63 degrees on this saturday, september 26. i'm chris wragge. >> i'm mary calvi. >> diane macedo and andrea grymes are covering the pope this morning. today's top stories are straight ahead. first, meteorologist vanessa murdock is here with a look at the forecast. beautiful this week. >> it is stunning. today, a few more clouds. but otherwise, another lovely day. live outside, and show you what is happening out there. we have some clouds yes, it is cool, 63 degrees. northeast winds at 6 miles an hour. satellite and radar. new england is clear. as we wake our way to the south and the mid atlantic, more and more cloud cover and the trend high pressure will keep the rain to the south and not the clouds and we are talking about a partly sunny start to your weekend. a high of 74. which is actually a couple of degrees above normal. and so a nice beginning to your weekend coming up. we will talk about the potential for a little bit of rain, moving beyond your saturday. mary and chris, back to you. >> vanessa, thanks. to the top story this morning, after a whirlwind two

days in new york, pope francis is headed to philadelphia later this morning. we have a team of reporters covering the pope's departure and start with alex dennis live outside the pope's residence on the upper east side. alex, good morning. >> reporter: hi, alex. good morning to you. i don't know if you can hear us. we can see the security outside getting ready for the pope's departure from that residence. alex, hello. >> reporter: good morning. well, around 7:30 this morning, the pope was expected to leave his papal residence here on the upper east side, travel to the airport, and head to philadelphia, which means unfortunately for us, his trip will soon come to an end. he was able to touch hundreds of thousands of people which was evident yesterday as he traveled through central park to madison square garden where he held mass. >> people from all over the country gathered as a new york family on the great green space in the heart of the city. waiting hours for a momentary

admired man in the world. >> he is going to bring us all back to our faith. an make us all one. in this universe. >> and then the moment arrives. with smartphone cameras held high, his very presence in central park stirred a wave of emotion. >> it was probably one of the greatest things i have serve in my life. i never felt closer to god in my life. >> in our city of bold personalities and seeks of fortune, the humble man who works to uplift the poor made the way to the garden where the faithful waited for the holy father, focused on one thing. >> i am here for the word. >> the pope moved through the crowd, and moved many to tears. and offering his blessing to all, and his personal touch to a fortunate few. alleluia. alleluia. >> the mass was celebrated with reference and joy and the pontiff delivered the homily in

between the garden and heaven itself. >> reporter: this place, which is both the variety and the common interests of so many different people, we have listened to the words, the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. >> as massenced, cardinal dolan spoke the words that led to rap rapturous applause. >> we pray with francis our pope, in union with francis our pope, and now here you are. >> and now, as people left, it was clear the experience had changed live. >> we talked about seeing the face of christ in the people of the city. that resonated. >> i had the opportunity to see the pope thursday evening, in his fiat traveling up fifth avenue near 63rd street and he looked out the back window and

waved and that makes him so special, he has it seems to share eye contact and a special moment with people he pass and so many people you see over and over, this is a memory they will cherish for a lifetime. and i think people in philadelphia will be looking forward to that as well. toss it back to you guys but i know you had an opportunity to experience that. >> so many people had that up close, hello, and it was into is to see him wave out of the fiat. thank you very much. >> and pope francis leaving new yorkers with many memorable moments and the coverage continues with cbs 2 diane macedo. >> the pope started his day on friday addressing the largest gathering of world leaders ever at the united nations. >> senara, buena dias. >> he greeted everyone and addressed equality, climate

>> we need to work for a world without nuclear weapons. and the nonproliferation treaty in method and spirit. >> he can concluded his speech by blessing everyone in attendance. the crowd responded with a standing ovation. but things were much more quiet for his next stop, as pope francis paused for a moment of prayer at the 9/11 memorial, and placed a white rose at the edge of one of the reflecting pools. he then spoke with relatives of 9/11 victims before hold an inter-faith service where he prayed prayed those families. >> give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope. >> reporter: the day took a different tone at the pope arrived at the our lady queen of angels school in harlem. >> was it like to meet the pope? >> i'm like oh, my gosh, he is here, i i'm so excited. i'm so nervous.

