half celebrating his life and paying their respects. a police motorcade escorted the family of yogi berra to the church of the emaculate conception in montclair, new jersey at 10:00 this morning for his funeral and they were greeted by hundreds of his close friends. >> everything you read about him is absolutely true. he was a beautiful man. >>reporter: many celebrities current and former athletes also invited to the private ceremony to honor the yankees great who died at 90 years old, including current yankee derek jeter, the team's own ir, hal steinbrenner and former mayor, rudy giuliani. >> yogi berra personsonnified the american dream. yogi, you were a champion in every single one of those 90 years, and we are grateful. >>reporter: berra's close friend, baseball executive joe torre was first to speak at the service where he shared stories to celebrate his life. >> his showing up in this

sunday mass, same pew, same time, and his character which touched our hearts. >>reporter: timothy cardinal dolan delivered the eulogy for the hall of famer. yogi berra won 10 world series in 19 years and played alongside the likes of joe di magio and micky mantel. he died 60 years to the day of when he made his yankees debut. >> that lie life ain't ever over. >>reporter: a big spotlight of and yogi-isms. they're used by millions across the country, even presidents. a notable one, it ain't over until it's over. those close to berra say they will never forget his way with words. >> i was trying to arrange i don't remember if it was dinner or a golf game with him, and i picked a day. i said i'm available, you want to do it this day and he said i can't. he says i've dwot a go -- i've gotta go do a commercial. oh.

he says amtrak. it was aflac. >> okay. i think amtrak probably sent him a check too. i'm not sure. >>reporter: yogi berra certainly touched a lot of lives in this community. again, today's funeral was private, but on sunday there will be a public memorial service at the yogi berra museum at montclair state university. we're live in montclair, new jersey, allana gold, cbs 2 news. >> allana, thank you. this afternoon the woman whose newborn baby was found in a court yard is being questioned. police believe the baby was tossed from an apartment building window. cbs 2's janelle burrell has more from the university heights section of the bronx. >>reporter: so many questions from neighbors this afternoon trying to make sense of the unthinkable. >> it was something that i will never forget because i never seen nothing like this ever in my life. >>reporter: even as a veteran, it's an image that januaryiqua says will forever haunt her. she was the first to see the body of the tiny newborn girl

before police even got to the scene, the infant allegedly tossed from a seventh floor window of this apartment building mop afternoon to the concrete pavement below, her umbilical cord still attached. >> there was a lot of blood splashing. it looked like she was thrown, she, like, dropped it way down. >>reporter: police now questioning the newborn's mother. torres and her husband watched as paramedics escorted the woman from the apartment on west 183rd street in university heights. >> the look on her face was like the devil was in her. >> she looks zoned out, like -- it's like she wasn't there. >>reporter: neighbors say they only saw the mother periodically, but that the baby's father lived in the building with his mother and a toddler son from another relationship. police question the -- questioned the father and released him. neighbors say he was excited to have another child. >> he's a respectable young man, and he's a valued member of the community. >>reporter: investigators now working to determine who is

driven them to take this innocent life. >> there's plenty of hospitals, there's plenty of people out here that want kids. there could have been anywhere that you could have brung them. you didn't have to drop them out the window. that's killing. that's a sin. >>reporter: witnesses and sources tell us that police were only able to figure out where that baby came from because of surveillance video that captured the fall. that video now part of this investigation. reporting in the university heights section of the bronx, janelle burrel, cbs 2 news. >> investigators say the baby showed signs of trauma. the mother is being treat at an area hospital. there is stepped up security outside the mexican consulate today after vandals targeted the building overnight. new at noon, who would target the consulate and why? cbs 2's meg baker has more on the investigation live from the east side. meg. >>reporter: chris and mary, we're outside the mexican consulate on 39th street between madison and park avenue. and you can see behind me a small group of people who are protesting the mexican president who is in town for

