>> i'm andrea grymes. the day's top stories are straight ahead. first vanessa murdock has a good assignment. she is getting ready for the tunnels to towers run and walk. good morning, vanessa. >> reporter: good morning, everybody. it's a beautiful one. we are just over the brooklyn battery tunnel. we are here with not too many yet. plenty of getting set up for the morning events. it will be an incredible day for it. we will take you up to the sky. lovely shade of blue. some clouds. there will be plenty of sunshine today as well and seasonally cool with highs in the low 70s and a nice breeze. right now it's crisp to start off this sunday morning. i'm loving it. temperatures are in the 50s and 40s for us. we are down to 44 in sparta. 57 right now in the city. 53 in the hamptons. 49 white plains. skies are looking good. what can you expect this

for the tunnel to towers 5k an update and walk, 64 around 9:30. this afternoon highs in the low 70s. it will be beautiful. very similar to yesterday with a nice breeze out of the northeast and up to 15 miles per hour. we are looking good today. coming up, potential for rain moving forward and cooler temps in the extended forecast. andrea and diane, back to you. >> vanessa, thank you. now to the papal visit. pope francis is wrapping up his three city tour of the u.s. today. >> he turned his focus to families and compassion at an event in the city of brotherly love. don champion is there live with more. >> good morning, diane and andrea. another busy day for the pope. he will address bishops gathered here from across the world then he will end the grand trip to america in grand

reporter: it was a star- studded affair in philadelphia saturday night. mark wahlberg hosted the event that included comedian jim gave take dan and the singing of aretha franklin the biggest star of all was pope francis. francis ditched most of his prepared remarks and spoke passionately about the need for families. >> let us look after families, let us protect the families because it's in the families that our future is at play. >> but the pope did acknowledge he doesn't have a family of his own to have to deal with and he shied away from some of the more sensitive topics. >> i won't speak about mother- in-laws. >> earlier in the day pope francis went to independence hall where the colonials

britain and said the freedom declared in 1776 still attraction people to america this day. up to a million people could attend the outdoor mass that the pope is holding. there is so much excitement, people spend the night on the street trying to get a good spot. back to you. >> don, i believe it. thanks so much. right after flying into philadelphia, pope francis asked his motorcade to stop after he spotted a 10-year old disabled boy in the crowd. francis got out, walked over to the boy that has vp words, put his hand on his -- cerebral palsy, put his hand on his head. the mother said she felt totally blessed and loved. a new jersey community is mourning the loss of a high school football star who died after suffering an injury on the field. warren hills evan murray took a hard hit during the game but witnesses say the 17-year-old

walked off the field on his own and was conscious when put in an ambulance. people left flowers and letters at a growing memorial. governor christie tweeted his condolences for the family of the three sport athlete. the aide to governor cuomo killed after getting shot in the head has been laid to rest. family, friends and colleagues attended the funeral for carey gabay. he was gunned down on the street during festivities leading up to the west indian day parade. governor cuomo gave his eulogy praising gabay, someone raised in public housing. there were many paths a young man could follow, most were a wrong path. but carey life told a different story. a young man with drives and values could make it, make the american dream a reality. >> gabay died of his injuries september 15th more than a week after being shot.

there have been no arrests in the case but that is a sketch of -- person of interest police are looking for. major changes are on the way for the developmentally disabled in new york. the federal government wants to close many places that care for them. the families and supporters of those in need say they will be left with nowhere to go. cbs 2's dick brennan has the exclusive. >> reporter: throughout new york thousands of developmentally disabled students work in sheltered workshops. many live in large residences. but order of the federal government, both the workshops and the residences must close within the next five years. >> they can't go home. they need to be supported. they require around the clock nursing care.

ruling. 62-year-old tom tomicello to tears. >> i want to stay open. i really do want it to stay open. i don't want to sit at home. >> reporter: advocates for the divided. some argue that sheltered workshops take advantage of the disadvantaged because employers can pay them below the minimum wage. >> fighting for a systems that pays pennies an hour further the misconception that individuals with disabilities are unprowable and undeserving of a minimum wage. >> she says her 57-year-old daughter susie feels safe in the sheltered workshops. >> she is not worried about how much money she makes. she goes there because she loves to work. >> reporter: as for the smaller group homes, robert barta feels his uncle bill won't be able to handle being moved from long- time friends.

>> my hope is that the program can be saved. that people will rally and realize -- >> reporter: barta and other parents say they will lobby lawmakers to reconsider the plan. dick brennan, cbs 2 news. >> a new york state spokesperson says agencies will try to find smaller scale housing and suitable jobs. president obama will speak at the united nations summit. leaders are exploring ways to fix the greatest problems like climate change and extreme poverty. yesterday's china's president pledged billions in aid to help some of the poorest nations. the first full day of debate begins tomorrow. expect street closures and delays around the u. mets fans are waking up this morning division champs. the amazing mets clinched the championship last night and are gearing up for the postseason. ilana gold joins us live from citi field. fun assignment, ilana.

