from the studio 57 newsroom in new york, thanks for joining us. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, pope francis is beginning his first full day in the united states. he arrived in washington yesterday. president obama will officially welcome him at the white house this morning. and that is followed by several more events before pope francis heads to new york city and philadelphia. weijia jiang is in washington with the papal plans. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. and good morning to everybody. after a quiet night here in the u.s., pope francis will wake up at the vatican em bassbassey where he is staying in washington. at 9:00 the country will hear for the first time today his message to americans. the crowds greet pope francis at

to those welcoming him to the nation's capital today. francis will begin his first full day on u.s. soil with a grand arrival ceremony on the white house lawn. followed by a private meeting with president obama. >> this is not a meeting between politicians. rather, it's an opportunity for -- to respected world leaders with significant influence around the globe to spend some time talking about the values that they hold in common. >> reporter: thousands will line the street from the national mall just to catch a glimpse of the pope. emily rizly will get to see him up close. the 23-year-old soprano is one of 20 choir members when the pope celebrates mass at the ba basilica shrine this afternoon. >> reporter: we have to be in control and remember everything that i've learned in all of my schooling to try to do my absolute best. >> reporter: conductors chose singers to reflect the diversity

of the catholic church in the united states. a mass held outside for 25,000 people who scored a ticket. and then tomorrow, pope francis will deliver the first-ever papal address to a joint meeting of congress. we expect him to talk about reconciliation with cuba, ways to care for the poor, religious freedom, and climate change. these are issues dear to the pope, but also extremely timely here in the united states. >> indeed. weijia jiang in washington, thank you. security is tighter in new york city ahead of the pope's visit. police head up security kaermeds along central park where 80,000 people will gather friday for the pope's procession. barricades have been installed throughout the city. 6,000 nypd forces will make sure to make sure pope francis is safe during his visit. an hour koverlgcoverage of the pope's visit continues on "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is at the white

you can see a special report at 8:45 a.m. this eastern when the pope arrives at the white house. hillary clinton's e-mails are overshadowing her campaign once again. don champion is in washington with the details. >> reporter: the news comes just as clinton made a major announcement about a key environmental and economic issue. according to bloomberg news, federal investigators recovered personal and work-related e-mails thought to be deleted from clinton's server. it is still unclear whether any of those recovered e-mails contain classified information. now, there also appears to be a discrepancy why and when the state department first asked clinton to turn over her e-mails. a spokesman says the white house contacted clinton last summer when they were seeking her e-mails on benghazi and it was again that the state department recognized it had access to relatively few e-mail records from clinton, but clinton has

e-mails was part of a larger effort to obtain the e-mails of other secretaries. all of this comes as clinton said she would not support the keystone xl pipeline. she is siding with environmentalists who say the project is a threat to the planet's climate. now, senator bernie sanders, who is leading clinton in some recent polls, has long opposed of the pipeline and, this morning, some republicans say that clinton is just now weighing in on the issue because her poll numbers are slipping. >> don champion in washington, thank you, don. donald trump's campaign kept him near his new york city home. he appeared on "the late show" with stephen colbert last night to defend his latest controversial comments. brook silva-braga is in new york with more. >> reporter: it was a no-brainer as far as late night tv show goes. colbert interviewing trump, the gop front-runner, who rarely

>> it's a meatball! >> i know. >> it's hanging out there! right there! come on! >> reporter: trump said he doesn't talk about president obama's birth place any more, but in 2011 he famously called on the president to release proof he was born in the united states and the topic bubbled again last week when a questioner at one of trump's campaign events said president obama is a muslim and not american. trump may not have answered the question on "the late show" but he did talk about it with scott pelley for this week's edition of "60 minutes." >> reporter: we were with you in new hampshire when that man stood up. >> yes. >> reporter: and said we have a problem in this country and it's muslims. you let that pass. and i wonder what that tells us about you. >> well, he said much more than that. that was part of his statement. he then went on to say other things. >> reporter: but the bigotry part. >> look. he said mostly about obama, that whole question is about. i don't have to defend president obama. he is not going to defend me. so whether you agree with the