about ordinary catholics. i apologize. once again, the pope will land here around 9:30. security is very high here in center city, philadelphia. and in fact, there is a frozen zone where people are not to be allowed in. there really are no buses, no cars, not a lot of people out here on the streets today. and the pope will have a pretty packed schedule after landing here. he is going to be visiting independence mall among other things today, and taking part in a mass as well. also, this weekend, he is going to be addressing bishes who are gathered here from across the -- bishops who are gathered here from across the world and visiting inmates at a local correctional facility here today. a very packed schedule for the pope here am and it is going to all end here tomorrow afternoon, with his final mass and the benjamin franklin parkway, here, about a million people are expected to attend that final mass. >> don champion, for us, live in philadelphia, thank you. pope francis is leaving new york this morning with several gifts. governor cuomo presented pope francis with a beautiful cross. it was cut from steel that was

salvaged from the world trade center's twin towers. the cross is encased in a wooden box with english and spanish inscriptions. the pope also received an i.d. nyc card from mayor deblasio making him an honorable new yorker, including his picture name and address and birth date and more than 540,000 new yorkers have the card guaranteeing them access to various city services. >> the skies were welcoming the pope. several people snapped pictures of rain does overhead along the procession rate. and the photographer called it a holy rainbow. and pope francis was on a healthy diet. celebrity chef lydia and angela, made him meals, steamed lobster and roasted striped bass. his doctor reportedly is trying to get him to lose 15 pounds. they also cooked for pope benedict years ago. >> he loved the pass ta. he worked so hard. let him enjoy his meals. 6:09.

the brooklyn heights prom nad where you can see the pope's helicopter across the river at the helio-port. a janelle, good morning. >> reporter: we are here on the brooklyn promenade this morning where we are hoping to get a glimpse of the pope as the motorcade passes along the fdr drive across the east river. we have seen a number of police security police boats in the water. and take a look at this. we wanted to show you what it looked like on thursday when the pope was making the reverse trip uptown here in the city. watch this motorcade, the pope in his black fiat as he was making the trip up the fdr drive and today reverse trip down to the helio-port where the pope will board a helicopter, identical to marine one which the president uses when in town. the pope and vatican officials will get on town for a slight

trip to jfk airport where he will take off later this morning. headed for philadelphia. we are expecting or hoping to see when his cars pass by and morning. so we will be here, watching it all unfold for you. reporting live this morning, from brooklyn, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. and new this morning, firefighters were investigating what destroyed a house in wayne new jersey, it happened early this morning on interstate i- 80. and you can see the front of the home is completely burned. no one was hurt in the four alarm fire. now to chaos in washington. house speaker john boehner says he is resigning saying he is fed up with a small group of tea party conservatives who some say have hijacked the republican party. ilana gold is live in the newsroom with morn. >> reporter: john boehner is the highest ranking republican but giving up one of the most powerful job.

partly sunny sort of day, and seasonally cool. no big rain in the extended forecast but we bring in a chance for some showers and best bet will be south of the city. but still we could get a little bit of wet weather tomorrow. but certainly not as much as we need. anticipating a high of 74 degrees. three degrees above normal. and 6:47 is sunrise. and sunsets at 6:47. so 12 hours, from sunrise to sunset. and i think that is pretty lucky. then we look at the vor tem satellite and radar picture. plenty of clouds. today likely a little bit more in the way of sunshine. north of the city. the reason why, is the high pressure nestled over new england and forcing wet weather and an area of low pressure to the south and the good news is for today, the rain stays away, as the pope makes his exit but north. here is the reason why. the high pressure just to the north of us today, and it makes its way more east tomorrow and tomorrow, the clouds prevail with a chance of showers.