>> reporter: sorry, diane, i couldn't hear what you were saying. it's loud in the street. in the next hour or so a lot of fans will be here at citi field. they will get a chance to buy division champs merchandise. they could not be more excited for the mets to be in the play- offs because this hasn't happened in nine years. >> go mets. >> reporter: mets fans are already showing up at models in time's square to be the first to buy play-off gear. >> amazing. >> reporter: these new t-shirts and hats have logos fans have been waiting to see and they champions. >> i watch the game hoping for them to win with my please hat and everything as luck. so, now, i'm really happy. we both came running over here. >> reporter: the team clinched the division last night beating the cincinnati reds on the road.

the mets haven't made it to the play-offs since 2006 but their work is far from over. they have a week and a half left in the season and trying to win home field advantage. >> i am excited about the mets going all the way this year. world series. i can't wait to pick up my tickets on monday. let's go mets. >> reporter: these fans could not be more thrilled. the store opens at 8:00 this morning. the mets play cincinnati again this afternoon. live at citi field, ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> a long time coming for those mets. >> almost a decade. time is 7:10.

us on cbs 2 news sunday morning. we are on on facebook and twitter. join our conversations at facebook.com and tweet us at cbs new york. a developing story out of israel. police say they clashed with young palestinian protestors early this morning at the hilltop compound in jerusalem's old city. the site is known as the temple mount to jews and mobile sanctuary to muslims. masked protestors threw rocks and firecrackers. it occurred just before the jewish holiday. federal examiners are investigating a duck boat in seattle. the ntsb says it's not clear if the axle was damaged before it collided with a charter bus on a bridge. four people died and 50 more people were hurt in the crash. some witnesses say the duck boat's left tire locked up as

gates and bono spoke to the crowd. stephen colbert and hugh jackman helped with hosting duties. a utah couple is very grateful after their baby was born three months premature on a cruise ship and beat the odds. it took the efforts of the crew and the captain to keep the baby alive. hayden morgan decided to crash the family vacation, 1 pound 8 ounces of them. >> nice to go on a cruise. >> reporter: the parents decided to take their 3-year- old daughter chloe on a vacation at sea in august. >> we were going to let her swim with the dolphins and one last experience before she became a big sister. >> reporter: she was set to be the big sister december 19th. emily, six months pregnant and cleared by her doctor. two days later -- >> we went to dinner. that night i started having contractions. letter the doctors came down at

we don't want you to have that baby on the ship. i knew the baby was coming quickly. >> a half hour later hayden was born. the ship's medical staff told emily he didn't make it. >> i started to cry and told my husband we weren't going to have any more kids. i don't want to go through this again. >> it was hard, emotional. but i was trying to focus on emily. >> reporter: 45 minutes later. >> the two doctors and the nurse came in and said he was still alive but they didn't think he would last very long. >> reporter: with no incubator on the ship they swaddled the baby in towels. the captain rushed to the next port of call, puerto rico. after three days in the hospital there, he was airlifted to a children's hospital near coral gables. >> what will you tell hayden some day about his birthday. >> he was made to fight and show other people that even in the worst situations you can

make something good out of it. >> the chances of a baby surviving born that early are between 15 and 30% and that is hospital. miracle at sea. >> thank god they were that close to puerto rico. time to head back outside murdock. she is live in red hook, brooklyn, for the annual tunnel to towers run and walk. good morning, vanessa. morning, everybody. there is a breeze but it's not quite cold enough to talk about. it feels invigorating out here. it's a beautiful morning for the tunnels to tower 5k walk and run. i want to take you live outside. we will start things off with your forecast. at present temperatures in the 50s. we have some 40s out there. it's looking beautiful with a mixture of sunshine and clouds. in the city 57, partly cloudy, northeast winds at 10 miles per hour. it will be a breezy day as yesterday was.

and radar, it looks similar to yesterday. we have clear skies to the north, clouds over us and rain to the south. high pressure is in control. we stay dry. if you happen to be heading to philadelphia for the pope's mass this evening, you want to note there could be a few passing showers but nothing torrential. it will be a pleasant evening for the pope's mass. high pressure is overhead. sun and clouds today with winds off the water out of the northeast up to 15 miles per hour, possibly stronger gusts. as we make our way through the day tomorrow, we have a better chance of showers, a slight chance as high pressure starts to ease away and we get more moisture moving in. but the best bet for wet weather will be on tuesday, late tuesday into wednesday, especially with the cold front moving through we could get much needed rain. this morning 64 degrees. a beautiful start for the tunnels to towers 5k run and walk. looking good. i want to mention tonight is the super moon. it's a super moon lunar eclipse. that happens around 10:00.