the u.n. general assembly. now, overnight, like you said, two men were caught on camera throwing paint at the consulate and police have now stepped up security. red paint is splattered on the front of the mexican consulate, the sidewalk and scaffolding. >> approximately, oh, 3:30 this morning, there was two males that approached from the opposite side of the street with a cup of red paint, ran up, threw it onto the mission and then ran eastbound. >>reporter: the vandals' actions caught on camera. >> there's security cameras. >> everything was caught on video and the detectives are pulling the video and reviewing it as we speak. >>reporter: ambassador sandra funt es says it happened as security was changing guard and she worries it may have been protesters from yesterday. >> the one that protested from yesterday is the most radical one and is the one that commits acts of violence. i mean, i understand fully that they have the right to freedom of speech, they have a right to protest, but i have a duty to protect both the facilities and

the person of the consulate. >>reporter: the ambassador explains this is not the first time the consulate was a target. in 2007 a man on a bicycle threw phoney bombs at the building. fbi connected this person to other bombings, including the times square military recruiting station. fbi is still offering a reward for information. >> in the last incident they painted with a paint that was very difficult to remove from all of the walls of the consulate. >>reporter: she said that incident had to do with the disappearance of 43 students killed in mexico last year. others we spoke to outside held the same theory. >> he hasn't done anything to help to find those people. as president, he should done more. >>reporter: another idea, this was done over the mexican president and a man killed, brad will, killed in 2006 over demonstrations. now, the ambassador says about 400 people visit this consulate each day. the investigation is still -- i'm sorry, the snept is still under -- incident is still under investigation, but police

have recovered the paint can and are checking for fingerprints. live at the mexican consulate, meg baker, cbs 2 news. president obama and cuban president raul castro met on the sidelines of the u.s. general assembly. on both their minds the u.s. trade embargo. jamie reports from the u.n. >>reporter: president obama and raul castro posed for cameras ahead of their joint meeting in new york. it was their first official summit, although both men have been talking since last december about breaking down trade and travel barriers. their meeting comes just days after each met with pope francis. the vatican played a key role in thawing the relationship between the two countries. in just the past two months each reopened embassies that had been closed for half a century. but the trade embargo still remains. president obama brought it up to the general assembly here when he spoke on monday. >> i'm confident that our congress will inevitably lift an embargo that should not be in place anymore. >>reporter: castro said he not only wants the trade embargo lifted, but he also called for

the return of land currently home to the controversial military base at guantanamo bay. the u.s. says that's not on the table. jamie ukias, cbs new, the united nations. >> the u.n. could vote on a cuban-backed resolution next month that commands the embargo be lifted for the first time in 23 years. the u.s. may not oppose it and instead abstain from voting, putting the administration on the side of world leaders against congress which has refused to lift the embargo. >>reporter: the president of afghanistan plans to retake a key city after taliban fighters won it. u.s. says it carried out an airstrike on the city earlier today. that came as rue hawny parked one year in office. he says the security forces are retaking government forces and special forces are rejoining in the effort. still much more ahead here on cbs 2 news at noon. emergency landing at kennedy airport. what turned around a passenger

>>reporter: planned parenthood president celia richards appeared before congress tuesday to defend federal funding for her organization. >> the federal funding that planned parenthood receives allows our doctors and clinicians at our health centers to provide birth control, cancer screenings and testing and treatment for sexually-transmitted infections. >>reporter: the nonprofit has been under intense scrutiny since anti-abortion activists shot undercover videos of planned parenthood doctors allegedly selling fetal tissue to researchers for profit, a practice that would be illegal. >> everyone knows these videos are as the speaker of the house said barbaric and repulsive. >>reporter: the outrageous accusations leveled against planned parenthood based on heavily-doctored videos are offensive and categorically untrue. >>reporter: the undercover videos sparked outrage and many republican lawmakers say they will vote against current legislation to keep the

planned parenthood receives federal dollars. >> anyone that has watched those videos knows there's a concern and a problem. >>reporter: the congressman kevin mccarthy says the current spending bill does not include a measure to strip funding because it wouldn't pass. a cbs news poll released last week shows a majority of those polled, 55% believe planned parenthood should receive federal funding. craig boswell, cbs 2 news. >> the congressional budget office estimates planned parenthood receives approximately $450 million in federal funds each year. mayor de blasio is headed to washington this week. de blasio will be traveling to the capitol on friday to push his national political agenda. he'll be addressing a conference of business, labor leaders and executives to advocate a liberal economic policy. the conference is sponsored by political action group american family voices. he'll then go to baltimore for a meeting of the united states conference of mayors on saturday. you pay good money to fly, but end up with less leg room, tire seats and no overhead storage. what's worse? cbs 2 has found there is