and the tunnel to towers win hopefully will stay dry in the a.m. as we make in the way to monday, still a chance of wet weather, and into tuesday as the area of low pressure lifts to the north. partial sunshine. 74 degrees. a nice breeze today with northeast winds 10-15. comfortable and cool this evening. 40s for some well north and west of the city. the forecast, tomorrow, 73 degrees. a mixture of sunshine and clouds. more clouds. maybe a chance of some showers tomorrow, monday and tuesday. lingering chance. warming up and on 77 degrees, partly sunny, and then we are heading into the 60s by friday. back to you, mary and chris. >> okay, vanessa, thank you very much. today, the mets clinch the first playoff berth since 2006. while the yankees division title hopes are fading fast. >> here is otis livingston with your sports update. >> well, it looks like those divisional hopes are dust in the wind for the yankees. no need to do scoreboard

a few more clouds around. and we have seen nonetheless, a lovely way to start things off. let's take a look, shall we? current temperatures. cool in hudson valley. 63 in central park. and 64 looks to be the hot spot. that is in spring lake. on the the vortex satellite and radar picture, north of us, skies are clear. a big area of high pressure there, that is why the rain to the south is kind of making a bowl. the high pressure is just south today. so we stay dry for your saturday. we will see plenty of clouds. 9:00 a.m., 63 degrees. and partly sunny. and by noon, it is 68. and by 3:00, this afternoon, we will warm to 74 degrees. and that's a few degrees above the norm. and still a very comfortable day. with partly sunny skies. and that's the general trend. by 9:00 tonight, 62 degrees. with plenty of clouds around. so cool and comfortable, will be the trend for today. and seasonably cool, though. and coming up, we will talk about what you can expect for

outside of the helio-port. we are on the other side of the river. a number of police bets, a the lo of security ahead of the pope's arrival here this morning. this is the reverse riverboat when he landed on thursday. take a look at the video. a lot of people were standing by, lining the fdr, as the motorcade, the pope in his black fiat made his way up the fdr drive and today, the reverse trip down south to the wall street helio-port where he will board a sikorsky helicopter identical to marine the president and vice president use when they are here in the city. the vatican officials with him will get on board for what should be a short flight to information airport, where of course he will take off for morning. we are hoping to see his motorcade make its way south, on the fdr, around 8:00 this morning, or so. so we will be here, for it. as it all unfolds later today. reporting live from brooklyn

heights, janelle burrell, cbs 2 news. >> a great spot right there. we head to philadelphia where pope francis is said to begin the final leg of his historic u.s. tour. don champion arriving the pope's arrival in philadelphia hi, don. >> yes, good morning, chris. the pope is scheduled to land here in philadelphia around 9:30 this morning and he has yet another packed day of activities, and he is going to head over here to center city philadelphia to the basilica of saints peter and paul and hold mass around 10:30. later this afternoon, he will be heading over to independence mall and giving an address people. it is quite powerful. he will be speaking from the same podium that abraham lincoln spoke from when he address while there. as you can imagine, security is already very high here in philadelphia. lockdown. there is a big frozen zone along the benjamin franklin parkway. people are checked as they go into that area. no cars.

no bikes are allowed in that area. of course, security is high, because that is where the pope is going to be holding his final mass, here in philadelphia. on his final day of his american trip here, about a million people are expected to attend that mass here tomorrow afternoon. it is going to be quite the sight. >> chris? >> don, thank you. tears of joy during mass where the native argentinian, pope francis lifted a chalice during communion crafted by love and care by a friend. adrian paula rose made it by sill veer donated across the u.s. and the silversmith had hopes the holy father would use his gift during math and father rose was in the garden to witness the pope holding up the gift. >> the first thing i did was started crying. when he took the chalice and hold it in the middle, he embraced the american people, and he prayed for them. that was wonderful. >> he has known the pope for several years. pope francis presided over his wedding and baptized his

this week's guest on face the nation. wcbs will be airing the tunnel to towers but you can catch face the nation on wlny our sister station at the regular time and then here again at 1:00 p.m. a special show from mother nature this weekend. for the first time in more than 30 years, there will be a total super moon lunar eclipse on sunday night when the full moon will be in the closest part in the orbit around earth and the earth will be lined up directly with the sun and the moon and the eclimbings starts at 10:00, 11:00, and will last 72 minutes. >> hoping for some clear skies for that as well as for the pope's departure this morning. let's get a check on the forecast with vanessa murdock here, with the latest. i know, not the best of news with regards to the super moon eclipse. but we will talk about that momentarily. first thing i would like to do is check in with your our weather watchers to see what they have going on this morning. it is a nice and cool start to your saturday. so let's see, shall we, what is happening around the region.