but because of the super moon, we do have a coastal flood advisory in effect as well. here is the seven-day forecast. this afternoon 73 degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. tonight 65, some clouds. making our way through the day tomorrow, 78. a slight chance of showers. 80 tuesday with a better bet then temperatures are cooling down to the 60s as we make our way into the end of the week. you know we are out here this morning for an important cause. i would like to introduce you to russ hodge. he is the emcee for today's event but you have been the emcee for 14 years now. you have an incredible view from the grandstand. what is the crowd like. >> it's beautiful. you stand up there and you see acres and acres and miles as far as you can see of people there for love really. it's such an incredible event especially following on the heels of the pope's visit where this is something that shows how people band together and how people love and what is good about the world. a feel good event. you get that energy coming at

you on the stage in waves and wastes. that's why i come back for 14 years, that and -- >> you guys want to keep doing this but you want to preserve what this is all about, this moment and this day. if you would, you are working on a documentary. tell us about that. >> we have a one hour documentary called the love of the brother that will be out this year for the -- this time next year for the 15th anniversary. it tells the heroic story of what the first responders did that day and the response of the family and what everyone has done and turned something so tragic and awful into something that is beautiful and changed the lives of thousands of people. >> today we expect thousands and thousands upon thousands. >> thank you for the weather. >> yes, we are expecting upwards of 20,000, as close to 30,000 is possible. if you want to feel great, come out here. it will change your life. >> it truly is an inspirational event. beautiful weather. can't complain. we hope that you will choose to

from to pan seared, stephanie tantillo shows us how to get the most from vegetables. >> reporter: one of my favorite vegetables and one of the hottest trending is brussels sprouts. when you see them in the store, look at the size. the bigger ones will be more mild but the smaller ones are my favorites. these are the ones packed with that beautiful brussels sprout cabbage flavor and that they are nice and green and compact. you don't want the leaves loose. when you bring them home, store them in the refrigerator. once upon a time you only saw them roasted. you can pan sear them, a little butter and lemon for the acidity and a great meal to have. you can cook them in so many

morning. 43 in partake. bell march is the warm spot at 61. today's forecast this morning at the start 9:30, 64 degrees is what we anticipate in red hook, brooklyn. a mix of sun and clouds and a breeze out of the northeast with 10 miles per hour winds. it could be gusts as high as 15 nice and breezy. this afternoon, a mix of sunshine and clouds. a high of 73. again, a nice breeze. then this evening is a big deal. it's a super moon lunar eclipse. because of the super moon, we do anticipate astronomically high tides today. we want to anticipate the potential for minor flooding during high tide times during and p.m. we are entering that for the morning hours. this evening it will be between 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. something to keep in mind, we may get a glimpse of the super moon with respect the weather looking impressive than yesterday.

a stand for a child that disrupted his show. the king and i actor wrote a post on facebook. the boy appeared to be autistic. in the post he describes how the boy began yelping during a dramatic moment. he blasted audience members' lack of compassion after some yelled at the boy and his mother to leave. he spoke about why he felt the need to speak out saying the theater is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. broadway shows with special performances should be come mended. one of those is happening today at 1:00 p.m. a performance of the lion king. about one million people are expected to come to an outdoor mass by pope francis. >> don champion joins us live from philadelphia. it has been the own planned

what have you seen during his time in philadelphia. >> we can expect that today. a million people will be here for the huge open air mass. a highlight of the pope's weekend here in philadelphia has been that huge star-studded event that he held last night as part of the world meeting of families that featured the likes of mark wahlberg and aretha franklin. the pope gave a passionate speech about the importance of families and the open air mass that he will hold today is expected to draw the largest crowd that he has seen since his time in america. about a million people are expected to attend the mass. this morning the pope has a packed schedule leading up to the mass. he will start the day around 9:00 meeting with bishops gathered here from around the world. he will deliver a message to them. then the pope will take a helicopter over to a nearby correctional facility where he

people there and deliver a word of redemption and forgiveness. then the huge mass takes place later tonight. as you can imagine, people are already coming in to center city, philadelphia. some people, andrea and diane, spent the night on the street trying to get a good glimpse of the pope. >> we believe it. after seeing how enthusiastic people were in new york, no doubt about it. >> tough to top the crowds that came out in new york city and philly. we look forward to seeing more from philly later today. a bad yelp review cost her dearly.

it will be a beautiful day for the stephen siller tunnel to tower walk. first, blake nguyen discovered backwards. the donor was his mom. clay realized he could use money for the foundation. he pledged to make the 40- footer to get donations. he exceeded the goal of raising $10,000. >> amazing. we have had many teachers over the course of our lives but some had a lasting impact. >> who was yours? john montone is on the move to find out. >> miss sconce. >> my 8th grade teacher, mrs. murphy. >> i had a terrific fourth grade teacher.

he is a member of the canine explosives unit with the tsa. this is his dog siller. breeding program. this is very much in line with why we are here today. >> at tsa we have our own canine breeding program. it's based out of san antonio texas out of lack man air force base. after 9/11, the authors of the program decided to name all of the litters that make the program for victims of 9/11. so,ing his name -- . >> this isiler. >> -- is siller. >> a 6-year-old american black lab explosive detection canine. i had him since he was 15 months old. we are partners. great dog. you say he is friendly but work.
