country. good afternoon. >> the excitement almost palpable. we are counting counsel the pope's visit to new york. on the right corner of your screen 29 hours from his here. >> here is a live look at the cathedral of saint matthew, the apostle in washington where the pontiff is meeting with 450 american bishops. everywhere he goes he is greeted by thousands. on his way crowds went wild as the pope beckons children from the mass. >> he took his time getting to the white house this morning. he stopped to greet school children outside his residents, leaning over the barriers for an embrace. >> we have team coverage of the papal visit beginning with weijia jiang live in d.c. >> reporter: mary and chris, you can always feel the love for the pope pouring in from all directions. he spoke english for the first

time publicly during this trip when he gave his speech. but nothing was lost in translation. even though it is a language pretty new to him, he was emotional and he was political, weighing in on several important issues to the u.s. >> a joyous crowd welcomed pope francis to the white house this morning during his first official visit to the u.s. spooking in english, the argentinian argentinian said he was hopeful. >> i am happy to be a guest in this country which -- >> the remarks went beyond pleasantries to address america's improving relations with cuba. also to reject unjust discrimination and protect religious liberty.

the first canonization on u.s. soil. weijia jiang, cbs news. barricades are going up as the nypd and federal law enforcement make final preparations before the pope arrives tomorrow. cbs2's andrea grymes from st. patrick's cathedral rich the head of the catholic church will are here for evening prayer tomorrow night. first, the head of the nypd came by saint pat's to make sure that he stays safe as within as everyone participating in pope francis' trip. with just over 24 hours to go before the papal visit, bill bratton stopped by saint pat reeks cathedral this morning standing in front of the altar, making sure security arrangements are in place. today the commissioner touring the venues he will visit in new york city over the next few days. >> looking to see it as it's coming together. it will look tomorrow with the financing up and a lot more of the security in place. >> reporter: you can see the evidence of this massive

here on 5th avenue a homeland security truck sits across from saint pat's and there are barricades ready to go up. there will be a fence from 55th street to 49th street similar to the one already up outside central park. roughly 80,000 people will gather inside the park for the pope's procession on friday. are there any specific or credible threats you are concerned about? >> fortunately, not at this time. that's what we're seeing all along and that continues to be the case. >> reporter: making the security plan even more complicated, the pope will be here at the same time as 170 heads of state for the u.n. general assembly. the nypd has more than 6,000 cops assigned to the pope and u.n., not to mention other resources. >> they have got 1773 police

which was in front of the museum. you have plenty of people laying flowers in front of the statue to pay tribute to the pass of this yankee's hero. what came to define him in the public eye was his goofy yet oddly philosophical yogi-isms. >> ain't over till it's over. >> reporter: he had a way with words. quotes filled with humor, but also a zen-like wisdom. >> they don't make sense, but they do make sense. >> you listen to it and repeat it over and over and put it to a good myth and they make plenty of sense. >> reporter: his phrases brought smiles to fans' faces and his career gist as inspiring. at 5'7" 185 pounds, this dim intive hall of famer played 19 years for the yankees. he won ten world series. >> yogi berra sends one into the right field stands for his fifth world series home run.

but it is just one of a surprising number of items passengers try to get past security. >> reporter: it took just two days to fill this table full of prohibited items passengers try to bring through tsa checkpoints at dulles airport outside washington, d.c. items like stun guns, knives, cleavers, ninja throwing stars, replica guns, and nunchuks. >> it's baffle. it seems like this is a weapon. >> it is baffling. >> reporter: scott johnson is the federal security director at dulles. >> i'll ask a passenger directly to the face, do you have anything prohibitive in the bag? no. we open up the bag, they have a knife. >> reporter: some of the biggest head scratchers end up on tsa's instagram feed. it's an attempt to get the word out about what not to bring. the most serious, of course, firearms. through august, officers stopped nearly 1900 nationwide.

hundreds of volunteers to help habitat for humanity refurbish this formerly foreclosed home in yonkers. it will be called the pope francis house. >> he has a commitment to help the poor, help those of lower income needs. that's our mission. we call it the theology of the hammer. to help rebuild new york so everyone can go to bed at night in a simple decent home. >> reporter: their efforts are fueled by the satisfaction of doing something good for others. >> i find it rewarding and there is always something new to do. and seeing a family moving into a house is rewarding in itself. >> somebody gave me a break along the way. i am trying to give somebody else a break by helping out here. it's one step at a time. each generation helps the next generation. >> reporter: and in this case, that next generation is u.s. army sergeant michael velasquez who will move into this house with his family when it's completed.

any kind of meteorological change because there won't be much. you have got a big ridge of high pressure and that ridge of high pressure is serving to deflect the grey and the wet, keep it away. even though we need the rain, there is none in the forecast today. click away the dry hours into your thursday. arrival of the pope could see a few more clouds. a few clouds thursday night. then friday it's a pretty mix of sun and clouds. we stay dry through set as well. tomorrow when the pope arrives at jfk 77 at five in the afternoon. it's a busy day on friday. cool at the united nations. there. 9/11 memorial 70 at 11:30. 74 harlem. that. and for the mass at madison the low 70s. warmest will be today and tomorrow. numbers retreat for tunnel to towers on sunday.
