supposed to say bad things, but really, folks, come on. we're supposed to vote for that?
7:07 am
>> i'm not going to spend a single second what he means but maybe i'm getting under his skin because i am climbing in the polls. >> ben carson who talks openly about his faith took a swipe at trump and said they differ when it comes to god. >> i realize where my success has come from and i don't in any way deny my faith in god. >> trump addressed carson on twitter. wow, i'm ahead of the field with evangelicals. i'm so proud of this. and virtually every other group, and ben carson just took a swipe at me. meanwhile people are opposing the deal with iran. >> don't want to say things that the other side is going to learn everything about me, do you understand that? that's part of the problem.
7:08 am
everything is talk in this country. >> the new poll showing trump above at 350% shows he gained support from women. now it's just one poll and was taken before trump's comments. but it suggests that trump finished the summer with a flourish. >> major, thanks. more democrats are turning away from hillary clinton according to another new poll this morning. it shows vermont's bernie sanders is virtually tied with clinton. vice president joe biden who's still deciding if he'll run is far behind with 12%. nancy cordes is in washington and she takes a look inside these numbers. good morning. >> good morning. in the last quinnipiac poll in iowa taken in july, she was leading him 52% to 33% and another poll in iowa just this week still gave her an 11-point lead, but now that lead appears
7:09 am
to have been erased. interestingly, if you look at the numbers, they appear to have less to do with clinton and her numbers and more to do with taking sanders seriously. look at this. 76%. sanders is 78%. they're both broadly popular. but 66% of them said the most important to them was the candidate who was closest on the issues, not who was going to wenjian real elections. by the kwa, it shows sanders leading by 7% to 11%. but clinton campaigners say they'll start caring more as we john. >> the e-mail trouble with hillary clinton is still not over, right? >> not at all.
7:10 am
even though bryan pagliano has already said he intends to plead the fifth and she'll have to go before the committee next month, john. >> that's right. thanks, nancy. catastrophic waters are rising in japan after days of heavy rain. people are literally crying for help and stranded on top of the cars and homes. it was strong enough to rip buildings from their foundations. seth doane is tracking the devastation from beijing, seth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the rain has been pounding for two days in a row causing flooding and landslide. some crawled to rooftops as the water rose and as japanese and military helicopters pulled people to safety. entire homes were surround order carried away as jocelyn city was flooded with floodwater.
7:11 am
the river burst its banks sending a torrent of watt err through the city 60 miles worth about an hour north of tokyo. the deluge is the result of a low pressure system that's the tail end of a tropical storm passing through japan. the fear is more rivered could overflow and rain could trigger more landslides. one already buried a home. the japanese prime minister called the heavy rains unprecedent, adding the priority now is saving lives. night has fallen in this part of the world that will, of course, hamper rescue efforts and authorities say it will be days before floodwaters recede. jeff, this is the 18th typhoon this year. >> video shows how close this

7:14 am
but over the past few days aircraft has arrived in northwest syria. cbs senior security director mike morell joins us live. good morning. >> good morning, gayle. >> what is exactly behind this? what does this mean? >> u.s. intelligence is monitoring russian activity in northwest syria and what they're seeing is the arrival of prefabrication housing units for about a thousand people, a portable air traffic control system, a tank landing ship. not a lot of clarity on what's happening here, but the leading theory is the russians are building an air base and the concern is that they might conduct combat air operations out of that air base on behalf of president assad and his fight
7:15 am
against isis, el nusra, and the opposition. that's the concern. >> how do we respond to that? >> the only thing to do is try to stop the flow of these arms. there's three ways for the russians to get this stuff to syria. one is to fly overtureky. turkey has said no. way. the other is bulgaria and greece. the bulgarians have reached out no, more flight. iranians said you can overfly iran but that still means they need to overfly iraq. so i think the diplomatic focus is going to be iraq and the u.s. is going to put tremendous pressure on iraq. we'll see what they do. >> i want to tell you about a story in "the daily beast" about 50 intelligent officials who in some cases say their reports have been altered to make it look like the fight against isis
7:16 am
in al qaeda is going better than they actually are. what's your sense of that? >> they're conducting these in iraq and syria. one of the central tenets -- one of the key aspects of the policy-making process is that analysts get to say what they think without any interference or change it. so this is a very, very serious charge. i think it needs to be fully investigated, and if there is truth that somebody has been meddling with their analysis, i think somebody needs to lose their job over it and there needs to be full transparency into this. it's so important that analysts think. >> mike, crickly. is the fight with isis going is? battlefields. one is at iraq and syria.
7:17 am
i'd say we're at stalemate there. the second is the militant groups around the world who are now claiming their fight to i circumstance we're losing that battle. and the third battle is the ideological battle for the hearts and minds in the united states, western europe, australia, and darngs i think we're losing that fight too. so three different fights. >> thank you, michael morell in washington this morning. this morning members of congress are considering plan to grant more u.s. visas in an effort to help the crisis. secretary of state john kerry tried to sell the argument. the current number is 70,000. that could rise to as many as 100 thousand. if approved it could go into effect next month. this stems from the video ha holly williams showed us yesterday. five armed men in black uniforms