shore of long island. says bruce adams. clouds in north port. but overall a nice start to the day. i think it is pretty lovely out there personally right now. 62 degrees as we look to the west of the city. little silver new jersey, tony is dealing with some clouds. and relative humidity at 81%. i would like to take you live outside right now to show you what is happening in the city. looking good. a beautiful shot of the empire state building. you can see the clouds on the thicker side this morning. and serm it is going to -- certainly it is going to stay that way for the general trend of the weekend. 63 degrees. north/northeast winds at 9 miles per hour. and we want to talk about the super moon eclipse. we are all hopeful that we can just go out there and bask in the glow of the super moon, but unfortunately, it is not looking good. the clouds will prevail tomorrow. but the the deal is this. it is going to appear 14% bigger and awfully red as well. some call it the blood moon.

and 11:23. by 12:27, the shadow ends. now in 1982, this is the last time it happened, it doesn't happen again until 2033. so i wish we had better weather for you. unfortunately, low pressure to the south will start to ease up, and bring us even more clouds tomorrow, and a chance for some showers. so it is not looking ideal. however, we will be hopeful for a break in the clouds. just in time for that super moon eclipse. however, i think your best bet is to travel north, and if you have a chance to head up to new england, you will have a much more likelihood of checking out the super moon eclipse. all right, consecutive days with no rain. and the number continues to climb. it is up to 13 excluding today. and we do think we have a slight chance for some wet weather tomorrow. however, it is not looking like a whole lot of rain. we do need the rain right now. it is not going to come any time soon. better bet monday and tuesday. but still not a lot of search ty of soaking steady rain and we could use it.

so now on the vortex satellite and radar picture, clouds are thick, but note the general trend. kind of sliding to the south. that's because we have a big area of high pressure to the north, and that is forcing the clouds, and especially the rain, to stay out of our region. so we have a nice cool breeze off the water and winds out of the northeast 10 to 15 miles an hour today. a stiff breeze. comfortable though, and then tomorrow, high pressure, as it makes its way more to the east. and that low pressure system can lift up more to the north. and less sunshine tomorrow. and a slight chance of showers. for today, comfortable breezes, partly sunny and temperatures will be in the low 70s. and tomorrow, for the tunnel to towers run. clouds prevail. later in the day, there is is a better chance of some showers spreading to the north and best bet though remains south of the city tomorrow for any rain and for monday, a light chance for showers and the trend continues into tuesday as the area of low pressure lingers a little bit closer to us. for today, 74 degrees. and partial sunrise. a touch cooler than it has been. we should top out at 71.

and then overnight, still cloudy and comfortable and cool. with a low of 59 degrees. and for the tunnel to towers win tomorrow morning, 9:30, in red hook brooklyn, 64 degrees. and mainly cloudy start. with east winds at 10 miles per hour. and then as we make our way into the afternoon, there is a chance of some showers. let's take threw and show you what the forecast looks like, beyond today. and for tomorrow, in the afternoon, 73 degrees, and mainly cloudy skies. slight chance of showers. and monday into tuesday, you will note the temperatures are really warming on up. and we do have a better bet for showers on those days. and now for wednesday, it is 77, and partly sunny. and thursday, still lingering cloud cover. we just can't seem to get rid of the clouds this week. and 71, mostly cloudy, but friday, right now, hoping for sunshine to really prevail with a high of 69 degrees. and getting cooler, but we are still thinking this week is pretty unsettled. we need some rain but nothing significant in the extended forecast. >> you seem a little depressed about this eclipse thing. >> i am. >> are you okay?

speaking of the mets, they were taking on the reds. an up and down year for lucas dudda and they are hoping he can get hot down the stretch. duda does it. game done by the 7th but duda deals out more punishment. second homer of the game. mets open up a 9-0 lead. and dropping the hammer all night. noah syndergaard was a spectacular 7-2 2 at home but on the road he was marvelous. the nationals lost. so the mets magic number to clinch the division down to one. 12-5 the final from cincinnati. and the jets will try to remain undefeated this sunday when they host the eagles. they are calling for a white- out by all the fans. meaning wear your white jersey. wear your white t-shirts. todd bowls is asking for this from his team if they want to get that victory. >> offensively we can't turn the ball over. they are very opportunistic. they are very fast.