well, police have captured a monkey who ran amok in the orlando area. officials say gleek twisted two lock latches to get out of his cage, very smart monkey. he was spotted climbing poles, shaking tree signs, pulling off some moulding from a car. neighbors even spotted zeek eating letters out of a mailbox. might have even been a bottle of water. very important mail. the pig-tailed monkey broke free and attacked one. the owner petitioned getting him back after getting his cage up to owner after that officer gave two warnings. >> he's trouble. watch out for him >> they got him back, though. let's get to your forecast, meteorologist john elliot. he's been giving us plenty of warning about this rain that we're going to be dealing with. >> my concern too, mary, it's tonight into tomorrow and then you've got joaquin and possibly more of a tropical influence

friday into saturday. so you know, take advantage of the next few days to prepare for it. tomorrow you definitely need the rain gear. parts of the area, even this afternoon. weather watchers watching the warm numbers, 77, 78, 82, 83, 73 for the jersey shore. very warm, very humid as well. and some very nice pictures. i mean, you've got some pretty blue skies there, bruce has got breaks in the clouds there. more even even sent this in, says, -- maureen sent this in. we've got some sun too, and, boy, temperatures in the low 80s and that's where we're going to stay this afternoon. a little bit more in the way of cloud cover in the city right now. you can see some blue there too. 82, winds are calm, and dewpoints are high. 73 in monticello, 74 in sparta, some of the cooler readings. 82 in the city, eight degrees warmer than it was yesterday, so clearly we're going to be above normal. normal is only 70. dewpoint as soon as it hits 60, it feels humid. the dewpoint in the city is 67. yeah, it is steamy. the dewpoint in greenwich is

70. 70 is the normal air temperature reading for the year. we're going for 83 today. not a record, but definitely well above normal. sun sets at 6:42, a mix of sun and clouds. rain should help with the pollen count. relatively low today. we'll wash it away tomorrow into thursday and friday, some good news there. want to show you radar and satellite. a little bit of rain here still flirting with sullivan and ulster county, but the front really filling in. an area of low pressure before that front, so we're concerned about some heavy rain. watch what happens this afternoon, an isolated shower or thunderstorm, best bet to the west. overnight tonight big coverage of some very heavy rain. watch out for that. early commuters through midday, and then you're going to see a break wednesday afternoon. thursday shapes up a bit, but late thursday into the first part of your friday, that's when we see some more rain coming on board and then it's friday into saturday we have the wind and the rain. computer models through this afternoon, don't bring in a lot of rain, but between 11:30 at

two inches of rain by the time we're done with round one you're looking at three to five inches for some of the bigger totals, and then you've got the weekend, that's friday into saturday where you see not only the rain, but the wind. notice ultimately we're a lot cooler. but just plan on a wet period. >> those fall temperatures making their way in. >> john, thank you. well, that cool weather not in the way and that's when people are getting back to the kitchen. >> stephanie and tony tantillo are here with a one-pan recipe that is perfect for dinner tonight. >> brussel sprouts and pork. >> it's a great combination. it feels like fall. >> it does. >> it feels like a fall dish. with this dish, it's actually a little bit layered, but it's definitely all in one pot. but it's a couple different steps. first what we did was seared off the pork with some shallots in hot oil. then we took it out. you want to let the meat rest. in the same pot to still have that pork flavor, we put in the hafled brussel sprouts and put the pork back in here, just to bring it back up to temperature and we also want warm because we're going to drizzle a little bit of honey on top, like this.

>> oh, wow! >> it's going to give it a nice sweet dimension to it. we're going to plate this with the pork first. make sure it's a little bit heated when you put it on for a couple reasons. one, it will pour easier and it won't be such a shock. >> brussel sprouts -- excuse me. brussel sprouts right now are coming in great. buy them with nice and green and no yellowing whatsoever. store them in the refrigerator put this on top. >> rub these in the honey in the pan for just a quick second before we put a few right there. there you go. >> stephanie, look at that dish >> so it's nice and sweet, it's really cool. >> everything going for it. >> that's a good way to put it.
