there was widespread criticism of the organization at wednesday's gop presidential debate. >> we shouldn't be sending 500 million of taxpayer money to fund criminal. >> this is not the character of our nation and if we cannot stand up and force president obama to veto this bill, shame on us. >> reporter: house makers will try to push through a funding. speaking in new hampshire, democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton says shutting down the government would put the economy and country in peril. >> sugar down the country is something nobody else in the world really understands. you would volume tearvoluntary do that to your country? last night, at a town hall meeting in new hampshire,

of desertion and for leaving his post in afghanistan in 2009, charges which carry a possible life sentence. yesterday, bergdahl sat in court and sometimes silent and sometimes taking notes. >> it's a very low evidentiary threshold and certainly for that reason, should not be thought of as a trial. >> reporter: prosecutors called three witnesses to the stand, including bergdahl's former platoon leader captain john billings. billings described how thousands of soldiers risked their lives for 45 days to try to find bergdahl in a region known as ied alley. under cross-examination, billings said he had no histry of bergdahl's history. they plan to call their own witnesses to the stand today, including major general kenneth doll who conducted the army's investigation into his disappearance.

sergeant bergdahl told general doll. >> bergdahl who spent nearly five years in taliban captivity after he deserted has never explained why he left. it's unclear whether the attorneys will put him on the stand today. in a highly controversial swap last may, america exchanged five detainees in guantanamo bay in exchange for bergdahl. the last of the hikers killed by floodwaters in utah has been found. rescuers found the body yesterday. the bodies of the other six hikers were found tuesday and wednesday. the flash flooding also killed at least 12 other people, including nine children. the death toll in the california wildfires is rising. two more bodies were found in the ruins. burnt homes in lake county. that brings the death toll to five in two of the worst fires in the state. cooler weather and rain
